That which you are, your true Self, you love it, and whatever you do, you do for your own happiness. To find it, to know it, to cherish it is your basic urge.
Since time immemorial you loved yourself, but never wisely. Use your body and mind wisely in the service of the self, that is all. Be true to your own self, love your self absolutely. Do not pretend that you love others as yourself. Unless you have realized them as one with yourself, you cannot love them Don't pretend to be what you are not, don't refuse to be what you are. Your love of others is the result of self-knowledge, not its cause.
Without self-realization, no virtue is genuine. When you know beyond all doubting that the same life flows through all that is and you are that life, you will love all naturally and spontaneously. When you realize the depth and fullness of your love of yourself, you know that every living being and the entire universe are included in your affection. But when you look at anything as separate from you, you cannot love it for you are afraid of it. Alienation causes fear and fear deepens alienation. It is a vicious circle. Only Self-realization can break it. Go for it resolutely.

They rise up spontaneously in order to be extinguished in due course....
Thoughts are vasanas accumulated in innumerable [previous] births.....
Their annihilation is the aim.....

A classic Tirukkural translation is reborn

Balasubramaniam?s book is being released 54 years after it was first published

At a public lecture on May 13, 1961 at the Kapaleeswarar temple in Chennai, one member of the audience, Sarvepalli S. Radhakrishnan listened attentively to K.M. Balasubramaniam, who was speaking on the Periyapuranam . Impressed with the talk, he urged the speaker to devote his skills and translate the Tirukkural into English, just as he had rendered the Thiruvachagam .

Balasubramaniam, whose work on Manickavachagar?s composition had earned him the title of Thiruvachakamani, told Dr. Radhakrishnan, who was then the Vice-President, that he was on the job. The author then expressed his wish that he become the President. That moment came exactly a year later, on May 13. The year also witnessed the release of Balasubramaniam?s Tirukkural work, dedicated to Dr. Radhakrishnan, who had written the preface.

Now, 54 years later, the same book will be released on Wednesday for a new generation of readers.

?In Tamil literature, commentators with felicity of expression matching the original authors were placed on a par with them. K.M. Balasubramaniam was one such commentator,? said Sivalayam J. Mohan, publisher of the book. He has already published Balasubramaniam?s Thiruvachagam .

As an ardent disciple of Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar and subsequently, as collaborator of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai, he accompanied the two leaders to Bombay to meet Mohamed Ali Jinnah to discuss the idea of ?Dravida Nadu? (Dravidian land). ?Later, he became a spiritualist and delved deep into philosophy and Saivite literature. But he had a rational approach towards his translation. He even started translating Periyapuranam , but died in 1974 without completing it,? said Mr Mohan, an engineer-turned-entrepreneur.

Comprehensive, poetic

Many scholars including Rev. Fr. C.J. Beschi, popularly known as ?Viramaamunivar?, G.U. Pope, freedom fighter V.V.S. Iyer, Rajaji and V.R. Ramachandra Dikshitar have produced translations of the Tirukkural , but Balasubramaniam?s version was, to many, more comprehensive and poetic.

The point is reiterated by Kamil Zvelebil, who in his preface to the book, had said, ?at last the English speaking world will be in possession of a poetic translation of Tirukkural , in possession of an able rendering of this unique Tamil classic into English verse, which is without exaggeration and almost adequate to the original.?

Balasubramaniam also rendered into English the commentaries of Parimelazhagar, Manakudavar, and Kalingarayar, drawing substantially from parallels in the Bible and the Koran, from Shakespeare, Milton, Alexander Pope, Dryden, George Herbert, Francis Bacon and Dr. Johnson. In fact, 50 per cent of the 530 pages in the book are dedicated to detailed notes.

Suddhananda Bharathi, who has also translated Tirukkural into English, describes the essence of the book thus: ?the author takes the ideas of Valluvar, and embellishes them, so the reader needs no other commentary.?

