In ever-during Tiruvaanjiyam he hailed the Lord
Of triple eyes and blue throat, verily a rare gem;
He adored Him in Talayaalangkaadu of rich
And roaring waters and Peruvelur where
The Lord willingly abides, and hymned Him;
He came to peerless and glorious Saatthangkudi
And also to the Lord?s Tirukkaraveeram;
He hymned Him; then he hailed Vilamar where is enshrined
The Lord who is inaccessible to the rare Vedas
That for ever ply their quest after Him; impelled
By a desire to adore Tiruvaaroor, he moved into that town.

It rained; food-stuff increased; all lives stood
Cured of their distress; now came the time, when
By the Grace of Grace, all the world began to glow
In splendor; the godly child hailing the feet
Of the Lord of matted hair, sojourned there
For many a day; then blessed with the Lord's leave
And with the saintly tapaswi, the Sovereign of Speech
He fared forth to the shrines where Siva abides in joy,
And adored Him there and eventually arrived
At the hoary town Tiruvaanjiyam in the south.

On 17th February 1937, Mrs. Jinarasadasa asked Bhagavan Ramana:

Mrs. J:  But how did the ego arise?

Bhagavan:  Ego is non-existent, otherwise you would be two instead
of one -  you the ego and you the Self.  You are a single, indivisible
whole.  Enquire into yourself and the apparent ego and ignorance
will disappear.

Mrs. J:  Why then do we need to concentrate?

Bhagavan: Concentration, meditation and all spiritual practices are not performed with the
object of realizing the Self, because the Self is ever-present, but of realizing the non-existence
of ignorance.  Every man admits his own existence and does not need a mirror to prove it to him.
Existence is Awareness, which is the negation of ignorance.  Then why does a man suffer?
Because he imagines himself to be other than what he is in reality is, e.g., the body,
this, that and the other -- "I am Gopal, son of Parashuram, father of Natesan," etc., In reality
he is the intelligent "I-am" alone, stripped of qualities and super-impositions, of names and forms.
Does he see his body and all these qualities, shapes and colors in dreamless deep sleep?  Yet he
does not deny that he is then himself existing even without a body.  He must hold on to that existence,
that lone being - Kaivalya - even when he is in the waking state. The man of wisdom simply is.
"I-am-That-I-am" sums up the whole Truth.  The method is summed up by "Be still and know
that I am God."  What does stillness mean?  Cessation of thinking, which is the universe of forms,
colors, qualities, time, space, all concepts and precepts whatever.  *****

A visitor asked:

"If the ego or "I" be an illusion who then casts off the illusion?

Bhagavan:  The "I" casts off the illusion of "I" and yet remains as "I".  This appears to be a
paradox to you.  It is not so to the Jnani.  Take the case of the bhakta (devotee).  His "I" prays
to the Lord to unite it with Him, which is its surrender.  What remains as residuum after the
surrender, is the eternal "I", which is God the Absolute, Paramatman Himself.  What has happened
to the "I" which originally prayed?  Being unreal it simply vanished!

Only the Atma is the Truth.  The world, individual souls, personal gods are all imaginations.
Truth has to be investigated by the seeker only.  No books will help.  No Guru will help.  They will
at best show the Way.  You have to reach the Goal through that way, the way that you love most,
and reach the Goal.  Again, reaching the Goal does not bring about a halo around your face.
You are what you are, but in Peace, the Peace that passeth understanding.

Sunday, December 26th, 2009:

I woke up without the benefit of an alarm thanks to my body still remembering the circadian rhythms
of the western hemisphere.   I walked towards the Old Meditation Hall which curiously was radiant with
flood lights, a very unusual finding at this hour.  On entering I was surprised to see that three workers
were busy painting the walls and Bhagavan's couch had been moved to the middle of the room and
the wooden barriers that served as a cordon had been moved aside.  I realized that they were preparing
the room for Bhagavan's Jayanti barely six days away.

As I stood before Him, He smiled His welcome at this new accessibility. I moved forward and sat very close
to His couch delighted at this rare opportunity to have the 'sparshan' of the couch, which my Master
occupied for nearly three decades showering His Grace on prince and pauper alike.

The large picture frame of Him reclining with feet stretched down the length of the couch was lifelike above me
as I sat at His Feet. Time stood still as my heart relived this experience that it once had before the Master
in a different body, in a different lifetime.  Bhagavan has often said that the Guru's Glance (guru kataksham)
is like the grip of a tiger on the throat of its prey.  Once so held, no matter what the disciple may do,
however much he may struggle, despite all his failings he is never forsaken, and is eventually consumed
into the eternal state that is Kaivlayam.  Sitting at the feet of Bhagavan I felt with sureness that verily
I had no cause for fear having become captive of this Tiger.

