Verse 1:

கண்காட்டு நுதலானுங் கனல்காட்டுங் கையானும்
பெண்காட்டு முருவானும் பிறைகாட்டுஞ் சடையானும்
பண்காட்டு மிசையானும் பயிர்காட்டும் புயலானும்
வெண்காட்டி லுறைவானும் விடைகாட்டுங் கொடியானே.

The Lord who has on his forehead an eye which is fire!  He has on his hand fire, has a lady on his form, has a crescent moon on his matted locks of hair. He is in the form of music which has many Pans. He is in the form of cloud which nourishes the vegetation, and who resides in Veṇkāṭu.  He has a banner in which the bull is exhibited.

21.  The world of the cardinal directions is ever illusory.  It is associated with ear and sound.  All are illusory. There is no doubt of this.  I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

22.  The world of the Sun is ever illusory. It is an association of eye and form. All are illusory.  There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

23.  The world of Varuna (waters) is ever associated with tongue and taste. All are illusory. There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman. There is no uncertainty about this.

24.  The world of Vayu (air) is ever illusory.  It is associated with skin and touch.  All are illusory. There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

25.  The world of Asvins is associated with the duality of smell and nose. All are illusory. There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

26.  The world of Agni (fire)m is ever illusory. It is associated with speech and utterances. All are illusory.  There is no doubt of this.  I am only Brahman. There is no uncertainty about this.

27.  The world of Indra is ever illusory. It is associated with hands and feet. All are illusory.  There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman. There is no uncertainty about this.

28.  The great world of Upandra (Vamana Vishnu) is associated with feet and motion. All are illusory.  There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman. There is no uncertainty
about this.

29. Death never is, associated with anus, the organ of excretion. All is illusory. There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

30. The lofty world of Prajapati (Manes) is associated with the pleasure of private organs.  All is illusory. There is no doubt of this. I am only Brahman.  There is no uncertainty about this.

I was sent to the Thinnai School of my village, (Thinnai is the raised veranda, open to
the streets, forming the entry to traditional South Indian street houses. In small villages, children were sent to this single class, single teacher 'school', that functioned on the thinnai of one of the larger houses of the village. They would be taught the alphabets and basic arithmetic tables. During Kunju Swami's childhood all that most children got was their 'schooling' at the thinnai school, which would generally last just a year, or two at the most.) when I was nearing six where, to some extent, I managed to learn to read my vernacular Malayalam and to write it on palm leaves. From my seventh year on, my father used to take me with him daily to bathe in the village pond.  There, I would see Vedic Brahmins bathing in the adjacent ghats (the pond's shoreline earmarked into exclusive bathing segments for the various social groups of the village), chanting mantras while standing waist deep in water. Their sight kindled in me a keen desire to do it like them.

The desire persisted and soon turned into an obsession hen one night Lord Siva appeared in a dream.  With matted tresses of hair, body smeared all over with sacred ash, and wearing a string of Rudraksha beads (A sacred seed that forms a part of Siva's costume, literally meaning 'Siva's eye'.  These roundish beads are strung and worn around the neck by devotees of Siva as a mark of their devotion to Him, and would also double as a rosary.).

He pronounced the Panchakshari (the five syllabled) na-ma-si-va-ya mantra) in my ears, three times in succession. On waking up, however, I was unable to recall the syllable, being too young to remember it.  The whole of next day I felt grieved, as though I lost a treasure that I had obtained.  I went to bed that night overcome by disappointment and longing.  The Lord came again that night in my dream and repeated the mantra!  This time I listened with attention and, from then on, I took up ceaseless mental chanting of the Panchakshari Mantra.

The first four chapters of the above titled book are given below:

A blessed bee am I, to hover, ever in close proximity of the lotus that is verily the twin feet of Lord Annamalai, and drink deep the nectar therein.  Twice blessed indeed, to partake of the ambrosial grace of my Bhagavan, Guru Ramana, who, ever abiding as the Atman-Self, also led others on the path of deliverance.  It is my fortunate lot to have thus been twice blessed.

Endowed At Boyhood with God's Gracious Gifts:

I am the third child to my parents, Raghavan and Ponnukutti, of a middle class farming community, born in January 1897, in the village of Cherakodu that lies between Palakkad and Chittur towns in the Kerala region.  Until my third year I grew
up like any other child, showing nothing to mark me as being different from other children.

After that I would, it seems, sit quiet in some place, neither joining other children
of my age in play nor crying or throwing those childish tantrums.  This uncharacteristic behavior of mine naturally puzzled my father who then showed my horoscope to my maternal uncle, an expert astrologer.  My father wanted him to divine the planetary influences that would account for my odd behavior. 

