General topics / How to speak truth
« on: October 30, 2011, 05:30:47 PM »
सत्यम् ब्रूयात् प्रियम् ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् |
प्रियम् नानृतं ब्रूयात् एष धर्मः सनातनः ||

Speak truth in such a way that it should be pleasing to others. Never speak truth, which is unpleasant to others. Never speak untruth, which might be pleasant. This is the path of eternal morality, sanatana dharma.

To speak truth is an eternal value irrespective of time and place. But the expression of truth should be accompanied by two conditions.

Firstly, it should be presented in a loving manner and
secondly it should be spoken for the betterment of others.

How you speak is as important as what is said. Priyam means speech that does not hurt others. Hitam is something that is said for the good or betterment of others. One should be careful of speaking truth but not hurting others.

We should be careful in speaking the truth. The purpose should be good and the words used and the manners in which they are spoken are important. So the value of truthfulness is relative to a situation. According to the Indian scriptures while living in the world of relativity truth can be interpreted in many ways.

Dear Ramana, Subramanian Sir,

The following point is interesting:

Quote
“Jesus” is a transliteration, occurring in a number of languages and based on the Latin Iesus, of the Greek Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs), itself a Hellenisation of the Hebrew יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yĕhōšuă‘, Joshua) or Hebrew-Aramaic יֵשׁוּעַ (Yēšûă‘).meaning "Yahweh delivers (or rescues)

Therefore, the name Jesus does not refer to jesus the person, "Jesus" is another name of "Aham" the "Self" that "I" is the deliverance, that "I" is the Kingdom of Heaven.

When Jesus said Father, "Jesus" is the 'Vijnanamaya Kosha" that sees the Self and sees it as the Father, the father is the source.

Bhagavan said "Seeing is Being"

First We see, and that seeing culminates into being, therefore, "Seeing" is "Jesus" and "Being" is "Father" both the "Self"

The "seeing" intellect is "Son" and the "Seen" is itself the source "Father" The Seer and the Seen, both are the same Self.

Dear Subramanian Sir,

Thank you for this information :) am surely going to get a copy at the earliest opportunity! i am very much inspired by the profundity of the works of Jnaneshwar and the Maharashtra saints. I realise now as to why so many tamilians have been learning Marathi and become a part of the Pandari Bhajan groups... am really amazed at the simplicity and yet very deep insights they give us, extremely deep, capable of placing a nuclear bomb of grace within :) Bhagavan's teachings become much clearer because of these and Jnaneshwar's words are much clearer because of Bhagavan's teachings and studying the works of saints are complementing very well for a seeker!

These Marathi saints and their works are hidden treasures...

liberation is certainly not merely a dry, intellectual,
unity-awareness; it is the enjoyment of the bliss, or love, of God. It is a
Knowledge-Love; not a love based on the duality of lover and beloved, but
rather an inner joyfulness that arises with the sense of union with the
Beloved. Should there be, then, no devotion for the sage who is one with
God? ‘Why not?’ asks Jnaneshvar; ‘Does not a fruit tree enjoy its own
blossoming? Does not love arise in the heart even when it is its own
object?’ There are no words for this “natural devotion” at which Jnandev
hints. The lover and Beloved are one, to be sure; yet the enjoyment of love
continues. This is Amritanubhav : the nectar of the experience of our own
divine Self.

Excellent quote ramana :) !  here are some more nice quotes of sai baba -

  • Live together, revere each other, let not the seeds of envy and hate grow and choke the clear stream of Love.
  • There is only one royal road for the spiritual journey...Love Be Silent yourself, that will induce Silence in others.
  • Love all men without distinction, Know that mankind is a single community.
  • - Ego lives by getting and forgetting;
    - Love lives by giving and forgiving;
    - Love is expansion;
    - Self is contraction;
    - Self is lovelessness;
    - Love is selflessness.

Dear Ramana,

That is beautifully conveyed - "Tolerance" has to be our (a Sadhaka) staple diet.

