Verse  178:

As he crossed the vast tanks and fields
And neared Yerukkattham Puliyur,
The great Nilakanta Paanar adored him and said:
"This place girt with cloud-capped gardens
Is your servant's native place."
The divine child, the abode of rare Vedas
And Scriptures, and verily an elephant-cub,
Reached the place in great delight.

From Sadhu Arunachala (Major Chadwick) writes, in Arunachala's
Ramana, Boundless Ocean of Grace, Volume 6, Sri Ramanasramam,
Tiruvannamalai:-

"Those who expect Bhagavan Ramana to hand them Self Realization,
as if it were some tangible thing, are surely sadly deluded.  How
can anybody give one what one has already got?  All He can do
is to help one to remove the ignorance that hides it.  It is like
going to lake with a cup and sitting by its side praying to it to
fill the cup with water.  You may sit there for a thousand years
but it is certain that unless you lean forward and dip the cup
into the water yourself, nothing will happen.  Even then you
have to make certain that the cup is not already full of a lot
of rubbish.  Most cups are!

"How then to obtain the perfect state?"  -- you may ask.  You
may as well ask, "How to empty the cup of rubbish?"

Bhagavan Ramana tells one other thing.  He says "BE".  Just
be your real Self, that is all.

"Certainly it sounds all right," you say "but when one tries to
do it, it does not seem easy.  Has He no method?"

Method!  Well what exactly do you mean by method?  Sitting
on the floor and concentrating on the navel?  Or blowing the
wind out of alternative nostrils?  Or repeating some incantation
one 10 million and 8 times?  No, He has not got any method.

All these are no doubt good in their way and help to prepare
one.  But Bhagavan does not happen to teach them.  That is all!

"Then what am I to do?"

"You must just BE," He says.  And to BE, you must know the
" I that is."  To know the "I that is", just go on enquiring,
"Who am I?"  Don't take any notice of anything except the "I",
throw everything else like the rubbish out of the cup.  And when you have at last found the "I" BE.

All talk.  All empty words.  "There is nothing to find.  Nothing
at all is except the "I".  Why worry about anything else?  Just BE, now and always, as you were, as you are, and as you ever will be.

It sounds so easy, doesn't it?  Bhagavan Ramana says that it is the easiest thing in the world.
Ayye adi sulabham, anma viddhai....I really don't know.

The fact is that all our hidden vices and evil tendencies  start to pop up their heads, which one never suspected were there at all.  But it is all for the good.   Bhagavan Ramana says that they all have to come out.  But let them come out, not take charge.  Don't give way to them. This practice is not really easy, as we all know.

(And that is where we all seek Bhagavan Ramana's abundant Grace, Karunaiyal ennai anda nee enakku un kakshi tharalilyai enral..... Sri Arunachala Padigam, Verse 1.  The Guru who has told us the Goal shall also show us the way out.)

Over the ground level thoughts can be overcome by self
inquiry.  No doubt.  But there are numerous hidden thoughts/
tendencies, which are called Vasanas, they have to be brought
out and stamped out.  These are the worse enemies, attacking
us, without warning.  For this only, Guru's Grace is essential.
Mother Azhagamma was in death bed.  Bhagavan was holding
His hands on her head and chest.  Bhagavan Ramana says later:
"....So many thoughts came as mental  pictures to her swiftly for
some minutes.  Then they all got dissolved and the breath got
merged in the Heart...."

(The following essay is a Book Extract from Yoga and the Sacred Fire: Self Realization and Planetary
Transformation, published by Lotus Press, Twin Lakes, U.S.A.)

***

Imagines for a moment - as in the Isaac Asimov movie and science fiction novel, Fantastic Yoga -
that you are reduced in size to a miniscule level, placed inside a human body in a microscopic
vessel and begin to travel through it.  You would see blood and fluid, perhaps noting larger tissues
and organs.  You might consider that a blood vessel was simply a river or that the cells in the body
were creatures in their own right, with tissues and organs as lands and mountains.  Confronted by
the diversity of forms inside the organism, you would not perceive the overall organism.  You would
not even imagine that these apparently different entities were part of a single person with its own
consciousness who could travel at will, carrying them along as part of his own greater individuality.

