Verse 218:


வளையும் ஆர்த்தன வயிர்களும்
    ஆர்த்தன மறையின்
கிளையும் ஆர்த்தன திளைஞரும்
    ஆர்த்தனர் கெழுவும்
களைகண் ஆர்த்ததொர் கருணையின்
    ஆர்கவின் முத்தின்
விளையு மாக்கதிர் வெண்குடை
    ஆர்த்தது மிசையே.   



Chanks blew, so too trumpets; the divisions
Of the Vedas chanted aloud; his kin roared for joy;
The mercy of the Lord who is the life of all lives
Held in its grip all the souls; the white parasol
Decked with lustrous pearls, fluttered
When it was held aloft.

Question, answer, further question, further answer.  This is endless. This reminds of Gaudapada
Karika and Panchadasi, where the "whether the egg came first or the hen came first"... question
is taken up and answered. (This is of course, regarding free will and destiny dichotomy.) 
Sureswara says in Panchadasi:  "Break the egg and crush the neck of the hen.  Throw them both
to the earth.  Prostrate and pray to the earth, from which was born both the first egg or the first hen."
Then all questions will stop.  No answers will come. It is like, as Bhagavan said, the stick that
stirs the funeral pyre..... in Who am I?  The answer-less state (or further question-less state) is
abidance.

This Cosmic Person is both man and woman, the Great God and the Goddess, both the cosmic masculine
and cosmic feminine powers.  It is not simply the essence of humanity but the prototype for plants,
animals and stars and planets.  The Cosmic Person is the universal form, the prime archetype behind
all beings, the 'I behind the I' in all creatures.

This Purusha or consciousness principle of Yoga, however, is no mere philosophical concept, theological
belief or abstract Absolute.  It is the very fire within our hearts that is the light of the entire universe.
The Purusha is Jyotirmaya or 'made of light'.  To truly practice Yoga we must begin with an understanding
of this being of light as our goal.  However, few Yoga students today are aware of the Purusha, much less
its connection to fire, though that has always been the key to the inner process and higher presence of
Yoga. Most meditators aim at understanding the psychological self, not realizing that our true Self is
the cosmic light expressing itself in all of nature, in which our personal psychology gets consumed as
an offering in but an instant.

In the yogic view,  our true individuality is an inner consciousness that unites us with all -- not a physical,
mental or religious entity that keeps us apart. Our Self is mirrored in all the selves in the universe.
If we look deeply, we can see everything in the universe has a personality or spirit within it, whether
it is the Sun, the mountains, animals or human beings. Every form in nature from the rocks to the clouds
is a face of Consciousness. All faces of all creatures, we would say, are masks of God.

The Cosmic Person exists in an embodied form as the soul within all creatures.  We could say that plants
and animals are evolutionary precursors of human beings or younger forms of ourselves, people in the
making as it were.  The Cosmic Person also exists in disembodied forms as spirits behind the forces of
nature.  We could say that the Sun and Moon are cosmic, older or vaster forms of ourselves -- spiritual
powers and personalities.  The whole universe is the cosmic human being taking many different appearances
and assuming many different functions both individually and collectively as part of its manifold expression.

This view was known to the sages of the Rig Veda, in which the teaching of the Purusha first arose:

The Cosmic Person (Purusha) is all this, what has been and what will be.

From his mind, the Moon was born, from his eye came the Sun.  From his mouth arose the powers of
fire and lightning.  From the wind his breath was born.

From his navel came the atmosphere, from his head Heaven, from his feet the Earth and from his ears
the directions of space.  Thus all the worlds were formed. (Rig Veda X.90, 2, 12, 14.)

The human being is a replica of the greater universe, which itself has an organic structure like the human
body.  We are an expression of the 'self conscious universe' holding both spirit and nature within
ourselves.  This means that we exist in all things, not as a separate species but as part of the underlying
fabric of awareness.  Through the unity of consciousness, the human being is the universe and the
universe is a human being.  We could say that the material universe is the body of consciousness,
while consciousness is the soul of the world.

    புறமே போக விடுவாயோ

O Leader whose nature is unknown to others !
O Sire,
You have enslaved me,
the base one,
a vicious dog;
Will You suffer me to drift away?
Who will care for me?

Where will I fare forth,
O my Father Whose divine frame shines like gold?

    தக்க தேமுன் னடியாரைப்
பிடித்த வாறும் சோராமற்
    சோர னேன்இங் கொருத்திவாய்

    சோர்ந்த வாறும் முகங்குறுவேர்
பொடித்த வாறும் இவையுணர்ந்து
    கேடென் றனக்கே சூழ்ந்தேனே.


It is but meet that You keep Your hold on Your Servitors,
lest they should languish;
Your ordaining My lot too is befitting.
I am a sinner.
Here,
I but beheld the trembling lips of a damsel Whose clothing slipped a trifle,
and whose forehead was be-dewed with sweat;
in these indulging I brought about my ruination.

56: ஒன்றாய் அரும்பி, பலவாய் விரிந்து, இவ் உலகு எங்குமாய்
நின்றாள், அனைத்தையும் நீங்கி நிற்பாள்--என்றன், நெஞ்சினுள்ளே
பொன்றாது நின்று புரிகின்றவா. இப் பொருள் அறிவார்--
அன்று ஆலிலையில் துயின்ற பெம்மானும், என் ஐயனுமே.

