The nature of the mind is fluid and the art of meditation is to flow with it, but to mindful  of each thought as it arises.  Bhagavan wrote: 'Better than such broken thought (meditation) is its steady and continuous flow of oil or of a perennial stream.' (Upadesa Saram, verse 7).  The point of self inquiry is to develop consciousness so that we do not lose our center of gravity.  It is a question of poise.

Like the young Ajahn Chah we soon become baffled and disheartened if we rigidly follow every rule, instruction, advice, book, admonition, sloka, discussion, command, direction or stipulation.  The world is full of do's and don't's.  We would be driven mad if we followed them all. We would lose our balance and fall into one of those black holes of depression and despair.  One pointed awareness is like the light shine on a dark path to keep us safe.   The stronger the awareness the clearer our perception of what is the right action. Atma Vichara is our infallible tool.     

The so called spiritual world and this physical world are not in opposition, just as the physical body of a person and their spirit are not in conflict. If they are at war, then a person is torn apart by contradictory impulses unless they find the panacea of the Guru's grace.  The body and mind are in fact, complimentary aspects that aid each other.  They are instruments which help us understand by revealing to us the results of our impulses and actions.  A human birth is the result of great merit.  According to scripture, it is not easy obtain.

We train our bodies and minds through discipline and virtue and we eventually see that they are not enemies.  How often have we seen people who prosecute their bodies, thinking that the world is an illusion, a bondage, and the sooner one gets rid of it the better.  This negative type of self restraint is a death wish.  It is an unintelligent denial; it is ignorance.  We are issued with bodies at birth, is not perhaps to be expected that we take a slight bit of trouble to keep those bodies in reasonable condition?

Slow and steady are the operative words.  The characteristic of Bhagavan's teaching is that it is generally unhurried,  but once a step is taken we never fall back into a particular trap of malign, unconscious vasanas.

We should remember that Bhagavan said that we take one step towards the Guru,
the Guru will take nine steps towards us.  To take that one step requires the simple
quality of flexible restraint so that the mind is quiet and open to grace.

இந்தி ரன்றொழு நீலப் பர்ப்பதத்
தந்த மில்லியை யேத்து ஞானசம்
பந்தன் பாடல்கொண் டோதி வாழ்மினே.


Live happily chanting the verses which praise Siva, and who dwells in Neela Paruppatam, worshipped by Indra, and who dwells in Neela Paruppatam, worshipped by Indra, and who has no end composed by Jnana Sambandhan, who is a native of Sirkazhi, surrounded by gardens of fragrance.

What is the reason for the unfortunate low Jains, Buddhists who have no eminence and who have been given up as lost for not thinking about the fame of the first cause who dwells in Indra Neela Parupptam, being the embodiment of good knowledge?

பூவி னானொடு மாலும் போற்றுறும்
தேவ னிந்திர நீலப் பர்ப் பதம்
பாவி யாவெழு வாரைத் தம்வினை
கோவி யாவருங் கொல்லுங் கூற்றமே.


The god of death will kill those who rise without meditating on Indra Neela Parupptam, of the god who is praised by Brahma in the lotus flower and Vishnu! Their acts will reach them getting angry.

எடுத்த வல்லரக் கன்க ரம்புயம்
அடர்த்த தோர்விர லானவ னையாட்
படுத்த னிந்திர நீலப் பர்ப்பதம்
முடித்த லம்முற முயலு மின்பமே.

Siva pressed down with a single toe the hands and shoulders of the strong demoṉ, who lifted the mountain, Kailash and then accepted him on his protege.
(People of this world!) try to worship his Indra Neela Parupptam by bowing your heads; You will obtain happiness.

பொடிகொள் மேனியிற் பூண்ட பாம்பினர்
அடிகள் இந்திர நீலப் பர்ப்பதம்
உடைய வாண ருகந்த கொள்கையே.


Siva has a flag on which the form of a bull is drawn.  He kicked the god of death.
He adorns his body on which the sacred ash is smeared, with cobra these are the great notions the god, who always stays in Indra Neela Parupptam.

துண்ணி லாவுறு மொருவ னல்லனே.


Siva wears on his matted locks a white crescent moon that gives light.
He discharged an arrow from the bow on the forts of the enemies.
Is he not the god who has no equal and who remain permanently in the eminent Indra Neela Paruapadam?

தருவி சூடிடு மடிகள் வண்ணமே.

Siva who has the nature of removing the acts of those who praise him, having as one half a young lady who is united with him, one who begs alms.
That is the nature of the god who wears the mountain streams in Indra Neela Parupptam.