There is one beautiful verse of wisdom in sanskrit -

पिण्डे पिण्डे मतिर्भिन्ना कुण्डे कुण्डे नवं पय: |
जातौ जातौ नवाचारा: नवा वाणी मुखे मुखे ||

Varied is the intellect in different people; varied is the (taste in) water from different sources; varied are the customs for different descents; varied are the speech from different visages.

Each person (pinDah) has different aptitude / opinion (no two brains are alike). water in different ponds differ. different casts / communities have their own ways of life. ( they have their own rules and regulations etc.) each mouth speaks different language. There is a diversity in this world. No two things are same. This to some extent explains our (Sanatana Dharma) tolerance towards different religions / cultures. we accept that all cant be same. By this we alow other to be 'different' and follow their own way.

धर्म यो बाधते धर्मा न स धर्मः कुधर्मकः ।
अविरोधात्तु यो धर्मः स धर्मः सत्यविक्रम ॥

That faith (dharma) which opposes another faith is not a real faith. Its fake. That faith which believes in univeral tolerance is the real faith.

Befriend virtuous men.
Have faith and devotion in God.
Fill your mind with peaceful thoughts.
Stop doing anything that would require applying force (on others).
Follow wise men every day.
Serve them with humility.
Listen to the recitals of Veda from them.
Try to understand the meaning of the word 'Brahman'.

That 2009 movie raavan you are talking about is directed by Mani Ratnam sir.
I think He wants to highlight dravida samskruthi which is very bad.

Dear Prashant ji, just want to point out that Dravida Samskara is not what what Mani Ratnam portrayed or what Periyar or Karunanidhi portray, that is wrong. Dravida Samskara is Vedic Samskara.

Equating Dravida with DMK party or ADMK party and periyar or karunanidhi is wrong. What these people portray is far from the true spirit of Dravida.

Another myth is the Aryan-Dravidian theory. Some westerner interpretted the Aryans as white skinned and Dravidians as black skins, and in the vedic mantras there are many versed that portray fight between the whites and black which really meant the fight between the Asuras and Suras (Devas) actually a fight between the Good and Bad within oneself, but the westerners interpretted this as white and black and created an artificial divide between the Aryans and Dravidians. This did not exist before 200 years.

Dravidian samskara goes back to Agastya, Murugan, Cholas, Pandyas. Not Mani Ratnam, Karunanidhi or Periyar....

True Dravidian Samskara, you can find in the Nayanmar stories, from the very many tamil stories.

Subramanian Sir,

Falsehood spreads like virus. Such people are virus really - They have their own interpretations of Quran, and in the name of Jihad, they do all nonsense. Some countries, they kill person, if they are found doing some silly mistakes, they are killed, by throwing stones and what not!

But, what I felt is, instead of referring to these incidents, if we ourselves, pick some verses from Quran and look for its meaning and essence, then, we will see the true essence of those verses, We should never take some commentary blindly! after all a commentary is mind's work and that commentators personal agenda would be incorporated in that work. That is why, I have been stressing, instead of quoting, who criticized what, and what has been criticized, if we quote "quotable quotes" that is great dharma, great Yajna, great sacrifice especially in this kali yuga!

When we talk about Muslims, instead of talking about Gaddafi, Osama Bin Laden and Mubarak, Zakir Naik, WE CAN TALK ABOUT DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM, Akbar, etc... that would make our muslim brethren feel secured, and would stop the hatred for them in our heart also (which is most important - that is what is happening) instead if we keep talking about the negative evils, that makes them rebel, and hate feelings creeps within ourselves! Because of some, many are hurt, the community is branded. just because some small drop of controversies and evil spreads like virus! When one is hurt what needs is not criticisms but words of "Hitham" Good positivity, Hope, happiness!

Talk only good, for it is really for thyself alone! when we talk bad about others, it creates hatred in us!

We should have that positive dimension... and positive outlook. The world needs that now. This is what i stress upon.. this is more important i felt.

similarly to the Christians and other Hindus as well. Everybody!