We are in the same position as individuals in the conscious universe.  We do not perceive the greater
cosmic being but only the smaller objects or entities within it, the forms and creatures of our external
environment.  As creatures ourselves, we look at the universe from the inside like mere cells in a greater
organism.  We miss the overall being, the Divinity that exists at a vaster level than all we perceive.
We exaggerate our own independence and importance, thinking that we are real in our own rights
rather than just small parts of a totality that extends far beyond us.

However, those who live in harmony with nature, from animals to tribal peoples, so those who practice
deep meditation, are aware that they are part of a greater cosmic organism, that they are cells in the
body of God.  In this regard they have much to teach us about the real structure of the universe,
in which everything is part of a greater whole that is alive and aware.

Of the liars who cannot behold Your salvific

I,

O martial Bull,
abide here feeding and clothing me.

This decade is called Anubhoga Suddhi. First one has got Amubhava Suddhi.  This gets transformed into
Anubhoga Suddhi:

(5.1):

O Lord-God !
O my Chief !
O my Father !
O God !
O Annihilator of my embodiment !
I am worth nothing;
I am a vicious dog;
I am a base one.
You know,
I do not think Of You that rule me.
O radiant One !
O Lord of Ambalam !
I know not what I should do.

Verse  52:

O Abhirami!  Those who love You and do tapas, these Jnanis pray only to Your lotus feet!
To know that lotus feet, the identification is what, O the consort of Siva!  The world,, the chariot,
horses, elephants, very highly priced head gears, palanquins, showering gold, very expensive pearl
garlands - these are the marks that show that these Jnanis bear Your flower like feet!

47:  I am of the form that is only knowledge; of a unitary nature.  I am the endless essence.  I am
Brahman alone.

48:  I am of the form that is Being and solitary transcendence.  I alone am.  I am devoid of significance
or the absence of it.  I am Brahman alone.

49:  I am of the form that is immeasurable.  I am of the form that is undefinable by logic.  I am of the
form that is inconceivable.  I am Brahman alone.

50:  I am not of the form of liquid essence.  I am free from the sorrow.  I shine as being pervasive.
I am Brahman alone.

51:  I am devoid of all activity.  I am divested of all distinction.  I am without all doubts.  I am Brahman
alone.

52:  I am without the ego sense.  Neither am I with the sense that I have no ego.  I am ever of the nature
of Brahman. Brahman alone am I>

53:  I am neither Brahma nor others following him.  I have no traits of Kesava (Vishnu) at all nor am I
with aspects of Sankara. I am Brahman alone.

54:  I shine as silence.  I am Brahman alone.  I am neither the most minute or the most grand.  I am
the most minute and the most grand.

55:  I am not the body's luster nor do I illuminate the world.  I am a solid mass of consciousness
and its part.  I am ever of the nature of Being.

Arunachala Siva.

319:   Thus all time is only present;  men make this division only by words.  The Eternal Reality is
indeed the Real Self alone.  Hence He alone is present, nothing else.

320:   Hence the aspirant must aim at experience of the Truth of that Self by attaining the Supreme
State;  the discussion of the past and of the future is declared to be like trying to count without the\
knowledge of the number 'one'.

321:  Only the number 'one' exists, and none else, because all numbers are modifications of it.  In
the same way, the Consciousness, which is the Self, alone exists, and the whole world is only He.

322:  As one becomes able, by knowing the number 'one', to know all the numbers, so, after knowing
the Truth of themselves, the sages come to know the truth of the world also.

323:  Knowledge of anything other than the Self without knowing the Truth of oneself, the Guru
says, is only ignorance.  Whatever one knows without right awareness of the Self, all that he knows
only contrary to the truth.

324:  When by the Quest of the Self, that Self is known, there remains nothing else to be known.
To the Sage all things shine only as the Self, and hence the Self is well known as the All (in the Vedanta).

325:  Therefore Bhagavan Sri Ramana says that Omniscience is only the State of Being the Real
Self;  He also says that what is considered as omniscience by the Ignorant is only ignorance.

326:  This world is not other than the body;  this body is not distinct from the mind;  the mind does
not exist apart from the Real Self;  therefore the Self is all the world.

327:  'How was I in my previous birth, and how shall I be in the next birth?'  Such inquires are
only due to ignorance, because the Self was never born.

Endowed with grace, to the divine entrance
Decked with beauteous bells; here too he adored;
As he rose up, the glorious Paanar who was privileged
To accompany him, adored his feet
And entreated him thus: "May you be pleased
To adore the Lord of my native place and other
Peerless shrines situated on the bank of the Niva."
To this the divine child signified his assent.