Today 2 Oct is Gandhi Jayanthi Day and When Gandhiji is mentioned "RAM NAM" also follows and he always used to keep repeating RAM NAM . There are now some people who dispute the fact that Gandhiji uttered the name of RAM during his death and say that it was all a story spread by the Congress . Those fools do not understand the fact that Japa need not be verbal and has various layers from Gross to subtle and finally for a highly evolved soul the Japa goes on spontaneously . Gandhiji was a highly evolved soul and the Japa of RAM NAM was going inside him spontaneously and how does one know of that .Only another highly evolved soul can know and that other soul was Papaji ( a great disciple of Ramana Maharshi ) who described this experience of Gandhi in his own words "He [Gandhi] was a great saint. I could see that just by looking at his body. I didn?t need to look into his eyes. He had the most sattvic body I have ever seen. It was copper-coloured and on a subtle level it was glowing with the light of Brahman.
He had a beautiful body. The only body that I have seen that was as beautiful as his was the Maharshi?s. Both of their bodies used to shine.
I was once sitting with Gandhi when I heard the sound of ?Ram Ram? coming from him. His lips were not moving so I looked to see where the sound was coming from. As I focused on the source of the sound, I realised that it was emanating from his body. The sound was coming out of the pores of his skin. He didn?t need to repeat the name anymore. It was going on continuously inside him and flowing outwards through his skin. "
( Taken from the book "Nothing Ever Happened " by Davdi Godman ) . So at least from now on let us not spread nonsense about Great Souls without understanding the depth from which they were operating and do not pass judgements based on how they behaved at the bodily level .

A devotee asked,
?Swami, what is the easiest way to attain moksha??
Bhagavan Sri Ramana said with a smile,
?As and when the mind goes astray,
it should be turned inward and made to steady
itself in the thought of the Self.
That is the only way.?
Another devotee said,
?To do so, the repeating of the name of Rama is good, is it not??
?Certainly, it is good,? said Bhagavan Sri Ramana .
?What could be better?
The greatness of the japa
of the name of Rama is extraordinary.
In the story of Namadeva he is reported to
have told one devotee,
?If you want to know the greatness of the name of Rama
you must first know what your own name is,
what your real nature (swarupa) is,
who you are and how you were born.
Unless you know your own origin,
you will not know your name!?
This idea is found in the Abhangas
of Namadeva written in Marathi language and
in the Malayalam Adhyatma Ramayana.?
Thereupon Bhagavan Sri Ramana related a story from the latter.
IT IS STATED in that book that
when Anjaneya ( Lord Hanuman) went in search of Sita,
he seated himself opposite to Ravana in the Darbar Hall
on a high pedestal and fearlessly spoke to him thus:
?Oh Ravana,
I give you a teaching (upadesa) for attaining liberation (moksha).
Please listen to me carefully.
It is certain that the Self (Atma) gets purified
by intense devotion to Hari,
who is in the lotus of the Heart at all times.
The ego gets destroyed and
then the sin gets destroyed.
Afterwards, in its place,
the knowledge of the transcendent Self emerges.
With a pure mind and with the Bliss (Ananda)
generated by a firm knowledge of the Self,
the two letters ?Ra? ?Ma?
which are like mantras,
will repeat themselves within you automatically.
What more is required for a person
who has this knowledge,
however little it might be ?
Hence worship the lotus feet of Vishnu,
which will remove all worldly fears,
which are dear to all devotees and
which shine as brightly as the light of a crore of Suns.
Give up the ignorance of your mind?.
This has been mentioned in two or three slokas in the Sanskrit Adhyatma Ramayanam but not as elaborately as
in the Malayalam text.

Q : I was in Anandashram doing Ram nam, but to no avail.
What was I doing wrong?
Sri Papaji :
You can chant this name Ram,
but nobody knows how to chant it.
It will work to some extent if you don't know how just because it will keep your mind off distractions.
But if you know how it will be much more powerful than this.
The first thing to remember is this:
Chant the name on the breath, not with the tongue.
Let the breath chant the name, not the tongue.
Don't put a pressure on anything.
Just let the breathing in and out happen
without your notice, naturally and habitually.
Then this will continue while working, walking, shopping and sleeping.
I have seen people who have chanted this name for crores of time with no effort.
Do it this way and within days
you will see the one whose name is chanted.
In the Kali yuga there is no time for penance,
but the power of the word is tremendous.
Ram purifies.
The word "Ram" will enter your heart.
It is a raft to cross the ocean.
Let it be the last word of the last breath.
Ram will confer Freedom without practice.
Beyond everything there is nothing to do and
no appearance of anything there is only the Self
which is neither subject nor object.
This is the highest experience because there is no experiencer, just Peace. Then you know that:
I am That seated in the center of the Heart,
and this is Om Mani Padme Hum.

