"Learn as much as possible in your youth!"

?This whole world is one big family whose parents are Parvathi and Parameswara. The first verse of Kalidasa?s Raghuvamsam portrays this truth. The teachers and you are living like a small family. As children you have to learn as much as possible in your youth.

There are two aspects to learning: one is devotion to the guru and the other is morality and personal discipline. Students should avoid getting angry and not criticize anyone or anybody. Just like we maintain a diet while taking medication, while obtaining education, refrain from talking about freedom or disobeying the instructions of elders.

Guru Bhakti, moral righteousness and humility are essential for a student. Children who are humble in their youth will rise high later in their life.

Devotion to mother, father and guru (matrubhakthi, pitru bhakthi and guru bhakthi) are all key for you. You should strive to remove the ego that destroys. Avvaiyar has said that mother and father are the primary gods. The Vedas also say the same thing.

When you are studying, do not interfere in worldly activities. You might ask, ?Isn?t it necessary to do service for the well being of the world?? It is definitely necessary to do service. However, first obtain all the knowledge needed in this world to do the service. You have to think that your studying is your contribution to the world and involve yourself in it completely.?

The above is a summary of Kanchi Maha Swamigal?s lecture on December 18th, 1932 to the students at Hindu Theological High School situated on Thangasalai Road, Chennai.

One more incident illustrating the power of following the teachings of the Guru v/s worshipping the form of the Guru from an incident in Kanchi Paramacharya's Life :

I can recollect one incident of Kanchi Mahaswamigal who during his Yatras was camping at a particular town and one of his close devotees wanted to be with him all the time and stay with him close by and that devotee felt that if he did that then he may have to forgo his daily nityakarmas ( like Sandhya Vandanam , Gayathri Japa etc ) and Kanchi Paramacharya always insisted his devotees to do one's Nitya Karmas without fail even if they are sick . So he stuck to doing the Nitya Karmas eventhough he was upset that he could not have darshan of Kanchi Mahaswamigal . But one day after  finishing the evening Nitya Karmas he came out of his house and was surprised to see Kanchi Mahaswamigal standing in front of his house and he could not believe his eyes and before he could explain , Paramacharya himself said people take strain to meet him but in doing so they forgo their Nitya Karmas and people who sincerely follow his teachings ( i.e doing Nitya Karmas ) he would himself give the darshan wherever they are .

The last few deays I have been re-reading the teachings of Sringeri Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal and he keeps on hitting at this point regularly i.e if one keep's following one's Nitya Karmas sincerely , then God will himself life that person to the next level and let there be no doubt in this .

Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal of Sringeri on Guru Tattva . Many identify only the Guru with the form and weep after the Guru has departed and here Sringeri Acharya says that is a wrong attitude .

Once, Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Swami had camped in Bangalore Sankara Mutt. The Acharya discoursed every day. On the day of His departure a devotee began to shed profuse tears even as he received the ?mantrakshada? from the Acharya.

Sri Acharya asked him the reason behind his tears and the devotee explained that it was due to his inability to bear the separation from the Acharya. He explained that the very thought that from the morrow he would not be able to see or listen to his Guru caused him grief; and, that he wondered if he (the devotee) would be alive to have the good fortune of having the Acharya?s darshan during his next visit. On hearing this, the Acharya asked, ?Who is that Guru who gave you darshan daily and gave ?upadesh???

And, said, ?If, even after listening to me you grieve thus it only shows that my ?upadesh? and your hearing them have both been in vain. To restrict the Guru to this physical body made up of the five elements is verily ignorance. The term ?Guru? refers to a very high philosophy. It is beyond time and space and is the acting force behind our buddhi. If only you would understand the Guru tattva in the right perspective, your mind will not grieve. And you would have realized the truth that your Guru is ever with you, inseparable from you. There is no separation at all. Realize this now and do not grieve.?

The vasanas arise because of the habits and practices of previous lifetimes. That is why they differ from jnani to jnani.
When vasanas rise in ordinary people who still identify with the
body and the mind, they cause likes and dislikes. Some vasanas are embraced wholeheartedly while others are rejected as being undesirable. These likes and dislikes generate desires and fears which in turn produce more karma. While you are still making judgements about what is good and what is bad, you are identifying with the mind and making new karma for yourself. When new karma has been created like this, it means that you have to take another birth to enjoy it.
The jnani's body carries out all the acts which are destined for
it. But because the jnani makes no judgment about what is good or bad, and because he has no likes and dislikes, he is not creating any new karma for himself. Because he knows that he is not the body, he can witness all its activities without getting involved in them in any way.
There will be no rebirth for the jnani because once the mind has been destroyed there is no possibility of any new karma being created.

