The festival of black paste called Krishna gandha utsavam is held which is unique on this day.  'Kriyakramadyotika'  by Aghora Shivacharya us a ritualistic text, most popular in Tamizh Nadu and followed by a large number of temples.  The Karanaagama gives the process and purpose of this practice.  Sandal paste and the herb Agaru's paste is mixed with jaggery proportionately.  To the heated up and burnt mixture is added cow's ghee and made into a black paste for use in the festival.  It is be believed in Saiva Siddhanta doctrine which has given the famous dictum - Anbe Sivam or God is Love, that all living beings are covered with three kinds of Malas or impurities namely, Anava / finiteness, Karma / past deeds and May /illusory actions,  further classified into gross and subtle impurities.  The gross impurity is placed at the feet of Adi Guru Nataraja.  The black paste represents the impurities which are obliterated while the dance assumes the Aghora form.  After the removal of black paste, the deity is given a bath, all as part of of the Nritta festival.  Nataraja is called
Nritta Nayaka.  The Nritta performed by the Lord is called the Aghora dance.

The holy bath given on this day to the deity is the most meritorious among the six days in a year that they are performed.  In Thillai i.e.Chidambaram, a ten day festival is held during Tiru Adirai.  On the tenth day, at dawn, Maha Abhishekam is done to Lord Nataraja and goddess Sivakamasundari at Raja Sabhai. A special Tiru Abharanam - Sacred Jewels Alankaram, with nine precious gems is done to Sri Nataraja's Pancha Murti. 

The abhishekam of Nataraja in the thousand pillared hall is a great event. It denotes
creation (Srishti). The food offering is preservation (Stithi), Sandal as Krishna Gandham smeared on Him is dissolution (Samhara).  A black cow is brought before Him as obscuration (Tirobhava) and finally the Dipaaradhana Arti which all people witness  is grace (Anugraha).  These separately considered, are the activities of the deities Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheswara and Sadasiva.

Iyal,Isai Natakam - form the three fold components of the most ancient languages of Tamizh.  In temple rituals, Geeta (music), Vadya (instrumental music) and Nritya (dance) were the three prominent Upasanas at the culmination of the sixteen Upacharas. Since all festivals were religion based, music and dance had been important factors in the celebrations.  Skanda Purana describes that when the sun shines in the Dhanur constellation, the day of Tiru Adirai Vrata arrives for which Rudra is the Devata.
It is in conjunction with the full moon, Poornami. One gets up early in the morning on this day to worship the dancing Lord.

The worship on Tiru Adirai is of the southern face of Siva Lingam by Abhishekam,
offerings and ghee lamps.

Among the five elements, the subtlest space whose essence is sound, is represented
by the Akasa Lingam in the temple dedicated to this concept, Chidambaram.  Lord
Nataraja personifies the descent from the subtlest as an act of creation and also the
ascent from the grossest as an act of dissolution.  Ananda Tandavam- the Blissful dance - is the dance of Nataraja of Chidambaram.  Tirumoolar in his Tantra Tirumandiram refers to it as 'Nadanta' posture-  the pinnacle of meditative bliss - even beyond the realm of unheard sound or Shiva Vyapti, the ultimate!  The dance hall is Chit Akasha, the hall of Supreme Consciousness.   

On this holy day, one extols Lord Siva, performing five most important functions to keep the world spinning in rhythmic tandem.  They are creation, protection, dissolution, veiling the truth and showering of grace.  Lord Nataraja's cosmic dance with his consort Sivakami represents these Pancha Kriya dances.  Arudhra or Tiruvadirai is considered the favorite star of Lord Nataraja, though the Lord never takes birth.  He appeared to the holy saints Patanjali and Vyagrapada on this day.  Maha Vishnu asked Adi Sesha to go to Chidambaram for tapas.  The Lord appeared on Tiruvadirai day and danced in Chidambaram.

Today is Ardra Darsanam.  Today,  Nataraja performs His Cosmic Dance. It is celebrated
in all Siva Temples where Nataraja is there.  It is also celebrated in the Asramam where there is Natraja idol in the Mother's temple.

The form of Nataraja - the supreme dancer - has been hailed as the highest concept of

Angikam bhuvanam yasya
Vachikam sarva vangmayam
Acharyam chandra taradi
Tam namah satvikam Sivam.

