Saradamma: People look at Swamy ( Sri Lakshmana Swamy ) and me and think that realization must be relatively easy to achieve because we both realized the Self in a short time. However, we are exceptions. It is rare for someone to have the determination and dispassion that Swamy had during his sadhana, and it is equally rare for a devotee to be as God-intoxicated as I was.Complete surrender or earnest self-enquiry can only be effectively practiced by advanced devotees. Even Ramana Maharshi sometimes said that self-enquiry was for ripe souls only. Most people need a long period of purification to get their minds pure enough for total surrender or effective self-enquiry. Devotees ask for grace to realize the Self, but most devotees are nowhere near ready for realization; if they were given a large amount of grace the shock would kill them. For most people a preliminary period of mind purification, such as can be produced by japa or pranayama will be most useful.

Anger burns you first

The fire that you kindle for your enemy burns you first. The anger acts as a boomerang because it injures the one who becomes angry. It comes back to the angry man and harms him. Anger is a mental weakness. It begins in folly and ends in remorse. If you control anger, you will have limitless energy~Swami Sivananda

Q: We are so accustomed to maya. That is why it is so difficult for us to make progress.

AS: Again enquire, 'For whom is this difficulty?' Don't give reality to the very thing that is causing you all your trouble.

Q: Do we have no other function in the world other than discovering our own Self? Is it not our duty to show a little love and compassion to other people?

AS: If you discover yourself you will be able to give love and compassion to the whole world. It will flow automatically from you.
The sun is full of light which it gives to the world without any
partiality. If you become full of spiritual light by realizing the Self,
that light overflows everywhere. That overflowing of your Self is
love and compassion for the whole universe.

One may try to do some good to others but not much real good will result unless you know yourself. How can a blind man help other people?

Q: I can understand what you say: that we are not the body and the mind, and that this truth has to be experienced more and more. But we have to take care of this body and this mind. Also, we must do something in the world. We cannot just sit and meditate all the time.
If we do that we will be a burden on others.

AS: We must take care of the body by giving it food, shelter and clothing. This is necessary because the journey to the Self is only easy when the body is healthy. If a ship is not in need of repair, if it
is in good condition, we can easily use it to go on a journey.

But we should not forget the purpose for which we have been given this body. We should not get side-tracked by thinking too much about good health or worrying about other peoples problems.

Our purpose in life is to realize the Self. It is an easy matter to get a
little food and find somewhere congenial to live and meditate.
Once we have achieved this we should have no further interest in
the world and its problems.

"If you hurt others, if you do scandal-mongering, mischief-mongering, backbiting, talebearing, if you exploit others, if you acquire the property of others by foul means, if you do any action that can give pain to others, you will reap pain. You will get unfavourable circumstances or opportunities and environments. This is the law of thought and nature. Just as you can build your good or bad character by sublime or base thinking, so also you can shape your favourable or unfavourable circumstances by doing good or bad actions." - Swami Sivananda

Ramana Maharshi has selected forty-two verses from the Bhagavad Gita including Verse 23 from Chapter 16 which says "He who dismisses the laws of scripture and conducts himself according to impulses of desire, he neither attains success, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal".

The third of February 1936, early morning, saw my horse-cart rolling on the uneven two-and-a-half- mile road from Tiruvannamalai railway station to Ramanashram. I was led to a small dining room, at the door of which I was asked to remove my shoes. As I was trying to unlace them, my eyes fell on a pleasant looking middle-aged man inside the room, wearing nothing but a kaupina, with eyes as cool as moonbeams, sitting on the floor before a leaf-plate nearly emptied, and beckoning me with the gentlest of nods and the sweetest smile imaginable.

I was alone in the Hall with him. Joy and peace suffused my being - such a delightful feeling of purity and well-being at the mere proximity of a man, I never had before. My mind was already in deep contemplation of him - him not as flesh, although that was exquisitely formed and featured, but as an unsubstantial principle which could make itself so profoundly felt despite the handicap of a heavy material vehicle. When after a while I became aware of my environment, I saw him looking at me with large penetrating eyes, wreathed in smiles rendered divinely soothing by their child-like innocence.

All of a sudden I felt something fall in my lap and heard the jingling of keys - my keys! I looked up at the Maharshi extremely puzzled. The man - Sri Ramaswami Pillai - who had dropped them through the door behind me came in and explained that he had gone to the railway station on a bicycle and found the station master waiting for him. It appears that during the few minutes that the train had stopped at the station a passenger had providentially entered the very compartment I had vacated, and, seeing the keys on the seat, he picked them up, and, wonder of wonders! ran up to the station master and handed them over to him. The latter by an unusual flash of intuition surmised that the keys belonged to an Ashram visitor, whom he might have seen in the train in the morning, and awaited a claim for them. It was a series of miracles which occurred on my behalf in the short space of barely ninety minutes, of which I was blissfully ignorant, absorbed as I was in the entrancing personality of this magnificent human magnet - Sri Ramana Bhagavan. It is needless to say that from that day Ramanashram became my permanent home.