அபிராமி அன்னையே! நீ ஒன்றாக நின்று, பலவாகப் பிரிந்து, இவ்வுலகில் எங்கும் பரந்திருக்கின்றாய் (பராசக்தியினின்று, பிரிந்த பல சக்திகள்). அவைகளிடத்திலிருந்து நீங்கியும், இருக்கக் கூடியவள் நீ! ஆனால், எளியோனாகிய என் மனத்தில் மட்டும் இடையுறாது நீடு நின்று ஆட்சி செய்கின்றாய். இந்த இரகசியத்தின் உட்பொருளை அறியக் கூடியவர்கள், ஆலிலையில் துயிலும் திருமாலும், என் தந்தை சிவபெருமான் ஆகிய இருவருமே ஆவர்.

O Mother Abhirami!  You are the One but divided into many, spread over the whole world. (These are
different forms of Parasakti).  You can also be away from these Saktis. But You ever in my mind,
this poor creature, and rule over my mind.  Those who understand Your nature, the inner meaning
of this secret, is only Vishnu who sleeps on the banyan leaf and my Father, who is my Father.

14.  You are all.  You are without all.  You are peaceful.  You are supreme indeed.  You are the cause.
You are quiescent. No doubt you are Brahman.


15.  You are of the nature of Being only.  You are the universal Being.  You are of the nature of eternal
purity.  You are Brahman without doubt.

16. You are without an iota of everything. You are devoid of even an atom of anything.  You are devoid
of existence.  You are devoid of non existence etc.,

17.That which you are is He.  You are the great one.  No doubt, you are Brahman.

18.  You are without aim and its qualities.  You are only consciousness.  You are devoid of pain.
You are ever the sole undivided essence.  Without doubt, you are Brahman.

19.  You are of the nature of the substratum of all.  You are of the nature of the light of all.
You are devoid of all discrepancies of meaning.  No doubt, you are Brahman.

20.  You are verily Brahman, devoid of differences and devoid of mishaps etc.,
You are the auspicious, lacking any differentiation.   No doubt, you are Brahman.

351. The doing of actions, the reaping of their fruits, ownership of the body and the like, as well as
worldliness are the attributes of the soul.  They are not attributes of the Real Self, who is only
Pure Consciousness and is unrelated (to the world).

352.  He that is, alas, persuaded that he is the soul, has not got rid of the notion that the body is
himself, because for him who does not known by actual experience that he is only Consciousness,
the belief of identity with the body is inescapable.

353. Since the Self, who is blissful, is experienced by all in the state of deep sleep, the intelligent
man is able to find out, by his subtle intellect, that the Self is other than the body.

354.  Therefore, it is that the sensible man, when he engages in discrimination, does not accept
the notion that the Self is the body.  But all the same, because he has not attained Awareness of the
Truth of the Real Self, he again confounds the Self with the body.

355. So long as the sense of being a soul does not cease, the sense, 'I am the body' does not become
extinct.  But it will be extinguished by attaining the Supreme State, wherein the transcendent nature of
the Self is experienced.

356. Only he is free from the notion, 'I am soul'  who becomes aware of his real Self as the Supreme
Being, the one without a second having attained constant abidance in the Transcendental State; he
is also free from the false notion 'I am the body'.                     

357. The Sadhaka must therefore understand that the Self is not the body, not the mind and not
the soul, and thereafter strive to become aware by Experience of the Self as Pure Consciousness,
by following the path taught by Ramana.

கொண்டல் ஆர்த்தன முழவமும்
    ஆர்த்தன குழுமி
வண்ட றாப்பொலி மலர்மழை
    ஆர்த்தது வானம்   .


Devotees made a joyous uproar; the Vedas resounded;
The hoary Devas shouted for joy; clouds rumbled
And the earth reverberated; drums resounded;
The heavens showered flowers laden with bees.

தோதி யேறினார் உய்ய வுலகெலாம்.



He circumambulated the litter
Decked with lustrous pearls, and prostrated before it;
He hailed its white luster as that of the holy ash,
As he received it by the grace of the Primordial One,
Chanting the Panchaakshara he moved into it
That all the worlds might stand redeemed.

"This is the mercy of the perfect One
Of Aratthurai, the Wearer of the holy ash."
Thus he hymned his peerless garland of verse,
Prayed for a long time and completed his decad.

His decade began with the words: "Entai Eesan?"
The divine music of his decade bred by divine thinking
Filled his mind-heart, and he stood hymning
Before the divine gifts of the Lord, thus:
"The way of the Lord's grace is so, even so."

"The Lord blesses one with the beatitude
Of ever thinking on Him, should one
Hold fast to truth in steadfast love;
He has honored us with the gift
Of a pearly palanquin; to rule us as His servitor
Behold the boon here, He has blessed us with."

தொன்றும் அங்கொழி யாமை உரைத்துமுன்
நின்று போற்றித் தொழுதிட நேர்ந்தது
மன்று ளார்அருள் என்று வணங்கினார்.



They narrated to him all that happened
By the grace of the Lord and adored him
Standing in his presence; he thought thus:
"These are by the grace of the Lord-Dancer."
The godly child adored Him.