The Avatar of Kabir Shirdi Sai Baba throws much light on these aspects! by doing this, we are doing Dharma. Dharmo Rakshati Rakshatah

Suppose a child, who is good in drawing and is really very slow in learning grammar, then how would the child feel, if it be told, you are bad, and to somebody, if we tell he is bad in grammar and keep reminding him about his badness to others, then that child would only develop complex and become an un-confident person.

Instead if we focus on the child's abilities of drawing, and praise the child to others about his drawing skills, then that child would blossom as great flower and would only have positive vibes around him, and he would make others smile and happy.

In the same way, instead of picking up the matters that are in black, from the scriptures of all religions, if we picked up the good quotes that makes ones faith higher and better that that is Dharma. Not picking the ones that are black and in doubt!

Interpretations are many! Isn't it ridiculous that in one of the Ramayana, RAMA IS PORTRAYED AS THE VILLAIN AND RAVANA HAS BEEN PORTRAYED AS THE HERO!

Recently, a movie was made in Hindi "Raavan" which portrayed Rama in bad shade and Ravana as the better person. Such kind of mentality should never be encouraged in the name of knowing what is right and wrong, absolutely not at the cost of goodness!

Lets focus only on the positive. Negative spirituality should never be encouraged, that which questions ones faith, should be abhorred and be rejected as poison.

We should make it a habit to never point out the weakness, where ever, what ever it may be, including scriptures. Always pointing out the GOOD THINGS in everything is the SANATHANA DHARMA way!

The Self is as He is,
Even without becoming a witness to Himself.
Now, it may be protested:
“Why should He who is complete in Himself
Cause Himself to be an object of perception? (216)

“It makes no sense to say
That what already exists is revealed;
Such revelation is pointless. (217)

Der Joey_,

This person's (Zakir Naik) only agenda is to prove all other religions and paths as false and only his alone is the only way! A very dangerous person for the society. He does not have a decorum, decency in his debates and directly talks bluntly, what he alone thinks is right! He does not even have a pinch of respect to his co-participants, who are in discussion. A dangerous intellect! Really not worth being talked about or does he carry any credibility to take his views and opinions as a point of any reference?

Today, there are innumerable number of public speakers who can talk wonderfully but they don't have any substance. One who knows, remains silent, and one who does not, makes a lot of noise. A true christian, Jew, Hindu, muslim, etc... do not entertain such people and institutions run by them which go into the millions $

Issue #2 :-> In this website Dr Zakir Naik a famous international speaker raises many concerns over this sacred book.

http://answering-islam.org/Responses/Naik/biblecontras.htm

According to wikipedia Zakir Naik said:

"If bin Laden is fighting enemies of Islam, I am for him," and that "If he is terrorizing America — the terrorist, biggest terrorist — I am with him. Every Muslim should be a terrorist."

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: The Self of your Self
« on: October 28, 2011, 08:37:13 PM »
Krishna meant in the same spirit as the following verses from Kena Upanishad.
  • Not that which the eye can see, but that whereby the eye can see: know that to be Brahman the eternal, and not what people here adore;
  • Not that which the ear can hear, but that whereby the ear can hear: know that to be Brahman the eternal, and not what people here adore;
  • Not that which speech can illuminate, but that by which speech can be illuminated: know that to be Brahman the eternal, and not what people here adore;
  • Not that which the mind can think, but that whereby the mind can think: know that to be Brahman the eternal, and not what people here adore.
Additionally, this Ekashloki of Shankara illustrates the Self of the Self clearly -

Master : ‘By what light do you see?’
Disciple : ‘The sun by day, the lamp by night.’
M : ‘By what light do you see these lights?’
D : ‘The eye.’
M : ‘By what light do you see the eye?’
D : ‘The mind.’
M : ‘By what light do you know the mind?’
D : ‘My Self.’
M : ‘You then are the Light of Lights.’
D : ‘Yes, That I am.’

  • One of Lord Shiva's name is Manonmani, which means Mind of the mind.
