"Even as a student he was very religious. Every Saturday and Sunday he would go to Tiruparankunram and go round the Subramania Swami Temple with fervent religious ecstasy. He used to take me several times with him and make me go around the temple saying, 'God's creation is alike and there is no difference in creation. God is the same, the apparent differences is Gods are created by man'. In the company of Venkataraman I never felt any difference between a mosque and the Subramania Swami temple. This instruction of his really implanted in me a better understanding of the secret approach to religion and thenceforth I never felt any difference between Hindu God and any other God."

4. sankalpA

sankalpa kriyA  means total commitment to do something (good). It is a mental resolve whereby you decide to do something in the name of  God. It is a making of a noble decision for meditation and in this case, is a firm resolve to commence the sandhyA kriyA. It means a deliberate effort is made (purushArtA) to maintain absolute self-control (minimally at least during the performance of sandhyA kriya) with one pointed concentration and focus, not allowing alien thoughts to take over us.

Since the nature of 5 senses are by default headed outwards, whereas the paramAtmA is within, a firm resolve is made herewith to bring or make the the outgoing senses head inwards, to look within, itself and engage in a worship of that effulgence that is within shining like the thousand Suns put together.

It is a resolve to not allow oneself to be disturbed at any cost. Just when we begin to perform this kriyA, somebody or the other will begin to talk to us, we will be obliged to respond back, this resolve is to abide within, and recognise that the response can wait till the conclusion of this kriyA. There will be some TV sound, coming and disturbing, this resolve is to bring within with effort the outgoing ears that aspire to gather what is heard, and so on. This is a resolve to remain in niShTA, not allowing oneself to be disturbed at any cost!

shrI paramEshvara prItyartham - For the love of srI paramEshwarA
mamOpAtta samasta durita kShayadvArA - For the cleansing of (destruction of) all the inappropriate actions (known and unknown) done by myself.

From Ramana school of though, one may consider the outgoing mind as the "inappropriate actions" or the "sin". Because, it is only because of outgoing mind, one commits any inappropriate actions either knowingly or unknowingly. Therefore, it is also a resolve to go within, deep within, to commence the sandhyA kriyA, which has been discussed before, please follow the link for a refresher:

sandhyA kriyA is verily Atma vicArA. Infact, it is all in the mind, one can make Atma vIcArA out of anything, only the recognition of the "sameness" is required.

prAtah sandhyAmupAsiShyE (morning) - I worship the morning sandhyA
mAdhyAhnikam kariShyE (noon) - I perform the noon ahnikam (ordained duty)
sAyam sandhyAmupAsiShyE (evening) - I worship the evening sandhyA

Sri Ravi,

I cannot forget how fortunate I was to encounter a man in his seventies,a Brilliant Mechanical Engineer,in a wedding. We were seated next to each other and our conversation veered to this wonderful verse of mahAkavi;as he recited these deeply devotional and intimate composition of Bharatiyar,he shed tears in ecstasy; The marriage hall and all the din and noise all were completely transcended and these immortal lines of the mahAkavi, incredibly beautiful filled one's being. He savoured all the punch lines that I have marked in Italics, and dwelt on its utter sweetness and pregnant meaning.Truly ,one marvel of a poem.
I request nagaraj/subramanian to help translate this into English.

Thank you for sharing this, something sure happens to me upon either listening or reading any poems of bhAratiyAr.

I'll try to find some way for a translation :) i am eager too!

Infact it would be wrong to say, that the acharya says this and the priest who is karma kandin saying this. Poor souls, they truly have nothing to do with these!

These are said by the shAstrAs laid down since time immemorial. Infact, AchrayAs say they themselves do not have any right is changing the shAstrAs. The Dharma remains the same all through. Nobody can change just because of change of time and lifestyle.

We all are capable of sparing 20 minutes in the morning and evenings. It is question of shradDHa and faith and willingness. It is because of notion, as to what will I gain from these karmas, that is hindrance!

The main point to note is that these karmas are devised in such a way, so as to take the person beyond any gains, you just do it, coz it is ordained! You do not do it for any personal gains!

All the 18 chapters of gItA's essence is found in sandhyA vandanam.

Infact there is one instance, when seeing Bhagavan say to Muruganar that he no longer need perform any karmas, another devotees stops doing his nithya karmas, and then Bhagavan admonishes him and asks him to resume his nithya karmas.

Very good summary Sri Atmavichar,

The least that is expected is precisely as said by you, thank you! :

Most of Acharyas today are happy if people do Sandhya Vandanam twice daily with Gayathri Japa ( thrice better but not possible for most who have to go to work ) . Plus they are happy if people do their monthly Ammavasya rituals , annual Sraddham to their parents, support Vedic Scholars , support one's Kula Deivam Temple wherever possible  . This is the minimum Karma Kanda expected by all Acharyas .

Attachment Decreases with Meditation

Many times I complained to Bhagavan that I was not making any appreciable
progress, bemoaning the persistence of desires. Bhagavan replied making light
of my trouble:

"It will all go, all in time. You need not worry. The more dhyana (meditation)
one performs the more will these desires fall away."

The One remains, the many change and pass;

   Heaven's light forever shines, Earth's shadows fly;

Life, like a dome of many-coloured glass,

Stains the white radiance of Eternity,

Until Death tramples it to fragments. - Die,

If thou wouldst be with that which thou dost seek!

   Follow where all is fled!

The Zen Master is visiting New York City from Tibet.
He goes up to a hot dog vendor and says, “Make me
one with everything.” The hot dog vendor fixes a
hot dog and hands it to the Zen Master,
who pays with a $20 bill.

The vendor puts the bill in the cash box and closes it.
“Where’s my change?” asks the Zen Master.

The vendor responds,

“Change must come from within.”

Its a good practice to develop the habit of washing ones limbs and face before we enter our home, whenever we go out of the house! Water releases the various effects of energies that may have got attracted while we were on the move, therefore washing the face and limbs with water is a very good practice, that help in avoiding in appropriate vAsanAs that may be striving to take birth because.

Simple habits, very effective!

Sri Jewel,

Its really wonderful you were able to appreciate and grasp the subtle message, yes, i felt, just the video would be enough to convey that which is intended, the music and dialogues are secondary.

:) love and prayers,

really appreciate the earnestness and devotion of all, however, it does not take a penny, one can request an elder to initiate the sAdhanA. It has been the practice, and its also our duty to carry forward the tradition. Taking initiation is no big ritual, one has to begin anything with gurumukham, in face of a guru, after having prostrated to such an elder.

I want to make it clear, i have not expressed any individual view and opinions. I am merely a post master, delivering the same (the existing practices), what i have received from various respected elders and sources.

Having said these, each person has an equation with ones personal God, one may listen to ones heart and proceed.
