8.  The Lord Umapati, consort of Uma, alone is the cause of the universe; the illuminator of the insentient
world and the sole cause of joy.  For that great Lord Isvara, thee is no action or the need of instrument
in shaping the worlds. He, the destroyer (Hara) Himself is the cause of that.

9.  The immovable 'Sthanu' Mahesvara in His Campaign against the Tripurasuras - the demons called
'The Triad'  -- is equipped thus: Vishnu is the arrow, the Mount Meru which supports the earth is the bow;
Vishnu's son Brahma is the charioteer; the Vedas which are the emanations from that charioteer's
(Brahma) face are the horses.  The sun and the moon which are the two eyes of the Rathi -- the one
who is seated in the chariot, Siva -  are the two chariot wheels.  That rathi, the seated one, is the One
to be known by the  'end' of the Vedas (Vedanta - Upanishads) which became the horses, the bearers
of the vehicle.  Serpent Vasuki. the Lord's crown band is the bow string.  The targets of the weapon
are the Tripuras, traversing the space i.e triads having no firm ground.

May the dust of that Sthanu, the immovable great Lord protect us.

10. Then, Ribhu addressing Nidagha, said thus:  I shall give you the exegesis of the the Self -
not found in the three periods of time.

284.  The Sages (Buddhas) call that the State of Right Awareness, in which there is neither knowledge
nor ignorance.  That is the Highest State, wherein there is nothing other than the Self, whether
sentient or insentient.

285.  The illiterate, the literate and the 'Knower of the Self'  are all three equally ignorant.  The third one
also is ignorant, because for him there is nothing knowable, other than the Self.

286. That One, who has become established in his own Natural State, is adorable by all, whether men
or angels.  As he is not distinct from the Supreme Being, he is also fit to be adored as God, by the seekers
of Deliverance.

287. Not knowing that this worldly knowledge is only ignorance, some ask:  'Let ignorance come to an
end in the Supreme State, but why should knowledge also cease?' 

288.  In the Supreme state there is nothing to be known, neither a knower, nor knowledge of objects.
Just as pairs of opposites are absent in that State, so the triads, are also absent.

289.  In the Supreme State that Self shines alone, free from both knowledge and ignorance.  Since
He is there as Pure Consciousness, without change, how can that State be a void?

Verse 127:


அருமையாற் புறம்பு போந்து
    வணங்கிஅங் கமரும் நாளில்
திருமுல்லை வாயில் எய்திச்
    செழுந்தமிழ் மாலை சாத்தி
மருவிய பதிகள் மற்றும்
    வணங்குவார் மறையோர் ஏத்தத்
தருமலி புகலி வந்து
    ஞானசம் பந்தர் சார்ந்தார்.



With great reluctance he moved out of the temple;
While he sojourned there adoring the Lord
He visited Tirumullaivaayil and decked its Lord
With his garland of goodly Tamizh verse.
He left the place and adored at other shrines;
Hailed by the Brahmins, Jnaanasambandhar
Then came back to Pukali.

Verse  126:


மெய்ப்பொரு ளாயி னாரை
    வெண்காடு மேவி னாரைச்
செப்பரும் பதிக மாலை
    கண்காட்டு நுதன்முன் சேர்த்தி
முப்புரம் செற்றார் பாதம்
    சேரும்முக் குளமும் பாடி
ஒப்பரும் ஞானம் உண்டார்
    உளமகிழந் தேத்தி வாழ்ந்தார்.   


With a joyous heart, he that was fed on peerless Gnosis
Hailed the Lord of Venkaadu, the True Ens,
In an ineffable garland of verse beginning thus:
"Kann kaattu nuthal?"*
He also sang of the triple tanks of the Lord
Who destroyed the triple fortresses of the demons.

    முதல்வர்கோ புரத்து முன்னர்ச்
சித்தநீ டுவகை யோடும்
    சென்றுதாழ்ந் தெழுந்து புக்குப்
பத்தராம் அடியார் சூழப்
    பரமர்கோ யிலைச்சூழ் வந்து
நித்தனார் தம்முன் பெய்தி
    நிலமுறத் தொழுது வீழ்ந்தார்.


The Adept of the triple Tamizh, with a mind full of joy,
Went before the First One?s tower and bowed low:
Up he rose and went round the Lord?s shrine
In the holy company of the servitors;
Then he came to the presence of the Everlasting
And prostrated on the floor in adoration.

    எனவொணா மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்க
மன்னுசீர்ச் சண்பை யாளும்
    மன்னரைக் கொண்டு புக்கார்.


