எத்தன் மையரா யினும்ஈசனுக் கன்பர் என்றால்
அத்தன் மையர் தாம்நமையாள்பவர் என்று கொள்வார்
சித்தந் தெளியச் சிவன்அஞ்செழுத் தோது வாய்மை
நித்தம் நியமம் எனப்போற்றும் நெறியில் நின்றார்.


"What though their nature be, if yet they be
The servitors of the Lord, they would, as of right,
Be entitled to rule us!" Such was his conviction.
"The daily duty is to chant in truth the Panchaakshara of
Siva for the clarification of the mind-heart."
He stood poised in this, his way.

யாழின் மொழியாள் தனிப்பாகரைப் போற்றும் யாகம்
ஊழின் முறைமை வழுவாதுல கங்க ளான
ஏழும் உவப்பப் புரிந்தின்புறச் செய்த பேற்றால்
வாழுந் திறம்ஈசர் மலர்க்கழல் வாழ்த்தல் என்பார்.

He was convinced that beatitude flowed out
Of the performance of the Yajna for the Lord--
Concorporate with His Consort whose speech is
Tuneful like the Yaazh--
In the way befitting the rules of the scriptures,
And without deviation, for the delight of all the seven worlds,
And that everlasting life is attained
By hailing the flower-feet of the Lord.

Verse  1:


சூதம் பயிலும் பொழில்அம்பரில் தூய வாய்மை
வேதம் பயிலும் மறையாளர் குலத்தின் மேலோர்
ஏதம் புரியும் எயில்செற்றவர்க் கன்பர் வந்தால்
பாதம் பணிந்தா ரமுதூட்டுநற் பண்பின் மிக்கார்.

In Tiruambar rich in gardens where mangoes thrive,
He hailed from the clan of the holy practitioners
Of the Vedas; he was lofty in his disposition; if devotees
Of the Lord who burnt the triple hostile citadels
Came to him, he would fall at their feet
And treat them to sumptuous feast.

8.  There is no past, no future.  Brahman stays constant.  I am consciousness.
The insentient is insignificant.  The destruction of the body is only consciousness.

9.  Wherever there be the mind even in the least, I, of the Self, annihilate the mind.
That which is truth, knowledge and infinity is not falsehood, insentience or painful.

10.  The Self is truth and infinite.  The Self is body only -- of this there is no doubt.
Whatever news is heard that is all unreal.  I alone am the light of the lights.

11.  Even the numeration one is unreal.  Brahman alone is real, ever I am.  Indeed
everything is unreal, being an emanation from the Supreme always.

12. Though devoid of all limbs, being eternal, I am the Supreme alone.  All that is
seen is naught for me in the least.  I say this because I am consciousness.

13.  I have no anger whatsoever.  I say this because I am consciousness.  There is
nothing whatsoever to be denoted as 'this' -- nothing at all.

14.  I am the attribute-less Brahman, being taught by the wise Guru.  Relative
knowledge is Brahman with attributes.  I am knowledge personified.

The Glory of the Presence:


I remain inundated in the bliss of Bhagavan's presence.  Eighteen days went by 
in this bliss.  Bhagavan's potent presence kept me in abidance in the very core of
my heart.  An idea struck me"  'Well!  I am now stabilized in this state.  Here in
Tiruvannamalai, my mental composure is disrupted by the chores of daily routine.
Whereas if I return home, I could sit uninturrupted in meditative stillness for days
on end,'  I was nagged by a feeling of guilt at being a guru's guest, regularly eating
here without doing any work in return.  I discussed the matter with Ramakrishna
Swami and he agreed with me.  So both of us saluted Bhagavan by way of leave
taking and He gave me a silent nod.  We resolved to remain at home in isolation,
absorbed in samadhi, talk to no one when talked to, and never attempt to meet
each other. With these resolutions we reached our respective homes. 

My people, who had been worried of my whereabouts, were very happy to see me
back.  As decided earlier, my friend and I stayed in our homes, keeping silence.
My folks did not mind my silence, delighted as they were to have me back home.
Some days went by thus.  The meditative poise which I had experienced in Bhagavan's proximity steadily declined and then was totally gone.  I then realized
my foolhardiness.  I could neither come to terms with my disenchantment not give
vent to it by telling someone. During the period of dilemma Ramakrishna Swami
called on me one night.  What a coincidence!  He too was sailing in the same boat,
he said. We had counsel between ourselves.  We felt ashamed at our haughtiness of
assuming to have attained that exalted state, which, in days of yore, people could
attain only after dwelling in jungle hermitages for many years, living close to spiritual                 
masters and through intense efforts on their own part.  In retrospect, I regretted
my conceit in dragging out with me Ramakrishna Swami too who had found tranquility in Bhagavan's proximity.  We now understood the power of our Bhagavan's
physical presence.  We realized that to remain anymore at home would be of no avail,
and that the only thing to be done was to seek refuge again at Bhagavan's feet.
Fixing a date of departure thence, my friend returned home.  I conveyed my decision
to my parents.  Shocked and least prepared for it, they did all they could to persuade
me to remain home, but I was firm in my resolve. I tried to placate them saying that our of the the four or five children of theirs, it would be a matter of pride for them
if one of their offsprings takes to spirituality and that they in fact would lose nothing
by my going away.  This time I did not want to run away unannounced.  I would go
only with the blessings of my elders.  Besides, I assured them that I would ever be in
Tiruvannamalai with Bhagavan, and that they were welcome at any time to visit
me and likewise, I too shall visit them.  After such reasoning, I put their minds at rest
and took leave of them.

