அழன்மல்கு மங்கையில் ஏந்திப்பூத மவைபாடச்
சுழன்மல்கு மாடலீர் சுடுகாடல்லாற் கருதாதீர்
எழின்மல்கு நான்மறையோர் முறையாலேத்த விடைமருதில்
பொழில்மல்கு கோயிலே கோயிலாகப் பொலிந்தீரே.

Holding fire in the palm of increasing beauty, when the Bhutas are singing, you perform a dance of increasing whirling you do not consider any other place than the cremation ground as your place. The beautiful Brahmins who have learnt the four Vēdas to worship you in the proper manner. You were shining in the temple which has flourishing gardens in Idai Marutu, as the temple fitting your greatness.

நீரார்ந்த செஞ்சடையீர் நெற்றித்திருக்கண் நிகழ்வித்தீர்
போரார்ந்த வெண்மழுவொன் றுடையீர் பூதம்பாடலீர்
ஏரார்ந்த மேகலையாள் பாகங்கொண்டீ ரிடைமருதில்
சீரார்ந்த கோயிலே கோயிலாகச் சேர்ந்தீரே.

You have  red matted locks, which is full of water of the Ganga.
You created the frontal eye. You have a white battle-axe which is well used in warfare. You have Bhutas which sing, you had on one half a lady wearing a jeweled girdle of 7 or 8 strands of exquisite beauty. You dwelt in the temple with great distinction as the temple fitting your greatness.

Verse 1:

பொங்குநூன் மார்பினீர் பூதப்படையீர் பூங்கங்கை
தங்குசெஞ் சடையினீர் சாமவேத மோதினீர்
எங்குமெழிலார் மறையோர்கண் முறையாலேத்த விடைமருதில்
மங்குல்தோய் கோயிலே கோயிலாக மகிழ்ந்தீரே.

You have on your chest a bright and attractive sacred thread.
have an army of Bhutas.
have  red matted locks, on which the shining Ganga stays.
You chanted Sāma Vēdam.
The beautiful Brahmins to worship you in the proper manner everywhere.
You rejoiced in dwelling in the temple in Idai Marutu which touches the clouds, as the fitting temple for you.

Tiru Jnana Sambandhar says in his first Padigam:

தோடுடையசெவி யன்விடையேறியோர் தூவெண்மதிசூடிக்
காடுடையசுட லைப்பொடிபூசியென் னுள்ளங்கவர்கள்வன்
ஏடுடையமல ரான்முனை நாட்பணிந் தேத்தவருள்செய்த
பீடுடையபிர மாபுரமேவிய பெம்மானிவனன்றே.


The Lord has an ear on which a lady's ear-jewel is worn.
He rides on a bull. He having worn a spotlessly pure white crescent moon of a single phase, has  smeared himself with the ash in the cremation ground which has the nature of a forest. The thief who has captivated my mind. This person is really the great one who resides gladly in Sirkazhi, possessing greatness, This is where the Lord bestowed his grace on Brahma, who is seated in a (lotus) flower having petals, who bowed to him and worshiped him, in the distant past.

Here the saint poet says that Siva has stolen his heart. He is staying in the Heart.
If that be the case, where is the question of prayer to Him?  The job is complete
with the Lord staying in the Heart.  That is Mukti. That is the purpose of life.  So,
where is the question of prayers?

Thus the saint poet says that with the Lord staying in the Heart, the Liberation is
achieved which is the purpose of life.

Notes: [Sirkazhi has twelve name of which Piramapuram is one; as Brahma worshiped the Lord, with his consort, the goddess of learning it got the name of Piramapuram.]
[Piramāpuram: the long letter is used to suit the meter.
The fact that Brahma worshiped the Lord in Sirkazhi is mentioned in other decades of Tiru Jnana Sambandhar. [Many scholars have written elaborate commentaries on this one stanza. The circumstances in which this Padigam was sung is described in detail in Periya Purāṇam, Tiru Jnana Sambandhar Purāṇam, verses 53-80].

41.  The confidential, the mantra, the quality, the scripture, the truth, he ear, the body,
death, birth, effect, cause, the sanctified, the auspicious,

42. lust and anger, covetousness and delusion, pride, jealousy, the defect of duality,
fear, sorrow -- all are indeed non existent, always.