Annamalai Swami: Bhagavan watched me very closely in the years that I served him in the ashram. One time I went to the Mother's temple where many people were talking about worldly matters.
Bhagavan called me back, saying, 'Why should you go to that crowd? Don't go to crowded places. If you move with the crowd, their vasanas will infect you.'
Bhagavan always encouraged me to live a solitary life and not mix with other people. That was the path he picked for me. Other people got different advice that was equally good for them.
But while he actively discouraged me from socializing, he also discouraged me from sitting quietly and meditating during the years that I was working in the ashram. In this period of my life, if Bhagavan saw me sitting with my eyes closed he would call out to me and give me some work to do.
On one of these occasions he told me,
'Don't sit and meditate. It will be enough if you don't forget that you are the Self. Keep this in your mind all the time while you are working. This sadhana will be enough for you.
The real sadhana is not to forget the Self. It is not sitting quietly with one's eyes closed. You are always the Self. Just
don't forget it.'
Bhagavan's way does not create a war between the mind and the body. He does not make people sit down and fight the mind with closed eyes. Usually, when you sit in meditation, you are struggling to achieve something, fighting to gain control over the mind. Bhagavan did not advise us to engage in this kind of fight. He told us that there is no need to engage in a war against the mind, because mind does not have any real, fundamental existence. This mind, he said, is nothing but a shadow. He advised me to be continuously aware of the Self while I did the ordinary things of everyday life, and in my case, this was enough.

There is a stage in the beginning, when you identify yourself with the body, when you are still having the body-consciousness. At that stage, you have the feeling you are different from the reality or God, and then it is, you think of yourself as a devotee of God or as a servant or lover of God. This is the first stage. The second stage is when you think of yourself as a spark of the divine fire or a ray from the divine Sun. Even then there is still that sense of difference and the body-consciousness. The third stage will come when all such difference ceases to exist, and you realise that the Self alone exists.

The Tamil Month Puratasi starts from Today i.e Sat 17 Sept 2016 and is very famous for the worship of Lord Vishnu especially Lord Vishnu in the form of Tirupathi Venkateshwar and though every Satuday is auspicous for Lord Vishnu , the Saturday coming in the month of Puratassi is considered very auspicious and many observe fasts on this Saturday and given below is an article explaining how the fast behind Puratassi Saturday came to take place .

முக்தி தரும் புரட்டாசி சனிக்கிழமை

புண்ணியம் தரும் புரட்டாசி மாதம் இன்று (சனிக்கிழமை) பிறந்தது. இந்த ஆண்டு புரட்டாசி மாதம் சனிக்கிழமையில் பிறந்திருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

புரட்டாசி மாதம் என்றாலே ஏடுகுண்டலவாடா, வெங்கட்ரமணா, கோவிந்தா கோவிந்தா!? என்ற பக்தி கோஷம் திருப்பதி மலை முழுக்க எதிரொலிக்கும். புரட்டாசி சனிக்கிழமைகளில் இது இரட்டிப்பாக இருக்கும். புரட்டாசி சனிக்கிழமைக்கு இருக்கும் தனித்துவமும் மகத்துவமே இதற்கு காரணமாகும். புரட்டாசி மாத சனிக்கிழமையில் விரதம் இருந்து, மஞ்சள் ஆடை உடுத்தி, பாத யாத்திரையாக திருப்பதிக்கு சென்று ஏழுமலையானை தரிசிப்பது பேருந்து வசதி இல்லாத அந்த காலத்திலேயே இருந்தது.

சகல வசதிகளும் உள்ள இந்த நாள்களிலும் தொடர் வதுதான் வேங்கடவனின் மகிமைக்கு சான்று. மாதங்களில் நான் மார்கழியாக இருக்கிறேன் என்கிறார் பகவான் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர் ஆனால் ஏழுமலையான் எனக்கு உகந்த மாதம் புரட்சி மாதம்தான் அதிலும் சனிக்கிழமைதான் எனக்கு உகந்த நாள் என்கிறார். இதன் பின்னணியில் ஒரு கதை உள்ளது.

அந்த கதை வருமாறு:--

மன்னன் தொண்டைமானுக்கு ஏழுமலையான் மீது மற்றும், பாசமும் அதிகம். எனவே திருவேங்கடவனுக்கு ஆலயம் அமைத்து தினமும் பொன்மலர்களால் அர்ச்சனை செய்வதற்குரிய ஏற்பாடுகளை செய்திருந்தான். அதன்படியே பூஜையும் செய்து வந்தான். ஒருநாள் பூஜையின்போது பொன்மலர் களுக்கிடையே மண்மலர்களும் வந்து விழுவதைக் கண்டான். திடுக்கிட்ட அவன், அவை மண்மலர்கள்தானா எனக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கினான்.

அவை மண்மலர்கள்தான் என்பதை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பூஜையில் வந்து விழுந்த மலர்கள் சந்தேகமேயில்லாமல் நிரூபித்தன. கதவுகள் அனைத்தையும் மூடி விட்டு மன்னன் மீண்டும் பூஜையைத் தொடர்ந்தபோதும் அவ்வாறே நிகழ்ந்தது. மன்னனின் மனம் குழப்பத்துக்கு உள்ளாகியது. தனது வழிபாட்டில் ஏதேனும் பிழை இருக்குமோ என உள்ளுக்குள் வருந்தினான்.

