From old Ikshváku's line he came,
Known to the world by Ráma's name:
With soul subdued, a chief of might,
In Scripture versed, in glory bright,
His steps in virtue's paths are bent,
Obedient, pure, and eloquent.
In each emprise he wins success,
And dying foes his power confess.
Tall and broad-shouldered, strong of limb,
Fortune has set her mark on him.
Graced with a conch-shell's triple line,
His throat displays the auspicious sign.
High destiny is clear impressed
On massive jaw and ample chest,
His mighty shafts he truly aims,
And foemen in the battle tames.
Deep in the muscle, scarcely shown,
Embedded lies his collar-bone.
His lordly steps are firm and free,
His strong arms reach below his knee;
All fairest graces join to deck
His head, his brow, his stately neck,
And limbs in fair proportion set:
The manliest form e'er fashioned yet.
Graced with each high imperial mark,
His skin is soft and lustrous dark.
Large are his eyes that sweetly shine
With majesty almost divine.
His plighted word he ne'er forgets;
On erring sense a watch he sets.
By nature wise, his teacher's skill
Has trained him to subdue his will.
Good, resolute and pure, and strong,
He guards mankind from scathe and wrong,
And lends his aid, and ne'er in vain,
The cause of justice to maintain.
Well has he studied o'er and o'er
The Vedas and their kindred lore.
Well skilled is he the bow to draw,
Well trained in arts and versed in law;
High-souled and meet for happy fate,
Most tender and compassionate;
The noblest of all lordly givers,
Whom good men follow, as the rivers
Follow the King of Floods, the sea:
So liberal, so just is he.

Unless the appearance [of this world] known objectively by the senses,
and the wicked ego, the knower of it, die as food to Siva,
who shines as the state of supreme consciousness,
the supreme reality cannot be attained.

General Discussion / Gayatri Japa - Procedure
« on: December 14, 2012, 10:48:24 AM »
9. Gayatri Japa

Commence the Japa facing East in the morning and West in the evening, and East or North in the Noon as the time may be, if it is before 10:30 Am the usual practice is to face East and otherwise it is to be performed facing North.

Sringeri Swamigal has said in his talks that originally the japa count was 1008, but it has shrunk to 108, which has still been shrunk owing to lifestyles these days to 108, 32 and 64 morning, noon and evening respectively.

Elders usually advise at least to perform the sahasra japa on sundays which is auspicious for Sun and Gayatri Japa.

In the morning, one has to perform standing facing east and one has to cover ones fingers and keep it just before ones face (near nose) with uttareeya, or angavastra.

In the noon and evening one can perform the japa seated on mat. In the noon, one has to keep ones fingers just as above near the bosom, heart region and perform the count facing east or north as the case may be and in the evening, one has to keep ones fingers near the navel and perform the japa facing west.

i will present the methods of keeping the count of japa in the discussion in the days to come.

Om bhUrbhuvassuvah .
Om tat savitur varENyam
bhargO dEvasya dhImahi .
dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt ..

At each line as give above, it would be effective if we can pause for a second and then commence with the next line, instead of just chanting it fast. The primary requisite for performance of Japa is PATIENCE. We will also see more on Japa in the discussion thread.

Ideally, if one can perform 108 counts at all the three sandyas, i.e., morning, noon and evening, it is best, the general practice is as follows:

Morning: 108 counts
Noon: 32 counts
Evening: 64 counts

On your locks are the river ganga and the moon.
On your feet and arms are the cold serpents.
Your left part is the compassionate daughter of the snow mountains.
And you have the cool sandal smeared all over your body.

How, O Lord of the golden cosmic hall,
are you able to bear such cold (chill)?
[O' Lord] You are welcome to stay eternally in my heart
- which is warm (hot) due to the sins I have committed.

This shloka is so wonderful, packed with emotion and love and an intense yearning. Appaiah Dhikshita Sings looking at the Nataraja, O Lord, Thou art having the cool Ganges always flowing over your head along with the cool moon, what to say of your limbs, which have become the residing place of cold and dreaded serpents, Your left part? it is occupied by the daughter of Himagiri (Himalayas Snow mountain), whose compassion knows no bounds, and in such cold surrounding, all of your body is  smeared with cool sandal paste! O Lord! who art the Lord of the kanaka Sabha, Cosmic Golden Hall, How are you able to bear such cold and chill? I pray Thou cool self, please consider and reside within me, my heart, chitta, which is very hot, as a result of various karmas, sufferings, and ignorance! Subside the burning heart by casting thou grace upon me, by the cool touch of Thy holy feet. Soak me (Heat, mind, ego) with Thou (Cool, Self, Atma) (not exact translation, just my own expression)
