Dear Sri Ravi

Thanks for your reply . If you can transcribe Paramacharya's talk fully in English and present it here it would be very useful for everyone . Though I got the essence of the same I could not follow his voice very clearly ( I have read more of Paramacharya's transcribed talks through the book " Voice of God " but never heard his voice much ) . No hurry . Take your time .In the meanwhile I am searching the net for more info about Vishnu Sahasranama that Paramacharya and others have shared .

Avani Avittam ( Upakarma ) falls on Thu 18 August 2016 this year and given below is a short and clear explanation of the signifcance of this wonderful Vedic Ritual by Sri Velukkudi Krishnan in Tamil .Whether we do it or not do it or just symbolically do it , it is better we understand first the significance of the same and try our best to follow the spirit behind this wonderful Vedic ritual .

Sure Ravi .I concur with you but the main point I want to highlight is that Kanchi Mahaswamigal's emphasis on chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama on many of the occassions and a few have been listed here and whatever so called "miracles" we have to leave it to the devotees and we can neither confirm nor deny that .
But regarding  Kanchi Paramacharya I have found one thing common i.e asking people to chant "Vishnu Sahasranama" when they are going on a padayatra or on other mass gatherings . Whether he did that  to prevent people from indulging in idle gossip or for any other purpose only he knows and rest is our own inference . Even during the last moments of Kanchi Paramacharya there was mass chanting of Vishu Sahasranama like the way Arunachala  Akshara Mana Malai was chanted during the last moments of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi .

Anyway here is an audio clip on greatness of Vishnu Sahasranama by Kanchi Mahaswamigal in his own voice

Experiences with Maha Periyava: For a Brahmin, the karmas such as sandhya vandanam are the most important; there is nothing loftier than them.

It was in the year 1963. Sri Maha Periyava was camping in Marudanallur. The Tiruppavai-Tiruvempavai conference was held in a grand manner in the Kumbesvara Temple, Kumbakonam. Sri Bhatavatsalam was then the chief minister of Tamilnadu. P.T.Rajan who did the tiruppani (holy works) of Madurai Meenakshi Temple and the Tamilnadu chief minister visited the place. It was the time of sandhya kalam (dusk). I was sitting near Periyava with a desire to listen to his anugraha bhashanam (blessed speech). When he was about to commence his upanyasam, Maha Periyava looked at me, folded his palms as if doing Achamana (sipping water as purification in a Hindu ritual) and gestured me to go out, thus making me realise that I should not skip my sandhya vandanam at sandhya kalam for listening to an upanyasam. I went forthwith to do the sandhya vandanam at the holy pond.

At ten o' clock that night, without our inviting him, he visited our home in the MelaKaveri (west of Kaveri) and did paramanugraham for more than an hour. He thus made explicit the truth that for a Brahmin, the karmas such as sandhya vandanam are the most important; there is nothing loftier than them. ?If a Brahmin does his duties regularly, I shall call on him personally and give my anugraham (blessings). He who does not do his dharma properly need to come seeking me.?

The following is an English Translation of the Tamil version that I posted earlier with some added info . This incident not only narrates the greatness of Vishnu Sahasranama but also points out that there is no difference between Shiva and Vishnu .

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Power of Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama and Oneness of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu

Once Sri Maha Periyava was camping in Mylapore and it was Pradosham day. He was suffering from high fever. It must have been about 2 o? clock in the afternoon and there was no sign of Periyava recovering. Devotees who had turned up in large numbers to watch Him perfom Abhishekam and Pradosha Pooja to Lord Shiva were worried about His health. Perhaps they felt there was no way Periyava would recover that day. Do ordinary mortals like us know the leelas of the Mahan Atma?

All of a sudden He called his attendants to inform the Vedic Scholars nearby to assemble immediately and start chanting Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam continuously. At about 3 o?clock, as people around were chanting Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Maha Periyava started sweating profusely and His fever vanished. He took a bath and started performing Abhishekam and Pradosha Pooja to the Lord.

Sri Maha Periyava showed us a living example of the importance of chanting Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam. On a day auspcious to Lord Shiva, his suggestion to chant Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam emphasized the oneness of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Thirdly, He could easily get rid of any ailment but His suffering from fever suggested His belief in Prarabda Karma and how one can get rid of the three Karmas (Prarabda, Sanchita and Aagaami) through pure devotion.

