Verse 149:

In the clan of Siva-Brahmins who serve Ammai-Appar
In unbroken traditional  family, he did divinely
Incarnate, to uplift the world freed of its flaws,
As the son of lofty and noble Sadaiyanar
And his immaculate wife Isaijnaniyar.

In that great land, beauteous and prosperous, is a town
Endowed with the wealth of tapas immense
Meriting the avatar of him who would cause
The flourishing of the Vedic Saivism; it is indeed
Tirunavaloor, the eternal abode of Brahmins
Who would never from the path of truth swerve.

பார மீசன் பணியல தொன்றிலார்
ஈர அன்பினர் யாதுங் குறைவிலார்

Their wreaths are wrought of rudraksha-beads,
Their habiliments are but rags;
Service to the Lord is their sole duty, nought else.
Milk of loving kindness wells up in them;
They lack nothing. Can I ever
Describe their peerless valor in words?

Both prosperity and adversity;

Adoration of the Lord in love is their sole goal;

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: December 31, 2015, 06:31:33 AM »

Once G.V. Subbaramaiah, had brought his two young daughters, Lalita and Indra, to the Asramam.
The younger one Indra, who was hardly 5 years old was quite mischievous.

In the Hall, some devotees at that time were asking Bhagavan Ramana, how to remain still [to remain Summa], amidst various work in the world.  Bhagavan Ramana said that it is all in the mind.  If the mind could be quelled and made to stay in the Self, within, any amount of work could be done, without
desire-ship and doer-ship. Meantime, Indra, was moving here and there in the Hall. She was pulling out books, Bhagavan Ramana's stick, alms-bowl, the time-piece near the sofa etc.,  Bhagavan
Ramana asked:  "Amma, what are you doing?"  Indra replied:  " I am not doing anything.  I am remaining Summa."

Everyone laughed.  Bhagavan Ramana also laughed and said:

"See, this is how the worldly work should be performed!"

Perseverance is the only way.  Mind does not chatter in deep sleep.  It chats un-inturruptedly while one is awake or in dreams.  Western philosophers and psycho analaysts like Freud, did some
research only about wakeful state and dream state.  They were trying to give some sleeping tablets
for sleep.  It is Gaudapada who attacked the problem in his famous Gaudapada Karika and his
commentary on Mandukya Upanishad.  He is the man who had gone much more beyond the Western
psychologists and told about the inter-relationship between Jagrat, Swapna and Sushupti states.

Perseverance is the only way. One suggestion that Bhagavan had said:  If you cannot control your thoughts, please hold on to one thought.  One nama of god.  This is the only other way to control our thoughts.

4.  Nevertheless , there are those who somehow manage to obtain this rare human birth, together
with bodily and mental strength, and an understanding of the scriptures -- and yet are so deluded
that they do not struggle for liberation.  Such men are suicides. They clutch at the unreal and destroy
themselves.

5.  For, what greater fool can there be than the man who has obtained this rare human birth together
with bodily and mental strength and yet fails, through delusion, to realize his own highest good?

6. Men may recite the scriptures and sacrifices to the holy spirits, they perform rituals and worship
deities -- but, until a man wakes to the knowledge of his identity with the Atman, liberation can never
be obtained.  No, not even at the end of many hundreds of Brahma's years.

7. The scriptures declare that immortality cannot be gained through work or progeny or riches, but
by renunciation alone.  Hence it is clear that work cannot bring us liberation.

Again, what we can do to fix our minds and hearts on Bhagavan in  whatever shape or form or bhava
(attitude) suits us best.  With practice, we can overcome the Pramada (willful forgetfulness) that
makes us think we are separate.  Our devotion is answered though not necessarily in the form or result
we imagined.  That our sorrow is lessened and our doubts and confusion cleared to the point where
they seem quite irrelevant in the face of an overwhelming sense of peace, is evident to all who enter
the ambit of Arunachala Ramana.

On a purely physical level we know the speed of light is some 1,86,000 miles per second.  We also
know that the speed of thought is faster than light.  What if there is something which is faster than
thought?  How to think of it, or imagine it?  We cannot because our mind is an instrument of thought.
But what if there is 'something' which transcends all sense of difference?

Bhagavan said repeatedly that He and the Self are one and the same and our mistake is to identify
Him with a body and mind.  Let us accept for a moment that what He says is true and not just  nod
our heads blindly and pay lip service to this insight.  If Bhagavan is not the body or the mind then
who is 'He'?  And if are to believe Him, that He and we are one and the same, who then are we?

Later, one of the other disciples asked Acharya as to how, without going through the process of spiritual
practices like inquiry, meditation, or without receiving instruction from a guru, this boy could attain
Self Realization. The Acharya replied: 'Once a highly evolved saint was sitting on the bank of a river when
a woman went near him and requested the saint to take care of her two year old child as she was going
to take her bath.  The saint who was meditating did not notice the baby.  The baby crawled away and
fell into the river.  Picking up the dead body of the child, the woman started crying aloud.  Taking pity
on the mother, the saint used his powers and entered into the body of the child and brought life to it.
This woman was the wife of Prabhakara and her child, who inherited all the qualities of the saint has grown
up as a young lad.'

During the next few years, the Acharya brought about a spiritual renaissance in the country through
his inspired discourses and popular works like Atmabodha, Aparokshanubhuti and Vivekachudamani.
However, over the centuries, the questions contained to crop up as to why the mind could not be at
peace.  Seekers continued to ask why the Self could not be realized even after years of rigorous
contemplation.
