For the downfall of the faiths in their course
As they drifted away from the Vedas,
He was privileged to be blessed with Gnosis
By Him in whose matted hair, the celestial Ganga,
Immense and broad, flows;
He began to crawl gently in the vestibule
Mantled in the rays of the moon.

நாமறியோம் பரசமயம்
    உலகிலெதிர் நாடாது
போமகல என்றங்கை
    தட்டுவதும் புனிதன்பால்
காமருதா ளம்பெறுதற்
    கொத்துவதுங் காட்டுவபோல்
தாமரைச்செங் கைகளினால்
    சப்பாணி கொட்டினார்.   



He clapped his hands as if to say: "Get away
From us, you of alien faith! We know you not."
With his roseate hands lotus-like keeping time.
He clapped sappaani*;
It looked as though that he was even then
Practicing with his hands the art of sounding
The cymbals that he would ere long receive
From the Holy One.

    வளர்புகலிப் பிள்ளையார்
அருமறைகள் தலையெடுப்ப
    ஆண்டதிரு முடியெடுத்துப்
பெருமழுவர் தொண்டல்லால்
    பிறிதிசையோம் என்பார்போல்
திருமுகமண் டலமசையச்
    செங்கீரை யாடினார்.   


The child of Pukali, in keeping with the parvas
Grew well that the Vedas might flourish;
He lifted his head and played senkeerai
Gently swaying sideways his shapely head
As if saying: "We serve none but Siva who is
Decked with the great battle-axe."

தாயர்திரு மடித்தலத்தும்
    தயங்குமணித் தவிசினிலும்

    தூங்குமலர்ச் சயனத்தும்
சேயபொருள் திருமறையும்
    தீந்தமிழும் சிறக்கவரு
நாயகனைத் தாலாட்டு
    நலம்பலபா ராட்டினார்.


The child was laid on the lap
Of the nursing matrons, on gem-paved seats,
On the cradle inlaid with gems of purest ray
And again on the bed of flowers:
The hero born to gain fresh honor and glory
For the Vedas and the nectarean Tamizh
That confer on men the true meaning of life.

There is one way of looking at the mystery of Arunachala. It baffles people, both believers and
non-believers.  And that is true.  There are a lot of particles whose nature and structure
science is yet to be unraveled .  In the Swiss-French border, people are working at 'discovery'
of God's Particle or Higgs Particle, the primary Source, from which the entire universe took its
birth.  This project is called Large Hadron Collider Experiment and they have so far failed.
Stephen Hawking the author of the famous science books [not fiction], like the Brief
History of Time, the illustrious Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in Cambridge, has said that
god's particle can never be found.

Because to search for God outside is a waste because the god is within you.  That
is why Brahma Jnanis have found the universe within them and if they have done it,
why not Arunachala can contain the entire universe, with all its riches and pleasures.
[Arunachala Mahatmyam].

Bhagavan Ramana said that Arunachala is the axis of the earth and there must be some mysterious
hill on the other side of the earth, to balance.  Major Chadwick tried to find out from some
books on geography, but could not succeed.  But now after 50 years, some scientists have found
out one Mount Pacchu, near Peru in South America, which is very powerful religiously
as per the aborigines of that place.  I have written sometime back about the latitude and longitude
details of this Mount Pacchu, in the Forum.

Jnanis words never fail.

ALATA SHANTI - can be understood in two different ways.
And that is how Sankara interprets.

FIRE - Thoughts emanating from the mind.
THE BURNING STICK - Mind.

Another way:

FIRE - Thought emanating from the mind.
THE BURNING STICK - Mind.
The QUENCHED FIRE WHERE STICK ALONE REMAINS - the Self.

The Stick is just is.  It has no form, no mind, no thoughts.

Bhagavan Ramana and earlier Sankara said in Vivekachoodamani, that mano-nasam
is moksham.  Staying in thoughtless state permanently is Liberation.

கேட்டாரும் அறியாதான் கேடொன் றில்லான்
    கிளையிலான் கேளாதே எல்லாங் கேட்டான்
நாட்டார்கள் விழித்திருப்ப ஞாலத் துள்ளே
    நாயினுக்குத் தவிசிட்டு நாயி னேற்கே
காட்டா தனவெல்லாங் காட்டிப் பின்னுங்
    கேளா தனவெல்லாங் கேட்பித் தென்னை
மீட்டேயும் பிறவாமற் காத்தாட் கொண்டான்
    எம்பெருமான் செய்திட்ட விச்சை தானே.



They that have heard of Him know Him not;
He is flawless;
He is kin-less;
He heard all things Without listening;
to the open-eyed wonderment Of countrymen,
in this world,
He assigned A seat of honor to a dog;
unto me a cur,
He revealed things unrevealed and caused me To hear things heretofore unheard;
He forfended My re-birth by saving and ruling me.
This indeed is the marvel wrought by my Lord-God.

தனியனேன் பெரும்பிறவிப் பௌவத் தெவ்வத்
    தடந்திரையால் எற்றுண்டு பற்றொன் றின்றிக்
கனியைநேர் துவர்வாயார் என்னுங் காலாற்
    கலக்குண்டு காமவான் சுறவின் வாய்ப்பட்
டினியென்னே உய்யுமா றென்றென் றெண்ணி
    அஞ்செழுத்தின் புணைபிடித்துக் கிடக்கின் றேனை
முனைவனே முதல் அந்தம் இல்லா மல்லற்
    கரைகாட்டி ஆட்கொண்டாய் மூர்க்க னேற்கே.



