Sri Ravi, yes, Guru's grace and intervention is inevitable! How closely did Bhagavan groom Sri Annamalai Swami, so subtly he admonishes the aham BhAvam in devotees, in the life of Muruganar we can see so many instances where Bhagavan so subtly grooms him. And the Devotee should be fit and sharp enough to even absorb such a subtle teaching and pointer. Hence always the deserving attain their goal. Hence we have to make ourselves deserving.

Uddharet Atmana Atmanam Natmanam Avasadayet
Atmaiva Hyatmano Bandhuratmaiva Ripuratmanah.

"Let a man raise himself by himself, let him not lower himself; for he alone is the friend of himself, he alone is the enemy of himself."

God Helps those who helps themselves.

sUkShma ahankAra that is so very subtle, can only thus get crushed, when the spirit of the disciple is thus:

tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā

Striving to learn the truth by approaching the master. Inquire from him submissively and by rendering service unto him.

Real - meaning changes from the plane, which we see. From ordinary plane of existence, Lord Rama was real means, he existed in flesh and blood like us and also died like everybody. In more deeper, Bhakti and Jnana plane Rama is Real means, He is ever existent God, who is invoked and worshiped and his glory is praised as He is Real. In even deeper plane of Jnana, intense Bhakti, Rama is Real means Rama is the Satyam, He is the Self, and all the quotes that we over use here ;) about Atma Brahman and so on.

my thoughts!

Sri Ravi,

incidently, even Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's method was perhaps the same as Sri Annamalai Swami. He just obediently followed his Guru Sri Nithyananda's advice to be with "I am" and as he has said in 2 years or 3 years  ??  it had become sahaja nishta for him.

Ultimately, everybody has to reach the same, jnana is all fine, ultimately, what matters is whether one has transcended the Vasanas. That is the end matter.

Jnana without winning over Vasanas is like a flower bud, but Jnana with winnig over Vasanas is a blossomed flower.

That is the main point, which we why we can see so many speakers on the subject of Atma, but have they all blossomed fully? only oneself can say! One has to be brutally honest with oneself.

slightly changed the below quote:

"we may fool all the people some of the time; we can even fool some of the people all the time; we may even fool all of the people all the time, but we can never fool our own selves all the time"

It is very subtle that we can get confused with Truth and Fact. There is a subtle difference between the two, only if we are brutally true to ourselves we may be able to make the next step.

Sri Tushnim,

The pure mind attains jnana, which is what is meant by salvation. So, eventually jnana must be reached, i.e., the ego must be traced to its source. But to those to whom this does not appeal, we have to say sat karmas lead to chitta suddhi, and chitta suddhi will lead to right knowledge or jnana, and that in its turn gives salvation.

(Day by Day)

It depends on the maturity of the disciple. Gunpowder catches fire in an instant, while it takes time to ignite coal.

pass away from them.

Here is the horoscope of Sri Rama as given in Valmiki Ramayana:

On completion of the ritual six seasons have passed by and then in the twelfth month, on the ninth day of chaitra month [April-May,] when the presiding deity of ruling star of the day is Aditi, where the ruling star of day is punarvasu, the asterism is in the ascendant, and when five of the nine planets viz., Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus are at their highest position, when Jupiter with Moon is ascendant in Cancer, and when day is advancing, then Queen Kausalya gave birth to a son with all the divine attributes like lotus-red eyes, lengthy arms, roseate lips, voice like drumbeat, and who took birth to delight the Ikshwaku dynasty, who is adored by all the worlds, and who is the greatly blessed epitome of Vishnu, namely Rama. [1-18-8, 9, 10, 11]

I agree. After all questioning, there comes a stage, where Who am I? becomes an answerless question.  Then 'idam' disappears
and 'tat' appears which is unanalyzable.

Even the one that remains to see the answer-less question merges, there is neither question nor answer, just Self Presence, swa-prakAsha - Self Illuminating, which is both the drik and drishya - seer and seen.

As Bhagavan as said, "I saw the seer disappearing and That alone which stands for ever. No thought arose to say "I saw". How then could the thought arise to say "I did not see?" Who has the power to explain all this in words, when even You (as Dakshinamurti) conveyed this of yore in silence only?"

nAnudiyAdulla nilai, nAm aduvAyulla nilai - 'That’ we are, when ‘I’ has not arisen.

As jnyAnEshwar says, the question and answer, that is knowledge and ignorance die together -

Both the husband
And the wife lose their lives
When each cuts off the other’s head.

knowledge too does not remain, like the campher analogy, burns itself out and leaves absolutely no trace of anything.

Unless one scrutinizes the source (the real Self) from which ‘I’ rises,
how to attain the destruction of the (individual) self
(the state of egolessness), in which ‘I’ does not rise? (And)
unless one attains (that non-rising of ‘I’), say, how to abide
in one’s own (real) state (the natural state of Self), in which
one is That?

Without searching whence the ‘I’ arises,
how to attain the self-extinction where
no ‘I’ arises? Without attaining self-extinction,
how to stay in one’s true state where the Self is ‘That’?

Having destroyed (in me) the intelligence to know the way of making a living in the world, You have made (me) worthless. If You keep (me) thus (in this condition), it will not be happiness for anyone (for me, for You or for the world) but only misery. Death indeed is better than this (kind of) life. O supreme who have taken the form of Aruna Hill, which shines on earth as the medicine for the madness (of desire for the world) ! Graciously bestow upon me who, (in spite of) being possessed by the madness (of love for You), am deprived of the fruit (of Jnana), the rare medicine (of your grace) which will unite (me) with your Feet (that is, which will make me one with your supreme state of Self).

Destroying in me all thought of making a living in the world, you have turned me into a worthless wastrel. If you leave me in this stage, I can only be miserable and unhappy. Death would be better than this kind of life. Supreme Being embodied in Aruna Hill and shining in the world as the cure for madness, grant me, mad and worthless, the sovereign medicine of clinging to your Feet.

Your (real) nature is, You have made (me remain) like a

expressed in words, being beyond the range of the mind,
speech and body).

when people ask me "What is your nature?"
you make me stand with head hung down,
a speechless statue!