    புராண நீதந் தருளாதே
குழகா கோல மறையோனே
    கோனே என்னைக் குழைத்தாயே. 


Having wrought beauty less things,
I cry hoarse.
O Owner !
You revealed Your resplendently divine form unto me and made me serve You.
Without conferring on me the great and glorious beatitude,
O perfect One,
O sempiternal Youth,
O Brahmin beautiful,
O King,
You have vexed me sore.

கண்ணார் நுதலோய் கழலிணைகள்
    கண்டேன் கண்கள் களிகூர
எண்ணாதிரவும் பகலும்நா
    னவையே எண்ணும் அதுவல்லால்
மண்மேல் யாக்கை விடுமாறும்
    வந்துன் கழற்கே புகுமாறும்
அண்ணா எண்ணக் கடவேனோ
    அடிமை சால அழகுடைத்தே.


O One whose forehead sports an eye !
I beheld the pair Of Your ankleted feet,
my eyes feeling ecstatic.
I think not of aught else;
I think of them only,
by day as well as night.
Barring this,
will I think of the way of passing away on earth,
or of the way of reaching Your ankleted feet?
Ha,
very beautiful indeed is my servitude unto You !

    என்ன தோஇங் கதிகாரம்
காயத் திடுவாய் உன்னுடைய
    கழற்கீழ் வைப்பாய் கண்ணுதலே.


You Yourself,
in love,
redeemed and ruled me - the basest among dogs.
I should merely place in Your charge my illusive,
embodied life.
Am I competent to reason out things?
O One who sports an eye in the forehead !
You may confer on me embodiment or keep me under Your ankleted feet.

O Hill-like One,
did You not that very day,
when You redeemed and ruled me,
make Your own my soul,
body and all that I owned?
Can I,
This day meet with any trouble at all?
O our God,
eight-armed and triple-eyed !
You may do me good or ill.
Is lordship over these deeds mine?

    யானும் அதுவே வேண்டின்அல்லால்
வேண்டும் பரிசொன் றுண்டென்னில்
    அதுவும் உன்றன் விருப்பன்றே. 



You know what I should pray for;
You will wholly grant me what I pray for.
Unto Vishnu and Brahma that seek You,
You are hard of access.
You willingly made me serve You.
Whatever You willingly bless me with,
I desire nought but that.
If yet,
I seek aught,
is not that indeed Your own desire?

தேறும் வகைஎன் சிவலோகா
    திகைத்தால் தேற்ற வேண்டாவோ.


You are all the bodily instruments commencing from the articulating tongue !
You are the source of clarity as well as bewilderment.
Evil and good:
You are wholly these.
Truly speaking,
there is Nought apart from You.
How may I gain clarity?
If I stand nonplussed,
should You not,
In mercy,
clarify my intellect?

O Bridegroom of Her whose eyes are like the gazelle's !
O Monarch !
You caused me forget Your glory and made me enter this flesh and wallow in it.
Yet,
O king !
I repeatedly appeal to You thus:
"O for the day,
when,
aware of my -Your servitor's -,
Nescience,
You will be pleased,
In grace,
to call me unto You!"

O One whose Half is Her of beautiful liana-like waist !
I was comforted by the thought that You had,

Why did You not grace me with the wondrous splendor,
and shatter my evil-ridden embodiment?
O Our Lord Of Siva-loka !
O Lord-Owner !
If You do not bid me serve You,
but cause me continue my embodiment will it be at all condign punishment for me?

பிழைத்தாற் பொறுக்க வேண்டாவோ

றழைத்தால் அருளா தொழிவதே

O Lord-Owner,
if my hoary and cruel malady of Karma assails me,
You do not save me;
so if I,
the one of evil Karma,
Toil hard,
can I gain salvation at all?
O Consort of Uma !
Be pleased to redeem and rule me.
If I err,
should You not forgive me?
When I call You aloud thus:
"Is this Proper,
O One in whose matted crest the crescent rests!
O God,
should You leave Your servitor,
un-blessed?"
