Siva who bore on his coiled matted locks, laughing skull without eyes, shining young crescent moon, and water with eddies. Is it possible to destroy he intimacy of those who have as the bag containing money, Siva who stays singing in Painjneeli, which is praised by blemish-less devotees?

Siva in Painjneeli, where humming bees buzz without ceasing on the Arabian jasmine flowers in the woods adjoining the forest region which are made beautiful by the white species of Malabar glory lilies.  Is not our deity who felt glad to dance, and who is neither hermaphrodite, nor male nor female.

Siva who is in Painjneeli, where the beautiful Kurumpu having drunk the honey which is equal to nectar, found in flowers, teach the bees, called honey, the melody of Pa?churam, what is the idea in covering himself with a skin killing the elephant which came in the hot forest, to make Uma trembles?

Siva who is staying in Painjneeli, bent as a big bow the big mountain, to burn the three cities of the enemies. He has no form of his own except what the devotees meditate upon. Is it possible to convince those who have not the good fortune to grasp in their minds his greatness?

Tirup Painjneeli:

Verse  1:

God sang the Vēdas which he revealed to the sages has nothing wanting in abode except the cremation-ground. He has a loin-cloth as his dress, matted lociks, is the place of the water Ganga.  The bull is his vehicle, the Bhutas do service to him daily his place of stay is Painjneeli.

Presumably all the devotees who read this editorial have also experienced the pull, the magnetic attraction of Arunachala that makes all other ways of spending one's time but a pale imitation of reality. Arunachala is a hard rock upon which we can beat our head at times, but its sweetness is like no other.

Surrendering to Arunachala is not the same as giving up anything intentionally.  Arunachala puts the world in a perspective and makes us realize what is important and what is not.  It means accepting and embracing our connection with something far greater than ourselves.  What we are surrendering is our small conception of who we are and acknowledging a transcendental power that can take us beyond our addictive thoughts which come round again and again, but which we mindlessly hold on to for fear of being left with nothing.  It can be a terrifying process but the Guru is always there.

Trust is required if the power of grace is to find fulfillment in us.  Bhagavan's Grace is ever available, but for it to enter us we must have faith in the process, because it is not always smooth till our negative habits or Vasanas are cleansed.  Trust means being open to new possibilities that we have not yet been capable of conceiving by our
own volition. Trust means opening up to a higher power, not in a thoughtless way, but with due consideration, patience and humility. Surrender does not mean sitting there like a stuffed doll expecting the heavens to open up.  It demands our total attention and active consent.  Like the silent chanting of a mantra the attitude of surrender has to become as natural as rhythmic breathing if it is to have an effect.

Verse  172:

For those who perform worship to the rising sun, the sun's light shines, effacing all that is within and all that is without.  Similarly, is not renunciation to remain free of all association, as when one sees a devoted wife offer herself up on the funeral pyre?

Verse 173:

(The most ripe devotees) are like a bell without a clapper, which makes no sound even when you shake it.  It will be hard indeed (for those of lesser attainment) to remain in that state.  (For them) it will be like measuring with a grain measure, and throwing out, so that they are destroyed, all those unreal movements of consciousness that have (in the past) manifested and grown up (within them).

The commentary by TCS makes it clear that two grades of seekers are being referred to in this verse.  In the first part, those who possess the highest level of ripeness, Tivirataram, are compared to a bell without a clapper.  Their practice is effortless, since discriminating awareness cannot arise in a consciousness that is entirely still,
there being no trace of desire to cause movement in it, just as no sound can come from a bell without a clapper.  The consciousness of a renunciant who is unaffected by
desire will not be disturbed, however much it is assailed by the mind and senses.  It is therefore compared to an 'umai mani' - a dumb bell, a bell which can make no noise even when it is shaken because it does not have a clapper inside it.

The other grades of seeker, in whom the discriminating state, but they may on occasion do so, employing various forms of spiritual practice, in which they recognize the false with the aid of the divine grace, earned through the practice and reject it each time it arises. A 'marakkal' is a grain measure equivalent to eight 'padi' 400 cubic inches.  The point being made seems to be that, whilst, for advanced seeker, no effort
will be required to abide as the Self, those of lesser attainment will need to be extremely vigilant, rejecting the onslaught of the world on the mind and sense repeatedly as it arises, just as, when measuring a heap of grain, the same measure is filled emptied out, then filled again many, many times.

Contd.,

Verse  11:

The God who burnt the three cities, on him who has Uma, the lady of distinction who has the weight of tresses of hair, and residing in the city of Pūntarāy, those capable of reciting the truthful verses composed by Jnana Sambandhan, praising the god, it is very definite that they will attain salvation which is as eminent as the head is to the body. (Even in the 11th verse the incident of destruction of the three cities is mentioned.)

Padigam on Tirup Puntarai completed.

The God destroyed the three cities which was crowded round by the three classes of demons, to be engulfed by that great fire, is the god who has as his half Uma, who adorns on her tresses of hair bunches of flowers, resides in the city of Pūntarāy and who could not be comprehended by the Jains and Buddhists.

The one who is different from the world and who made the cities of the demons which were as important as the face, to be engulfed by fire, is the Lord who has as one portion a beautiful lady and the ruler of the city of Pūntarāy, who could not be found by Kaṇṇaṉ, (Vishnu) and Brahma, seated on a lotus flower.

The warrior who made the demon of great sins to suffer, under the mountain Kailāsam, the warrior who destroys the fortress of burning anger, is the husband of Uma, who has tresses of hair resembling flowers of iron-wood tree, residing in the city of Pūntarāy where Brahmins are prosperous.

The God who saw to it to save the Devas, and to destroy the demons, who drank the poison that rose from the sea and stationed it in his neck, is the husband of the lady who has tresses of hair on which bees settle, residing in the city of Pūntarāy which has fields where lotus is growing as weeds.

He who chose an arrow with which he made the grand and big cities of the demons who had formerly had the honor of being the devotees of Siva. (In Puranams, it is said that the demons of the three cities who were staunch devotees of Siva, were later made to hate Siva and become his enemies by the guiles of Nāradhar,) He is the god who has as his half a lady who has eyes as beautiful as the carp fish, residing in the city of Pūntarāy which is made beautiful by the foaming and raging sea.

The God without an equal who set bright fire to the cities of those enemies who had white teeth the whiteness of the teeth appear prominent in contrast to the black bodies of the demons. That is why this epithet has been given to them,                                                                                                           is the husband of Uma who has

Having the serpent and the mountain as bowstring and bow respectively, the great god who prevented the three cities to fly as they wished in the sky, and destroyed them is the one who has Uma, who speaks words as sweet as syrup of sugar, residing in the city of Pūntarāy which is adorned by parks of areca-palms.
