Verse  4:

பாளைவிரி மணங்கமழும்
   பைங்காய்வன் குலைத்தெங்கின்
தாளதிர மிசைமுட்டித்
    தடங்கிடங்கின் எழப்பாய்ந்த
வாளைபுதை யச்சொரிந்த

நீளமுதிர் கனிகிழிதேன்
    நீத்தத்தில் எழுந்துகளும்.

Valais which leap from the depths of water,
Hit the trunks of coco-palms rich in fragrant spathes
And strong bunches of green coconuts; the trees wave
And shed their ripe coconuts which get buried (in the mire)
With the fish that attacked them;
Jack-fruit burst and with honey inundate them;
Then float the coconuts and the retrieved fish play about.

நனைமருவும் சினைபொதுளி
   நறுவிரைசூழ் செறிதளிரில்
தினகரமண் டலம்வருடும்
    செழுந்தருவின் குலம்பெருகிக்
கனமருவி அசைந்தலையக்

The branches of trees rich in buds and fragrant shoots
Wave on high as if touching the Surya-mandala;
Such is the growth of the dense trees cloud-capped;
The nimbi move and bees wheel their flights;
So in those flower gardens, it for ever pours,
Now a shower of rain; anon a shower of honey.

In that town glows the great luster of the holy ash;
In its ridged fields rich in sweet-cane-juice
When ploughing is done with buffaloes, finned Varals
Leap aloft; crabs that thrive in mire slowly move out
Through the furrows and ascend the lotuses thither to litter;
Witnessing this, lotuses spill their fragrant pollen.

Talk No. 238 is briefly as under:

In answer to some question, Bhagavan Ramana said: "There is a state when words cease and silence
prevails."

Devotee:  How to communicate thought to each other?

Bhagavan:  That is only when there is notion of two!

Devotee:  How to get peace?

Bhagavan:  That is the natural state.  The mind obstructs the innate peace.  Our investigation is
only in the mind.  Investigate the mind; it will disappear.  There is no enmity by name mind.
Because of the emergence of thoughts, we surmise something from which they start.  That we
term mind.  When we probe to see what it is, there is nothing like it.  After it has vanished,
Peace will be found to remain eternal.
............
............
............

Devotee: Emerson says:  "Soul answers soul by itself --- not by description of words.

Bhagavan:  Quite so.  However much you learn, there will be no bounds to knowledge.  You ignore
the doubter but try to solve the doubts.  On the other hand, hold on to the doubter and doubts will
disappear.

Devotee:  Then the question resolves itself to knowing the Self.

Bhagavan:  Quite so.

Talks No. 240 reads as under:  [abridged]

Devotee:  The world is materialistic.  What is the remedy for it?

Bhagavan:  Materialistic or spiritual, it is according to your outlook  "Drishtim jananmayim kritva,
Brahma mayam pasyet jagat."  Make your outlook right.  The Creator know how to take care of His
Creation.

Devotee:.....I want to know how the Self could be realized. Is there any method leading to it?

Bhagavan:  Make effort.  Just as water is got by boring a well, so also you realize the Self by investigation.

Devotee:  Yes.  But some find water readily and others with difficulty.

Bhagavan:  But you already see the moisture on the surface. You are hazily aware of the Self.  Pursue it.
When the effort ceases the Self shines forth.

Devotee:  How to train the mind to look within?

Bhagavan:  By practice.  The mind is the intelligent phase leading to its own destruction, for Self to
manifest.

Devotee: How to destroy the mind?

Bhagavan:  Water cannot be made dry water.  Seek the Self, the mind will be destroyed.

Adi Sankara and Tiru Jnana Sambandha:

Adi Sankara lived after Tiru Jnana Sambandha.  Tiru Jnana Sambandha's birth is roughly estimated
around 6 Century AD.  Sri Sankara has lived sometime in 7th Century AD. In Sri Soundarya Lahari,
Sri Sankara has sung only about Tiru Jnana Sambandha.  He calls him as Dravida Sisu, the
son of Dravida land.  Sri Kanchi Chandrasekara Saraswati also has said that this reference is about
Tiru Jnana Sambandha. The dates mentioned above are rough estimates by Sri Neelakanta Sastri,
in his book History of South India.

