Verse 49:

In praise of Saint Sundarar
The munificent Lord who is unknown to
Brahma throaned on lotus, and Vishnu,
Claimed him for the redemption of the world
At Vennainalloor hailed by many, by means
Of an ancient document; I invoke his feet
And wear them on my crown;
My servitude to his feet is my suzerainty.

மீது கொண்டெழு விமானம தாகிமேற் செல்லக்
கோதி லன்பரும் குடும்பமும் குறைவறக் கொடுத்த

By the grace of Grace, the great scale itself
Turned into a car and flew up.
The flawless devotee and his family
Were translated to Siva-Loka to be with the Primal God
Who blessed them with bliss unending.

Unto the devotee who stood in the pan

As the celestial beings rained flowers, the Brhamin
That blazed with the triple stripes of the Holy Ash
Vanished somehow into the heavens.
Resuming His usual form which has beginning none,
The Deity of Tirunalloor -- first among cities --,
Manifested Himself as Ammai-Appar.

Men on earth hailed the devotee of clarified intellect;
Struck with wonderment which swept everywhere
They adored him; the celestial beings rained in joy
Karpaka flowers which mantled the bright sky.

In spiraling love, when they ascended the pan,
As the kovanam worn on the waist of the God of gods
And the servitude of them -- the Lord?s devotees
Whose love for Him knows no diminution, were equal,
The pans weighed equal, and level stood the beam.

"May the pans of the scale stand even, if it be true
That we haven't swerved from the truthful servitude

Rain-filled tanks and gardens galore.
He chanted the Panchakshara and the pan ascended.

When thus, in fear, the devotee of flawless servitude

To free them from their bondage; He gave them
Leave to ascend the pan and gain ascension.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: February 08, 2016, 06:11:26 AM »

After the visit with Ganapati Sastri, I went again to see the Master in the Cave.  The Master
smiled at me and asked one most private question about my life.  I immediately understood
that with His very look, He would read anyone like an open book!

He then gave me some fruits, cooked rice and ghee.  He also gave me a spoon-like implement
made out of coconut shell!  He then gave me some milk out of desiccated coconut.  As I was eating,
He described me very important details of my past life.  He has seen hundreds of people in His life.
But I understood that with His Wisdom-insight, He reads every one like an encyclopedia.

I sat with Him for over three hours and He talked to me many many things.

I realized that He is a complete Master of Wisdom.

Surrender - Conscious Powerlessness:

Every day it seems we come across more and more people addicted to various activities or things.
It could be that someone wants to control various activities by weight loss, weight gain or by other
cosmetic means. Perhaps because of modern technology, the most recent addictions are more openly
displayed. It could be someone's apparent need to always be on the phone, to constantly use a computer
or to play computer games, to have more virtual friends or to gamble. Some addictions are so commonplace
that they are acceptable to the point that in many cases it is now politically incorrect to even mention them.
Modern society has expanded the range of addictions so much they could include a whole gamut of human
behavior.  Let's alphabetize only the most common ones: anorexia, alcohol, bulimia, body building, cocaine,
chocolate, crime, drugs not prescribed but available on the street such as glue, inhalants, solvents and
legal highs, exercise, food, fetishes, gambling, heroin, internet, jogging, kleptomania, love, marijuana,
nicotine,  overeating, pornography, prescription drugs, quintessential behavior (perfectionism), religion,
social media, shopping, sex, self harm, telephones, television, tattooing, underachieving, video games,
wealth.

General Discussion / Re: The Heart of Vedanta - John Grimes:
« on: February 07, 2016, 11:19:08 AM »
The essence of Adviata is simple to state, 'You are That, here and now.' To the person who objects:
'But is not my search proof of my having become lost?'  The reply is, 'No, it only shows that you
believe you are lost. For, what are you in search of?  How can you find that which you already are.?'
Or, to put it another way, 'And seeking is a denial of the presence of that which is sought.'  To paraphrase
Sankara, 'Why are you looking for the Self or God in city after city, temple after temple?  God dwells
in the heart within.  Why look in the east and west?  Don't look for the Guru.  God dwells within you,
in truth, you are God.  You don't need to find God, you need to find a  Guru who will guide you to yourself.'

Throughout the history, individuals have found themselves tossed between the banks of pleasure and pain,
gain and loss.  They are seemingly alienated from themselves, alienated from others, and alienated from
the Absolute. From such a perspective it makes sense to ask how it is possible for a finite, relative,
mortal human being to be identical with an immortal Absolute?

Owing partly to this personal reference and partly to his metaphysical ignorance and consequent
unpreparedness, he enters into the state of contemplative self absorption like a man walking backward
through an open door into a room, keeping his eyes stubbornly fixed on the familiar place he has started
from and refusing to look where he is going.  Just as this man will only half know where he is even when
he inside the room, so will the mystic be only half aware of the nature of Pure Mind even when he is
immersed in self absorption.

Moreover, this personal reference causes his preconceived views and dogmatic beliefs merely to be left
temporarily at the threshold of Mind, as it were, and not to be held in its purifying flame.  Hence they
are picked up again when he emerges once more from the experience. If however meditation is practiced
jointly with the philosophic training, that is, if it no longer remains a merely mystical exercise only but
is informed by rational reflective knowledge, then the erroneous view of reality can never revive again
because the pure being will be experienced AS IT IS.

The afternoons when most people were resting was when the still air rang to the music of the stone masons
chip, chip, chipping at the enormous stones that were to become the Mother's Temple.  The front of the
Asramam which is now a sort of motorcycle park was, at that time full of all the huge stones.  All day the
work went on but it was quiet of the afternoons that one could really hear it the most and at that time,
the sound carried far in the hot silence. We three children offered to help with the effort, but for some
reason, the maestris (masons) were not keen, in fact they took to hiding their tools to discourage us from
helpful hammering efforts.  They attacked a pillar with blunt nosed chisels wit increasingly smaller
heads, and the stones became smoother and smoother. Actually the four black pillars at the corners of
Bhagavan's  Samadhi were done the same way until they were smooth as silk, and then they were oiled
and made to look like marble. But the stones for the temple were worked to a less fine finish.  Their
chipping was a lovely soporific sound but did not have quite that effect on the three lively children who
could escape parental watchfulness for a while.  We climbed up the scaffolding over the Mother's
Temple and in under the coconut matting protection where they were not actually working we helped
to build the dome. WE 'improved' a number of statues, as I remember. Yes, our finger points are
definitely there for all time.
