The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Glimpses
« on: January 21, 2010, 06:40:04 PM »
Dear I,

The Glimpse of Self is Grace and Grace leads to (liberation)

Your point:
Quote
Because, in Sushupti, one knows nothing.  Here, one
knows that he is full of bliss, albeit temporarily.

Who is the one who knows nothing? - Is it not the one who is there in Jagrat and Swapna? The one that knows that he is full bliss, is just the Mind. This is grace, there is no complete ManoNasam. Because the is someone owning this experience, he has to be enquired.

Your second point:
Quote
the state of Sushupti, deep sleep, is known only
when a person wakes up.  He says:  I had a good sleep.  Here
the state of bliss is known "real time," there and then.

The person who says in waking state that he had a good sleep, where was this person in deep sleep?

Hence, the person in waking and swapna state is just the Mind - 'I' where was this, during sleep? why did it not have a need to say that it is in bliss during sushupti? who is the one who says that He had good sleep? it is just the Mind in waking sleep.

Does the Self have any need to assert, affirm its state of blissfulness? it is just the glimpse/experience that makes the mind think.

Glimpse of Self though is definitely not to be compared to deep sleep, what I say is that it is Grace, but, still it is not (Turiya) as Bhagawan puts it.

This Glimpse is not (Turiya) is what I am trying to convey. It is Grace

Dear I,

'I' beg to differ, because, the glimpses of Devaraja Mudaliar and Marie Suzanne is still just a glimpse because it is as good as the state of Sushupti, and then they came back to Jagrat.

On several instances, Bhagawan had asked several devotees to not stop with these experiences/glimpses, but to persist in enquiring who is the one who is having these experiences/glimpses.

To whom did it appear
Quote
It is a mind-stopping flash, brilliant like a
thousand Suns, during which the body appeared to melt like ice.

Dear I,

So who am i , is "doing"
a thought !

When thought comes up, you are programming yourself to get this thought and then act upon it!

True?

Who is the 'you' you are addressing to? that 'you' has the answer for this!

Its the same 'I' addressing as 'You'. Who is the 'I' who says: "So who am i , is "doing" a thought !"

Dear I,

When thoughts come up i.e. outwardness of mind, it needs this enquiry, it needs to enquire who it is, Who am 'I'

When thoughts are not there, inwardness, what teaching is there? who is there to to be taught? He Just is. This is 'Just Be'

Though Sushupti is closest example one can relate to when thoughts are there, it is considered as an example for just the 'I'. But then Sushupti by itself should not be considered to analyse the (state) of a Jnani.

Just to illustrate -

When a plant/sapling sprouts from earth, it needs water to grow and watering more is actually growing bigger and bigger and when plant itself is not sprout, what is there? who needs water?

the sapling/plant sprouting from earth is thought, and Not is Just Be.

Dear I,

When the true nature of the one who experiences these lustful feelings is not realized, he will have guilt about his conduct. Who is the one who is experiences all these lustful thoughts? Who am 'I' to whom these lustful feelings are arising to?

Let us leave aside Annamalai Swami, Swami Vivekananda, Sage Vishvamitra. Their experinces are only notes and stories to us.

Let us just focus on Who am 'I', who am facing these lustful, thoughts,

There is no use in inquiring about these lustful feelings untill the one experiencing all these lustful feelings are found.

Find who You - 'I' are, these questions will be taken care....

Dear I,

This is only "Glimpse",

Glimpse remain so long there is one to watch these.

The one that says that

1. It comes and goes
2. It does not come
3. The one waiting for the next to come

is the one to be enquired about. Who is the one who is watching all these? Who is the 'I' and infact, Yes, the one that sees the thoughts "comes" and "goes" is just thoughts itself. moments of blankness is something like the deep Sleep - Sushupti. Coming and going is just the Jagrat and Swapna.

Dear I,

Just keep waiting for the next thought to pass by. Keep watching it, watch it pass by, you will come to a point when you will be consciousness of yourself, when you will be waiting for the next thought to come. Then enquire or see who you are!

You will see that the one seeing these thoughts pass by itself as a thought that comes and goes, one by one.

This is actually beyond words, see for yourselves

Dear I,

The moment, the 'I' responded, it simply just ceased from just being.

Quote
Someone is seated under a tree and just then, his eyes fall on a beautiful girl's body. And lustful thoughts pop up. His whole body chemistry changes!

This person in your illustrated example, is surely in no need for any Self enquiry, or realisation or does he need any aatma Jnana. Let him be.

It is absolutely futile to even explain what "just be" is, because, the moment 'I' goes about this attempt, he ceases from simply just being.

Dear I,

Ramana's teaching to me is actually Non-teaching.

Just Be.

Dear I,

I am just putting focus on...

Who is the one whom the sky is appearing, be it blue or white,

Who is the one who is questioning
Quote
Therefore I should make the sky white!
let me try!

what happens??

Dear I,

How do you say -

Quote
Exactly ... why cease it when its not moving at all ? that movement is mithya. non-existent!
Its like saying  "make the sky white!" or "The blueness has to cease" ! what is not there cannot cease !

is it not moving here? by giving out these thoughts? If it is not moving, how can you say it is non existent?

Who are you? 'I' ?

Dear I,

That fellow who is mithya, who is writing here, talking here, doing all these, has to go. The appearing and vanishing has to go. it is verily the same 'fellow' who is also saying "how does it matter?"

Mind is not to be killed, it has to cease. there is no killing or destroying.

You say -
Quote
" when it is not alive, why and how to kill?"
how come these thoughts are going on when you say it is not alive?

Dear I,

There is nothing against the points mentioned by you. But who is the one that has this knowledge?
