Verse  55:

With a speed exceeding that of the mind
She traveled fast the realms in the north;
She came near the Mount Kailash of pervasive radiance
Where abides the Wielder of the Trident, decked with
A garland of Konrai blooms burgeoning in serried order;
She durst not tread with her feet the holy ascent
But measured it with her head.

Verse  54:

Those that eyed her, fled away struck by her
Awesome form; when she heard them utter words
Scared by her form, she thought thus: "If the Lord
Of celestial beings be pleased to know who I am, of what avail
Are these remarks by the men of earth, strangers to truth?"

She sang the glorious Erattai Mani Malai
In choice anaphoretic verse; prompted by
Spiraling transconsciousness she was on her
Holy way to the argent Mount Kailash great, where abides
The Lord who, of yore, burnt the triple cities.

Struck with awe, they moved away.

What is the meaning of brahmacharya?

Only inquiry into Brahman should be called brahmacharya.

- Sri Ramana Maharshi,  Spiritual Instruction, Chapter II.

In 1975, at the age of 27,  I experienced a spiritual rebirth during a long hitchhike through the U.S. and
Canada.  The first phase was seeing a brighter side of life and people as basically good and benevolent
rather than, as i had thought prior to the journey, evil and selfish.  This attitude had been partly the result
of reading the newspapers too much and listening to daily news -broadcasts about disasters and the
deceitful behavior of people. I had become a cynical pessimist.

My renewed interest in spirituality came through Eastern influences that proved a refreshing relief from
the hell-fire and damnation that was the message received from the religion of my childhood.  I began
reading many books from various sources including the Sankhya philosophy of Hinduism and popular
Western works on Eastern philosophy and religion.  Alan Watts' beautiful works on the playfulness of God
especially inspired me. I learned of Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda but was never
able to find it in the time in the Western bookstores I searched, though it must have been there.  At a later
date the book did come into my life and exerted a powerful influence.

Verse  23:

O Mother Abhirami!  I shall not keep in mind any other God. I shall not have enmity with Your devotees!
I shall not love any other religion excepting Yours (Saktam). You are there in the three worlds, and also
beyond them.  You are the liquor that makes Anandam in my mind.  You are the Anandam of Anandam!
You are the pupil of my eye, and You have given me Your grace, even to this lowly person!

Tattuvarya attributed this near instantaneous enlightenment wholly to the power and grace of his Guru,
rather than to any intrinsic merit, maturity or worthiness:

It is possible to stop the wind.  It is possible to flex stone.  But what can be done with our furious mind?
How marvelous is our Guru, he who granted that this mind should be totally transformed into the Self!
My tongue, repeat this without ever forgetting.

When my Lord, who took me over by bestowing his lotus feet, glances with his look of grace, the darkness
in the heart vanishes.  All things become completely clear and transform into Sivam.  All the sastras are
seen to point towards reality.

Most glorious Lord, if you had not looked upon me with your eye of divine grace, how could I, your
devotee, and the mind that inquired, experience the light that shines as the flourishing world, as many,
as Jnana, and as one?

To destroy me, you gave me one look in which there was not looking.  You uprooted the ignorance
of 'I' and 'mine'.  You brought to an end all the future births of this cruel one.  O Lord, am I fit for
the grace that you bestowed on me?

(Venba Antadi - Verses 12,14,60 and 69).

On some of these trips Mastan would somehow find out in advance where we were going. We would
arrive at a town, Polur for example, and find him waiting for us. Once he had discovered our whereabouts,
he would make us sit while he went out begging for us.  We did not want to be served in this way, but
Mastan was very insistent. He told us on these occasions that he was 'the devotee of devotees', a role
and a title that he took on himself.

He would say, 'I want to serve the devotees of Bhagavan.  You must stay here while I find food for you.

Mastan would generally return with a huge amount of food, far more than we could possibly eat.  After
we had eaten as much as we could, we would share the leftovers with any local people who lived nearby.
If we were living in caves or other out of the way places, we would give the left overs to monkeys.