43. 'This' is verily naught, indeed naught. All pleasures are non existent. The reflection
'this is Brahman', the contemplation 'I am Brahman',

44. The reflection 'I am Brahman', the knowledge 'you are Brahman, the imperishable', the reality of Brahman is wisdom.  The concept of the unreal can never cause any affliction.

45.  The self is verily supreme, the one and the only. Being one is to be devoid of burden.  All is Brahman, always Brahman.  That Brahman am I.  There is no doubt of this.

46.  The form of the individual self the concept of individual self and the words 'the individual self' - the triad of these are naught.  The form of Isvara, the universal self,
the concept of Isvara, the word Isvara - are but fanciful.

47.  There are no letters, nor the entire, no word, nothing said, nor any subject; not even an iota of the heart, mantra, tantra, mind or intellect.

48. There is none who is dull, wise, with discrimination or even pure.  Determination, tara the Pranava (Omkara), this Self, Guru and disciple,

49. quiescence, stillness, supreme tranquility, silence, or the concept of silence, the radiating, the discrimination between the self and the non self,

50.  the yoga of meditation, the Raja Yoga, the eight limbed Yoga, -- all are Brahman.
There is no doubt of this.  That Brahman am I.  There is no uncertainty about this.

Each time we open a page of His writing, verses or songs, there is an opportunity
for affirmation.  We believe that by reading or chanting we engage with the same truth
He endowed on those who surrounded Him in the days of His physical presence.  But words of Bhagavan wrote or said are not dead if we allow them to enter us.  With our
breath we make sounds that create anew the truths He revealed.  With our intention we make it fresh in the heart the words which empower us. It does not matter how many explanations, commentaries, anecdotes are available, they count for nothing if we fail to capture their intent and spirit.

What we are doing in fact is engaging in an inner adventure of wonder and participation.  By this act of remembrance we are not repeating by mindless rote but are giving birth in ourselves to a sense of wonder, joy and a profound mystery.  Because in the end, we do not find the 'answer' but rather, engage in a perpetual mystery. Those who think there is a magic pill that solves all our misery are mistaken.
There is however a growing inner confidence that Bhagavan's Grace will carry us forward though we are blind to the next step.  We learn to trust that all will be well.
Did He not say that if we take but one step then, He will take the other nine?

Is Bhagavan a person?  We would like to think so but tremble when we pull aside the veil that separates us from the fire of his eyes which see us all clearly.

It is said that home is where our heart is.  We expect home to be where everything is understandable and in its place.  For many of us, home is Arunachala and the Asramam, for there there is in that Hill and collection of buildings a sense of belonging we cannot fully articulate.  We feel that there is where we should be.  But unfortunately, more often than not, it is impossible for most of us to actually remain there due to family obligations, employment commitments, health considerations or even the fact that the very air we breathe is fighting us as though in summer one were being melted into an oven.  We envy those who have the good fortune tor reside there.  Many feel that being at Arunachala would be the ideal solution for their restlessness, for everything seems to stop in that sacred atmosphere and rest in a sense of harmony.  Our worries, our fears, our desires, pale in significance in the presence of that power.  We dream of being at Arunachala where everything will be perfect.

This is not so.  Firstly, Tiruvannamalai is far from an idyllic place to live for reasons anyone who has stayed for any length of time will whatever from it may assume, we are because that is the best place to learn.  Once we have established that Arunachala is our Sthala, our place, our home, it is our responsibility to keep it spotless. And by that, one means the heart and mind.  We are no longer careless tourists.

சிந்தையே கோயில் கொண்டஎம் பெருமான்
    திருப்பெருந் துறையுறை சிவனே
எந்தையே ஈசா உடலிடங் கொண்டாய்
    யான்இதற் கிலன்ஓர்கைம் மாறே. 



It is Yourself You gave to me and received from me,
mine O Sankara !
Who is the cleverer one?
From You I received unending Ananda.
What did You receive from me at all?
My God,
who made my mind Your temple !
O Siva abiding at sacred Perunturai !
O my Father !
O Lord-God !
You abide in my body.
How can I requite You for this?

