672.  Thus it has been shown by the Most Holy One that the Sage in the Natural Samadh has
no activity.  But through by Nature the Sage is no actor, yet He is also a great actor, without
being attached (or bound).

673. What is called association with the Holy is the association with a sage.  The term 'Sat' means
the Brahman, and the Sage is identical with That.

674.  It must not b e doubted, 'Since all alike are Brahman, what is there special in the Sage?'.
In others the Real, (Brahman) is eclipsed by the ego, but in the Sage, the Brahman shines in its
fullest Effulgence.

675.  Being associated with the Sage, the aspirant is freed from all attachments, he is freed from
delusion and thereby becomes one with the Move-less Consciousness which is the Brahman.

676. That Supreme State, which will be attained by the Quest of one's own Self, which automatically
comes to be made by the power of association with the Holy One, cannot be won by acquiring theoretical
knowledge from books, by listening to discourses by learned men etc., nor by any other means.

677.  If an aspirant associates with a Sage, why should he practice the disciplinary courses of action
like other men?  If the cool south wind blows, why should one take up a fan.

Verse 691:

தேவியார் தம்மை நோக்கித்
    தென்னவன் கூறு கின்றான்
காவிநீள் கண்ணி னாய்கேள்
    காவிரி நாட்டின் மன்னும்
தாவில்சீர்க் கழும லத்தான்
    சங்கர னருள்பெற் றிங்கு
மேவினான் அடிகள் மாரை
    வாதினில் வெல்ல என்று.

Addressing his queen the Pandya said:
"O you of long eyes, lily-like! Listen! he of ever-during,
Flawless and glorious Kazhumalam in the land
Of the Kaveri, blessed with the grace of Sankara,
Has come to vanquish our gurus in disputation."

Verse 690:

மன்னவன் உரைப்ப தின்றி
    இருக்கமா தேவி யார்தாம்
என்னுயிர்க் குயிராய் உள்ள
    இறைவநீ உற்ற தென்னோ
முன்னுள மகிழ்ச்சி இன்றி
    முகம்புலர்ந் திருந்தாய் இன்று
பன்னிய உள்ளத் தெய்தும்
    பருவரல் அருள்செய் என்றார்.

The great consort addressed the king grown taciturn:
"O lord who is the life of my life, what has befallen you?
You are bereft of your former joy; your visage has
Wilted; pray, tell me of the sorrow abiding in your bosom."

Verse 689:

ஆவதொன் றிதுவே யாகில்
    அதனையே விரைந்து செய்யப்
போவதென் றவரைப் போக்கிப்
    பொய்ப்பொரு ளாகக்கொண்டான்
யாவது உரையா டாதே
    எண்ணத்திற் கவலை யோடும்
பூவணை அமளி புக்கான்
    பொங்கெழில் தேவி சேர்ந்தாள்.

"If this is the thing to be done, then hasten away to do this."
The king so spoke and gave them leave to depart; the king
Who (mistook) falsity for truth, was struck with grief
And in silence he came to his bed damasked with flowers;
Thither came his consort of swelling pulchritude.

Verse 688:

வந்த அந்தணன் தன்னைநாம்
    வலிசெய்து போக்கும்
சிந்தை யன்றிஅச் சிறுமறை
    யோனுறை மடத்தில்
வெந்த ழற்பட விஞ்சைமந்
    திரத்தொழில் விளைத்தால்
இந்த மாநகர் இடத்திரான்
    ஏகும்என் றிசைத்தார்.

"Let us not entertain in our mind any forcible expulsion
Of the Brahmin who had arrived here; if we can set
Fire to the Matam where the Brahmin boy abides
By incantation of wondrous mantras, he will not tarry
In this goodly city; he will depart." Thus they spoke.

Verse 687:

மற்ற மாமறை மைந்தன்இம்
    மருங்கணைந் தானேல்
உற்ற செய்தொழில் யாதுசெய்
    கோம்என உரைப்பச்
செற்ற மீக்கொண்ட சிந்தையும்
    செய்கையும் உடையோர்
கொற்ற மன்னவன் மொழிக்கெதிர்
    குறித்துரை செய்வார்.

