Mahodaya Punakala Ayyankulam pond dipping event turned tragic claiming at least four lives. Ashram reports with great sadness the loss of the life of one its most valuable priest volunteer Prof. Manikandan of SKP Engineering college, Tiruvannamalai. The attached Navaratri decorations and Sri Vidya havan worship speak for themselves for the greatness of this great Devi Upasaka.
Between 6:30 AM and 6:40 AM there was some commotion as devotees were standing in the steps of the Ayyankulam tank. Some twenty people slipped and fell in the Pond. Many of them were rescued but some were caught in the sludge below the water and lost their lives. We pray to Sri Ramana Maharshi to grant peace to his relatives and friends in this difficult time.

Sri Niranjananda Swamigal Day

There was grand worship at the ashram all through the day concluding with special Sri Chakra Puja in the evening. The birth star of the Master (Punarvasu) happened to coincide with the aradhana of Sri Niranjananda Swamigal's (Bhagavan's brother Sri Chinnaswamigal) and full moon day.
The life of Sri Niranjananda Swamigal was not easy. His brother was a great Jnani who was regarded by many people as father, mother, Guru and God. Even animals like squirrels, cows and monkeys looked upon the Master as a very dear relative. Under these circumstances devotees did not think much of his blood relationship. Thus Sri Niranjananda Swamigal had to assert his authority over people who all felt like a King before the great Master. The grace of Sri Ramana Maharshi sustained him but not without his having to face many seeming challenges. A wonderful temple Mathrubutheswara temple - stands testimony to his dedicated service for decades to Sri Ramana ashram.

Sri Sadasiva Swami recalls with a sense of thrill his association with Sri Niranjanananda Swami. It is well-known that the Sarvadhikari was a vigilant task-master, who would not tolerate neglect of one's duty on any account. When the Sarvadhikari on one occasion found fault with Sri Sadasiva Swami he had to leave the Ashram in silent indignation. He walked all the way to Tirukoilur, twenty miles off and he could walk no more. When he went to the railway station and got into the train, whom should he find but the Sarvadhikari who was on a trip to Tiruchuli, Bhagavan's birthplace ! Sri Niranjanananda Swami lovingly took him along to Tiruchuli. And, the latter was convinced that there was nothing but love in the heart of the former. This generated an attitude of love and reverence to Sri Niranjanananda Swami in this devotee and no wonder he had the opportunity to serve him in his last days.

Dear Graham

May Lord Ramana Bhagavan's grace showers on you to relieve  the pain

HEALING GRACE
By M. V. Ramaswami Iyer

IN the year 1907 I went to Tiruvannamalai to have darshan of Bhagavan. I climbed up to the Virupaksha cave. In order to safeguard Bhagavan from the intruding pilgrims of the Kartikai festival, one Krishnayya kept guard at the gate of the cave. So I had to wait outside till Bhagavan came out. He soon came out and went away without even glancing at me. I followed and overtook him. He stopped and looked at me. Words poured out of my mouth, "I am suffering, beset with many diseases. Have mercy on me". He replied, "I am neither a physician nor a magician. What can I do or tell you". Anguish welled up from the depths of my heart, and I said, "I came because I heard of your greatness. Will not my good luck be as great"? He looked at me for a long moment and said, "Go home, have courage. No harm will come to you". And he waved his hand in a peculiar way. Somehow it gave me hope.

Soon I settled at Tiruvannamalai and thus began my daily visits to Bhagavan, sometimes staying for the night with him. One day Bhagavan was sitting all alone in front of Virupaksha cave. A strange emotion got hold of me and I asked him in English, "My Lord, Jesus and other great souls have come down to earth to save sinners like me. Is there hope for me"? Bhagavan seemed moved by my cry of distress. He came closer and said in a quiet voice, "Yes, there is hope, there is hope."

Bhagavan and Yogi Ramaiah

When I returned home a song welled up in my mind and I wrote it down. Since then I wrote songs by Bhagavan's grace. When I brought my first song to Bhagavan and recited it before him, he gave me some instructions in prosody and illustrated them with examples from great Telugu poets. Since them I wrote songs and poems without much thought or effort all the years until Bhagavan's samadhi. Then the spring dried up, for it was not a gift I brought with me. It was all His grace.

My physical ailments tormented me so much that on a festival day I was plunged in deep dejection. When Echammal brought some special food in the evening, all except me went to the nearby waterfall to have their meal. Everything was pleasant and joyous but my mind was full of darkness and my body full of pain. Bhagavan sent Vasudeva Sastri to call me. I said that the rich food did not agree with me and that I had to stick to my diet. As I spoke my head turned towards Bhagavan as if impelled by some superior force and I saw him beckon to me. I went near and sat down. I was served various dishes. I had no courage to eat and was sitting gloomily when Bhagavan said, "Eat". All fear gone, I started eating and had my first hearty meal in many years. That night I had a sound sleep.