Q: Bhagavan often told devotees to 'Be still'. Did he mean ?Be mentally still'?
AS: Bhagavan's famous instruction ?summa iru' [be still] is often misunderstood. It does not mean that you should be physically still; it means that you should always abide in the Self.
If there is too much physical stillness, tamoguna [a state of mental torpor] arises and predominates. In that state you will feel very sleepy and mentally dull. Rajoguna [a state of excessive mental activity], on the other hand, produces emotions and a mind which is restless.
In sattva guna [a state of mental quietness and clarity] there is stillness and harmony. If mental activity is necessary while one is in sattva guna it takes place. But for the rest of the time there is stillness. When tamoguna and rajoguna predominate, the Self cannot be felt. If sattvaguna predominates one experiences bliss, clarity and an absence of wandering thoughts. That is the stillness that Bhagavan was prescribing.

Mind is only a collection of thoughts and the thinker who thinks them.
The thinker is the 'I'-thought,
the primal thought which rises from the Self before all others and says,
'I am this body'.
When you have eradicated all thoughts except for the thinker himself
by ceaseless enquiry or by refusing to give them any attention,
the 'I'-thought sinks into the Heart and surrenders,
leaving behind it only an awareness of consciousness.
This surrender will only take place when the 'I'-thought has
ceased to identify with rising thoughts.
While there are still stray thoughts which attract you or evade your attention,
the 'I'-thought will always be directing its attention outwards rather than inwards.
The purpose of self-enquiry is to make the 'I'-thought move inwards,
towards the Self.
This will happen automatically as soon as you
cease to be interested in any of your thoughts.

    Biography Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Swamiji -the new Acharya of Sringeri Sharada peetam

    Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Swamiji was born as Sri Kuppa Venkateshwara Prasada Sharma on the auspicious Naga Panchami day ? July 24, 1993 ? in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Born as the second son of Sri Kuppa Shivasubrahmanya Avadhani and Smt. Seetha Nagalakshmi, He belonged to the Kaundinya Gotra and is a native of Anantavaram, Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh. His family has a long lineage of illustrious Vedic Pandits who were all ardent disciples of the Srungeri Jagadgurus.

    Family Background

    In 1961, when the 35th Jagadguru of Sringeri, Sri Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Mahaswamiji visited the Anantavaram village, the Sri Prasada Sharma?s grandfather?s elder brother, Sri Bhairagi Shastri welcomed the Jagadguru with sincere devotion, performed Pada Puja and received His blessings. In 1985, Sri Shastri also had the good fortune of welcoming and serving the present Jagadguru of Srungeri. Sri Prasada Sharma?s grandfather?s elder brother, Sri Kuppa Venkatachalapati Yaaji, embraced Sannyasa in 2002 with the permission of the Srungeri Jagadguru.

    Sri Prasada Sharma?s grandfather, Sri Kuppa Ramagopala Vajapeya-Yaaji is an eminent Vedic Pandit of the Krishna Yajur Veda and has performed the Shrauta Yaga of Vaajapeya. Deeply devoted to the Jagadgurus of Srungeri., Sri Vajapeya-Yaaji has participated in many Vedic ceremonies at Srungeri Sharada Peetham.
    Sri Prasada Sharma?s father, Sri Kuppa Shivasubrahmanya Avadhani studied at the Jagadguru Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Shastra Samvardhini Pathashala in Hyderabad, that was established by Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji. He became an eminent Pandit in Veda and Veda Bhashya with great devotion to the Jagadgurus of Srungeri. He is presently the Principal of the TTD Veda Vigjnana Peetham in Tirumala and Project Officer, S.V. Institute of Higher Vedic Studies, TTD


    From a young age, Sri Prasada Sharma developed a deep devotion towards Lord Krishna and visited the Krishna temple near his home, every day. Seeing his son?s devotion, Sri Shivasubrahmanya Avadhani performed his Upanayana (sacred thread ceremony) at the age of fve. His frst lessons in Krishna Yajurveda were taught by his grandfather, Sri Kuppa Ramagopala Vajapeya-Yaaji. Showing rapid progress, Sri Prasada Sharma continued his studies up to Krishna Yajur Veda Krama under his father.