"If indeed the child of the great Vedas hath come here,
Tell me, what is it that will be meet for us to do?"
When they heard the scepterd king speak thus, they whose
Words and deeds were replete with swelling resentment
Spoke out their pre-conceived ruse, thus:

Of the munificent patron of Sanbai girt with

மாலை வெண்குடை வளவர்சோ
    ணாட்டுவண் புகலிச்
சூல பாணிபால் ஞானம்பெற்
    றானென்று சுருதிப்
பாலன் அன்பர்தங் குழாத்தொடும்
    பனிமுத்தின் சிவிகை
மேல ணைந்தனன் எங்களை
    வாதினில் வெல்ல.

"He is come from bountiful Pukali of the Chozha king
Endowed with
(Aatthi) garland and white parasol;
He hath been blessed with wisdom by the wielder
Of the Trident; riding the palanquin inlaid
With cool pearls and encircled by his retinue,
This boy is here come to vanquish us in disputation."

Verse 684:

என்று கூறலும் கேட்டுமுட்
    டியானும்என் றியம்பி
நன்று நல்லறம் புரிந்தவா
    நானென்று நகுவான்
கன்றும் உள்ளத்த னாகிஅக்
    கண்ணுதல் அடியார்
இன்றுஇம் மாநகர் அணைந்ததென்
    அவர்கள்யார் என்றான்.

Hearing this, the king said: "Lo, I am afflicted
With Kettu Muttu.*" Then he laughed derisively
Saying: "O the piety that I have wrought!"
Then with a mind brooding vengeance, he questioned them
Thus: "Wherefore have the servitors of the brow-eyed
Lord, come to this great city? Who are they?"

(*means that if a Jaina (here the king) heard about a Saiva, he committed a sin for having heard about him.)

Verse 683:

ஆவ தேல்நுமக் கடுத்தது
    கூறுவீர் என்று
காவ லன்பரிந் துரைத்தலும்
    கார்அமண் கையர்
மாவ லாய்உன்றன் மதுரையிற்
    சைவவே தியர்தாம்
மேவ லால்இன்று கண்டுமுட்
    டியாமென்று விளம்ப.

"If so, speak out what befell you." Thus in sympathy
Spake the sovereign; then the dark Samanas said:
"O hero that rides the tusker, as we have beheld
In your Madurai, Saiva Brahmins we are afflicted
With Kandu Muttu.*

(* means that Samanas used to say that if they see a Saiva, it is a sin for them for having seen him.)

Verse  682:

புக்க போதவர் அழிவுறு
    மனத்திடைப் புலர்ச்சி
மிக்க தன்மையை வேந்தனும்
    கண்டெதிர் வினவி
ஒக்க நீர்திரண் டணைவதற்
    குற்றதென் என்னத்
தக்க தல்லதீங் கடுத்தது
    சாற்றுதற் கென்றார்.

Even as they entered, the king beheld
The excessive misery bred by their broken hearts;
So he questioned them thus; "What may the reason be
For your coming here in your strength?" They answered
Him thus: "Oh it is evil, evil unspeakable!"

Verse  2:

புகவே வேண்டா புலன்களில்நீர்
    புயங்கப் பெருமான் பூங்கழல்கள்
மிகவே நினைமின் மிக்கவெல்லாம்
    வேண்டா போக விடுமின்கள்
நகவே ஞாலத் துள்புகுந்து
    நாயே அனைய நமையாண்ட
தகவே யுடையான் தனைச்சாரத்
    தளரா திருப்பார் தாந்தாமே.

May You not abide in your sense-instruments.
the jewels of our God are serpents.
So think on His flower-soft and ankleted feet that they Should solely,
wholly and exclusively occupy your thought.
Ignore all else.
Suffer them to leave you.
He came to earth in all splendor;
such is His Greatness,
that He ruled us who are like dogs.
They alone are masters of their selves,
who are linked to Him and it is these who will never flag.

