Verse 43:

When he eyed the king who drew out
His bright sword dazzling like wild fire,
He cried thus: "Woe's me! I have now witnessed
The boundlessness of the king"s love,
The sovereign of infinite glory."
He would not receive the sword; but he knew
That the king would kill himself, if he did not;
So to avert that mishap, he received it in fear.

"This would not suffice for the blasphemy committed;
The Lord and His devotees had been wronged;
I too must be killed; neither should you
Kill me with your auspicious battle-axe;
This is fit for the deed." Thus spake he
Who solicited expiation, and drew out
His sword and handed it over to him.

"When the tusker committed the evil
Its controllers, and mahouts riding on its back,
Would not prevent it; so with their dear lives
They paid for their fault; this is all that
Happened here." When thus he spake, the king
Whose shoulders are mighty as a mountain,
Stricken with fear, fell at his feet and duly hailed him.

The servitor of the God of gods addressed the king thus:

From Sivakami Andar who gathered them
To deck the Lord whose jewels are serpents,
And spilled them; so I smote it down."

The king bade them that neared him move away;
He walked toward the devotee bowing, and said:
"I did not know of this; I heard there
A different version; be that as it may.
For the fault of the tusker, the tusker
And its mahouts have been killed.
Will this suffice? Be pleased to grace me."
Thus he spake and remained standing.

Who stands with the axe." Thus they spake bowing.

And thundered thus! "Who indeed is the conqueror?"

In great speed he reached the place
Where lay the tusker and mahouts, all dead.
He didn't eye there any one hostile,
But only a devotee with a dazzling battle-axe
With a pair of long arms, trunk-like,
Standing thither like a destructive tusker.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:24:34 AM »

Bhagavan Ramana helped Ranga Iyer (Rangan) in many ways to get over his difficulties.
It is all Guru's Grace, that worked miracles in Rangan's life.  He also did that for
Jagadeeswara Sastri, who suffered from colon cancer and was nearing death in Tiruvannamalai
hospital.  When doctors asked Bhagavan Ramana how to proceed further, He merely told them
to continue a particular medicine.  Jagadeeswara Sastri got cured and came back to the Hall soon.
He was present when Kapali Sastri was reading Ramana Gita Prakasa in the presence of
Bhagavan Ramana.  Kapali Sastri became speechless seeing his survival, even though Sastri
looked very weak and thin, he was alive and kicking and lived a few more years.  He did with the
young boy Ramanan, when the latter was bitten by a snake and was black and blue nearing death.
Bhagavan Ramana touched him and he got well.

But Bhagavan Ramana did not want to do such miracles at the drop of His hat.  He did occasionally.
He once told that if He started raising the dead or near-dead people everyday, then the Asramam
would be filled with corpses!  That was not His mission!

All scriptures without any exception proclaim that for attaining Salvation,
the mind should be subdued; and once one knows that control of the mind
is their final aim, it is futile to make an interminable study of them.

The mystical exercise in which he engages himself is not a blind one.  He overcomes the world idea by
absorbing it.  He utilizes the reason to go beyond reason but he does not dismiss it prematurely, He
not only discovers pure Thought but also meditates reflectively upon his own discovery.  When he empties
out the contents of consciousness he does so with open eyes, holding steadily to the understanding that
they are the froth and foam thrown up by reality and not essentially different from it.

After the vacuum is filled by the presence of pure Thought, he returns to them with less and less sense
of having to cross an abyss of difference,  with the consequence that he has less and less difficulty in
bringing them into relation, continuity , and harmony with his previous meditation experience. He trains
himself to bring this reflective attention directly into his everyday active existence and to insert it
continuously into whatever thoughts may engage his awareness and whatever deeds may engage his body.
He disciplines his consciousness to hold the body thought without identifying itself with it, to function
through the five senses without ceasing to function in the infinite  Mind.

As he continues to unite metaphysical reflection with mystical contemplation there suddenly arises within
him out of their fusion a new faculty which has neither the limitations of reasoning intellect nor the one-
sidedness  of mystical emotion but is actually superior to both. This mysterious state of consciousness is called
in Sanskrit 'that which is all-full', a reference to its completeness and finality.  It yields enlightenment beyond
that of ordinary yoga.

General Discussion / Re: Communication and Attention - Vidya Sridhar:
« on: February 11, 2016, 11:49:26 AM »
They use the computer to listen to stories or rhymes, read books and even do homework. In earlier days,
the grandparents told stories from mythology and from the epics Ramayana and Mahabhrata to their
grandchildren and sang songs and rhymes. Other than the parents, the children also had attention of
grandparents and other family members in a joint family system, elders were also taken care of by their
younger generation in their own home. Nowadays people put their parents in a home and pay for them
to be taken care of. Children are being sent away to day care centers at a  very young age where they are
looked after by someone  other than the mother or father. Parents have hardly any time to listen to
their children, understand their problems and offer solutions.

What is lacking in the current forms of communication, is the very essence of communication, which is
attention. One may listen to people talking on the radio, TV, or internet, but cam we say that the speaker
is talking to us directly and paying attention to the listener or does the listener have their full attention on
them?

General topics / Re: Lessons from the Brahma-Vishnu Tussle: S. Raman.
« on: February 11, 2016, 10:19:22 AM »
Meanwhile during the flight upwards, Brahma saw a cactus flower (thazhambu) floating down from
the above, and invited it to be a witness as to having sighted the top of the column, after convincing it
with the argument that 'if something comes from above, there is a top and it had been seen.' When
Brahma went down along with the flower, Maheswara realized the trick being played by Brahma and
cursed him, saying that he would never be worthy of worship and there would therefore be no temples
dedicated to him.  It was also ordained that, for having been a false witness, the 'thazhambu' would
be prohibited from use in Siva pujas.  Thus both the gods were shown that they were not the mightiest.
The column of light had appeared on a Arudhra darshan day (usually the day ahead of Ramana Jayanti
day), and cooled itself down in the form of a Hill on a Mahasivaratri day.  The cooling down was in response
to the earnest pleadings by all the devas led by Vishnu as no one could stand the heat and light of the column,
which was at its peak especially after the trick played by Brahma.  This event is depicted in all Siva temples,
in the form of Lingodhbhavar, installed on the peripheral pradakshina route directly secure to the wall
behind the temple of main idol of Siva in a temple complex. Also, that is the main deity traditionally
worshipped on the night of the annual Maha Sivaratri day
