On the southern bank of the ancient Kāveri whose flowing water comes and erodes the bank, having in it mixed the tusk of the rutting elephant and pearls that fall from the bamboos [pearls are produced in bamboos in a poetical convention.] the Karmas of those who say, 'Let the feet of the god who is in Nāgēswaram where the sun and the moon come and bathe joining together, protect us' will perish.

If one remembers the sufferings undergone by Yama(god of death) who has the color of the sable cloud, Antakāsuraṉ, Karudaṉ, and Manmathan, who discharged arrows on Siva, standing at a distance, even if the planets and stars happen to be bad, they will do good to those who approach Nāgēswaram where the master always stays.
(people of this world!) fix this firmly in your minds.

Situated on the southern bank of the ancient Kaveri, which washes away by its waves, carrying in large quantities flowers which spread new fragrance, and articles found in the mountain, and pure gold, those who approach Nāgēswaram, where Siva always stays, reaching Sivalōkam worshipped by the celestial beings, who are in the upper world, and becoming one with god is true.

Plundering completely the produce of the cultivated farm which lay fallow previously and belongs to Kuṟavar, situated on southern bank of the ancient Kāveri, whose water in which precious stones are shining, spreads to make the birds to make a loud noise,
to those who are able to worship with joined hands and praise the feet of the god in Nāgeswaram, which is beautiful by being surrounded by gardens where honey spreads its fragrance, there will be no sufferings.

General Discussion / Re: Two Lovers, One Beloved - Margaret Laulor:
« on: March 24, 2017, 11:15:05 AM »
Orphaned as a child she was scattered from her older sisters, kidnapped and sold into
slavery.  Nevertheless she manifested a certain strength of character in her life of faith. She carried out her duties as a slave and fasted during the day and prayed at night.  There is an interesting story told about the way through which she earned her freedom. One night her master observed her in prayer and reportedly heard her saying the following:

'Oh my Lord.  Thou knowest that the desire of my heart is to obey Thee,m and that the light of my eye is in the service of Thy court.  If the matter rested with me, I should not cease for one hour from Thy service, but Thou hast made me subject to a creature. (ibid. p 7)

Her master observed a light or aura above her head which cast a radiance on her surroundings.  Pondering this strange phenomenon, he thought of setting her free.
Having  obtained her freedom she journeyed into the desert. She later settled into a cell, and subsequently built a place of retreat.

She received many offers of marriage but chose the celibate life as best suited to cultivate her single minded devotion to God. Rabi'a was known to have a number of disciples of her own and to associate with other Sufi leaders of her time.  In spite of the Oriental preference for exalting males, her biographers 'are prepared to grant to Rabi'a a position of equality with, even of preeminence above her contemporaries, including those who were accepted as leaders of thought and revered teachers of the Sufi doctrine.  (ibid. p. 19).

Role of Sastra Jnanam in Vichara Marga:

Enlightenment depends mainly on fitness with regard to clarity and ripeness with regard to one's natural inclination -- and not how much one requires to read -- in order to plunge headlong into the inescapable practice of Atma Vichara.  As Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa said metaphorically in the context of scriptural erudition, to kill oneself one does not need any more than a blade or a needle but to conquer others in battles one needs to wield a mighty sword!

Put simply: To teach serious students and to preach a large, it is helpful and even mandatory to acquire a great proficiency in scriptural knowledge, for expounding this esoteric wisdom in a lucid manner; however, for one's own salvation, such erudition is hardly essential and oftentimes it can become counterproductive, (Ulladu Narpadu Anubandham Verse 34), by generating new and unnecessary arguments.  Too much reading makes the mind restless while our aim is to quieten and sink it in the Source! One could say that Self Knowledge means committing hara kiri (suicide) by the ego.
Too much bookish knowlege often can nourish the ego, the seed of Samsara, through pride of learning.

Ashtavakara roars similarly that a wise seeker attains Self Knowledge through a few incisive instructions from a Sadguru (Ashtavakra Gita, Verse 15.1; Also Talks No. 275), whereas an aspirant with a restless intellect remain deluded all his life chasing endless bookish knowledge!  Nisargadatta Maharaj was one such rare seeker; he read very little but hung onto his Guru's dying words and was illumined within three years.
Bhagavan gave a tremendous confidence to many of His close disciples to pursue Vichara Sadhana when they were faced with major task of grasping Sastra Vichara, (Talks No. 230; Talks No. 513.), as illustrated in the cases of Desur Akhilandammal and Natanananda.  He told Kunju Swami that the supreme good would accrue if one pursues the former, accomplishing with whatever one utters subsequently would be in consonance with scriptural saying. Bhagavan quoted Ozhivil Odukkam. Verse 1.5) which says, 'Thannizhappai enna katru saadippan?' (By learning which scripture, can one achieve the loss of individuality?)

In Tiruvannamalai I realized that Lord Siva, Kailasapathi Himself, had incarnated on earth as Sri Ramana.  My quest, yearning, delusions and dualities were quenched by
Master's divine grace and mercy, elevating my mind to a deep state of meditation.  I found no difference between Sri Shishula Sherief and Sri Ramana Maharshi. I realized that it is Lord Siva who dwells in the lotus hearts of both souls.

In the ocean of life with its enormous ebbs and tides, Bhagavan drew me into the deep ocean of silence.  Later I received His guidance and teachings through His writings. His words were like an oasis in the desert.  Advaita is not easily understandable, but Bhagavan made it sound familiar and easily attainable.  This is what makes Him a unique master.  More than His words and teachings, Sri Ramana Himself became very dear to me.  He is a true father, a loving mother, a divine friend, an eternal Sadguru.  His simplicity, desire- less- ness, freedom from all passions, and His teaching that only the 'I' exists and nothing else, His state of ever abiding in that 'I' exists and nothing else, His state of ever abiding in the 'I' made a deep impression on me.

Sometimes my heart wept and melted, looking at the photos of Bhagavan when He sat on the hot rocks of Arunachala, caring nothing for the sun's heat that scorched His human form.  At His Asramam, He fed us with delicious food, and soothed our bodies and souls under cool roofs. Such motherliness makes my heart melt and tears comes to my eyes.  We are indeed fortunate to have a father and master like Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi.

On Mathi Mutham in Thilataip Pathi, surrounded by gardens where the southern balmy breeze stays, it is definite that those who meditate upon the garland of verses by Jnana Sambandhan, well-versed in Tamizh and a native of Sirkazhi, bound on the east by the sea which has its own stench, and who are able to praise god, will ascend into heaven and reach the feet of Siva.

Padigam on Tiruth Thilathaip Pathi completed.

The place of the god who does not come to hear the words of the mad people who have no great qualities, such as Jains who do not have the good fortune, Buddhists and Tēravatis, is Mathi Mutham, where the rutting elephant worshipped in Thilathaip Path,i where pious devotees and people of mystic powers worship Siva with humility.

The place of the master who is praised by Vishnu who is sleeping on the serpent-bed which has hoods, and Brahma, who is well-versed in the four Vedas, and seated in the fertile lotus, is the temple, Mathi Mutham, where the god of death comes to this world and worships Siva in Thilaitaip Pathi where the devotees sing music with their firm tongues (their tongues do not praise any other god).
