Verse  1071:

He had makara-toranas, beautiful bunches of areca-nuts
And severed banana-trees, peerless streamers
And garlands arranged in beauteous rows
And thus had the whole city with its long streets
Beautified with auspicious decorations;
It looked as though, the flawless, ethereal city itself
Had come down to the earth.

Arunachala Siva.

Among various human relations, the most intimate, sacred and deep rooted is the one with the mother.
While all other relations are characterized by an element of mutual expectation, the relationship with
mother is based on pure love and devoid of any expectation.  There is no parallel anywhere to the profundities
of mother's love.  Mother's love is limitless, sublime, unconditional, magnanimous and well enduring.
No words can give adequate expression to the overwhelming flow of love that springs from the heart of a mother. Her son or daughter would have risen high as a towering spiritual leader or as a universal Guru but that makes no difference for the free flow of love between the mother and daughter or son.  It is a divine
relation that cuts through all barriers.  It is unique and no other love can equal it, not even that of God.
Perhaps, that was why God Siva himself manifested as a mother to a daughter.  It is said that Lord
Siva cannot physically be present in a perceivable form 'as Himself' whenever and whatever His devotees
look for Him and that is the reason He manifested as a human mother to bestow His love and care to all
His devotees at all times. Because Lord Siva manifested as a mother, to take care of a pregnant daughter,
He came to be known as Thayumanavar or Mathrubuteswar (the Lord who became the Mother).  The legend
of Thayumana Swamy is a moving illustration of the motherly love and compassion bestowed by Lord
Siva on His devotees.

(This is according to the legend Ratnavati, a great female devotee of Lord Siva, who was pregnant
and as was customary, she returned to her mother's house situated north of Kaveri River for delivery.
One day, while her mother had gone to Tiruchirapalli, across the river, Ratnavati felt her labor
pains.  Alone at home she cried for help.  Soon her mother came and attended to her delivery. Actually
her real mother was stuck across due to the flood.  When the flood receded, she returned home and saw
the happy face of Ratnavati with her baby.  Pleasantly surprised, she asked her daughter who had helped
her for the delivery, 'You yourself came and helped!', said the daughter who had helped her in delivery,
'You yourself came and helped!', said the daughter.  But her mother said,  'I have only just returned!'
It then dawned on them that Lord Siva Himself had incarnated as her mother  (Thayum Anavar).
For Lord Siva, who has manifested in different forms at different times, perhaps this incarnation as
a mother truly reflects His divine qualities of love and compassion.  Lord Thayumanavar, continues to bless
His devotees from the Rock Fort Matrubhuteswarar temple complex constructed in the 6th century
at Tiruchirapalli.)

O Lord-God !
By causing every pore of hair sublimely supple,
You wrought of my base,
fleshly body a lofty golden temple;
making Yourself utterly simple,
You entered me and melted all my bones.
O flawless Gem !
O goodly Light !
You did away With my troubles,
my birth as well as death,
My bewilderment and all else that is cumbrous.
O Ecstasy !
I caught You and hold You in firm grip.
How can You move away at all from me?

Your love for me is far,
far superior to a mother's who automatically thinks and suckles her babe.
You melted my flesh  the sinner's;
You augmented my inner light;
You poured into my being the insatiable honey of bliss.
You roamed with me whenever I circum- migrated.
O Opulence !
O God Siva !
I followed You,
Caught You and hold You in firm grip.
How can You move away at all from me?

48. The notion of existence of mind is too unreal.  The gross body too is unreal.  The subtle body
too is unreal -= truly, very truly,. I say in the name of Siva.

49. Heaven and hell are unreal.  The pleasure thereof is unreal.  All grasping is unreal.  All
that is grasped is unreal.

50.  That which shines as the truth is unreal, yes untruth I say, in the name of Siva.  That which
is known as present is real.   That which is past is unreal.

51. That which is known as the future is verily unreal.    It is the truth the truth.  I say this in the name
of Siva.  The beginning is unreal, the middle is unreal, so is the end of this world unreal.

52.  Age is always unreal,  unreal indeed.   There is no doubt of this.  Knowledge is ever unreal,
and so are ignorance and the knowable.

53. The universe is always unreal.  The inert is always unreal. The seen is always unreal.  These
shine like the horns of a horse.

54.  Imagination is always unreal. The products of sheaths are unreal.  All mantras are unreal.
This is the truth, the truth. There is no doubt of this.

55.  Other than the Self there is no world.  There is nothing of this non self ever. Any of this other
than the Self is unreal.  There is no doubt that this is truth, the truth.

To them that informed him thus, he gave away
Garments, gold and coins; he grew
Ineffably happy; up to Tiruvotriyoor of the Lord who is
Crescent-crested he had an extensive Pandal erected
To walk there under, and had the whole length
Of it decked with canopy and arras.

While so, the servitors of that place, in loving words
Informed the greatly glorious and munificent merchant
Of the arrival of the Prince of Sanbai at Tiruvotriyur,
Of his adoration of the Lord in the company
Of the holy devotees and of his sojourn there.

Ritualistic ablutions and decking with garlands
And sandal-paste were done unto it daily
And without fail; cooked rice mixed with milk was
Offered to it; lamps burned during daytime also;
These and other auspicious acts were done daily
In a fitting manner, at which people wondered.

He had the run kept in the protected Kanni-maatam
Where she formerly abode; it was decked with jewels
Of gold and pearls and also with soft vestments.
On a fragrant quilt stuffed with the down of swan
And cotton, and under a decorated canopy, it was installed.

"As we have dedicated her to the godly child
We are not to be grieved by this incident."
Thus he resolved and was relieved of his misery;
After burning her body, he gathered the bones
And the ashes in a broad urn.

Witnessing this, Sivanesar of ever-during glory
Stood bewildered; yet it soon became clear to him
That he should burn her body, and after the pyre
Smoldered away, gather the bones and the ashes,
And preserve them until the advent of the lord
Of Kazhumalam girt with cloud-capped gardens.

For a period of three days following the proclamation
By beat of drum, from all quarters of the globe
And from royal courts, many, well-versed
In boundless learning, flocked thither and tried
Their flawless ways; as they could not effect
Any cure, they went away.

Sivanesar of sorely distressed mind, after a time,
Grew clarified; as there was nothing else for him to do,
He announced by beat of drum, thus:
"In this wide world whosoever he be, should he cure her
Of the venom, I will give away to him
All these heaps of endless riches."
