Zen Stories

This story speaks about the Way and the Goal, which are the same.

A martial arts student went to his teacher, who was also a Zen Master,
and told him earnestly: " I am devoted to studying your martial system.
How long will it take me to master it?"

The Zen Master replied: "Ten Years!"

Impatiently the student continued:  "But I want to master it faster
than that.  I will work very hard and I will practice everyday, ten
or more hours, if I have to. How long will it take, then?"

The Zen Master thought for a moment, and said: "Twenty!"

How is that so? - asked the student.

The Zen Master replied: "When your one eye is on the goal, you have
only one eye with which to find your way!"
