The Verse 31 of Sivananda Lahari, describes the poison from the
milky ocean, that was taken by Siva.

O the Master of the living beings!  What greater help could have been
done by other gods, than the one that was done by you.  When the
great poison emanated from the milky ocean, you took it on your
palm and placed it in your mouth.  To see that all the living beings inside your stomach, are not hurt, you retained it in your throat and thus got
the name, Neelakanta.  The poison about which the devas were
afraid and were running away, was retained in your throat, neither
swallowed nor spat out, to save the living beings inside your stomach
and outside you!

Tirumantiram says in one of the verses:

When everyone took nectar, you took poison and that is why
you are the greatest of all!
