The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Karma
« on: August 08, 2013, 11:11:42 PM »
What happens when the Prarabdha karma of two persons collides?
Like, one person's karma is to jet a certain job - but another person also has the karma to get this job?

From here:

*M:*  Their destiny is what happens. There is no thwarting of destiny. You mean to say everybody's life is totally determined at his birth? What a strange idea! Were it so, the power that determines would see to it that nobody should suffer.

So there seems a difference here in regard to the teachings about Karma.
Can someone explain this?

Shiva is the one who is worshipped by the Asuras as well.He Grants boons to asuras and Vishnu is required to tackle them later!

Is this not Devi's job?
She is a great demon fighter I read (Mahisasura, Bhandasura, Raktabija and so on).

General topics / Some questions about Hindu mythology
« on: August 08, 2013, 12:44:53 AM »
As I am not an Indian, Hindu mythology sometimes is confusing for me.
Two questions often come to my mind:
- Why do Shiva & Uma have children but Vishnu & Lakshmi have none?
- Why do Shiva & Uma have sons only, but no daughter?
Books about Hinduism I read often state that this reflects the preference for sons and the aversion for daughters in the Hindu society (because of dowry).

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Mantra

He has given an upadesa of a mantra to Ganapati Muni but that is a secret not known to anyone.   There is no record of
what mantra it is.
Supposedly he gave a Devi mantra.

From Padamalai, page 225:

Though Bhagavan rarely gave out mantras, when he did, he generally recommended 'Siva, Siva'.
Which other mantras did Bhagavan use, did he also give Shakti or Vishnu mantras when someone needed them?
Muruganar himself was given this mantra by Bhagavan, as were several other devotees including Annamalai Swami, the brother of Rangan (who was one of Bhagavan's childhood friends),
and an unkown harijan.
Did Bhagavan also give a mantra to Ganapati Muni?
He practised mantras, I believe.

I will post the name of the book when I am able to. I am pretty sure you will be able to order it thru the Ramanasramam book store.
Thank you in advance.
It might not be part of the Collected Works?

There is a book written by Kanakammal about Bhagavan's advice for women.  It is a translation of various verses to Goddess Durga. I think.  I don't remember the name of it but I borrowed it from Ramanasramam library.

As you enter the new library, Turn right, it is in the second row, in the first shelf from the right.
Dear Child of Arunachala,

Thank you very much for the description of the way to the book.
Regrettably I am in Europe (and an European without Indian roots by the way - I only choose Jyoti as my login because I know it means light) and I don't know if in this life I will be able to travel to India...

General Discussion / garlic & onions

Are garlic & onions saatvic, were they used in ashram kitchen?
I'm not sure, but I belive that Annamalai Swami ate onions when the weather was very hot to keep his body cool.
What about garlic?

Human Gospel has his full details on his visits and talks with Bhagawan and details further -

Thank you very much for the link.
This text contains information about Swami Madhava Tirtha, but I was asking about Madhava Swami who was one of Bhagavan's assistants and later presumably reincarnated as a white peacock.

I currently read Living by the words of Bhagavan which is a biography of Annamalai Swami.
There is some information about Madhava Swami and I was shocked to read that this man had been a misogynist and committed suicide.
What was the matter with him?

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / The Self & God
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:15:12 AM »
What is the relationship between the Self & God?
I currently read about Nisgaradatta Maharaj and he says that "God is the totality of consciousness but awareness is beyond all".
Is awareness the Self?
Than the Self and God are not the same?

The universe is sooo vast, and there may be other universes too.
It is therefore logical to assume that there are many planets with intelligent life out there.
But I don't think the people there are so different from us - they perhaps have a more advanced technology, but otherwise they identify with their bodies as much as we do.

Can you tell me a bit about Bhagavan's female family members?
I know about his mother, but nothing about his sister.
Did she ever visit Ramana Ashram?

Once one lady came alone to stay at the ashramam to escape torture from her family members. When her stay became longer, Bhagawan became scared and said to Chinnaswamy, " People may think that Swamy (Bhagawan) has kept her for himself, so send her away".
Did he find for her another place to stay?
Did he help her with her troubles?