    He grew up in an environment steeped in devotion to God and adherence to a Vedic way of living. Hamsaladeevi is a holy place in Andhra Pradesh where the Krishna river meets the ocean. Tere, on the banks of the river, is a beautiful temple dedicated to Venugopala Swamy. For the last 95 years, without a break, his family has conducted an annual Bhagavata Saptaha at this temple. Sri Prasada Sharma attended this sacred event from an early age. He also accompanied his father on pilgrimages to holy places such as Ayodhya, Haridwar, Hrishikesh, Kashi, Kalady, Madurai, Mathura, Pashupathinath (in Nepal), Rameswaram and Ujjain.
    Education in Srungeri

    Starting in 2006, when he was 13 years old, Sri Prasada Sharma began to accompany his father and grandfather who were participating in the Dharmic events at Srungeri Sharada Peetham. During his frst visit, the Darshan of the present Jagadguru, Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji had a profound impact on him. He visited Sringeri again in 2008, and during his subsequent visit in early 2009, he expressed to the Jagadguru his desire to study Shastras under Him. Touched by the young boy?s sincerity and impressed with his intelligence, the Jagadguru blessed him and Sri Prasada Sharma took refuge under the Lotus Feet of the Jagadguru in June 2009.

    Under the guidance of the Jagadguru, he rapidly gained mastery in written and spoken Sanskrit. Srungeri Vidwan Sri Tangirala Shivakumara Sharma taught him Sanskrit poetry and literature. He also learned the basics of Vyakarana Shastra under Sringeri Vidwan Sri Krishnaraja Bhat.

    Observing his Guru Bhakti, humility, intelligence and dedicated application to his studies, the Jagadguru was pleased and decided to personally teach him the Shastras. The Jagadguru began to teach him the Tarka Shastra in 2011. Sri Prasada Sharma grasped the teachings quickly and the lessons moved at an intense pace. Even during the hectic Vijaya Yatra of 2012-13, the Jagadguru continued to teach him without missing even a single day. The Jagadguru soon transformed him into a great Tarka scholar. When he spoke at Srungeri Sharada Peetham?s prestigious Ganapati Vakhyartha Vidwat Sadas, an annual conference of the nation?s foremost Shastric Pandits, the attendees were taken by surprise at the young man?s scholarship.

    Under the guidance of the Jagadguru, Sri Prasada Sharma also studied Mimamsa Shastra. He regularly attended the nightly Chandramoulishwara Puja performed by the Jagadguru. During this Puja, he also chanted the entire Krishna Yajur Veda Moola and the entire Yajur Veda Krama.

    Sri Prasada Sharma always had a pleasing and helpful demeanor. Stories about his intelligence and learning capabilities spread quickly. Soon, other students started seeking his help. While pursuing his own learning, he also began teaching the Vedas, Sanskrit literature and Tarka Shastra to other students. He subsequently began his studies in Vedanta under the Jagadguru.

    Through these five and half years of intense study (2009-15) under the direct tutelage of the Jagadguru, Sri Prasada Sharma became steeped in the Vedic tradition and blossomed in many ways as a student, scholar, teacher and devotee. The Jagadguru was pleased by his Guru Bhakti, devotion to God, deep immersion in his studies, scholarship and respect towards elders. He was beloved by all and had developed a strong inner core of dispassion and discrimination for pursuing a spiritual path.


    The Srungeri Guru Parampara lineage has been central to the preservation and growth of Sanatana Dharma. The induction of Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Swamiji is therefore an event of historic importance to followers of Sanatana Dharma throughout the world.

Yes,I understand that and the great Sage is indeed pointing to the attainment of the state of sahaja only.Only he is emphasizing on proceeding from wherever one is and in consonance with one's nature.He hence wisely refrains from defining how life ought to be lived and is just giving useful hints and clues here and there-and thus prodding the earnest learner to do this homework at his own pace and with his own syllabus!
Tiruvalluvar is hailed as poiyyaa mozhi pulavar-The Sage whose words can never be falsified.His setting forth of the couplets is such that they are free from any reference to any particular country,Religion,Sex,community,Times,etc.Truly universal.

The above piece if  Sri Ravi's response to Sri Anil in Anil's Thread . The sentance highlighted in Bold needs to be reflected upon . The Majority of the people today expect spoon feeding to all the problems that they encounter ( in the secular matters as well as spiritual matters ) and expect all the solutions to be given in detail and on a platter without the need for the individual to do his /her basic homework . The fault lies in the way Education is being taught in schools and Univerties which are only Uni dimensional and superficial and training an individual just to get a degree that enables him to get a job . Today one can see many so called Highly Educated people syffering from depression especially in Urban India .  Tamil has a beautiful word for education and it is called "Kalvi ( educated in a holistic sense ) " , what one learns in University is called "Padippu ( i,e qualified in a subject )" .We confuse Padippu with Kalvi and that is where the whole problem lies .
Saint Thiruvalluvar has many Kurals related to Kalvi and when he talks of Kalvi he means in a holistic sense and not a narrow view of being qualified in a particular subject .
