Kediliappa and Gajavalli were an ideal couple residing in Vedaranyam, a town in the Nagapattinam district
of Tamizh Nadu.  They were united not only by love towards each other but also by their devotion towards
Lord Thayumanavar.  They both aimed at a single goal in life;  to embrace the Lotus Feet of Lord
Siva.  Entrusted with the responsibility of managing the local temple, Kediliappa did his duties sincerely,
without expecting any reward and found happiness in his work.  Having heard about his good qualities,
King Vijaya Rao Chokkanatha offered him the position of a Minister.

Though his new work at Trisirapuram, the seat of royal power changed Kedilappa's routine, it did not   
make any difference to his devotion to Lord Thayumanavar, the presiding deity of Rock Fort temple
at Tiruchirapalli. Days passed  by. Sometime in the year 1705, a boy child of exuberant charm was
born to them. Being the ardent devotees of Lord Thayumanavar and they gave him the Lord's name.

56.  There is no happiness apart from the Self.  There is not a whit apart from the Self.  There is
no refuge other than the Self. Remain in the Self always.

57. There is nothing anywhere apart from the Self.  Not blade of grass is apart from the Self.
There is no even an iota other than the Self.  Nowhere there is anything apart from the Self.

58.  This exposition of the Bliss of the Self is explained to you by me.  The wise one who hears
this, oneself becomes Brahman.

59. Hearing this alone is capable of imparting instantaneous emancipation.  By grasping the meaning
of the text, one is freed from all limitations.

60.  Suta:  Worship with a disciplined heart the great Lord Mahasa who is the perfect, the true and the one
devoid of interstices.  Such a one becomes here in this world eternal, without agitation, of the form
of Brahman and the Self established.  The knot of the heart cut asunder, he shines within and rests
inwardly.  As the world becomes dead to him, he becomes one with the auspicious and  blemishless
feet   of Isvara.

The chapter fourteen, a dialogue between Ribhu and Nidagha entitled, 'The description of the topic
called the Bliss of the Self'  in the sixth amsa called Sankara in Sri Siva Rahasyam.

ஒருமை உய்த்தநல் லுணர்வி
அருமை யால்பெறும் மகள்என்பு
நிறைத்தஅக் குடத்தைப்
பெரும யானத்து நடம்புரி
வார்பெருங் கோயில்
திரும திற்புற வாய்தலில்
கொணர்கென்று செப்ப.

He addressed him thus: "O you of goodly
And integrated consciousness! As men on earth
Witness, may you fetch the urn filled, of yore,
With the remains of your daughter who was born
To you by reason of your rare askesis,
To the outer entrance of the fort-like wall
Of the great temple of the Lord that dances
In the Great Crematorium.

போற்றி மெய்யருள் திறம்பெறு
    பரிவுடன் வணங்கி
நீற்றின் மேனியில் நிறைமயிர்ப்
    புளகங்கள் நெருங்கக்
கூற்ற டர்த்தவர் கோயிலின்
    புறம்புபோந் தருளி
ஆற்றும் இன்னருள் வணிகர்மேற்
    செலவருள் செய்வார்.

He hailed the Lord and worshipped Him
With the ever-constant thought of getting blessed
With His true grace; the hair on his thrilled body
Resplendent with the holy ash, stood erect;
He moved out of the temple of the Lord who kicked
Death to death; resolved to confer sweet
And redemptive grace on the merchant.

தேவ தேவனைத் திருக்கபா
    லீச்சரத் தமுதைப்
பாவை பாகனைப் பரிவுறு
    பண்பினால் பரவி
மேவு காதலின் விரும்பிய
    விரைவினால் விழுந்து
நாவின் வாய்மையால் போற்றினார்
    ஞானசம் பந்தர்.

In loving devotion which is his second nature
He adored the Lord of gods-- the Nectar
Of Tirukkapaaleeccharam, the Partner of Uma--;
Impelled by love, in all celerity, he prostrated
Before Him and with his sacred lips, ever poised
In Truth, Tiru Jnaana Sambandhar hailed the Lord.

கங்கை வார்சடை யார்கபா
    லீச்சரத் தணைந்து
துங்க நீள்சுடர்க் கோபுரம்
    தொழுதுபுக் கருளி
மங்கை பாகர்தம் கோயிலை
    வலங்கொண்டு வணங்கிச்
செங்கை சென்னிமேல் குவிந்திடத்
    திருமுன்பு சேர்ந்தார்.

He reached Kapaaleeccharam of the Lord
Of long matted hair where courses the Ganga;
He adored its immense, tall, lustrous and beauteous tower,
Circumambulated the shrine of the Lord concorporate
With His Consort, and with his hands folded above
His head, he came before the presence of the Lord.

