Why is it that the Jiva is changing i.e.growth and decay?

The Jiva, getting identified with the mind, feels 'sometimes I am in a sorrowful state and sometimes
in the joyful state'.  Thus the Jiva becomes one with or is submerged in the changing condition of
the mind.  So the Jiva is called changeful.

In deep sleep, the mind gets dissolved and disappears.  How can there then a reflection as Jiva
as stated by you?  If there is no reflector, there can be no reflection.  The Jiva is therefore non
existent.  How can a non existent Jiva be a witness of the state of sleep?

According to the rule or proposition that the witness should be the same for all three states,
it is the same Atman, the original witness of all the three states.  It is easy for you to understand
that one and the same Atman is the witness of waking and dream states.  As the Jiva has growth
and subsistence, the state of witness-hood cannot be attributed to the Jiva, as the Witness should
be unchanging.  The Atman is unchanging, without growth or decay. So only the Atman can be the
witness of all the states.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: December 05, 2015, 06:51:27 AM »

Bhagavan Ramana's own philosophy [which is of course, the only true philosophy of this universe],
is reflected in His own works.  But in His life, He had to meet several people, with different
backgrounds/levels of maturity. Therefore He had to water down the message depending upon
the devotee.  These replies, should not be taken out of context. One cannot pick up one or two replies
and say that this is the final teaching of Bhagavan Ramana.

Take this illustration:-

1. Once Dilip Kumar Roy sang some nice songs and then asked Bhagavan whether the music
alone sung in devotion to god, would confer him liberation.  Bhagavan Ramana said:
"Why not? Pursue this with conviction."

2. To Devaraja Mudaliar, who got excited by some Tiruppugazh songs which were sung in
the Hall, asked Bhagavan Ramana, whether singing Tiruppugazh alone could take one to liberation.
Bhagavan Ramana said: "O Mudaliar! Go behind these songs and see the mounam, Silence
which is all pervading."

David Godman, in one of his talks with some Westerner has said that it is quite rare to witness
a person like Bhagavan Ramana who is both enlightened and saintly.

I also agree with him.  There are only two in my view where both saintliness and enlightenment
were together.  One is Bhagavan Ramana and the other is Chandrasekhara Saraswati
of Kanchi Math.  Both were extraordinary.

There are many people who were enlightened but not saintly, at least, in outward behavior.
Seshadri Swamigal and earlier Kaduveli Siddhar [about whom I wrote] were
such types.

There are many who are saintly in their disposition but not self-enlightened.  There are numerous
examples which I do not want to quote here.

Devaraja Mudaliar writes in his entry of 2nd Feb 1946 of Day by Day:

One Ananda Swami from Mount Abu, put the following questions and received the answers:

Q:  The books say that the Purusha is angushta pramana. What is meant by this?

Bhagavan: Evidently the books must be referring to the upadhi in which the Purusha is manifesting.
They cannot mean that the all pervasive Purusha is angushta pramana.

Q:  Is that Purusha in the heart?

Bhagavan:  You mean the physical heart.  It cannot be. But the books describe a heart which is
an inverted lotus with a cavity inside and a flame in that cavity and all that. In such a psychic heart
[Heart], the Purusha may be said to abide and the flame may be of that angushta pramana,
the size of a little finger.

[Bhagavan describes this Heart in Sad Darsanam, Supplement.
But He has described it to the devotees only on a few occasions
like this one.]
