Verse 199:

ஆளுடைய நாயகன்தன்
   அருள்பெற்றங் ககன்றுபோய்
வாளைபாய் புனற்பழனத்
   திருப்பழன மருங்கணைந்து
காளவிடம் உண்டிருண்ட
   கண்டர்பணிக் கலன்பூண்டு
நீள்இரவில் ஆடுவார்
   கழல்வணங்க நேர்பெற்றார்.

With the gracious leave of the Lord he came
To Tiruppazhanam rich in watery fields where valai fish
Leap in joy; there was he blessed to adore the feet
Of the Lord whose throat is blue with the hue
Of the venom and who decked with serpents
For jewels, dances during mid-night.

Verse 198:

கருகாவூர் முதலாகக்
   கண்ணுதலோன் அமர்ந்தருளும்
திருவாவூர் திருப்பாலைத்
   துறைபிறவும் சென்றிறைஞ்சிப்
பெருகார்வத் திருத்தொண்டு
   செய்துபெருந் திருநல்லூர்
ஒருகாலும் பிரியாதே
   உள்ளுருகிப் பணிகின்றார்.

Thence he visited many shrines beginning with
Tirukkarukavoor, Tiruavoor and Tiruppalatthurai
Where the brow-eyed Lord is enshrined in grace,
Adored Him and rendered Him great service
Borne by spiraling desire; he abode at Tirunalloor
Hailing it in melting love and never from it parting.

The Lord of language rendered fitting service divine
Everyday for the Lord of Tirunalloor, sang
Many garlands of Tamizh psalms melodic
And hailed Him; thus rendering divine service
He sojourned there.

நனைந்தனைய திருவடிஎன்
   தலைமேல்வைத் தார்என்று
புனைந்ததிருத் தாண்டகத்தால்
    போற்றிசைத்துப் புனிதர்அருள்
நினைந்துருகி விழுந்தெழுந்து
   நிறைந்துமலர்ந் தொழியாத
தனம்பெரிதும் பெற்றுவந்த
   வறியோன்போல் மனம்தழைத்தார்.

"He set his moist feet divine on my head!"
Thus he hymned the divine Tandakam, hailed
The lord in melodious music, and melting in love
Thinking of the Holy One's grace, he fell down
In adoration and rose up; he blossomed inly
And was filled with the charm of fulfillment;
Like an utterly indigent person endowed,
On a sudden, with limitless wealth, his mind rejoiced.

நன்மைபெரு கருள்நெறியே
   வந்தணைந்து நல்லூரின்
மன்னுதிருத் தொண்டனார்
   வணங்கிமகிழ்ந் தெழும்பொழுதில்
உன்னுடைய நினைப்பதனை
   முடிக்கின்றோம் என்றவர்தம்
சென்னிமிசைப் பாதமலர்
   சூட்டினான் சிவபெருமான்.

When the old servitor supernal, treading
The way of grace of ever-increasing goodly nature
Arrived there, he bowed before the Lord; as he rose up,
Saying; "We fructify your cherished desire."
Lord-Siva touched his head with His flower-feet.

Verse 194:

"He comes amain, the chieftain!" Thus he opened the hymn
And proceeded to sing thus: "Before death doth destroy me
Plant indelibly Your flowery feet on my head!"
When thus he sang the toothsome decade, the Lord
Bade him thus: 'Come, O Come to Tirunalloor.'
Thus graced, Vakeesar adored Him in joy.

PART I :

(Recently Vilacheri Ranga Iyer's Note Book was recovered from the Asramam Archives.  Ranga was a
childhood friend of Bhagavan and in later years he came to Bhagavan for solace and guidance.  At one
point Ranga's astrology chart showed a difficult period would soon appear in his life. Bhagavan insisted
that Ranga stay at the Asramam and be near Bhagavan at all times.  We have retained the original flavor
of the text as much as possible.)

*

My mother asked Palaniswami, who was standing near Bhagavan, if Bhagavan would take fruits.  Bhagavan
at once stretched out His hand and my mother peeled off the skin from a banana and placed it on Bhagavan's
hand.  Bhagavan graciously ate it.  When next she asked Palaniswami if Bhagavan would walk, Bhagavan
walked a few paces.  Many years afterwards, Bhagavan referred to this occasion and with a smile told me,
'I even thought of speaking to your mother then, but was afraid whether if I did so, she might be
emboldened to drag me away by force to Madurai.  I used to speak a word or two in those days to Palaniswami'.

One day Bhagavan told me, 'It was only your mother that came and saw me here first.  Even my mother
came only afterwards.  Your mother came around 1898, when I was at Pavalakunru.  She was shocked
to find the state in which my body was and cried and exclaimed, 'has your father's great hospitality  and feeding of the poor brought about this and turned you into a Saint.'  She could not bear to see Bhagavan,
unwashed and with matted hair, sitting on the rocks.  She got down, took the train and joined us at
Villupuram and told us of the pitiable sight she saw.  Referring to this Bhagavan asked me, 'You all stayed
away at Villupuram and sent only your mother. You thought why go and see the mendicant fellow?  Is it not so?  I replied, 'Bhagavan apparently felt that we could not bear to see Him in such a state and so did not give
the conviction then that He was God, an Avatar and a Jnani. She could not come.'