As he fed us Mastan would make one persistent request:

'Please tell me some stories about the glory of our Master.  Tell me everything He has said during the time
I was not with Him.  To me, every word  Bhagavan speaks is holy.  The words that come out of His holy
mouth are so powerful, merely listening to them can give liberation to ripe souls.

47.  The attitude of finding faults with others and other faiths should be nipped in the bud.  Even an
inadvertently permitted lenience in this matter shall cause one's spiritual accomplishment to suffer.
Just as a dash of salt can wreck a whole of milk, so does the scum of intolerance bring havoc to the
aspirant.  Consequently, one loses judgement in matters of action, inaction and non action.

48. If righteous actions are the limbs and their performer the body, it goes without saying that actions
determines the wholeness of the body.  And what is the body?  The whole world! To see the body and
its duties as unrelated is the crux of ignorance, say the wise.  Calm and cool perseverance in matters
of social order and justice must be observed.  Contrariwise attitudes bring only infamy.  Glory or notoriety
results from the motive behind the method of one's actions. All the sacred works have comprehensively
presented these matters.  Strict adherence, with true faith and utmost loyalty, to these commandments
is required.  Discipline at the level of the individual shall echo in the whole society.

49. Sastras sometimes resort to exemplary parables to explain certain cryptic aphorisms of the Vedas.
These by their own virtue cannot stand as standards for a person's deportment but must be understood
in the proper context of their Vedic moorings.  Just as the absence of sunrise is catastrophical to life,
these misunderstandings can lead to dire consequences.

50. The cause and effect principle is too well tested and standardized.  It is wise to fit into this frame
while in the world.  Intelligence should be cultivated based on a neatly worked our balance between the
above principle and the subtle and inexpressible principle.  Any incongruities thereof shall be settled
by Siva Himself.  Objects acquire differing degrees of significance depending on their placement in the
scheme of things  That is to say, their values are not intrinsic.  This knowledge helps to overcome
attachment or hatred to things -- no mean achievement on the spiritual path!

Arunachala Siva.

136.  The argument, 'The mind is small and the world is vast.  How can it be within the mind?' is
also mistaken. It has been taught by the Sages that it is the mind that is vast - not the world.

137.  The mind is vaster that even the sky, and in it are the five materials of creation, the outer
space (sky) and the rest. Consciousness, in its motionless state is Brahman; the same when moving
is mind;  thus it has been made clear by Bhagavan Sri Ramana, that the mind is of the nature of the
Brahman.

138. 'If you doubt whether or not the world existed during your sleep, than ask those that did not sleep
(during the time you slept), and know from their words that the world existed continuously without break.'

139.  This argument is put forward by the Ignorant, only by taking as proved the truth of their main
contention; for the men, that slept not, are part and parcel of the world under inquiry.

140. We see this men, that slept not, only after we awake, not in our sleep! (and) no separate proof is
offered to prove the reality of these men that did not sleep.

141.  Even  those that remained awake (while we slept) know the world only by mind and not otherwise.
Hence for all alike, the world is only mental, in waking,  as in dream.

As she thus prayed, by the grace of the Lord-Dancer
Up-borne by a supernal consciousness, she who was to get
What she prayed for, shook away all her flesh where
Abode beauty, and stood a skeletal being --,
The form of the hallowed ghost --, hailed by
Heaven, earth and all.

"So, this is his persuasion; oh Lord, rid me of this
Burden of flesh poised in beauty and hitherto borne
For his sake; fittingly bestow on me Your slave,
The form of a ghost to hail You in Your world." Thus she prayed
And thus she hailed the feet of the Supreme One.

When thus he spake, the confounded kinsfolk exclaimed:
"What may this be?" Hearkening to the merchant's words,
She of fragrant locks, hailed the feet of the Lord
Of matted hair, decked with resounding anklets;
Then, she spake from her inmost consciousness
Welling up from her inner vision into which merged
Her mind and all.
