The question is often asked by the newcomers to the Asramam: when is the teacher they can turn to now that Ramana Maharshi left this world in 1950? The normal response is what need to look elsewhere when Bhagavan is still there? It is all very
well for those who are convinced  because of their own intimate experience of Bhagavan's Grace but for the sceptics, more experience who are in desperate need for guidance, this is an unsatisfactory answer.

All of us who are devotees of Bhagavan know there is a subtle radiance ever available
if one but remains still and listen quietly with an open heart and mind.  The fact that people come again and again is a ample proof that they do 'get' something so fulfilling
that they eagerly want to return.  What is the grace that satisfies the heart and quietens the mind?

Vishnu transforming himself into a pig and digging the big earth and Brahma who is in a big flower, had not the ability to see Siva, and they worshipped him with joined hands. He has ghosts as his army. The feet of the god who has a visible form and who is all things and who is at Aṉilai in Karuvūr.

He smears himself with sacred ash, has on his form of lady and has on his forehead a crescent moon; He is the real inward eye to the world [he is the eye which is spiritual knowledge is another meaning]. He is the master who admits us as his protege is attached to Aṉilai in Karuvūr.

11.  I am of the nature of eternal joy.  I am ever the bliss of knowledge. I am more subtle than the subtlest, devoid of the expression 'subtle' etc.,

12. I am just the undivided bliss, the embodiment of undivided bliss. I am ever of the immortal nature, ever the embodiment of the unitary.

13.  This is the bliss of Brahman.  All of this never exists, never.  I am devoid of the nature of the individual self. I am devoid of the nature of Isvara, the universal Being.

14, 15:  I am the embodiment of the Vedas and Sastras.  I am the cause of the remembrance of the scriptures.  I am the cause and effect of the world and of the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara; the distinctions of speech and subject matter, the agency of gross, subtle and causal bodies, the states of waking, dream and sleep, and the primal beings thereof -- prajna, taijas and visva.

16. I am the nature of all the sacred texts. I am ever the total bliss, transcending
all forms of imagination.

17. Duality and non duality, joy and sorrow, profit and loss, victory and defeat -- all are Brahman.  There is no doubt of this.  I am that Brahman. Of this there is no  uncertainty.

18,19:  The differences of the qualities sattva (serenity) and rajas (oscillation), doubt,
the fruits of desires in the heart, the seer, the seen, the total seer, the elements, beings and divinities -- all are Brahman. There is no doubt of this,  I am that Brahman. Of this there is no uncertainty.  I am verily the form of Turiya, the Forth
state. I am ever the form of Knowledge.

20, Ignorance too is, indeed, naught and that where from its activity arises. All is Brahman. There is no doubt of this. I am that Brahman.   Of this there is no uncertainty.

We bless the apparently bad because who knows what good may come from it.
The true fool is one who never learns because of pride, jealousy, envy and hatred and
sheer tamas (dullness). We avoid such people like a disease because they infect the atmosphere with their negativity.

The wise person is one who accepts every moment as a possibility to be thankful.
We all have had ample opportunity to meet both the wise and the foolish, in our lives and we gravitate to the wise person.  How much more so it is with Bhagavan who is pure light.  Bhagavan does not see our 'precious' ego or sense of identity, which we cling to like misers out of fear or desire.  He sees into our hearts what is real and what is unreal.  That is why Bhagavan though it seems he forgives us for many transgressions and stupidities, goes straight past our mountain of self righteousness
to the untainted center of who we really are.  It was observed in Bhagavan's time that there were so many problematic people and tense situations as personality with each
other for attention but it did not matter.  Bhagavan saw that it was necessary for all
toxins to come out just as the steam comes out of a pot placed on a fire. Bhagavan did not  believe the Vasanas were important. They were clothes and like the clothes could be dispensed with once the person realized they were harmful to their well being.

Kanakammal, a devotee who was with Bhagavan for many years and whom when she was old and frail in later years, was asked what she had learnt. She replied that Bhagavan had taught her not to place too much importance on the body.  She was then asked why, when her body was old and wracked with pain, she still came to the
Asramam every day to sit quietly for an hour or two in the Hall, where Bhagavan had sat for so long.  She said it was for gratitude.

May we too recognize and express our gratitude.

The nature of the mind is fluid and the art of meditation is to flow with it, but to mindful  of each thought as it arises.  Bhagavan wrote: 'Better than such broken thought (meditation) is its steady and continuous flow of oil or of a perennial stream.' (Upadesa Saram, verse 7).  The point of self inquiry is to develop consciousness so that we do not lose our center of gravity.  It is a question of poise.

Like the young Ajahn Chah we soon become baffled and disheartened if we rigidly follow every rule, instruction, advice, book, admonition, sloka, discussion, command, direction or stipulation.  The world is full of do's and don't's.  We would be driven mad if we followed them all. We would lose our balance and fall into one of those black holes of depression and despair.  One pointed awareness is like the light shine on a dark path to keep us safe.   The stronger the awareness the clearer our perception of what is the right action. Atma Vichara is our infallible tool.

The so called spiritual world and this physical world are not in opposition, just as the physical body of a person and their spirit are not in conflict. If they are at war, then a person is torn apart by contradictory impulses unless they find the panacea of the Guru's grace.  The body and mind are in fact, complimentary aspects that aid each other.  They are instruments which help us understand by revealing to us the results of our impulses and actions.  A human birth is the result of great merit.  According to scripture, it is not easy obtain.

We train our bodies and minds through discipline and virtue and we eventually see that they are not enemies.  How often have we seen people who prosecute their bodies, thinking that the world is an illusion, a bondage, and the sooner one gets rid of it the better.  This negative type of self restraint is a death wish.  It is an unintelligent denial; it is ignorance.  We are issued with bodies at birth, is not perhaps to be expected that we take a slight bit of trouble to keep those bodies in reasonable condition?

Slow and steady are the operative words.  The characteristic of Bhagavan's teaching is that it is generally unhurried,  but once a step is taken we never fall back into a particular trap of malign, unconscious vasanas.

We should remember that Bhagavan said that we take one step towards the Guru,
the Guru will take nine steps towards us.  To take that one step requires the simple
quality of flexible restraint so that the mind is quiet and open to grace.