In October 1968 and I was 12 years old.  My parents, elder sister and I had come to Madras, from Pune,
to attend a cousin's wedding after which we went to Chengam, near Tiruvannamalai, where my uncle was
working in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board as Assistant Engineer. One evening, he took us to Arunachaleswarar
Temple and then to Sri Ramanasramam where we were cordially invited and told that we could have dinner
after the evening Puja.

Soon the evening Puja and Veda paraynam at Bhagavan's Samadhi commenced and I began to watch the
proceedings with interest.  What struck me was the presence of several foreigners among the devotees,
wearing Indian attire and keenly attending the Puja. This was the first time that I had seen so many foreigners
in, what I assumed was a Hindu place of worship!

Presently, a couple walked in.  The man, who was unmistakably 'English', was dressed in a spotless white
dhoti, while his European wife was dressed in a sari.  There was a serene look on the man's face which,
at that time, I was too young to notice clearly, but which I now recall vividly in retrospect. I was seated with
my back to the wall in the gentleman's half of the hall, while the couple sat in front of me and a little to my
left, but facing Bhagavan's Samadhi and watching the Puja.  They seemed to take no notice of me.  Those were
the times, when I was filled with nationalist feelings and hatred for everything British.

Verse  28:

Like the correct word connected with its meaning, O Mother, You, like a good smelling flower creeper,
You are connected with Siva, who is in a dance of ananda,   Only to Your devotees who pray to You day
and night, all the wealth and kingly enjoyments, the knowledge of tapas, and Siva padam which will
pave way for Moksha will happen.

Likewise, knowing the Self means being the Self, and not knowing it while apparently being other than
it.  A person wrongly imagines that something is lost, the Self, and that it must be found.  A day will
dawn when such a person will laugh at all their futile efforts.

Sri Ramana used various analogies and would relate each of them in His own wonderful way in order
to illustrate this 'un-covering' of the always existent Absolute, this 'obtaining of the already attained;.
There is the woman who, forgetting her necklace is around her neck, goes anxiously in search of it.
There is the prince who was abandoned in a forest in his infancy and grew up thinking that he was the
son of a hunter.  The third is about ten rustics who, upon crossing a river,. each counted the other nine,
and forgetting to count himself, bewailed the fact that one of their party had drowned.  The last analogy
is the donkey-lion analogy.  In truth, the necklace was never lost, the prince was never not a prince,
the tenth man was never drowned and the lion was never a donkey.

Similarly Bhagavan questioned the aptness of the popular word, equivalent to realization in Sanskrit,
'sakashatkaram', because the suffix 'karam' implies actions or 'doing something' to bring about enlightenment.
He said the Self is ever 'sakshat', i.e. manifest and shining all the time and all one has 'do' is to drop the
'karam' or the 'pungency of action'  with regard to Enlightenment.  (Talks 565 and Day by Day pp. 81, 125,
317-18, 328-29.).  Bhagavan said in the practice of Jagrat Sushupti, one merely pays unremitting attention
to the ever pulsating sense of 'I' in order to be eventually swallowed by its limitless expanse and thus be freed
from the limitation of 'I am the body' consciousness.  Such a consummation of the pursuit of Atma Vichara
is truly experiential because it then becomes direct, immediate Knowledge (aparoksha Jnanam).  It is not
gained by mere intellectual mastery of Vedanta Sastra or dazzling oratory or prolonged listening to such
discourses. (Katha Upanishad Verse 1.2.23.  See also Ulladu Narpadu Verse 22.)

Verse  546:

He who has false knowledge (the knowledge of connection with this gross body), feels pleasure and pain,
good and evil; but he who has broken all connections with the body and has identified himself with the Self,
(one who is thoughtful), where there is any good or evil or their results for him?

Verse 547:

It is the shadow of the earth that falls upon the sun, but the ignorant who do not know the real nature
of the thing,  say the sun is swallowed by the dragon, although it is never swallowed.

Verse 548:

In like manner, the fool, seeing this knower of Brahman, thinks he is of the body, though he is free from
the bondages of body and all.

Verse 549:

He remains with the body just as the cast off skin of a snake, taken here and there by the vital forces.
(prana).

Verse 550:

As a log is taken along the course of water in places high and low, so the body of this knower of Brahman
is led in the enjoyment of things by the will of the Lord, according to his actions done in the past.

Reaching Tiru Satthimutram he hailed Sivakkozhuntu
Who approvingly delighted in the exemplary pooja
Lovingly performed by Himavant's daughter; he adored
The Lord who is ever sweet; he then repaired
To the shrine's yard, performed his regular service
Of uzhavaram and hailed the Lord in Tamizh hymns.