When Siva is in our mind / heart, where is the question of any sadhana, puja etc.,

Today is Maha Sivaratri.  The night of Siva.  The God who has no night and day, we
celebrate His day as Siva Ratri.  Today in Sri Ramanasramam there will be special pujas almost every time, that is about 6 times on this day.  In all Siva temples, the day is celebrated with six times abhishekam, alankaram and arti for Siva Linga.

Siva is dancing in the cremation ground, with fire on one hand and hand drum on the other, on the body of the demon.  He applies Vibhuti from the burnt corpse.

Today is the day of completed fasting.  People who cannot fast the whole day takes
gruel etc., on this day.

நளிரும் புனற்காழி நல்லஞான சம்பந்தன்
குளிருந் தலைச்சங்கை யோங்குகோயின் மேயானை
ஒளிரும் பிறையானை யுரைத்தபாட லிவைவல்லார்
மிளிருந் திரைசூழ்ந்த வையத்தார்க்கு மேலாரே.


On Siva, who dwells in the tall temple in cool Thalai Chankai, and who wears a cool crescent moon,  Jnana Sambandhaṉ of good qualities who is a native of Sirkazhi, of cool water those who are capable of reciting these verses composed (by him) will become Devas, to the people of this world which is girt by the sea having waves rolling up and down.

Padigam on Tiruth Thalai Chankadu completed.

அலையாரும் புனல்துறந்த அமணர்குண்டர் சாக்கியர்
தொலையாதங் கலர்தூற்றத் தோற்றங்காட்டி யாட்கொண்டீர்
தலையான நால்வேதந் தரித்தார்வாழுந் தலைச்சங்கை
நிலையார்ந்த கோயிலே கோயிலாக நின்றீரே.

Jains who do not bathe in water which has waves, and Buddhists, the low people spread slander without being exhausted, you admitted me into your grace showing me your divine form. You stayed for ever in the temple with many floors in Thalai Chankai where Brahmins who Vedas, in mind, all the four important Vedas, as the temple fitting your greatness.

பாயோங்கு பாம்பணைமே லானும்பைந்தா மரையானும்
போயோங்கிக் காண்கிலார் புறநின்றோரார் போற்றோவார்
தீயோங்கு மறையாளர் திகழுஞ்செல்வத் தலைச்சங்கைச்
சேயோங்கு கோயிலே கோயிலாகச் சேர்ந்தீரே.

Vishnu who lies on a superior serpent bed which is like a mat, and Brahma, who is seated on a cool lotus, were not able to find you though the former went digging into the earth and the latter went flying in the sky. Those who do not search for you outside the pale of Saivism will not cease from praising you you joined the tall temple which is visible from a great distance and where the wealthy Brahmins who maintain the three fires are prosperous, as the temple fitting your greatness.

திரையார்ந்த மாகடல்சூழ் தென்னிலங்கைக் கோமானை
வரையார்ந்த தோளடர விரலாலூன்று மாண்பினீர்
அரையார்ந்த மேகலையீ ரந்தணாளர் தலைச்சங்கை
நிரையார்ந்த கோயிலே கோயிலாக நினைந்தீரே.

You have the honor of pressing down your toe to crush the shoulders which were comparable to the mountain, of the king of Lanka,i in the south, girt by a great sea with waves. You wear a girdle in the waist as an ornament [This refers to Uma who is one half.] [Mēkalai: A jeweled girdle of 7 or 8 strands worn by women on their waists.].  You thought of dwelling in the temple with columns in Thalai Chankai where Brahmins are prosperous, as the temple fitting your greatness.

Holding fire and dancing to make the golden armors of the feet that embrace them to make a sound, you were united with Uma, who has tenderness like the creeper, on one half. You joined the well-guarded temple in Thalai Chaṅkai where Brahmins who desired the study of the Vēdas, wear a sacred thread on their chest smeared with holy ash, as the temple fitting your greatness.

நலநீர கோயிலே கோயிலாக நயந்தீரே.


Being the earth, the water, the sky, the fire and the air, those who controlled the nature of the five sense perceptions. Those who do not commit any false acts, and never cease from praising god in Thalai Chankai where worthy people who are not low by their deceptive nature, live. You desired the beautiful temple as the temple fitting your greatness.