Dear Sri Ravi

The above quote is from a series of quotes and  I am getting them from the last couple of days from an American friend of mine through email . I guess the issue is again between fate and free will and I guess it is trying to say that there is no free will and only apparent free will for eg : I go to a place for eating and only 3 dishes are available named A,B,C and the person with free will says " I have a choice to select one ofthe dishes A.B,C " but the person with fate says "You are forced in a sitaution where you could make a choice between A,B,C " but another person could enter a hotel and have a choice to select from 5 dishes A,BC,D,E ( i.e better choices )  or for some people they have no choice but to eat in a hotel that has only 1 choice i.e only dish A and still many people who cant even afford to go to a hotel to eat and like this one can workout many possibilities .
So this is what they are trying to say i.e you have a free will but that free will is conditioned ( i.e can make only apparent choices ) and not absolute ( This is my guess ) .

Got this today in my email .The author of the quote is not important . But we have to reflect the truth of the same in our own lives .

Apparent Choice

Yesterday's reflection stated that there is no "you" in control or making choices. The experience of having no choice can be absolutely liberating. The experience is showing you that life is just happening spontaneously.

Yet, paradoxically, apparent choice arises. Out of nowhere comes a thought that you have a choice between two options: between continuing to replay a past resentment or allowing awareness to see that resentment as nothing more than presently arising thought and emotion.

Notice that even this apparent choice arises spontaneously and involuntarily. Then experience and enjoy the choice. Making choices apparently happens within the dream of the thought-based, time-bound self. Do not try to suppress that self. Just see that it is a dream of time, a dream that you are a person who has control and who can choose to do something now to bring about some future outcome.

Enjoy apparent choice but see it for what is truly is ... a dream of thought. The dream of self, and therefore the dream of apparent choice, arises spontaneously and involuntarily from the choiceless, timeless, formless presence that you really are.

Here is a Kanchi Paramacharya's Devotees experience with regard to the power of Chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam to bring in peace between 2  communities

https://mahaperiyavaa.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/vishnu-sahasranamam-japam/

I will narrate an incident I witnessed personally. It was February,1972, a day or so before Shivaratri.. Mahaperiyava was staying at Shivastanam. I was then working in Nagpur but had gone to have darshan of Mahaperiyava, with a friend of mine from Madras. We were about 20-25 persons standing there before him. He talked to each one of us by turn, enquiring about our purvikam. After some time a group of villagers suddenly entered there amid some noise. There had been some Hindu-Muslim disturbances in and around Arni those days and the villagers started talking about them. Mahaperiyava listened closely and started questioning the villagers ? he asked them whether they had been personally affected, whether any one of them was actually hurt, whether they were beaten or pelted with stones, whether their dwellings were damaged, whether any weapons or sticks were used, who started it all and how, whether they resorted to violence first or merely responded in kind, etc.. This went on for about half an hour. Suddenly Mahaperiyava fell silent. After about 5 minutes, he asked that Vishnu Sahasranamam be recited. He closed his eyes, and placed on his head some garland of Tulsi leaves which was lying before him. The Sastrigals who were there started the recital, which was joined in by others in the group who knew. Some ladies also joined in the recital , but this was objected to by the Pandits, saying ladies should not join. ( To this day, I am not able to understand this.) Of course the ladies did not care, and the recitation went on. Mahaperiyava did not open his eyes till some time after conclusion of the recitation. He slowly opened his eyes, looked around the people in front and blessed them He asked the villagers not to be afraid. To me it appeared that Mahaperiyaval?s message that day was that group recital of Vishnu Sahasranama was an effective remedy for or protection against social disturbances.

atmavichar / ravi sir,

please tell me one thing.  as regards me, I am fully fluent on both Vishnu and lalitha sahasranama.

nowadays my mind simply refuses and is not inclined to chant all these beautiful sthothras.....all it is dwelling is on desires, lust and fear .

if someone has to learn these stothras it is different, but for someone who has heard this and can chant without seeing book ( along with others) ,  if then also I am not chanting, simply immersed in endless desires and fears, how to come out? please suggest practical tips.

Dear Kskat

I am not a Guru to give you exact solutiuon for the problem you are facing but as a fellow spiritual traveller I have found the following effective :
The mind goes through periods of Sattva , Rajas , Tamas and when it is Tamasic or Rajasic many people on the spiritual path get confused and feel guilty  more so when the mind is Tamasic . Best in that case is get group energy by attending Satsangs ( either Ramana Satsangs or any Group Satsangs like Vishnu Sahasranama Parayana , Rudra Parayana ) or be part of some spiritual group tours ( expecially where there is weekend trip etc ) . This will help turn your Tamas into Spiritual Rajas and from there soon you will come to Sattva State and once the Sattva is there , you will have more clarity and less confusion .
When in Tamas never spend time alone .Just go out ,visit a Temple or take part in some satsang or join a spiritual group tour to Tirupathi , Thiruvanamali etc . This is the first stage and once you keep doing this  the rest will fall into place auto matically .

Quote
So,there is nothing that is truly not in line with the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi....every teaching has its place and time...and Vishnu Sahasranamam is something that Sri Adi Sankara has written a commentary on...and as long as people learn to chant it (even with whatever expectations)it is good....later on they can come to benefit by getting to understand it.