குருவை என்ற கிராமம் ஒன்றில் பீமய்யா என்ற குயவன் ஒருவன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். பிறவியிலேயே அவனுக்கு கால் ஊனம். தனது குலத்தொழிலான மண்பாண்டங்கள் செய்தலை நேர்மை தவறாமல் ஏழுமலையான் மீது அயராத பக்தி கொண்டு செய்து வந்தான். வேங்கடவனும் அவன் பக்திக்கு மெச்சி, தன் திருவுருவத்தை அவனுக்கு கனவில் காட்டி பின்பு மறைந்து விட்டார்.

பீமய்யாவுக்கு திருமால் கனவில் காட்சியளித்த நாள், புரட்டாசி மாத சனிக்கிழமை விடியற்காலை நேரம். பீமய்யாவும், தனது கனவில் தோன்றிய திருமாலின் வடிவத்தை அப்படியே செய்தான். அதன்பின்னர் மண்ணால் ஏழுமலையானின் உருவத்தை வடித்து, மலர்கள் தூவி வழிபட்டு வந்தான். ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும் சனிக்கிழமை நாளில் தவறாமல் விரதம் அனுசரித்து வந்த பீமய்யன், பெருமாளின் சிந்தனையிலேயே தொழிலையும் செய்து வந்தான்.

இவ்விதம் தொழில் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கும் போதே, கண்மூடி தியானத்தில் ஆழ்ந்து விடுவான். அச்சமயயங்களில் தான் என்ன செய்கிறோம் என்பதை அறியா நிலையிலேயே, பிசைந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் களி மண்ணையே மலர்களாக பாவித்து பெருமாளுக்கு அர்ச்சிப்பான். காலப்போக்கில் இதுவே அவனது அன்றாட அலுவலாகவும் ஆகி விட்டது. இது இப்படியிருக்க, குழப்பத்திலிருந்த தொண்டைமான் ஒருநாள் அபூர்வக் கனவொன்றைக் கண்டான்.

அக்கனவில் வெங்கடநாதன் தோன்றி, `தமது பக்தன் பீமய்யன் செய்யும் பூஜையே தமக்கு மிகுந்த மனநிறைவை அளிப்பதாகவும், அந்தப் பூஜையை நீயும் செய்து பார், அப்போது உண்மை விளங்கும்? என்று கூறி மறைந்தார். தொண்டைமானும் திருமால் குறிப்பிட்ட இடத்துக்கு சென்று பீமய்யன் செய்யப்போகும் பூஜையை மறைந்திருந்து கவனித்தான்.

தினமும் செய்வது போலவே, பீமய்யன் தான் வடிவமைத்திருந்த வேங்கடவனின் சிலை அருகே அமர்ந்து மண்பாண்டங்களை செய்து கொண்டே, கண்மூடி மண் மலர்களைத் தூவி இறைவனை வழிபடுவதை கண்டான் தொண்டை மன்னன். உடனே பீமய்யனைச் சென்று கட்டித் தழுவிய தொண்டைமான் அவனிடம், `உன் பக்தி உயர்வான பக்தி.

உனது வழிபாட்டைத் திருமால் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு விட்டார் என்பதை நான் புரிந்து கொண்டேன்? என்றான். இதற்கிடையில் அந்தப் பரந்தாமன் பீமய்யனின் கனவிலும் தோன்றி, `உன் பக்தியின் பெருமையை என்று பிறர்கூற அறிகின்றாயோ அன்றே உனக்கு முக்தி அளித்து, வைகுந்தத்துக்கு அழைத்துக் கொள்வேன்? எனக் கூறியிருந்தார்.

அதன்படியே தொண்டைமான், பீமய்யனின் பக்தியை பாராட்டியதைக் கேட்ட மறுகணமே அவனுக்கு முக்தி கிடைத்தது. எனவே புரட்டாசி சனிக்கிழமைகளில் விரதம் இருந்து, ஏழுமலையானை மனம் உருக வழிபட்டால், செல்வமும், நிம்மதியும் கிடைக்கும் என்பதோடு, முக்தியும் வாய்க்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம்.

புரட்டாசி மாத சனிக்கிழமை விரதத்துக்கு இப்படியொரு மகத்துவம் இருக்கிறது.


Thanks Ravi I am aware of the PDF as well as  the Kindle version but I found a free Android APP of the Gospel of Ramakrishna and I have installed in my Android Tablet ( it is a like a PDF Version only but free ) .