    புறத்துறை அழிய

The godly child embosomed the happenings
Pertaining to the servitor; for the fulfillment
Of the wish of Sivanesar who rejoiced in his mind,
He cast on him gladly and graciously, the very great
And merciful look which quelled Jainism and Buddhism
Which were at once false and alien.

The Prince of Kaazhi descended from his
Lustrous and beauteous litter;
He paid obeisance to the countless devotees,
And in grace came before them.
Listening to the narration by the great
And blessed tapaswins, of the servitorship
Of the merchant, he reached the divine city
Of Mayilaapuri situate on the sea-beach

The great merchant of peerless munificence
And the devotees, beholding at a great distance
The tapaswns-throng radiant with the holy ash,
Impelled by unending joy prostrated
On the ground saying, "The holy son
Of the river-crested Lord is come!"

    லாபுரி நோக்கித்
தூய தொண்டர்தம் குழாத்தொடும்
    எதிர்வந்து தோன்ற.

While so, the lord of Pukali-- the Master of
The rare Vedas--, having adored and taken leave
Of the Lord of Otriyoor, left that great town;
Surrounded by holy servitors he proceeded
Towards Mayilaapuri whose beach is rich in salt-pans.

    புனைவனென் றெழுவார்
அந்ந கர்ப்பெருந் தொண்டரும்
    உடன்செல வணைந்தார்.

Having thus decorated the city and having given
Due orders to the servants, who would, by all means,
Carry them out flawlessly, he rose up, resolved thus:
"To Otriyoor will I fare forth, first to adore
The golden feet of the adept of the threefold Tamizh
And wear them on my crown." Then with the great devotees
Of that city, he marched on.

மகர தோரணம் வண்குலைக்
    கமுகொடு கதலி
நிகரில் பல்கொடித் தாமங்கள்
    அணிபெற நிரைத்து
நகர நீள்மறுகு யாவையும்
    நலம்புனை அணியால்
புகரில் பொன்னுல கிழிந்ததாம்
    எனப்பொலி வித்தார்.

He had makara-toranas, beautiful bunches of areca-nuts
And severed banana-trees, peerless streamers
And garlands arranged in beauteous rows
And thus had the whole city with its long streets
Beautified with auspicious decorations;
It looked as though, the flawless, ethereal city itself
Had come down to the earth.

Among various human relations, the most intimate, sacred and deep rooted is the one with the mother.
While all other relations are characterized by an element of mutual expectation, the relationship with
mother is based on pure love and devoid of any expectation.  There is no parallel anywhere to the profundities
of mother's love.  Mother's love is limitless, sublime, unconditional, magnanimous and well enduring.
No words can give adequate expression to the overwhelming flow of love that springs from the heart of a mother. Her son or daughter would have risen high as a towering spiritual leader or as a universal Guru but that makes no difference for the free flow of love between the mother and daughter or son.  It is a divine
relation that cuts through all barriers.  It is unique and no other love can equal it, not even that of God.
Perhaps, that was why God Siva himself manifested as a mother to a daughter.  It is said that Lord
Siva cannot physically be present in a perceivable form 'as Himself' whenever and whatever His devotees
look for Him and that is the reason He manifested as a human mother to bestow His love and care to all
His devotees at all times. Because Lord Siva manifested as a mother, to take care of a pregnant daughter,
He came to be known as Thayumanavar or Mathrubuteswar (the Lord who became the Mother).  The legend
of Thayumana Swamy is a moving illustration of the motherly love and compassion bestowed by Lord
Siva on His devotees.

(This is according to the legend Ratnavati, a great female devotee of Lord Siva, who was pregnant
and as was customary, she returned to her mother's house situated north of Kaveri River for delivery.
One day, while her mother had gone to Tiruchirapalli, across the river, Ratnavati felt her labor
pains.  Alone at home she cried for help.  Soon her mother came and attended to her delivery. Actually
her real mother was stuck across due to the flood.  When the flood receded, she returned home and saw
the happy face of Ratnavati with her baby.  Pleasantly surprised, she asked her daughter who had helped
her for the delivery, 'You yourself came and helped!', said the daughter who had helped her in delivery,
'You yourself came and helped!', said the daughter.  But her mother said,  'I have only just returned!'
It then dawned on them that Lord Siva Himself had incarnated as her mother  (Thayum Anavar).
For Lord Siva, who has manifested in different forms at different times, perhaps this incarnation as
a mother truly reflects His divine qualities of love and compassion.  Lord Thayumanavar, continues to bless
His devotees from the Rock Fort Matrubhuteswarar temple complex constructed in the 6th century
at Tiruchirapalli.)

துன்பமே பிறப்பே இறப்பொடு மயக்காந்

O Lord-God !
By causing every pore of hair sublimely supple,