The devotees at Tiruvenkaadu of Lord Siva
Who is decked with Konrai blooms of golden petals,
Agni, Ganga and the young crescent
Came before the Prince of Sanbai of everlasting fame;
Their overflowing love transformed them into a state
Which they themselves could not know;
They took him with them to their town.

சீரினில் திகழ்ந்த பாடல்
    திருக்கடைக் காப்புப் போற்றிப்
பாரினில் பொலிந்த தொண்டர்
    போற்றிடப் பயில்வார் பின்னும்
ஏரிசைப் பதிகம் பாடி
    ஏத்திப்போந் திறைவர் வெண்கா
டாருமெய்க் காத லோடும்
    பணிவதற் கணைந்தா ரன்றே.   


He sealed his glorious decade with his hymn
Of benediction and stood praying;
Again, he, the cynosure and object of praise
Of all the glorious servitors on earth,
Sang a decade of beauty married to melody,
And prayed again;
Impelled by true love he fared forth at once
To adore the Lord of Venkaadu.

வானள வுயர்ந்த வாயில்
    உள்வலங் கொண்டு புக்குத்
தேனலர் கொன்றை யார்தம்
    திருமுன்பு சென்று தாழ்ந்து
மானிடந் திரித்தார் தம்மைப்
    போற்றுவார் மண்பு கார்என்
றூனெலாம் உருக ஏத்தி
    உச்சிமேற் குவித்தார் செங்கை.


Passing through the sky-high entrance,
He completed his sacred circumambulation;
Then he came to the presence of the Lord who wears
The honey-laden Konrai blooms and sports the fawn
On His left hand, he bowed low and hailed Him
In a decade that would melt all flesh, thus:
"Maan pukaar Vaan Pukuvar?"
As he hymned, he kept his roseate hands
Folded above his head.

    புனிதர்தம் திருச்சாய்க் காட்டு
மன்னுசீர்த்தொண்ட ரெல்லாம்
    மகிழ்ந்தெதிர் கொள்ளப் புக்கார்.   



At Pallavaneeccharam, bowing low his head,
He adored the Lord decked with serpents
And hailed him in redeeming numbers.
Greeted by the devotees of ever-during renown
He adored the Holy One of Tirucchaaikkaadu
Near Pukar circled by the Kaveri.

கறையணி கண்டர் கோயில்
    காதலால் பணிந்து பாடி
மறையவர் போற்ற வந்து
    திருவலம் புரத்து மன்னும்
இறைவரைத் தொழுது பாடும்
    கொடியுடை ஏத்திப் போந்து
நிறைபுனல் திருச்சாய்க் காடு
    தொழுதற்கு நினைந்து செல்வார்.   


In loving devotion he adored and hymned
The Lord whose throat holds the poison,
And came out hailed by the Brahmins;
Then at Tiruvalampuram he hailed the Lord
With a decade beginning thus: "Kodiyudai..."
As he moved out of the temple he desired
To adore the Lord of Tirucchaaikkaadu
And fared forth thitherward.

திருமறை யோர்கள் சூழ்ந்து
    சிந்தையின் மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்கப்
பெருமறை ஓசை மல்கப்
    பெருந்திருக் கோயில் எய்தி
அருமறைப் பொருளா னாரைப்
    பணிந்தணி நற்சங் கத்தில்
தருமுறை நெறியக் கோயில்
    சார்ந்தமை அருளிச் செய்தார்.


Holy men well-versed in the Vedas fore-gathered
Surrounding him; each, in delight great
Recited the Vedas the sound of which spiraled up;
It was thus he reached the great and sacred shrine
And adored Him-- the import of the rare Vedas;
Then he hymned a divine decade celebrating
The Lord enshrined in the temple, built
In the shape of a beauteous Valampuri shell.

Verse 118:


காவணம் எங்கும் இட்டுக்
    கமுகொடு கதலி நாட்டிப்
பூவணத் தாமந் தூக்கிப்
    பூரண கும்ப மேந்தி
ஆவண வீதி எல்லாம்
    அலங்கரித் தண்ண லாரை
மாவண மலர்மென் சோலை
    வளம்பதி கொண்டு புக்கார்.



Festoons were put up; areca leaves and severed
Plantain trees were fastened to thresholds;
Garlands were dangled; vessels filled with holy water
Were carried; the bazaar streets were decorated.
They received the great one in such splendor
To their town of foison teeming with flower gardens,
The haunt of bees and beetles.

