Atma Vichara is not unlike restraint.  We inquire into who is thinking, who is feeling.
Who is this 'I'?  The very question gives us pause to consider mindfully what we think or feel.  It gives us a space in which to discriminate between what is true and what is false.
Whenever we are in doubt we pause and wait until the right response we misidentify
ourselves with a notion of who we are that is wrong.  The space between thoughts,
created by self inquiry, gives us the opportunity to see things as they are, not as we wish them to be in that moment of stillness there is no projection of a thought, there is no confused doubt and there is no projection of wish fulfillment.

There is a story told by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa which illustrates what is essential
and what is irrelevant.  There was a small boat about to cross a river and in the boat
were a pundit and a villager. Because of vanity the pundit made a great show of erudition while the villager listened quietly. A thunderstorm arose as they made their way across the river.  The villager understood from experience that their boat would probably sink.  He turned to the pundit and inquired if he could swim.  The pundit said no and the villager then commented that though he did not know the Vedas like pundit, he could swim.

What is the most important tool we have if we wish to be free of confusion and ignorance?  It is a mind trained to discriminate between what is eternal and what is transitory.  Like the ability to swim we are saved from drowning in our sea of concepts.

There are many ways to train the mind which involve simple disciplines and cultivation of virtue.  Live a simple life as possible.  Do not unnecessarily argue as it is a waste of energy and creates resentment.  Avoid comparisons with others as we are all on a
different path, each traveling at their own speed and most with needs that are different from ours.  Keep the right company and avoid those who are malicious.
Do not judge others unless you are prepared to see from their side their side the challenges they face. Avoid gossip and the craving for public recognition.  It comes
down to one basic requirement: avoid negativity as much as possible . Be clean in body and mind.

Verse  11:

புல்லம் மேறிதன் பூம்பு கலியை
நல்ல ஞானசம் பந்தன் நாவினாற்
சொல்லு மாலையீ ரைந்தும் வல்லவர்க்
கில்லை யாம்வினை யிருநி லத்துளே.

There will be no sins in their wide world for those who are capable of reciting the ten verses which are like garlands and which came from the mouth of good Jṉana Sambandhaṉ, which did not praise any other deity, on the beautiful Pukali of the Lord who rides on a bull. [Sambandhar did not praise any other god except Siva.]

நின்று துய்ப்பவர் நீசர் தேரர்சொல்
ஒன்ற தாகவை யாஉ ணர்வினுள்
நின்ற வன்நிக ழும்பு கலியைச்
சென்று கைதொழச் செல்வ மாகுமே.

The words of low people who eat their food standing (Jains), the words of the Buddhists, do not listen to them.  Wealth will increase if one goes to, and worship with both hands, Pukali where the Lord is permanent in the minds of the people who do not attach any great importance (to their words).

Verse  9:

மாலும் நான்முகன் தானும் வார்கழற்
சீல மும்முடி தேட நீண்டெரி
போலும் மேனியன் பூம்பு கலியுட்
பால தாடிய பண்பன் நல்லனே.

The Lord has a form like fire which grew in length when Vishnu, and Brahma, with four aces searched the nature of the feet and head the Lord who has good properties and who bathed in milk in the beautiful Pukali, is good.

அருப்பி னார்முலை மங்கை பங்கினன்
விருப்பி னான்அரக் கன்னு ரஞ்செகும்
பொருப்பி னான்பொழி லார்பு கலியூர்
இருப்பி னானடி யேத்தி வாழ்த்துமே.

The Lord has the young lady of the mountain who has breasts comparable to buds. He has love on his devotees. He destroyed the might of demon with the help of the mountain. People of this world! Invoke his blessings by worshipping the feet of the Lord who resides in the city of Pukali which has many parks.

கரவி டைமனத் தாரைக் காண்கிலான்
இரவி டைப்பலி கொள்ளும் எம்மிறை
பொருவி டையுயர்த் தான்பு கலியைப்
பரவி டப்பயில் பாவம் பாறுமே.

The Lord cannot even condescend to look at people who deceitful ideas in their minds.
Our Lord who receives alms at night. He has given prominence to the form of a fighting a bull by exhibiting it in his flag. The crowded sins will get scattered and destroyed if one praises his Pukali.

மறையி னான்ஒலி மல்கு வீணையன்
நிறையி னார்நிமிர் புன்ச டையனெம்
பொறை யினானுறை யும்பு கலியை
நிறையி னால்தொழ நேச மாகுமே.

The Lord is the author of the Vēdas. He has a Veeṇai on which he plays sweet music.
He has golden and erect matted locks, which is full of water. If anyone worships the beautiful Pukali with a firm and resolute mind, belonging to the Lord who carries our burden, it will increase piety.

ஓதத் தார்விட முண்ட வன்படைப்

ஏதத் தார்க்கிட மில்லை யென்பரே.

The Lord has worn many anklets of tinkling sound that are tied to the feet.
He drank the poison which was produced in the ocean. He has an army of Bhūtam.
Learned people say that if one worships the city of Pukali there is no room for suffering.

பொடிகொள் மேனியன் பூம்பு கலியுள்
அடிக ளையடைந் தன்பு செய்யுமே.