All alone,
I was tossed about by the huge and cruel Billows of the vast ocean of birth with nought To support me;
swirled by the wind ? the women Of coral-like lips of fruitage -,
I was caught By the jaws of the shark of mighty lust.
I thought and thought:
``How at all can I gain Deliverance?
`` Then I caught hold of the Raft ? The Mystic five  letters.
Unto me in such a plight,
O Primal Lord,
You showed the uberous shore Which is beginning-less and endless.
It is thus,
Even thus,
You redeemed and ruled me ? the intractable one.

40: வாள்-நுதல் கண்ணியை, விண்ணவர் யாவரும் வந்து இறைஞ்சிப்
பேணுதற்கு எண்ணிய எம்பெருமாட்டியை, பேதை நெஞ்சில்
காணுதற்கு அண்ணியள் அல்லாத கன்னியை, காணும்--அன்பு
பூணுதற்கு எண்ணிய எண்ணம் அன்றோ, முன் செய் புண்ணியமே.

ஒளி பொருந்திய நெற்றியுடையவள் அபிராமி! தேவர்களும் வணங்க வேண்டும் என்ற நினைப்பை உண்டு பண்ணக்கூடியவள்! அறியாமை நிறைந்த நெஞ்சுடையார்க்கு எளிதில் புலப்படாதவள். என்றும் கன்னியானவள். இப்படிப்பட்டவளை நான் அண்டிக் கொண்டு வணங்க எண்ணினேன். இதுவே நான் முற்பிறவிகளில் செய்த புண்ணியமாகும்.

Abhirami has got a shining forehead.  Even devas want to worship her.  She is not easily accessible to those
who have got ignorance in their minds. She is ever a spinster. I wanted to pray to Her. Even this itself
is the merit of mine that accrued from my previous births.

Irrespective of this, however, the main point is that scriptural  statements cannot be taken out of context.
The whole section in which a statement occurs must be read before drawing any conclusion.  Sankara
gives the example of the 'sheath' model used in the Taittiriya Upanishad.  Here a statement is made that
the sheath made of the vital force Pranamya Kosa, is the Atman.   This, of course, is non sense.  But the
next verse says that, all well actually, Atman is not this sheath but the mental sheath, Manomaya Kosa.
No, it is not!  And so on.  The entire section has to be read together to get the whole story.

Then Gaudapada makes the point, mentioned above, that we should never accept what is unreasonable;
we always have to analyze the whole and apply reason.  When a scriptural text makes a statement regarding
the creation of elements, people etc., but later makes another statement to the effect that there is really no
creation, then we have to conclude that the 'creation'  to which it referred initially is only an apparent one.
An apparent creation is equivalent to no creation at all.  There is no denying that we see a seemingly separate
world but it is a Mithya world, being only name and form of Brahman.

13. O snake-embellished one;  who slayed Manmatha;  wearer of ashes; consort of Sailaja, the mountain
born;  one who protects those in distress; moon wearing; dispenser of joy; protect me!

14.  Thou has shattered the great sacrificial Yajna of Daksha; three eyed; mounted on the powerful bull;
with a broad chest sparkling with sacred ashes and snake embellishments and choicest Rudraksha garlands;
rendered Vishnu's son Manmatha to ashes with a glance; devastated the evil Tripuras who sought refuge in
invincible cities; supporter of the myriads of Devas who are like lice in Thy hair; partaker of alms;
who rejoices by the worship of the lotus eyed Hari;  who blinded Bhaga,  one of the twelve Adityas (sun gods)
that supported Daksha Yajna; the inexhaustible, bestower of freedom O Maheswara, great Lord, save me!

15. Confer upon me Thy compassion O Siva; bestower of interminable fruit; auspicious visioned; eraser of
defects; having Takshaka serpent for bracelet; consumer of venom; dazzling eyed; having the earth for chariot; the inexhaustible;  the remover of adjuncts and relative existence; moon decked one who made Hari
as an arrow, grant me the ultimate good.

236.  Since Bhagavan Sri Krishna Himself says in the Gita: 'I Myself am the Sage', therefore knowing
this truth of Him as stated in the sacred lore, one should regard the Sage as not different from the God.

237. Also there exists in the text of the Upanishads, that one who wants Deliverance must worship the
Knower of the Self.  If he thinks of Him (the Sage, who is the Guru) as other than God, the thought
will obstruct his pah.

238.  Those devotees who worship Gold as not the Self are wanting in Catholicity.  In the case of a
few of them this defect ceases by the clarification of the intellect after a long time.

239.  The devotee yearns to see the Form of God as conceived by Himself.  Sometimes he may see that
very form;  but this vision is transitory and hence unreal.

240.  Being Himself that very Supreme Being, but regarding Him as other than the Self through devotion
to obtain a Vision of Him!  Is there anything more surprising than this?

241. How can the seeing of a form of the Formless One be a true vision? And how can the vision as not self,
of Him that is the Self, be a true vision?

நீறுதிரு நெற்றியில் நிறுத்திநிறை வித்தார்.



By the grace of the red-haired Lord
On whose crest flows the river,
The holy ash--- the one and only protection--,
Was alone applied on the holy forehead of the child--
The savior of mankind whose birth
Was verily a boon to the whole world--;
He was not burdened with any talisman
As it was but an unwanted excess.

Unto him who was to be fed with the breast-milk
Mixed with the rare scriptural wisdom
By the liana-like Daughter of Himavant,
His mother gave suck in grace; this was indeed
The sweet milk of devotion
For the hallowed feet of the Lord.

The day proper for christening the child was duly fixed;
The goodly babe shone like the young rising sun
That does good to the whole world;
Very like the Infant-God laid on lotus
He was laid in a cradle with gems inlaid.
