Swamiji taught in Silence; many gurus of the highest caliber do that but his uniqueness
associated with the celebrated sage of very ancient times, Sri Dakshinamurthy.  Swamiji clarified all doubts by the power of Silence.  Thus, his emphasis was on practice (Sadhana) and on practice alone, because no degree of verbal instructions could ever purifiy the mind and prepare it for its destruction.  To teach in absolute Silence in this dark age is Swamiji's greatest contribution to India's rich spiritual heritage. 

Swamiji's teaching was simple; it was to make the mind silent (totally free of thoughts)  through the practice of meditation.  Apart from making an occasional cryptic statement on spiritual issues, his reply to any question was to do more meditation in order to know the answer.  Many got their doubts removed this way.   

Though Swamiji initiated devotees on all paths by infusing them with the power of Silence, his primary stress was on the path of yoga that stresses meditation (dhyana) to control the mind.  He taught the path of Atma Dhyana (meditation on the indiviudal 'I').  After initiation, students were told to concentrate on the brikuti (space between
the eyebrows) while ignoring the flow of thoughts.  This practice was meant to continue till one finally experienced the 'I' current in the Heart.

கருந்தடந் தேன்மல்கு கழுமல வளநகர்ப்
பெருந்தடங் கொங்கையோ டிருந்தஎம் பிரான்றனை
அருந்தமிழ் ஞானசம் பந்தன செந்தமிழ்
விரும்புவா ரவர்கள்போய் விண்ணுல காள்வரே.

On our Lord who was in the company of the lady who has big a broad breasts, in the fertile city of Kazhumalam where tanks of black mire and honey are on the increase.
The verses of chaste Tamizh composed by Jnana Sambandhan of rare knowledge of Tamizh, those who recite with desire these, will go to heaven after life in this world, and rule there.

People of this world!  Save yourselves by reaching the feet of the god, weeding out as useless the sharp pointed words of Buddhists and Jains, who wear mats tying them with cords. In the fertile city of Kazhumalam where gardens are as cool as clouds, thrive, is the noble-natured god who is in company with the lady who performed big charitable deeds, well?

நெடியவன் பிரமனும் நினைப்பரி தாய்அவர்
அடியொடு முடியறி யாஅழல் உருவினன்
கடிகமழ் பொழில்அணி கழுமல வளநகர்ப்
பிடிநடை யவளொடும் பெருந்தகை யிருந்ததே.

Being difficult even to think of him by the tall Vishnu and Brahma, the God has a form of fire whose head and feet could not be found out by both of them. அரக்கனார் அருவரை யெடுத்தவன் அலறிட
நெருக்கினார் விரலினால் நீடியாழ் பாடவே
கருக்குவா ளருள்செய்தான் கழுமல வளநகர்ப்
பெருக்குநீ ரவளொடும் பெருந்தகை யிருந்ததே.

When the demon who lifted the sacred mountain cried aloud from sorrow, God squeezed him with his toe when he played upon the long Yazh melodies. He granted him a sharp sword. (The name of that sword is Chandrahācam) in the fertile city of Kazhumalam is the noble-natured god who was seated with a lady who bestows increasing grace on devotees, well?

My mind!  Leave telling your grievances to others for redress when several blemishes surround you. With a lady wearing ornaments suited to her beauty who has a forearm full of bangles, in the fertile city of Kazhumalam which is made beautiful by dark gardens, is the noble-natured god who has matted hairs coiled into a crown on which the crescent moon whose surface increases in size progressively, well?

My mind!  You leave the anxiety thinking we have no place of refuge! God who has a flag on which is drawn the figure of a bull, the city which the celestial beings worship and then wake up from bed. In the fertile city of Kazhumalam which has mansions of tall entrance, is the noble-natured god who was seated with the lady whose gait is like that of the female swan, well?

My mind! You shake off laziness thinking we are having anxiety! In the company of the lady wearing suitable ornaments, and bright bangles on the forearm in the fertile city of Kazhumalam where in the fields the carp leap. Is the noble natured god was seated to praise him by uttering his many names, well?

பெண்டுணை யாகவோர் பெருந்தகை யிருந்ததே.

We can save ourselves from sufferings by performing devoted service to god.
In the fertile city of Kazhumalam the god who has flowers of Indian laburnan on which bees settle and a matted hair coiled like a crown on which there are flowers having honey, and a frontal eye, is the noble natured god who was seated along with the company of a lady, well?

Saying, the food of milk in the golden cup which is like the flower is harmful when my father was angry, god admitted me into his grace. He wears an ear-ring in the ear.
Is the noble-natured god who was seated with a simple-minded lady in the fertile city of Kazhumalam, well?

Tiruk Kazhumalam:  (Sirkazhi)

Verse 1:


மண்ணின்நல் லவண்ணம் வாழலாம் வைகலும்
எண்ணின்நல் லகதிக்கி யாதுமோர் குறைவிலை
கண்ணினல் லஃதுறுங் கழுமல வளநகர்ப்
பெண்ணினல் லாளொடும் பெருந்தகை யிருந்ததே.

One can lead a virtuous life in this world, daily.  If we think about it, nothing will be wanting for the final beatitude. All things pleasing to the eye will come to us of their own accord. Is the noble-natured god, who was seated along with the eminent lady in the fertile city of Kazhumalam, well?

Then, on the 1st August 1961, the divine guru, Sri Sankar Bhagavan, proclaimed him a yogi and named him Sivabala Yogi.  The divine guru instructed him to re-establish dharma (i.e the predominance of virtue over evil) and awaken latent spiritual power
in all those who sought his grace.  Further, he could grant salvation and initiate devotees on any path including that of Silence.  After the completion of tapas, Swamiji traveled across India and established centers for meditation (Asramas) at a number of places including Bangalore (his headquarters where he spent most of his time), Hyderabad, Sambar Lake, Dehradun and so on.  He visited the USA and the UK in the late 1980s and early 90's.  He shed his body on 28th March 1994, at Adivarpuppetta after his diabetes took a turn for the worse in 1991.  He was interred in the Asramam there on 2nd April as per local custom for the holy persons.

His divine guru had also given him a Mantra with which to neutralize the venom of snakes.  All these painful incidents took place because of the hostility that a sincere
yogi faces from the hostile powers that operate from the northern, eastern and western directions.  The power that dwells in the southern direction is peaceful and neutral.  This phenomenon may be better understood by a simile.  Imagine that an average individual's mind is agitated and uncontrolled because it moves in a clockwise direction. To bring it under control, the motion in the mind must move in the opposite direction, i.e. counter clock wise.  That is bound to be resisted and that is why it is so difficult to stop the flow of thoughts in the mind.  A guru's grace is a must to do so.  A yogi earns this power for a large number of aspirants and therefore encounters
major obstacles.

Sathyaraju began tapas facing the east till October 1953;  for the north, it lasted until August 1955;  for the west and south, it was completed in June 1956 and May 1957 respectively.  The last four years (August 1957 - August 1961) were spent doing tapas facing the east again.  During this period, he was enjoined by his divine guru to sit for tapas for twelve hours a day (4 am to 4 pm.).  The rest of his time was used to to be utilized for rest, sleep, bath, meeting devotees and initiating them on the path of yoga.
