Sri Sanjay,

you triggered my own memories of my inner girivalam. Thank you! I had posted a brief account of it, in the past, given below:

The Sun sees everything;
But can he witness the beauty
Of his own rising and setting?

The Self is self-illuminating;
Therefore, there is no other cause
For His seeing Himself
Than Himself.

General Discussion / prANAyAmA - Procedure
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:57:35 AM »
3. prANAyAmA

Om bhUh . Om bhuvah . Om suvah . Om mahah . Om janah . Om tapah . Ogm satyam ..

Om tat savitur varENyam
bhargO dEvasya dhImahi .
dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt ..

OmApO jyOti rasO amRutam brahma bhUrbhuvassuvarOm

(Right hand)

Fold the index finger and middle fingers. By closing the right nostril with the thumb, (pUrakA) inhale through the left nostril to the complete satisfaction of your lungs and close the left nostril with your ring finger and hold (kumbhakA) the breath, then, keep the right nostril closed with the thumb and exhale through the Right nostril by releasing the Thumb, keeping the left nostril closed with the Ring finger.

Standard ratio specified by AcAryA of sringEri for all is 1:2:2 however for advanced persons, the ratio will be higher, consult a yOgA teacher before any drastic change. Do not try hard, if you are not able to carry on with the ratio, effort has to be conducive to your body.

Various people and various books have mentioned different ways of employing the prANAyAmA while chanting the mantrA, however, the method i follow is as follows, having confirmed by a very learned scholar.

Inhale (pUrakA), completely to the satisfaction of your lungs. Should be equivalent to the proportional ratio (1:2:2) proportionally 1.

Hold your breath (kumbhakA) as you chant from Om bhUh . Om bhuvah ..... untill dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt .. proportionally 2 (you may chant this twice, work your own way out)

Exhale (rEcakA) completely equivalent to the proportional ratio 2

(Chanting has to be completely mental, or else, you would not be able to perform prANAyAmA)

When you recite the OmApO jyOti rasO amRutam brahma bhUrbhuvassuvarOm, (can be chanted by mouth, as prANAyAmA, is concluded)
circumambulate your head with your fingers.

Note: Do not be too conscious of the ratio. Ratio is given only for guidance as to how to exercise prANAyAmA.

Without singing (worshipping) the glory of Lord Hari one cannot achieve any peace!
It is not possible to realise bliss without worshipping Lord Hari!
Without love and devotion you cannot get spiritually evolved!
without serving the Guru, you cannot get liberated!
without japA, dhyAna, there cannot be any union!
without the vision of the Lord, you cannot get knowledge(awareness)!
Deeds without compassion and rightiousness cannot be any good work!
Except for God nobody belongs to us!
The Supreme Lord is none other than the name of the Lord!

Humour / Re: yoga of eating
« on: October 18, 2012, 08:03:33 PM »
A man was telling Bhagavan that he learnt one type of yoga under one master, some other type under a different master and so on.  The dinner bell started ringing."Now learn the yoga of eating under this master", said Bhagavan and took the man to have his dinner.(from Boundless Ocean of Grace).

It was truly a light moment :) How true! simple things, boundless joy!

Subramanian Sir,

Apt verse, you have quoted Sir, what joy!

Truly, seeing Thy golden feet this day, I've gained release.
O Truth! as the OngAram dwelling in my soul,
That I may 'scape. O spotless one ! O Master of the bull !
Lord of the VEdas! Rising, sinking, spreading, subtile One ! (35)

Thank you Sir, kindly keep posting select verses, it is truly a joy.

Tripura Rahasya and other ancient works / Gems from vEdAs and upanishads
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:43:30 PM »
Friends, it occurred to me, that we open a thread exclusively to present the voice of the vEdAs and upanishads as they are the original source of all wisdom. Also, we will get an opportunity to have a small peak into the the ocean of vEdAs. Let us begin with this shAnti mantrA (prayer) that appears in the bruhadAranyaka upanishad.

Om bhadram karNEbhih shruNuyAma dEvAh

svastina indrO vRudDhashravAh
svasti nah pUShA viShvavEdAh
svasti nasthArkShyO arishtanEmih
svasti nO bRuhaspatirdadhAtu

May we hear and what is auspicious (dEvA, Gods)
May we see what is auspicious
May we be blessed with healthy body
May we praise the Gods all our life

May indrA bless us with great swiftness
May pUshan bless us with the wisdom of vEdas
May tArkShya (garudA) protect us from all harms
May bRuhaspati bless us with the best

Om Let there be Peace, Let there be Peace, Let there be Peace

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Doing the allotted work
« on: October 18, 2012, 05:22:36 PM »
Doing the allotted work in time is itself meditation

Bhagavan used to go into the kitchen by 4 a.m. and start cutting vegetables; one or two of us would also join and help. Sometime the amount of vegetables used to startle us. Bhagavan managed to cut much more and more quickly than the rest of us.

At such times we would look up at the clock in our impatience to finish the job and try to have another nap. Bhagavan would sense our impatience and say, "Why do you look at the clock?" We tried to bluff Bhagavan saying, "If only we could complete the work before 5, we could meditate for an hour." Bhagavan would mildly retort, "The allotted work has to be completed in time. Other thoughts are obstacles, not the amount of work. Doing the allotted work in time is itself meditation. Go ahead and do the job with full attention." Bhagavan thus taught us the important of right, honest work.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Discussion thread
« on: October 18, 2012, 04:16:55 PM »
Sri Tushnim,

It was an incident when a dog full of disease was trying to enter Asramam for 3 days, in order to have a darshan of Bhagavan, but, the Asramites, seeing the dog full of diseases felt it dangerous to allow such a dog with disease to enter as it may spread diseases in the Asramam, hence they continuously tried to drive the dog away.

Bhagavan had been silently watching this, on the third day, He slowly walked out of the hall without disturbing anyone. The person attending him thought he was going to the bathroom and followed him at a distance. After a couple of minutes, when Bhagavan did not return, he went looking for him and heard Bhagavan’s voice saying “Thrupthiyachaa?” (Are you satisfied?) “Podhumaa ?” (Is it enough ?).

The attendant found Bhagavan squatting next to the diseased dog. The dog was licking Bhagavan all over his body including his face while Bhagavan was talking to the dog with these words. for which Bhagavan asked the dog - Is it enough ? Are you satisfied?

Next day morning, the Ashramites found the dog lying dead near the entrance. The dog was holding on to its life to have Bhagavan's Darshan.

One can behold Her incomparable beauty through feeling and love.

Sri Ravi, This is one of the easiest way to get to see the Supreme God or the Self. It is only the wrong notion or idea that experience of Self is superior to this, is the real stepping stone!