Very True .  I have found Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam as the best starting point for those who are interested in being on the spiritual path  and who also have a very big guilt that they do not follow the Traditional Karmas ( like Sandhya Vandanam , Pitru Karma , Visit to Temples , Observing Ekadasi fast etc etc ) .  I was myself like that many years back and after taking to regular chanting of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama ( along with my Yoga Sadhana ) things started to fall in place . The 6 Questions asked by Yudishtra to Bhishma which provides the context for which Vishnu Sahasranama came about is the question every person confused on the spiritual path will ask . The questions have been already posted by Sri Ravi and I  will again Post it here :

1. kimEkam dhaivatam lokE?
Who is the greatest Lord in the world?

2. kim vaapyEkam parAyaNam?
Who is the one refuge of all?

3. stuvantam kam prApnuyuh mAnavah subham?
By glorifying whom, can man attain peace and prosperity?

4. kam arcanat prApnuyuh mAnavaah subham?
By worshipping whom can man reach auspiciousness?

5. kO dharmah sarva dharmANaam bhavatah paramO matah?
What is, in thy opinion, the greatest Dharma?

6. kim japam mucyatE jantur janma samsAra bandhanAth?
By doing Japa of what, can creature go beyond the bonds and cycle of birth and death?

The answer to all these is simple : Chant the 1000 Names of Lord Vishnu . This was given by Bhishma in the Presence of Lord Krishna ( who was an avathara of Lord Vishnu itself ) .

So instead of having guilt about not doing once Nitya Karmas etc if we daily chant the Sahasranama ( even if it is for Material Benefits ) we will find lot of positive things happening in our life and in due course we will find ourselves chanting it not just  for material benefit but also for the spiritual well being . Sri Adi Shankara has given an excellent commentary on the same and according to many Vedantina teachers  these 1000 names are an excellent tool for our own Niddhidhyasanam .

Sri Kanchi Mahaswamigal always requested people who were accompanying him in his Pada Yatra  to Chant Vishnu Sahasranamam and also before his Maha samadhi this wonderful stotra was recited twice .
This stotra can be chanted for an auspicious occassion  and also when people are in distress ( due to illness or death ) .
I will continue to write more about this and as I said the intention is not just for material wellbeing but also for one's spiritual growth that Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam must be chanted and that is the primary motive behind the starting of this thread .

357
For those first-grade sadhus who aspire only to reach the Feet of Lord Siva [God], it is better to live as an object to be pitied in the eyes of the worldly people rather than to be envied.

('Guru Vachaka Korai', v. 665.)

Today 15 August 2016 is India's Independence day and so sharing the MESSAGE GIVEN BY HIS HOLINESS Sri Kanchi Mahaswamigal on 15 AUGUST 1947 ? Independence Day .
https://mahaperiyavaa.wordpress.com/2013/08/14/maha-swamijis-independence-day-message/

On this happy occasion when our country Bharat has attained Independence, the people of this ancient country must pray whole heartedly and with one mind to Sri Bhagavan. Let us all pray to God to vouch safe to us strength of mind and energy to engage ourselves more and more in attaining spiritual knowledge. It is only by the grace of Almighty that we can safeguard the freedom that we have achieved and also help all the living beings on earth to lead a happy life.

It is worthy to note that luckily the Chakra of Bhagavan, who is the embodiment of Dharma, has its place in the centre of our National Flag. This Chakra reminds us of the moral values enjoined by Emperor Ashoka, who is historically famous as Devanampriyaha. Further, the Chakra makes us contemplate on the spiritual discipline imparted by Bhagavan Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita. That Dharma which shines in the form of a Chakra is clear from Lord Krishna?s reference to the Chakra as ?Evam pravartitam chakram? in Verse 16 of the III chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. Also in Verses 14 and 15 of the same chapter Bhagavan avers that ? The human body originates from food, food grains grow because of rains, rain showers because of performance of Yajnas(Vedic Sacrifices), these Yajnas are prescribed in the Veda and that the Veda has emanated from Brahman who is in the form of Akshara(Sound recorded as letter of the alphabet)?. Thus, the Dharma Chakra explains to us that the supreme Brahman is manifest in Vedic sacrifices. May this Independence, dawning with the rightful remembrance of Emperor Ashoka, grant us such fruits as Aram(Dharma or Righteousness) Porul(Wealth), Inbam(Happiness) and Veedu(Moksha ? deliverance), by the grace of God.