Whose limbs are the universe, Whose word is the essence of all language. Whose
ornaments are the moon and stars - To that Virtuous Shivam, we bow down!

Saivagama Tantras, the ritualistic sacred texts of Sadhana or devout single pointed
worship, devised an artistic form in which all human devotion can be directed - Nataraja,  the supreme dancer.  The form of Nataraja has been hailed  as the highest
concept of art.  Ancient Saivites were known to practice a dance drama at the famous Nataraja Temple of Chidambaram.  In the holy month of Margazhi (December - January) in Tamizh Nadu, on the day with the asterism Tiru Adirai, the Arudra festival is especially important to Lord Nataraja in all temples, particularly Chidambaram.

Verse  1:

மாயிரு ஞால மெல்லா மலரடி வணங்கும் போலும்
பாயிருங் கங்கை யாளைப் படர்சடை வைப்பர் போலும்
காயிரும் பொழில்கள் சூழ்ந்த கழுமல வூரர்க் கம்பொன்
ஆயிரங் கொடுப்பர் போலும் ஆவடு துறைய னாரே.

All the people of the big and wide world will bow before the lotus feet, he will place the big and rushing Ganga, in his spreading matted locks,  the Lord in Avaṭutūṟai will give one thousand gold coins to Jnana Sambandhan, whose birth-place is Kazhumalam surrounded by big gardens bearing fruits.

Verse 10:

வாளெயி றிலங்க நக்கு வளர்கயி லாயந் தன்னை
ஆள்வலி கருதிச் சென்ற வரக்கனை வரைக்கீ ழன்று
தோளொடு பத்து வாயுந் தொலைந்துட னழுந்த வூன்றி
ஆண்மையும் வலியுந் தீர்ப்பா ரவர்வலம் புரவ னாரே.

Laughing to make the bright teeth to shine, pressing down close under the mountain, the demon who went to uproot it thinking of his valor and strength, to make his twenty shoulders and all the ten mouths to perish Siva in Valampuram will remove his valor and strength.

Padigam on Tiru Valampuram completed.

Verse  9:

கருவரை யனைய மேனிக் கடல்வண்ண னவனுங் காணான்
திருவரை யனைய பூமேற் றிசைமுக னவனுங் காணான்
ஒருவரை யுச்சி யேறி யோங்கினா ரோங்கி வந்து
அருமையி லெளிமை யானா ரவர்வலம் புரவ னாரே.

Even Vishnu, who has the color of the sea and has a big body like the block mountain, could not find him sea is compared to the color and the mountain for the big body and Brahma too who has four faces and who is seated in a lotus flower as big as a beautiful mountain, could not find him.  Siva rose high climbing up the peak of a mountain Kailash, having risen high and descending low [the] god in Valampuram, became easy of access in the midst of his preeminence.

Verse  8:

அருகெலாங் குவளை செந்நெல் அகலிலை யாம்ப னெய்தல்
தெருவெலாந் தெங்கு மாவும் பழம்விழும் படப்பை யெல்லாம்
குருகினங் கூடி யாங்கே கும்மலித் திறகு லர்த்தி
மருவலா மிடங்கள் காட்டும் வலம்புரத் தடிக ளாரே.

By the side of the village, there is blue Nelumbo flowers, and crops of paddy and lilies of broad leaves, and white Indian water-lilies that blossom in midst of that crop, coconut trees and mango trees are growing tall in all the streets.  In the gardens, fruits fall having become fully ripe.  Flocks of birds gather there, flap their wings and dry them.  The god is in Valampuram which contains, such places frequented by birds.

Verse  7:

செங்கயல் சேல்கள் பாய்ந்து தேம்பழ மினிய நாடித்
தங்கயந் துறந்து போந்து தடம்பொய்கை யடைந்து நின்று
கொங்கையர் குடையுங் காலைக் கொழுங்கனி யழுங்கி னாராம்
மங்கல மனையின் மிக்கார் வலம்புரத் தடிக ளாரே.

Fish like red Kayal and Sēl, searching for sweet fruit which are tasty to eat, having gone leaving their tanks reaching the extensive big natural tank, the god who is in Valampuram, when ladies plunged and bathed in the water, felt pity for the plump fruits where in the houses auspicious things are in abundance.  (The meaning of the first three lines is not as clear as it should be.)