On perusing my horoscope this uncle of mine was struck with wonder and delight! He said to my father, 'To beget a child such as this one, so full of wealth of divinity, is more than what our family of modest standing deserves!  Therefore, in bringing up this child, you should show every care in matters of food and ceremonial cleanliness.'
My father was much pleased to hear this pronouncement. He was well learned in Vedantic texts such as Kaivalya Navaneetham.  On the one hand, he evinced a keen interest in philosophic texts such of Vedanta and, on the other, held a deep faith in God.

கானமர் சோலைக் கபாலீச் சரமமர்ந்தான்
தேனமர் பூம்பாவைப் பாட்டாகச் செந்தமிழான்
ஞானசம் பந்த னலம்புகழ்ந்த பத்தும்வல்லார்
வானசம் பந்தத் தவரோடும் வாழ்வாரே.


In the form of songs addressed to the lady who is like a portrait, wearing flower, in which there is honey, with reference to Siva, who dwells with desire in Kapālīcharam which has fragrant gardens, those who are able to recite all the ten verses which praised the festivals conducted in Mayilai, by Jnana Sambandhan, who has good knowledge of refined Tamizh, will be live along with those who have attained salvation.

கருஞ்சோலை சூழ்ந்த கபாலீச் சரத்தான்றன்
பெருஞ்சாந்தி காணாதே போதியோ பூம்பாவாய்.

Jains, who lead a life having stripped off their cloths, and the black Buddhists, slander loudly. Siva who dwells with desire in Kapālīcharam surrounded by dark gardens in the country, do you go without seeing the great bath at the end of the festival?

தண்ணா வரக்கன்றோள் சாய்த்துகந்த தாளினான்
கண்ணார் மயிலைக் கபாலீச் சரமமர்ந்தான்
பண்ணார் பதினெண் கணங்கடம் மட்டமிநாள்
கண்ணாரக் காணாதே போதியோ பூம்பாவாய்.

Siva had a foot which became great and with which he broke off the shoulders of the demon, who was low, dwells in Kapālicharam which is captivating the eye, with desire.
do you go without seeing the eight day of the fortnight (light or dark) to the complete satisfaction of the eyes, when the eighteen classes of celestial hosts who are well-versed in seven swara music worship Siva.

ஒலிவிழாக் காணாதே போதியோ பூம்பாவாய்.


The god who remained at the temple Kapālicharam witnessing the festival of bustle in the large Mayilai where young innocent ladies crowd in the streets full of festive activities. Do you go without seeing the festival of bustle in the star Uttaram in the month of Paṅguṉi, when songs pertaining to the festival of offerings of food to god are sung. (Paṅguṉi Uttaram is the main annual festival celebrated even today).

மடலார்ந்த தெங்கின் மயிலையார் மாசிக்

அடலானே றூரு மடிக ளடிபரவி
நடமாடல் காணாதே போதியோ பூம்பாவாய்.

Siva who witnessed the bath in the sea during the month of Masi, which is proximate to Mayilai which has coconut tree full of flat leaves, dwells with desire in Kapālicharam. Do you go without seeing the dancing of the devotees who sing in praise of the feet of the Lord who rides a strong bull capable of killing.

Siva who dwells with desire in Kapālīcharam and who is in the form of the sacred ash, in the great Mayilai, where beautiful ladies who coat their bright eyes with collyriyum gather together.  Do you go without seeing the festival in Poosam, in the month of Thai, when ladies wearing suitable jewels celebrate the festival with white rice soaked in ghee?

In the streets where people who are well-versed in wielding the sharp spear, gain victory over their opponents in the great Mayilai, where the crawling waves move about. Do you go with out seeing the festival on the star Ardra of Siva, who dwell in Kapālicharam which has gardens as cool as clouds;

In the streets of unbounded liberality of the residents in the great Mayilai, where beautiful ladies wearing bangles in their hands gather, dwelt with desire in Kapālīcharam which has does not know quaking, in the festival of the star of Karttikai which is ancient. Do you go without seeing the lighting of lamps in the evening of Tiruk Kārttikai by the young ladies who have rising breasts on which they have smeared white sandal paste?

Siva dwells permanently in the beautiful Mayilai which has a sea-shore garden of mast-wood trees which pour honey;  [Mayilai is the corruption of Mayilāppūr] desired Kapālīcharam [Mayilāppūr is the name of the place; Kapalicharam is the name of the temple].  Do you go without witnessing the food cooked and served to the groups of many Saivaite devotees who are united with Siva non dually beautiful lady like a portrait!