Friday, December 25th, 2009:

I am woken up from my jet lagged slumber by my driver, who informs me that we have reached
Tiruvannamalai.  I glance at my watch. It is 5.30 pm.  Then the car passed beneath the wrought iron
arches and I found myself embraced by the shadow of the 400 year old iluppai tree of my spiritual home
away from the demons of such fears and declaring the eternal constancy of the silent welcome of my
Master. I walk into the great Hall to greet and acknowledge the smile and recognition and welcome
beaming from Bhagavan's picture before making my way to my assigned room in the Palakkottu section
of the Asramam.  It was with a sense of glad relief that I sank into my Asramam bed at 10 pm.

O Devi Abhirami! You are prayed to by three-eyed Siva, Vishnu and Brahma.  Those who surrendered
at Her Feet, shall not even desire Indra bhogam.  They will only love Her Feet, shall not desire even
the golden throne, and where the deva girls like Ramba dance.

7.  I am of the form that is denuded of everything.  I am the expanse of consciousness.  All is is verily
Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

8.  I am of the form of the fourth state of transcendence alone.  I am that alone which transcends the
fourth state.  All this is, indeed, the Supreme Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

9.  I am ever of the form of consciousness.  I am Existence Consciousness Bliss.  All this is, indeed, the
Supreme Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

10. I am of the form of Unitary nature. I am ever of the form of the immaculate.  All this is, indeed,
the Supreme Brahman. I am Brahman alone.

11.  I am the purity of knowledge alone. I am alone. I am the beloved. All this is, indeed, the Supreme
Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

12.  I am the unwavering alone.  I am of my own form alone.  All this is, indeed, the Supreme
Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

13.  I am ever of the form of Satsanga.  I am always the supernal.  All this is, indeed, the Supreme
Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

14.  I am ever of the form of singularity.  I am never the other than happiness.   All this is, indeed,
the Supreme Brahman.  I am Brahman alone.

591.  Therefore on the fall of the body His subtle body does not go forth, as in the case of the ignorant;
it goes back and merges into its cause, and nothing survives for giving forth.

592. The popular notion that there are many sages, is also true.  All differences belong to the world.
In the world-less state they do not exist.

593. He who says, 'I have today seen this Sage;  I shall see others also.'  does not know the true nature
of the sages, which is Reality Consciousness Bliss. This is what Bhagavan has told us on this point.

594. For him that knows not the Sage who is within himself, there appears many sages.  For him who
knows the One, who is his own Self, this plurality of sages is non existent.

595. The first Guru (Dakshinamurti), who taught those great Munis by Silence the Truth of His
Own Supreme State, and who afterwards appeared as the Great Guru, Sri Sankaracharya,
is Himself our Guru, Sri Ramana Bhagavan.

596.  Our Guru, Sri Ramana, tells us that the real Siddhi to be striven for is to be firmly established
in the Natural State of the Real Self who is Ever Present in the Heart; nothing else.

597.  The notion that the Self has to be won is untrue, because really He was never lost, from the
point of view of the Truth.  The Sages therefore say that the Real Self is ever present.

Those were coins of inestimable value; for getting fed
Innumerable devotees thronged to their Matams;
To the new comers and to the other, food was served
In joy; it suffered no deficit; thus Lord Siva
Who wears on His crest the crescent and the Ganga,
Graced them; the Prince of Sanbai of excelling glory
And Naavukkarasar provided
(for the devotees)
Mountains of nectarean food.

And sang the decade in which he invoked Him to set
At nought the difference, and grace him; with the coin
Thus blessed, his retinue moved out and presented it
To the money-changers cum merchants;
Beholding it they said: O great tapaswis! this coin
Is indeed good, very good; we will give you all you need.?
They gave them the needed provision; from that day
They fed the devotees sumptuously in the forenoon,
And flourished in devotion.

Tiru Jnaanasambandhar heard them and mused thus:
"Of the two coins granted to us by Lord Siva,
One suffers a discount and the other none at all;
Well, the reason is obvious; the coin received
By Tirunaavukkarasar, poised in great truth,
Is for the service he renders; I will sing the Great One
To grant me in days to come a coin of similar touch
And without difference." Thus he resolved in his mind.

When thus questioned by the chief of the sacred Brahmins,
The cooks of the holy Matam spake thus:
"We do not know; if with the coin received
From your Deity when the needed provision is sought
To be bought, the money-changers demand a discount;
They however willingly accept the coin of the great Muni--
Vaakeesar--, at par; this perhaps accounts for the delay."