Verse 6:

நினைக்கின்றே னெஞ்சு தன்னா னீண்டபுன் சடையி னானே
அனைத்துடன் கொண்டு வந்தங் கன்பினா லமைய வாட்டிப்
புனைக்கின்றேன் பொய்ம்மை தன்னை மெய்ம்மையைப் புணர மாட்டேன்
எனக்குநான் செய்வ தென்னே யினிவலம் புரவ னீரே.

Siva who has  long and tawny matted locks,  the one who is in Valampuram!
I am thinking of you in my mind.  Bathing you properly with love bringing all things that are used for bathing, I increase falsehood, I am unable to be associated with truth.  What can I do now for my uplift?

Verse  5:

சுருளுறு வரையின் மேலாற் றுலங்கிளம் பளிங்கு சிந்த
இருளுறு கதிர்நு ழைந்த விளங்கதிர்ப் பசலைத் திங்கள்
அருளுறு மடிய ரெல்லா மங்கையின் மலர்க ளேந்த
மருளுறு கீதங் கேட்டார் வலம்புரத் தடிக ளாரே.

Scattering the white rays like crystal which are moving on the ridges which are curved,  the devotees who desire the grace of the god in Valampuram, who wears a tender crescent moon of mild rays which penetrate into the ears of corn in the darkness of night, listened to the music known as Maruḷ, when they were holding flowers in their palms to worship him. (The meaning of the first two lines is not clear).

Verse  4:

முளையெயிற் றிளநல் லேனம் பூண்டுமொய் சடைக டாழ
வளையெயிற் றிளைய நாகம் வலித்தரை யிசைய வீக்கிப்
புளைகயப் போர்வை போர்த்துப் புனலொடு மதியஞ் சூடி
வளைபயி லிளைய ரேத்தும் வலம்புரத் தடிக டாமே.

Wearing the tusk of a hog which is young and strong, the crowded matted locks to hang low, having securely tied fittingly in the waist seizing a young cobra of curved teeth, covering himself with the upper garment got from an elephant adorning himself with water and a crescent moon, Siva is the god in Valampuram where ladies wearing many bangles, praise him.

தேனுடை மலர்கள் கொண்டு திருந்தடி பொருந்தச் சேர்த்தி
ஆனிடை யஞ்சுங் கொண்டே யன்பினா லமர வாட்டி
வானிடை மதியஞ் சூடும் வலம்புரத் தடிக டம்மை
நானடைந் தேத்தப் பெற்று நல்வினைப் பயனுற் றேனே.

Laying the flowers with honey to reach the perfect feet, bathing the god with love to please him, with the five products of the cow, I, who am in every way low, got the fruit of my virtuous acts by reaching and praising the god in Valampuram who wears a crescent moon that shines in the sky.

மடுக்களில் வாளை பாய வண்டின மிரிந்த பொய்கைப்
பிடிக்களி றென்னத் தம்மிற் பிணைபயின் றணைவ ரால்கள்
தொடுத்தநன் மாலை யேந்தித் தொண்டர்கள் பரவி யேத்த
வடித்தடங் கண்ணி பாகர் வலம்புரத் திருந்த வாறே.

As the scabbard fish leap in the deep pools, the mural fish which embrace often their females, like the male and female elephants in the natural tanks from which the swarm of bees speed for safety.  The devotees holding the good garlands which they strung, praise in the second person and third person, Siva.  What a wonderful sight it is that the god who has on his half a lady of big eyes like the tender mango cut into two, dwells in Valampuram.

Verse  1:

தெண்டிரை தேங்கியோ தஞ் சென்றடி வீழுங் காலைத்
தொண்டிரைத் தண்டர் கோனைத் தொழுதடி வணங்கி யெங்கும்
வண்டுகண் மதுக்கண் மாந்தும் வலம்புரத் தடிக டம்மைக்
கொண்டுநற் கீதம் பாடக் குழகர்தா மிருந்த வாறே.

Wwhen the clear waves become stagnant and the water in them surge and fall at the feet of the god, the devotees making a roaring noise, paying obeisance to the feet of the god who is the master of the Devas and worshiping him with joined hands, everywhere meditating in their hearts the god in Valampuram where the bees drink different kinds of honey.  How wonderful a sight it is that the youth was seated when they sang songs of praise.
