He discharged an arrow on the forts by bending the bow.  He bore the floods (on his head) He is the pre-eminent one. He is in Nelvāyil where water is always flowing. He is very great to be worshipped. He is seated on my head.

Tiru Nel Vayil:

Verse 1:

புடையி னார்புள்ளி கால்பொ ருந்திய
மடையி னார்மணி நீர்நெல் வாயிலார்
நடையி னால்விரற் கோவ ணந்நயந்
துடையி னாரெம துச்சி யாரே.

God who is in Nelvāyil which has water as blue as sapphire in the small sluices which is in a stream and has crabs by the side of the fields. He wears a garment of loin-cloth four inches wide desiring it, as a mark of purity of his conduct he is seated on my head.

Arunachala Siva.

61. That in which the transcendence of qualities is evident;  indeed, wherein evidently
is blemishlessness, wherein evidently is eternal purity - be ever full of That.

62.  Wherein directly is the supreme Self, wherein directly is the joy of joys, wherein
indeed is knowledge and wisdom - be ever full of That.

63. Wherein indeed oneself is the Light, wherein indeed oneself is without a second,
wherein indeed lies the supreme bliss - be ever full of That.

64.  Thus the practice of being 'full of That' has been enunciated.  Practice this alone
ever and ever- Brahman am I, Existence Consciousness Bliss. Undivided am I, ever joyous.

65. I am wisdom that is Brahman alone.  I am He, the serene and the supreme.
I am Consciousness devoid of mind stuff.  'I' am not. I am resolved as He.

66.  I am That.  I am Consciousness. I am He. I am blemishless.  I am supreme.
I am the highest. I am verily the supreme. Divested thus pf everything, be happy.

67. All this residue of mind stuff spoils purity. Divested of all this, having forgotten
everything as mere dead wood.

68.  Renouncing the corpse like body, remaining ever as a log or a piece of metal,
casting aside remembrance too, abide in Brahman alone as the support.

69. One who listens to this explanation even once perhaps, even if one should be associated with great sins, is freed from all, and reaches me the Most High.

70.  Though shining in diverse forms you are unattached to them, so the Vedas proclaim. Though firmly associated in the heart cavern of all beings, you are the
undivided Ground, the Self.

Thus concludes chapter 29 entitled 'Topic of the teaching of being full of That' in
the sixth amsa called Sankara of Siva Rahasyam.

concluded.

It was once said that in life we are like people in a boat on a river.  We cannot see the shoals or rapids; but the guru sitting above and looking down on the boat can see the whole course of journey from the start to end.

We have a tendency to compare our lives with others.  Yes, some have more money,
more friends or better health.  This is a recipe for bitterness because we poison  our inner selves with wild swings of mood between grasping and self hatred or recrimination because we think we have failed.  Gratitude is the anti dote. If we but focus more on the blessings we enjoy but have taken for granted, we would see there is much to be thankful for.

Rarely is anything free in this world.  It is true that Bhagavan's Grace is free, but we
must work for it to become a permanent reality.  If we remember that a blessing is the beginning, we will realize that the responsibility is ours to walk in union with the light guiding us forward.  Then how do we know if what appears to be good luck may result in misfortune?  Like a precious jewel. we keep it carefully so that it is neither scratched through neglect nor lost through ingratitude.

Again, those lines of Shakespeare quoted in a previous editorial are germane:

There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in the shallows and in miseries.

(Julius Caesar, iv. iii.)

Atma Vichara is not unlike restraint.  We inquire into who is thinking, who is feeling.
Who is this 'I'?  The very question gives us pause to consider mindfully what we think or feel.  It gives us a space in which to discriminate between what is true and what is false.
Whenever we are in doubt we pause and wait until the right response we misidentify
ourselves with a notion of who we are that is wrong.  The space between thoughts,
created by self inquiry, gives us the opportunity to see things as they are, not as we wish them to be in that moment of stillness there is no projection of a thought, there is no confused doubt and there is no projection of wish fulfillment.

There is a story told by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa which illustrates what is essential
and what is irrelevant.  There was a small boat about to cross a river and in the boat
were a pundit and a villager. Because of vanity the pundit made a great show of erudition while the villager listened quietly. A thunderstorm arose as they made their way across the river.  The villager understood from experience that their boat would probably sink.  He turned to the pundit and inquired if he could swim.  The pundit said no and the villager then commented that though he did not know the Vedas like pundit, he could swim.

What is the most important tool we have if we wish to be free of confusion and ignorance?  It is a mind trained to discriminate between what is eternal and what is transitory.  Like the ability to swim we are saved from drowning in our sea of concepts.

There are many ways to train the mind which involve simple disciplines and cultivation of virtue.  Live a simple life as possible.  Do not unnecessarily argue as it is a waste of energy and creates resentment.  Avoid comparisons with others as we are all on a
different path, each traveling at their own speed and most with needs that are different from ours.  Keep the right company and avoid those who are malicious.
Do not judge others unless you are prepared to see from their side their side the challenges they face. Avoid gossip and the craving for public recognition.  It comes
down to one basic requirement: avoid negativity as much as possible . Be clean in body and mind.

There will be no sins in their wide world for those who are capable of reciting the ten verses which are like garlands and which came from the mouth of good Jṉana Sambandhaṉ, which did not praise any other deity, on the beautiful Pukali of the Lord who rides on a bull. [Sambandhar did not praise any other god except Siva.]

Padigam on Tirup Pukali completed.

The words of low people who eat their food standing (Jains), the words of the Buddhists, do not listen to them.  Wealth will increase if one goes to, and worship with both hands, Pukali where the Lord is permanent in the minds of the people who do not attach any great importance (to their words).

The Lord has a form like fire which grew in length when Vishnu, and Brahma, with four aces searched the nature of the feet and head the Lord who has good properties and who bathed in milk in the beautiful Pukali, is good.

The Lord has the young lady of the mountain who has breasts comparable to buds. He has love on his devotees. He destroyed the might of demon with the help of the mountain. People of this world! Invoke his blessings by worshipping the feet of the Lord who resides in the city of Pukali which has many parks.