The Lord placed on his head the fragrant leaves of Vilvam as well as Dhatura flowers which are not fragrant. He has the property of being spoken highly by the groups of Bhūtam of grotesque forms. has smeared his form with the fine powder of sacred ash.
People of this world! Love the god in beautiful Pukali with devotion, approaching him.

வீசு மின்புரை காதன் மேதகு
பாச வல்வினை தீர்த்த பண்பினன்
பூசு நீற்றினன் பூம்பு கலியைப்
பேசு மின்பெரி தின்ப மாகவே.

Throw off all low attachments the Lord of such a property as to completely destroy the very strong action of Pāsam which is eminent by its evil effects. People of this world!
Always talk about the beautiful Pukali of the Lord who has smeared sacred ash, to define great pleasure.

நண்ணு மின்னல மான வேண்டிலே.

The Lord has a bull made ready to ride, with all adornments. He has as a chaplet the crescent moon as white as milk. People of this world! If you are desirous of good things in this life, go and worship Pukali where the Lord who has on his head fragrant Koṉṟai flowers.

Tirup Pukali  - another name for Sirkazhi:

Verse  1:

உகலி யாழ்கட லோங்கு பாருளீர்
அகலி யாவினை யல்லல் போயறும்
இகலி யார்புர மெய்த வன்னுறை
புகலி யாம்நகர் போற்றி வாழ்மினே.

People of this eminent world surrounded by deep sea in which waves rise and roll!
Our sins will disappear without increasing. Sufferings will go away from us.
Enjoy a happy life by worshipping the city of Pukali where the god who shot an arrow on the enemies' cities, resides.

51.  Merging in which reflection ceases to be, wherein waking is unknown, wherein delusion is indeed dead - be ever full of That.

52.  That in which, indeed, time suffers death, wherein yoga undergoes dissolution,

wherein indeed is supreme bliss - be ever full of That.

54.  That in which the universe does not exist in the least, wherein there is no world,
wherein the inner faculties do not exist - be ever full of That.

55.  That in which joy alone is, wherein bliss alone is, wherein indeed is supreme
bliss - be ever full of That.

56. That in which only consciousness of Being exists, wherein there is just consciousness alone, wherein shines the fullness of bliss - be ever full of That.

57.  That in which the supreme Brahman is directly present, wherein the Oneself is the verily supreme, wherein peace is the supreme goal - be ever full of That.   

58.  That in which is the significance of the undivided, wherein evidently lies the support, wherein destruction etc., are non existent - be ever full of That.

59. That in which oneself alone is, wherein oneself is verily the victory, wherein evidently is the great Self - be ever full of That.

60.  That in which is the supreme truth, wherein oneself is verily greatness, wherein lies direct knowledge -- be ever full of That.\

There was a great Theravada monk Ajahn Chah (1918-1992), in the Thai Forest
Tradition.  In one of his talks 'Understanding Vinaya', he related that after he had begun to practice meditation, he went to the most revered master of the time, the Venerable Ajahn Mun.  He was perplexed and had reached a dead end after reading numerous and detailed Buddhist texts on how a man should act.

He told Ajahn Mun that it was impossible to remember every single rule. Ajahn Mun replied that this was true if one took into account every single rule but, 'If we train this mind to have a sense of shame and a fear of wrong doing, we will then be restrained, we will be cautious.'

'This will condition us to be content with little, with few wishes, because we can't possibly look after them all.  When this happens our Sati (Remembrance) becomes stronger. We will be able to maintain Sati at all times.  Wherever we are, we will make effort to maintain through Sati. Caution will be developed. Whenever you doubt don't act on it.  If there is anything you don't understand, ask the teacher. Trying to practice every single training rule would be indeed burdensome, but we should decide whether or not we are prepared to admit our faults. Do we accept them?'

'This teaching is very important. It is not so much that we must know every single training rule, it is more that we should know how to train our own minds.

'All that stuff that you have been reading arises from the mind; rather than doubting
al the time... be composed in mind. Whatever arises that you doubt, just give it up.
For instance, if you wonder, 'Is this wrong or not?' but if you are not really sure, then
don't say it, don't act on it, don't discard your restraint.'

It has happened to all of us that even an event which seems to forebode disastrous
consequences, turns out in later years to be beneficial in ways we could not imagine.
Conversely, it can also occur that what appears to have been exciting turns out later as too good to be true. We were lured by an inviting dream that became a nightmare because we forgot there would always be a cost. We met someone for example whose promises are laced with delusion and alarm bells go off in our mind, but we do not
know as yet why.  We face it daily for instance on a mundane scale with advertising
that promises to fill us with contentment if we only use some product whose very
existence we were unaware of until then!

Because of our limited minds, we cannot see the bigger picture. How can we evaluate the effect of that which is happening right now when we are ignorant of what may  happen in the next moment, let alone next week or year? Like blind mice we grope our way along.  Gratitude is the right attitude which affirms our faith that the guru is teaching us though we may not immediately see it.  We trust that in everything that happens to us there is the possibility of good. We may not see it now but with Sraddha (faith) we affirm the possibility and thereby open ourselves up to the action
of Grace.  A closed heart will never bring us closes to the light of Bhagavan's Grace.
