Appayya Dikshitar
« on: December 14, 2008, 12:08:30 PM »
Appayya Dikshitar is a Siva-advaiti.  He always prayed to Siva, but
he was a non-dualist not differentiating between Siva, Vishnu, Devi
and others.  Once he went to Tirupati and the priests inside the temple
did not give permission to enter, saying that Appayya was a Siva devotee,
despising Vishnu.  He returned that day and in the night, due to his
yogic powers, transformed Tirupati Venkatesa into a Siva statute.
The priests on opening the temple next day, found Siva in the
sanctum sanctorum, came out in fear, searched for Appayya and asked
for his pardon.

Appayya lived between 1520 and 159 A.D.  He was a Guru for the
Thanjavur Raja.

In Chidambaram, he has composed a Sanskrit verse, on seeing Nataraja
and Govinda Raja in the Temple:

O Lakshmikantha, Prostrations to you!
O Paravatikantha, Prostrations to You!
For one, the serpent is the bed and for the other the serpents are
      ornaments.
One killed the demon Mura, the other burnt Tripura!
One vanquished Banasura and the other vanquished Manmatha.
One wears golden yellow dress and the other wears the directions.
One mounts on an eagle, the other on the bull.
One sleeps and the other dances.
There is only one Substance!
I see no difference.

Appayya Dikshitar to test his own Siva devotion, even in times of crisis,
asked his disciples to give him unmatha juice, a preparation that would
make anyone lose his mental balance.  During that state of mental
confabulation, he composed a fifty verse composition called Unmattha
Pancha-sat.  He also composed Siva Karnamrutham.

Arunachala Siva.

We can see all the works of Appaiyya Dikshitar in Saivam.org.

Whenever we travel we chant at least two lines of His Margabhandhu slokam even today.

Hello,

I am a new member.  I am looking for both Rama KarNamrutham and Siva KarNamrutham - both in either Devanagiri or in Tamil.
I am informed that Chowkambha Publishers, Varanasi have published Sri Appaya Dikshitar's works.  My brother got in touch with Jayalakshmi Indological House in Mylapore, Chennai and he has been informed that the book Siva KarNamrutham would be made available in the next five days.  With respect to Rama KarNamrutham, I am told they will check and inform us.

I will keep you informed.