Dr. M.H. Syed writes:

What does the modern science say?  In his book, The Limitations of Science, J.W.N. Sullivan says:
There is also the hypothesis held by a few distinguished scientists that life as old as matter,
and in that sense, has had no origin."  Further, the same author says in his Bases of Modern Science:
"It is quite possible that the actual substance of the Universe, is mental, that the stuff of events
is similar percepts.  The fact that a piece of matter has been reduced by the theory of relativity to
a system of events, that it is no longer regarding as the enduring stuff of the world, makes
the hypothesis that the "physical" and the "mental" are essentially similar, very possible."
In this respect, the words of the Maharshi are crystal clear.  In Who am I?, He says:

"Nor is there any such thing as the physical world apart from and independent of thought...
Just as the spider draws out the thread of the cobweb from within itself and withdrawn it again
onto itself, the mind projects the world and absorbs it back into itself." 

That is the metaphysical basis of Bhagavan Ramana's philosophy, which we see is quite in harmony
with the trend of modern scientific thought.  Bow how does He solve the moral problem of good and
evil?  Does He simply etherealize all evil and deny the problem?  No.  The real Master that He is,
the Maharshi you:  "All the evil lies in you in the form of the ego.  Endeavor first to eradicate it,
instead of probing into the evil you see in others.  As you are, so is the world."  It is a hard percept
to practice, hard, indeed, even to accept, unless you have the purity of heart, and understanding,
without which, however, no spiritual endeavor is at all possible.  In a few lines, the Sage tells you
the attitude that you should adopt towards the external world, in which, in fact, is not external to
your mind.  In Who am I?, He says:

"There are no two minds, one good and the other evil.  It is only the vasanas or tendencies of the
mind that are of two kinds, good and favorable, evil and unfavorable.  When associated with the latter,
it is called evil-mind.  However evil-minded others may appear to you, it is not proper to hate and
despise them.  Likes and dislikes, love and hatred -- are equally to be eschewed.  It is also not proper
to let the mind often rest on objects and affairs of mundane life.  As far as possible, one should not
interfere in the affairs of others.  Everything offered to others is really an offering to oneself.  And
if only this truth is realized, who is there that could refuse anything to others?"

The Sage abides in the transcendent state of mindlessness.  He is a trigunatita.  For a description
of this transcendental state of Absolute Being, untouched by good and evil, I cannot do better
than quote the learned words of Dr. Bhagavan Das (Science of Peace):  "The knower of Brahman
knows that there is no ruthless cruelty, no nightmarish agony of helplessness in it, for, at every
moment, each condition is essentially voluntary, the product of the utterly free will of the Self
(and therefore of all selves), which there is none else to bend and curb in any way, the will that
is truly liberated from all bondage. 

He knows, He cognizes Brahman.  And looking on all selves as Himself, desiring their happiness
as He labors for His own, He realizes and is Brahman.  Such a one is truly Mukta, free from all
fearful bonds of doubt.  He knows He is Absolute, the Self absolved from all the limitations of
the non-self.  To Him belongs the everlasting Peace!

Today is the liberation day of Nami Nandi Adigal.  I have given the full history of Nami Nandi Adigal
in my serial post on 63 Saiva Devotees. Please see that for full information about Nami Nani Adigal.
The star on the day of liberation was Vaikasi -Puram nakshatra.

Today is also the liberation day Sekkizhar, the author of Periya Puranam and also Nambi Andar Nambi,
who was one of the pioneers for giving the 63 Nayanamars stories.

Chapter 4:

1. Skanda:

Once Ribhu was devotee of Sambhu, who was the best among sages and desire-less, was staying
at the Himalyan Peak of Kedara. Wearing the sacred Rudraksha garlands and holy ashes he was
engaged in the worship of the Lord Kedaresvara.  The Munis asked him thus: 

2,3. Munis: O great one, son of the lotus born  (Brahma).  You have obtained wisdom of the Vedas
in the form of Sutras (aphorisms) by worshipping Isana, the Lord of gods on the Kailasa Mountain.
Kindly impart the same to us for our liberation, and enable to cross the ocean of samsara, the
wheel of existence.

4. Suta:

Ribhu considered the words of the noble Munis with pleasure and addressed them, who were
established in the contemplation of the feet of the Lord dwelling in His eight fold form.


5. Ribhu:

O great souls devoted to Sambhu, there is nothing secret to withhold from from you.  Looking at you
from the mansion of love of the three eyed Lord I shall relate the same to you.

6,7. The aphoristic knowledge of Sankara is a great emanation from the crown of the Vedas.  O best
among seekers of the knowledge of Brahman!  Hearken to this spring  of wisdom arising from Siva
which enables one to cross over samsara by conquering the senses through devotion to Siva.
Saluting the great God Mahadeva,  I shall expound the knowledge pertaining to Siva.