As  Bhagavan says, He mentally enacted Death by imitating a corpse and posed Himself a series of questions
to get the source of the ego.  Moreover, the Scriptures point out that none can go to heaven or even to the
nether world in flesh and blood, but only the soul  (barring a few exceptions like Sundaramurti Nayanar,
Jnaneswarar).  Perhaps Nachiketa and the others too had a physical death with only the soul traversing
to the Yama Loka, and later coming back alive, somewhat akin to Bhagavan's second death experience
(though He did not travel to any other world) at the Tortoise Rock on Arunachala where He says that His
physical faculties like the heart beat, circulation of blood and respiration had completely stopped for about
15 minutes with the body turning livid blue, but with His usual current of awareness continuing to remain
in that state as well.  Thereafter, apparently a shock passed suddenly through His body reviving respiration
and circulation with enormous force bringing back the color of life on the skin.

Another striking point with Nachiketa's and Savitri's episodes is the period of penance for 'three days'.
Perhaps it has some spiritual significance as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa too experienced nirvikalpa
samadhi in a matter of only three days leaving his Advaitin initiator Totapuri stunned as he himself attained
the state only after years of practice.  Sri Ramakrishna's utter disregard for food and water, and one pointed
concentration on the objective instructed by the Guru, and the subsequent attainment of the goal in a mere
three days was hailed as absolutely phenomenal by His own instructor.

With respect to boons, one may wonder that if they encountered Death only at the mental realm by keen inquiry,  how was it possible to obtain them from Yama.  This perhaps may be interpreted in the light of
questions posed by Ganapati Muni in Ramana Gita on worldly desires.  Jnaanaayaiva samaadhih kim
kaamaayaapyuta kalpate and Kaamena yogamabhyasa sthitaprajno .. saaphalyam adhigachchati va na va.
He asks Bhagavan whether the spiritual practice would confer only Jnana on the Sadhak or would it also
fulfill his worldly desires.  He further asks that if a Sadhak starts his practice with the objective of getting
his worldly desires fulfilled and eventually attains Self Knowledge, what would be the fate of those desires.

Bhagavan says,  Kaamaarabdhassamaadhistu kaamam phalati nischitam - Such worldly desires with which
the Sadhak sets out before attaining Jnana would certainly be fulfilled.

contd.,

Tiru Naalaip Povar Puranam:

Verse  1:

பகர்ந்துலகு சீர்போற்றும்
    பழையவளம் பதியாகுந்
திகழ்ந்தபுனல் கொள்ளிடம்பொன்
   செழுமணிகள் திரைக்கரத்தால்
முகந்துதர இருமருங்கும்
   முளரிமலர்க் கையேற்கும்
அகன்பணைநீர் நன்னாட்டு
   மேற்கானாட் டாதனுர்.

It is a fecund and hoary town admired by the world
For its glory; it is Aatanoor of Melkanadu
In the Chozha realm; here the lotuses of vast fields
Situate on both sides of the pure-watered Kollidam,
Receive with their flowery hands, the gold and the gems
Borne aloft by the billowy hands of the river.

Having hailed the glory of Rudra-Pasu-Patiyar
Who was blessed to abide near Him and hail Him
Of the sharp trident, we now proceed to hymn
The divine servitor, Nalai-p-povar who would
Serve without the temple and without the precincts
Of forted Thillai.

Rudra Pasupathi Nayanar Puranam concluded.

As he chanted Sri Rudram with ever-during love,
He came to abide under the gracious dancing feet
Of the Lord and came to be hailed by the world
With the renowned name Rudra-Pasu-Patiyar.

He who was like unto Brahma seated on lotus
Chanted Sri Rudram -- the very fruit of the true Vedas --,
During broad day and eventide, without fail;
When he chanted thus for some days he attained
At-one-ment; the Lord of Uma was pleased.

Chanting Sri Rudram, this Brahmin hailed
The flower-feet of the Lord, unknown to Vishnu;
His heart poised in Vedic devotion, in love

Which is by the Vedas treasured; thus he thrived
In this way of life as a leader.