Yaahitrai Pathu - Decad on Yatra (Journey) to Siva Loka (Moksha):

Verse  1:

பூவார் சென்னி மன்னனெம்
    புயங்கப் பெருமான் சிறியோமை
ஓவா துள்ளம் கலந்துணர்வாய்
    உருக்கும் வெள்ளக் கருணையினால்
ஆவா என்னப் பட்டன்பாய்
    ஆட்பட்டீர்வந் தொருப் படுமின்
போவோம் காலம் வந்ததுகாண்
    பொய்விட் டுடையான் கழல்புகவே.

The lower wreaths bedeck the crown of our sovereign God whose jewels are serpents;
He has,
with interruption none,
Pervaded our bosoms  the little ones`.
Siva-consciousness melts us.
Swayed by His flood of mercy,
Ye that have been,
in love,
come and consent to fore-gather concordantly.
Giving up all falsity,
And to gain the ankleted feet of the Lord-Owner,
Time is come.
let us go.

Today is the Punarvasu day of the Tamizh month of Ashada.  Punarvasu is the birth star of Sri
Bhagavan.  Every Punarvasu star day, there will be good abhikshekam, alankaram, and arti
for Sri Ramaneswara Mahalingm.

There will be such celebrations today, followed by good lunch with sweets.  The crowds will be
quite large.

Muruganar has composed a poem called Punarvasu VaNNam (the glory of punarvasu) and this can be seen in Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai.

I shall give in this context, some translations from Guru Vachaka Kovai of Muruganar.

Destruction of Mind:

913. Unsteady and wavering minds find only
        Failure and frustration always.

914. The restless mind moves with a speed
        That shames the God of Wind . To starve it,
        So that it, like a cripple, stays
        Totally immobile is to attain
        Actual Immortality.

915. It is true wisdom to pluck out
        Before they grow too strong the weeds
        Of lust and anger and greed, and keep
        The mind serene and self contained
        Like a vast ocean deep and calm
        Untroubled by a single ripple
        Raised by any wind.

918.  He who has vanquished thought, he only
         Sits like an emperor on the neck
         Of the  majestic elephant, Jnana,
         Know for certain that the mind's
         Movements alone give rise to birth
         And every cruel pain and sorrow.

920.   Even as the ego does not die
          Unless the Self's  glance falls on it,
          The painful dream of this phenomenal
          World will never disappear
           Unless the mind meets glorious death.

Friday, January 1st 2010:  Arudra Darsanam / Bhagavan's Jayanti and New  Year.

I got up at my usual time. My legs felt no soreness and my body felt strong and refreshed.
I had my bath and wore a specially starched and ironed shirt and Veshti and walked over to Bhagavan's
Samadhi Hall, where the parayanams had already begun.   The Lingam was decorated in a very grand
manner with all the flowers and garments.  But more than that was a subtle sense of tremendous majesty
that radiated from the Samadhi and was reflected in every picture of Bhagavan. 

I stood in the breakfast line supremely happy.  In my fifty one years I have never attended any family
function of any kind where I had felt more at home, more comfortable and more belonged than on that
one morning at Sri Ramanasramam.

I was standing thus in line with joyous heart when suddenly I was gripped by a shaking chill.  I started
shivering violently and I struggled to control it so that people around me may not become alarmed.
One moment I was feeling totally healthy and vital and in the next instant I was in the grip of this strange
fever.  I continued to shiver all through breakfast and when I got up after the meal, my legs felt very weak.
I stumbled to my room and curled up on my bed in a fatal position as I continued to shiver.  I took some
medicine from my travel pack for the fever and slept very restlessly until 11 am.  Getting up I walked
over to the Asramam.  There I met Dr. Anand Ramanan who had arrived for the Jayanti a few days earlier.
He checked me out and onted that the lymph nodes (glands) in my neck were slightly swollen and felt
that I may be coming down with some viral fever. He prescribed some medicines for me.