There are three stripes in our National Flag. They are of dark green, white and orange colours. These colours seem to indicate to us, that military strength for protection from enemies and evil, wealth for welfare and prosperity, and knowledge for the sake of proper administration are essential for the nation. It may be remembered that dark green is the colour of Durga ? the Parasakti who is the mother protector, Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity is of orange colour(golden hue) and Saraswathi the source divine of all knowledge is white in colour. It is a happy coincidence that the colour of the three Shakthis(Goddesses of Power) are seen in the three stripes of the National Flag.

For long, the Indian Nation has strived hard for winning freedom. By the grace of God, by the blessings of great men, and by the unique sacrifice of the people, independence has been won. Let us all pray to the Omnipresent God to shower his grace so that with the hard won freedom, our country becomes prosperous, is rid of famine, and there are no social skirmishes and the entire nation lives in an atmosphere of amity and kindness.

Now that freedom has been attained by the nation, all of us must also try to develop Independence. If we understand ourselves fully we may consider ourselves as independent. We are not capable of controlling the senses. We are unable to suppress desire and control anger, which always troubles us. Whichever thing in whatever measure we obtain does not lead us to contentment. Worldly sufferings cause worry to us. The mind gets confused on noticing these sufferings. What is the way out of all these? we must try to control, albeit gradually the mind which has been functioning vigorously for such a long time. Once the mind is set at rest, we will not be in need of anything. That state of mind which ensures complete freedom is what we must attempt to achieve.

Every day atleast some time should be set apart for practising the control of mind and bereft of other thoughts, we must meditate upon God. Then gradually, the mind will become calm, whereupon we will have the mental power to subjugate desire and anger. Spiritual knowledge will accrue fast for him who practises such meditation. Only these who attain such true spiritual knowledge can truly be independent citizens.

Any woman other than one?s wife must be respected as one?s own mother. We must regard other living beings as we would regard ourselves. Even at the risk of death, truth alone must be spoken. Petty social feuds must be averted totally, Every one must strive for improving his knowledge and his spiritual attainments and move with others in an atmosphere of kindness. We must sincerely wish that all people should live happily and peacefully.

Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha

Do Not Giveup Sandhyavandanam!

https://mahaperiyavaa.wordpress.com/2016/08/14/do-not-giveup-sandhyavandanam/

Experiences with Maha Periyava: ?Problems arose because you all gave up Sandhyavandanam!?

Once over forty Brahmins from the area, Vanniya Teynampet in Madras came to have darshan of Maha Periyava. After their obeisance to the Sage, they expressed their common mental agony that Brahmins were not able to go around in that area with respect as some atheists made fun and showed animosity whenever they came across the hair tufts, sacred threads, and Vaishnavite marks that adorned the body of a Brahmin.

As He heard this, Sri Maha Periyava asked them, ?Do you people do the Sandhyavandanam every day?? There was silence. He then advised them, ?Continue to do the Sandhyavandanam and Gayatri Japam daily. Everything will be all right.?

As advised, they started doing the Sandhyavandanam and daily. Within two months the situation changed to their complete satisfaction. They met Periyava happily and conveyed the news. Periyava told them, ?All the problems are due to your giving up the Sandhyavandanam and Gayatri mantra. The power of Gayatri mantra is immeasurable.?

If each one of us followed our respective Dharma sincerely, daily, then society will respect everyone (not only Brahmins) automatically.

In the comment section of the above article found the following incident where Mahaperiva once again reiterates the importance of Sandhya Vandanam

In the context of ?Tri kala Sandhya Vandanam?
An incident with Sri Maha Periyava during His camp in Satara. A devotee was telling his grievances ,his sufferings, his ill health, loss in business, children not studying ,no mental Peaceetc. He was advised by an astrologer to perform Navagraha Homam. His Purohit gave a huge estimate, which ,he could not afford etc.
Sri Maha Periyava listened patiently and asked him whether he performs sandhya vandanam? The devotee
hesitatingly said NO. HH asked if he remembers the Manras and the vprocedure. He said YES.. HH asked, whether he remembered the argyams?Adityam tarpayami, onwards, The man said Yes. HH asked ?why then,he was not doing Sandhya ???He said ?No time? due to his work and commitments.. HH asked him?r
to think of what he achieved by not doing Tri kaala Sandhya?.He advised him to go back and start performing Tri kala Sandhya regularly. He said during the argyam to Nava grahas and in continiation,?Kesavam tarpayaami??perfecrly, thinking of each of the Nava Grahas and the Dwadasa namam the lord , for each argyam ,..with devotion?.would help him to come out of the situation, and there would be no need to spend a huge sum for performing Nava graha Homam?.In thisvprocess, you spend only Time and No Money. HH asked him to come and see Him, after 6 months.

No need to mention?.the devotee met H H after 6 months..to thank Him saying, that, without having had to perform Nava Graha Homam etc, and by only following Hiis simple advice of performing Trinkala Sandya,
as prescribed ?vedanarayanan pune
