Sirkazhi:

Verse 1:

In Sirkazhi, of great bustle where the ships that sail on the accumulated waves, reach the shore with beautiful pearls, other precious stones and ornaments. The one who possesses a victorious battle axe!  Praising one who has a bull, the diseases of birth which cannot be cured by other means, will not reach those who can adorn the God with garlands.

11. renouncing remonstrance too, and thoughts created by the mind stuff, leaving aside everything within and being in a state of total void;

12. forsaking even the quiescent state and the oscillating silence thereby, the mind stuff -a feature of contrasting thoughts, and the world fancied by the mind;

13.  forsaking the 'I am the body' egoism referred to as the duality mode, 'I am the all witnessing Brahman' - such alone is the firm determination.

14, 15, and 16: Brahman is ever the doubtless - this is the witness mode. The duality
mode, and the undivided mode, which is the one undivided essence - thus, there are three modes in vogue in the world. The first is a rootedness in duality, the second is the doubt of the witness mode; the third is said to be firm certitude. Investigating the significance of the three modes and casting them aside, become settled.

17.  Abiding in the nature of the one undivided essence, always revel being full of that.  This is the instructions for practice, always the basis for practice.

18. Just as the sandalwood tree is tested, so is the supreme utterance, for reflection.
The three word sentence (Aham Brahmasmi - I am Brahman) exemplified, is to be
meditated upon subjecting It to reasoning.

19.  The import of the word aham (I) is the individual self - The word Brahman denotes Isvara, the Lord. The word asmi (am) symbolizes the state of the nature of being undivided.

20.  Inquiring with the mind, renounce the triad of words and attain the state of the one undivided essence.  This is the characteristic of liberation without the body.

We are faced with a world full of distractions that our mind is only too willing to indulge
in if given the opportunity. After all, that is what the mind is composed of: a mass of thoughts and feelings with no fixed center.  Our task is to center our thoughts into one continuous flow of pure thought (Aham Vritti). If we our home as being exclusively Arunachala Ramana, well and good because we can easily focus our attention just by the remembrance of physically being there.

Memory is a powerful tool that can immediately make us watchful.  The senses of smell and sound are particularly strong in this respect, the waft of Agarbathi or Jasmine all mixed up with the sounds of peacocks calling or the notes of Vedic chanting or Tamizh Parayana takes us there. That is why in part we publish so many photos of the Asramam precincts in the magazine.

For in the mind there is no distance. In one leap we can transcend all barriers.  We use the energy of memory to fuel one pointedness.  In sadness, in joy, in any strong emotional expression we have a potent instrument to bridge the gap between where we are and where we would like to be.  Above all, is the heartache of longing for the Beloved.

The mind is like a smooth plate; its purpose is to contain things.  Thoughts are like
knives, forks and spoons.  They are knobby and generally unstable especially when you carry them on an empty, flat plate.  It requires concentration to keep them from tumbling off.  Have you ever noticed a skilled waiter who carries plates through a crowded restaurant?  He is mindful and his progress through the room is like a ballet of consistent, premeditated motion. We should be like that waiter: aware of where we are going and at the same time fully mindful of what we carry.

When we read or speak the words they should come out of our body and mind.  When
we recite a verse we inhabit it.  Through direct intention we bring the words alive and they leap out of our hearts.  We become its speaker, its instrument.  We let its heart-
beat pulse through us as embodied experience. We now engage in a mutual participation with Bhagavan who is the precipitator of the verse.  The words are the catalyst which breaks down the doors of separation for we have called from one side of the door to the other side and there is a response if we but listen, uplifts us.

Have you noticed that we cannot control the words once we start reciting them?  They control and guide us if we but let go and trust.   One cannot technically say Bhagavan's words are mantras but His hymns to Arunachala can have the same mesmeric effect.  Even Bhagavan was profoundly affected when He composed Akshara
Mana Malai as if a dam had burst and a surge of divine inspiration overwhelmed Him
with a torrent of graciousness.

The problem, if it can be called that, is Arunachala is no meek mass of weak pity
and saccharine empathy.  It is a raw, remorseless power that buries itself in stone.
It is not for the fainthearted.  There is a mythic element to its presence which no reasoning ir conceited explanations can subdue.

Jnana Sambandhan, of Sirkazhi, which has cool water having beautiful waves,
on the king who dwells with desire in the temple in cool and beautiful Kuṭavāyil,
those who are capable of reciting these garlands of shining Tamizh verses, composed by him, will dwell in the heaven of fitting fame as the sufferings caused by depression of spirits, leave them.

Padigam on Tiruk Kudavayil completed.

The Buddhists who covers their bodies with a yellow cloth called sivaram, and the Jains, who have no purity, leaving the insulting slanderous words of those two people,
in Kuṭavāyil which has beautiful storeys. The Brahmins who have proper conduct to praise your feet without any decrease in the quality of their devotion, you have become attached to the glorious temple as your favorite temple.

Brahma, who is seated in a fertile lotus which has abundant honey, and Vishnu who rose tall, being a dwarf at first, to waver in mind with a gaping mouth out of wonder, you rose high as a column of fire you crushed the feet and the big crown of the king of  which he prized very much, Ravanan, you declared the temple in Kuṭavāyil which occupies a portion of the village, as your favorite temple [Note: In this verse the anecdotes of Vishnu and Brahma, and Ravanan are clubbed together.]

You have words containing truth in the songs of the Vēdas. You have a vehicle of a white bull which has greenish eyes. You performed the dance by name Akātāṇṭavam.
You have the power which is praised by the lady, Uma, in Kuṭavāyil where the superior variety of bee, Tumpi which settles on the white Malabar glory, lily hums and sings music. You were present in the temple which has been in existence since a distant past as your favorite temple.

You bathed in white sacred ash got from a cow on your holy body on which you wear cobras profusely. Receiving the alms that are put into the bowl of a skull, which you get by begging, you consumed the poison to be praised by the celestial beings who do not wink. In Kuṭavāyil where the beautiful gardens which have common bottle flower trees, spread their fragrance, you were shining in the beautiful temple as your favorite temple.
