நஞ்சம் உண்டவர் கோயிலில்
   நங்கையார் இருந்தார்
செஞ்சொல் நான்மறைத் திருநீல

Her heart was with fear fraught;
She dared not go near her husband;
She abode within the Temple of the Lord who ate the poison;
Tiruneelanakkar versed in the well-worded Vedas
Slept that night on the soft cotton mattress.

Verse 16:

It was evening and the sun sank
Behind the western mountain;
The wife stepped aside as commanded;
He performed the expiatory rites
And completed the pooja.
Then the servitor of the Lord of the matted hair
Fared forth and entered his protected house.

The wife did so as her heart was sorely agitated.
When the Brahmin whose tapas would quell bondage,

"What is it, oh senseless one, you have done?"
(Thus questioned) she said: "As the white spider
Fell on Him, I blew it away."

Once, the secretary of the Governor of Pondycherry came with his staff to have darshan of
Bhagavan Ramana.  He had brought a large paper with a lot of questions for clarification.
He submitted the paper to Bhagavan Ramana. The questions were in French and
were quite complicated.  Bhagavan Ramana asked me (Balarama Reddiar) to translate them
into English and tell Him.  I myself found it difficult to translate even though I know French.

Bhagavan Ramana, looked at me and understood my predicament. He then said:
"Alright, give me the substance, and that will do."

Then with hesitation, I told Bhagavan Ramana about the import of the questions and added
that the gentleman wants the answers not merely in words but also as EXPERIENTIAL.

Bhagavan after a second, gazed at the questioner.  About thirty seconds passed.

The gentleman started shivering and shaking and his eyes were shedding tears copiously.
He then said in a nervous tone: "Bhagavan!  Not now.  Not now."

Making the jackals into horses
You made all magic
And turned the entire Madurai,
of the King of South, go in frenzy.
O the Lord of Tiruperundurai!
O the Rare Substance, the remover of sins.
O the floods of Pandya country.
O the Effulgence, rare to witness!
I do not know what to do.

Himavan is the king of Himachala and his wife is Mena Devi. Their only darling daughter is Uma.
Once Brahma and Vishnu came to Himavan and told him to give his daughter in wedding
to Siva.  Siva came to see Uma and was happy and indicated his liking to marry Uma.  Himavan
became thoughtful.  This guy has not mother and father.  And his caste is not even known to us.
We do not know his gothra, lineage.  How can we give our daughter?  Mena Devi said:  It does not
matter.  If he has no mother and father, it is in a way good, for Uma will not suffer at the hands of
a mother in law or a sister in law!

The wedding took place in a grand manner.  Kubera came as the best-man for Siva.  Brahma and
Saraswati, and Vishnu and Lakshmi attended the wedding and gave the couple a lot of costly
gifts. Finally Siva took leave and left with Uma.  He said that they are going for honey-moon to
Tiruvannamalai.  "It is a very cool place here.  Annamalai is quite hot.  So, for a change, we propose
to go to Tiruvannamalai for honey-moon.

Himavan exclaimed:  "Oh!  To Annamalai?"

Siva said:  "Yes, to Annamalai.  I own that Hill."

Himavan became very happy.  O, our son-in-law is also the owner of a Hill.  Then, I should say that
he belongs to our caste! He and Mena Devi happily saw the couple off to Tiruvannamalai!

One girl to another:-

His temple is the cremation ground!
He wears the tiger skin as a nice apparel.
He has no mother, no father, He is all alone...
(What is the glory of your Siva?)

The other girl answers:

What if, He has no mother or father.
What if, He is all alone, a destitute.
You don't know His valor, if He gets angry,
All the worlds will burn to gravel and dust!

Verse  30:

O Mother Abhirami!  My dear Uma.  You have saved me from doing sins.  Even if I now do sins and then
fall into the mid ocean, it is Your duty to save me and bring me to the shore.  If You say that 'You cannot
bring me up' it is not good.  Only Your gracious mind should bring me ashore, (That is  taking me out of
this worldly sea of relationship and love to the family) and bring me ashore to Liberation. O Mother,
You are One and the Many!

Bhagavan's comment on this verse was:

I had no cloth spread on the floor in earlier days.  I used to sit on the floor and lie on the ground.
That is freedom.  This sofa is a bondage. It is a gaol for me. I am not allowed to sit anywhere and how
I please.  Is it not bondage? One must be free to do as one pleases, and should not be served by others.

'No want' is the greatest bliss.  It can be realized only be experience.  Even an emperor is no match for
a man with no want.  The emperor has got vassals under him.  But the other man is not aware of anyone
beside the Self.  Which is better?

The poem continues:

Our reward was to be reviled by all.
Our reward was that fear of this world, and the next died away.
Our reward  was to be crowned by the lotus feet of the Virtuous One - the Guru.
My dear companion, this life is the life bestowed by our Guru.   (3)

Our reward was the preeminent wealth that is freedom from desire.
Our reward was that the disease called 'desire'  was torn out by the roots.
Our reward was the love in which we melted, crying, 'Lord!'
Ah, my dear companion, tell me, what tapas did I perform for this.  (4)

There is an indirect reference in the first line to Tirukkural 363:  'There is no preeminent wealth in this
world like freedom from desire.  Even in the next, there is nothing to compare it.'

Arunachala Siva.

176.  The eternal, unchanging, ever shining Self persists continuously as the Real through all the varying
states. Superimposed on Him, the Substratum, does the whole world shine.

177.  It is by borrowing the reality of this Reality, which is Perfect Consciousness, that the world and the
mind appear as real to all those whose minds are deluded, due to their ignorance of their own selves.

178.  Here is the utterance of the Most Holy One -'The Brahman, which is only One, Itself shines inside
the (in the Heart) of all creatures as the Real Self in the form, 'I','I'; there is no other Self.'

179.  He also said:  This same is the meaning of the utterance of the famous Heavenly Voice which told
Moses, 'My real nature is just the Consciousness, 'I AM'.

180.  The sages, becoming aware of Him, who is Brahman, shining in the Supreme State, as the Real
Self, are ever contented as if they had had all their desires fulfilled simultaneously.

181.  This Pure Consciousness, which is the Real Self,  appears to him that knows not Himself, as
the world.  This misunderstanding of the true nature of the Real Self is rooted in the ignorance of one's
own Self.