We shall praise Indira Neela Paruppatam of our Siva who is impartial and whose fame has filled the country with shyness to be of good character. Our acts will perish, good things will come to us of their accord.

People of this world! Wearing a crescent moon that neither waxes wanes,
the Lord who pervades everywhere and who has on his head big Koṉṟai flowers on which the bees which hover them hum loudly.  Save yourselves by praising Siva who dwells in Indra Neela Paruppatam.

Sitting majestically to be praised by the rejoicing Bhutas, holding in his palms a big shining battle-axe, to meditate on the feet of Siva who moved about in Indra Neelap Paruppatam which is eternal, that meditation will bestow all good things.

Restraint is a powerful tool that helps us see clearly. Self control is not a punishment
nor a killjoy attitude that dislikes anything pleasurable on principle on principle.  It is not avoidance; it is a clear perception of the consequences of what we may be able to do.
When we are in doubt we exercise restraint, but this does not mean we remain dense,
unfeeling and lifeless. Self restraint does not mean we shut our eyes, block our ears, cease talking and stop eating. Quite contrary, we become more sensitive and do what is appropriate.

Anyone who has driven a car can remember getting behind  the wheel for the first time and thinking that the car is driving them!  We tend to panic and apply the brakes with abrupt force.  With practice we learn to control and restraint until we are charge, and then become the one who drives, rather than a helpless passenger. We apply the brake smoothly so that the car slows down in a continuous flow.

Have you ever noticed that Bhagavan slowly applies the necessary medicine to us so much that we rarely notice it until afterwards when the 'treatment' is successful and we look back and see how much we have changed for the good and are no longer in the grip or compulsive desire or the victim of an irrational, obsessive fear?

The Buddha compared meditation to the tuning of a musical instrument. When we play it or when we exercise our mind, should we rigidly control our technique or should we indulge and let go?  The answer is neither. When we tune a stringed instrument, we neither bind the strings too tightly nor do we allow them to be too loose. It is by precise restraint that we learn to develop our awareness of the consequences.

One should never lose the commitment to continue on the path, even if a traumatic incident occurs, nor should one be too jubilant or indulge in smug self satisfaction
because of a fortuitous event, or because something long desired suddenly, smoothly
and effortlessly turns out right.  We will inevitably experience joys and effortlessly turns out right. We will inevitably experience joys and defeats.  In a sense, our bitter setbacks are our best teachers for through them we have no choice but to mature and grow stronger in our inner awareness of what is right and wrong.

How grateful we should be to given this awareness.  This may be the first step towards detachment.  For it will save us a great deal of unnecessary suffering and despair.

It is important to remember that once we are on this path guided by Bhagavan the rules and priorities change. Instead of acquisition, we learn to let go; instead of trying
to control, we learn to accept and flow with circumstances; instead of complaining
if misfortune hits us, we see that it is an opportunity to see our ignorance and learn
discrimination and detachment.

When we look back on our lives there are moments when what at that time appeared to be a disaster, with hindsight , we see was the best thing that could have happened to us, however shocking it may have been. There is a Jewish saying, 'And that is also
for good'. (Moris Alan, Everyday Holiness, The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar,
Trumpter, Boston, 2008).

Chapter 30:

1. Ribhu: I shall speak about the supreme that is Brahman, along with the renunciation
of the world. By one who hears it even once the supreme Brahman is attained.

2. Brahman is supported by Brahman alone, attributeless, ever blemishless, permanent,
poised and absolute.  There is nothing apart from Brahman.

3. I am truth - the joy of beyond, pure, eternal, and taintless.  All is, indeed, only Brahman. That Brahman am I. There is no doubt of this.

4. I am the singular undivided essence, ever perfect in every way.  Brahman is everything, nothing else is. All is Brahman.  There is no doubt of this.

5. I am the unitary self always.  All is eternally Brahman.  I am of the form of bliss alone.  Nothing else is permanent. 

6. I am of the nature of pure bliss.  I am the pure wisdom of the self.  I am of a uniform nature.  I am not bereft of the unitary existence.

7. I am of the pure internal knowledge. I alone am the refuge. All is indeed only Brahman.  There is no doubt of this.  I am that Brahman. Of this there can be no doubt.

8.I am devoid of multiple themes. Oneness too does not exist. All is indeed, Brahman.
There is no doubt of this.  I am that Brahman.  Of this there can be no question.

9. I am of all possible forms, devoid of even the term 'all'.  All is indeed, Brahman.
There is no doubt of this.  I am that Brahman. Of this there can be no question.

10.  I am of the form of blemishless knowledge. Even 'I' does not exist. I am of the nature of the pure Brahman, bereft of the word 'pure'.
