Verse 2 of 6.097:

Does His body dazzle like the young sun, concorporate with the bejeweled lass? (Uma)
Is He with a white Bull?
Is He endowed with a fire that crackles and throws up its sparks?
Does He wear the tusker`s hide?
Is He white threaded?
Is there a streaked and speckled snake on His matted hair?
Is there a young moon on that matted crest?
Is there the flowing water?
Does He have a spear?
Pray, Describe to me our Lord,
as you have beheld Him.

The following 11 verses are of General nature, not on any particular temple.  This is composed and sung
by Tiru Navukkarasar.

Versee: 1. 6.097:

The Tirutthaandakam is of sacred interrogation:

Is there any mark of His transcending the universe?
Is that a dance where fire is held in the hand?
Is He adored and hailed by the seven hoary saints?
Does He go forth surrounded by the bhootha- hosts?
Is the neck a trifle dark?
Is there an eye above the eyes?
Is He followed by a throng of servitors?
Pray, describe to me our Lord as you have beheld Him.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: September 29, 2015, 08:11:50 AM »

Bhagavan Ramana's Jayanti (His birthday) used to be celebrated in the Asramam even during His days.
Once there was one such Jayanti celebrations and I think it was Golden Jubilee Jayanti, in the year 1940,
that is His 60th birthday.  It was an elaborate function and devotees and other eminent personalities
had attended.

A programme comprising of speeches from various persons was fixed.  The detailed programme
chart was shown to Him.  Bhagavan Ramana, as usual kept silent.  Then the devotee asked Him:
Do you want these to be changed?  Bhagavan Ramana continued to keep silent.  Then the restless
devotee asked Him:  Bhagavan!  You kindly tell us what You like.  Bhagavan after a pause said:
If you ask me, I like only to keep summa!  This is the Silence, silence of words, mind and the mind
resolving into the Self, eternally.

Bhagavan Ramana has said in Who am I? "Since the Self is within five sheaths, to attain It from
books which are outside is not possible.  Rama to know that He is Rama does not require a mirror!"
There is no point in reading scriptures endlessly."

Even reading books is not necessary.  Bhagavan Ramana's life tells only this.  Because Atma Jnana
cannot be captured by mind. It can be captured only beyond mind.  Not seeing the rope
will never be a problem. Only seeing the rope as a snake is the problem.  This is ignorance and this
ignorance will not go by merely reading the books.  If one reads the books, he should see the purport
of the book and not its meaning intellectually.

Manikkavachagar completed Tiruvachakam.  He went to Chidambaram Temple to see Nataraja.
The huge gathering headed by the King asked the saint: "What is the meaning of your book?"  Manikkavachagar said:  "This meaning is only He" and showed Nataraja and then disappeared as
a flame into Nataraja Siva!

Once Natesa Iyer, who was working as a kitchen assistant in the Asramam, asked Bhagavan Ramana:  "Bhagavan!  Everyone here seems to know everything, they are all knowledgeable.  I do not know anything!"

Bhagavan Ramana said:  "Do not worry, you are ignorant.  They are all in learned ignorance.  There is no difference.  Have Sraddha in my words.  That is adequate."  Natesa Iyer merged with Bhagavan
Ramana in 1980s.  Upadesa Saram, Verse 27 says exactly the same thing.  "The true
Jnana is one where there is neither knowledge, nor ignorance.
This is the Truth.  There is nothing else to know."

We are always the Self.  But we are not able to permanently abide in It.  When one abides in Self,
say temporarily, he gets the glimpse or foretaste of the Self for that temporary period.  It can be for
even many days and many months, but the mind is not extinct, and the mind jumps out.  Many seekers,
it is my experience too, abide in It for sometime.  But not permanently.  Once Devaraja Mudaliar
was complaining to Bhagavan Ramana, "I am not able to withdraw in It."  One day, he sat very close to Bhagavan's sofa.  Suddenly, his mind curled up into the Self.  He lost mind body consciousness.
He was feeling extremely blissful.  A few minutes passed.  Suddenly Bhagavan Ramana, who was looking hither then looking at the Hill, turned His face towards Mudaliar.  Devaraja Mudaliar asked Him with
tearful eyes:  Bhagavan!  "Is It That?"  Bhagavan smiled and said: "Oye! That is It!"  Thus Bhagavan,
out of abundant Grace, gave him, a foretaste.  This is Guru Krupa.  It is the Power of the Presence.
When seekers found it difficult, the Guru lends a helping hand, with his abundant grace.  Here only, the surrender, Saranagati, comes into play.

We should love the Self and depend on the Self.  But we should deal with the world but fear the world.

Sarvam Vastu Bhayam, says Barthruhari the famous Sanskrit poet. All worldly objects should give us also a sense of fear and not merely elation.   A healthy man fears sickness, a learned person fears that there
could be a more learned person to beat him, and a handsome person may be afraid of disease and
decay to his handsomeness.  The greatest fear for all these, is death, marana bhayam.

The only fearless state is Self abidance and it is death-less-ness.    This is what Nachiketas asked
Yama to give.  Yama wanted to divert Nachiketas with wealth, kingdom, good food and nice dancing girls.  Nachiketas asked:  Will they not become old and decayed?  Will they not reduce in quantity and quality?
Keep these dancing girls with you.  I want only Deathlessness, where there is no fear and death.
(Katha Upanishad).

Sankara says as to what to do to ward off this fear and death. Run for the Guru, Run as if your head is
on fire!  Run quickly Do not say, Tomorrow.  Do not say:  I shall go after watching this TV serial.
Will you wait for tomorrow or the completion of the TV serial, when your head is on fire?

Saint Manikkavachagar says in Tiruvachakam, Yathirai Pathu, Verse 7, Decade on Pilgrimage:

"This world is not going to stand for ever.  Hence, we shall also
not stand here for long.  Let us go to the lotus feet of Siva, our
God with golden hue.  Do not delay, do not stand here.  IF YOU
STAY BEHIND AND DELAY, He will become rare to obtain!"

Once there was some discussions in the Old Hall.  The devotees were debating about He and She
(Annamalai and Unnamulai). Someone said that there is no He without She.  In fact He (the
word) is within She (the word).  They were looking at Bhagavan Ramana for a suitable answer.  Bhagavan Ramana said:  Yes. No doubt. But He can live without She.  She cannot live without He.  All word play only.  But it contains all meanings.

The same will hold good with Destiny and Free Will.  They are like Egg and Hen example of Gaudapada.  Do not discuss, whether Destiny is first or Free Will is first.  Gaudapada and Sankara (later in his commentary
of Karika) say:  Do not worry about the egg and the hen.  Break the egg and throw it on the field.
Crush the neck of the hen and throw it on the field.  See the field, the Prakruti, Earth.  And then see
the root of this earth and all the other elements, mind, ego and intellect.  Stay with the Self, the Brahman.

Once a devotee came and asked Bhagavan Ramana: "When I meditate, there are mosquitoes biting me.
What should I do? Should I kill them or leave them?"

Bhagavan Ramana smiled and asked him:  "What do you meditate?"

The devotee said: "I am meditating that I am not the body!"

Bhagavan Ramana said:  "Then, it is the same thing that mosquitoes are also telling you.  They are
biting you to remind you that you are not the body, you are not the body!"
