Once some officers of the Japanese army had to stay in Zen
Master Gasan's temple, for a number of days.  During that time,
Gasan instructed the temple cook to serve the officers only what
the monks ate everyday.  This made the officers furious.  They
strode into Gasan's room and said: "What do you take us for?
We are soldiers.  We sacrfice our lives for the country.  You should
treat us accordingly!"

Gasan replied:  What do you take us for?  We are soldiers of humanity.
We are trying to save all sentient beings!"