In the morning I felt strong and healthy. My dyspepsia had disappeared completely and my heart overflowed with gratitude. Bhagavan's grace continued to manifest in my life and helped me overcome all family problems. When I was transferred to Berhampore I was afflicted with boils on my legs. The pain was terrible and all medication failed. I had a fixed idea that only Arunachala could help me. One day I was surprised to find two Brahmins from Tiruvannamalai standing at my door. When I asked who knocked they replied, `Arunachala'. They were on their way to the North and had been asked by Bhagavan to break journey at Berhampore and meet me. When they saw my pitiable condition they made a paste of tamarind mixed with some fragrant gum and smeared my legs with it. The next day there was no trace of boils. It was then that I composed the song Saranagati in praise of the Holy Feet of Bhagavan, my only refuge. This famous song has often been sung by devotees for invoking the grace of Bhagavan.

Predawn worship during the month of Margazhi concluded today. Ashram
observed the anniversary of Sri Ramaswami Pillai affectionately known as cycle Swami. He used to lead the Tamil Parayanam before Bhagavan being blessed with a good voice. Swami was a true Karma Yogi. Once during his daily walk on the hill Bhagavan slipped and fell injuring his foot. Without saying a word to any one, Ramaswami Pillai set out next day to make a path up the hill, shoring up the steep slope into steps, chiselling steps in the slabs of rock, putting a firm stone edge to the path. From dawn to dusk he worked, single handed, for weeks together, until the path was made. Even after all the years of monsoon rain beating down on it the path is still serviceable thus providing a testimony to the service of Ramaswamy Pillai.

Today Sri Krishna Das enthralled the audience with his soul-stirring Bhajans in the ashram auditorium. Ashram arranged special large screen TV under large Shamiyana to accommodate the overflow crowd. Thank you Sri Krishna Das for the grand devotional Bhajans.
Once again a very happy Pongal to you and your loved ones.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: December 17, 2015, 07:20:24 PM »
A Vaishnava devotee, who was a high official  at Simla, brought all the idols that he worshipped daily, and handed them to Sri Bhagavan, probably desiring the sanctity of Sri Bhagavan's touch. Sri Bhagavan seemed much interested in examining them. The devotee said, `Bhagavan, people scoff at me, calling me a "superstitious idolater".

Sri Bhagavan told him, 'Why don't you retort by calling them worse idolaters? For do they not wash, dress, embellish, feed and thus "worship" their body so many times every day? Is not the body the biggest idol? Then who is not an idol worshipper?'
Though Bhagavan occasionally made disparaging remarks about traditional practices such as idol worship, he did not like his devotees to criticise such activities. If they did, he would not support them.

Once, for example, someone asked Bhagavan, 'Is it not foolish to make idols and worship them when we know that God is formless?'

Bhagavan answered in a characteristic way by saying, `Who is not doing idol worship? From the moment of waking in the morning, everyone is engaged continuously in idol worship. How? By taking the body, which is only a mental image, to be real and by treating it like a temple statue. You bathe it, comb its hair and offer food to it three times a day. Who has escaped from this idol worship?

Namaskaram generally denotes a physical prostration, but Bhagavan gave it a higher meaning:

Bhagavan: The true meaning of namaskaram is the ego bowing its head and getting destroyed at the feet of the Guru.'

A certain lady, who had a lot of devotion, performed a traditional ritual for worshipping sages whenever she came into Bhagavan's presence ,to have darshan. She would prostrate to Bhagavan, touch his feet and then put the hands that had touched Bhagavan's feet on her eyes. After noticing that she did this daily, Bhagavan made the following remarks:

Only the Supreme Self, which is ever shining in your Heart as the reality, is the Sadguru. The pure awareness, which is shining as the inward illumination 'I', is his gracious feet. The contact with these [inner holy feet] alone can give you true redemption. Joining the eye of reflected consciousness [chidabhasa], which is your sense of individuality (jiva bodha], to those holy feet, which are the real consciousness, is the union of the feet and the head that is the real significance of the word `asi'. As these inner holy feet can be held naturally and unceasingly, hereafter, with an inward-turned mind, cling to that inner awareness that is your own real nature. This alone is the proper way for the removal of bondage and the attainment of the supreme truth.

' Asi', which means 'are' refers to the mahavakya 'tat tvam asi' (you are that). Bhagavan's metaphor indicates that the inner state of being consciousness. is revealed when individuality is merged in the 'holy feet' of pure consciousness.
