மனைவியார் தம்மைக் கொண்டு
    மறைச்சிவ யோகி யார்முன்
சினவிடைப் பாகர் மேவுந்
   திருப்புலீச் சுரத்து முன்னர்
நனைமலர்ச் சோலை வாவி
   நண்ணித்தம் உண்மை காப்பார்
புனைமணி வேணுத் தண்டின்
    இருதலை பிடித்துப் புக்கார்.



He took his wife with him: to take the oath
Before the Brahmin -- the Siva-yogi --, he came
To the tank girt with flowery and honey-laden garden
Fronting the temple  Tiru-p-Pulicchuram;
He and his wife, each holding the one end
Of a beauteous bamboo-staff descended into the tank.

Verse  36:



அருந்தவத் தொண்டர் தாமும்
   அந்தணர் மொழியக் கேட்டுத்
திருந்திய மனைவி யாரைத்
    தீண்டாமை செப்ப மாட்டார்
பொருந்திய வகையான் மூழ்கித்
   தருகின்றேன் போது மென்று
பெருந்தவ முனிவ ரோடும்
   பெயர்ந்துதம் மனையைச் சார்ந்தார்.

When the great devotee of tapas heard the Brahmins
Pass thus the verdict, he would not disclose
His incapacity to touch his wife; he but said:
"I'll perform the immersion in a fitting manner."
He beseeched the great muni of tapas to go with him,
And then homeward plied his steps.

திருவுடை யந்த ணாளர்
   செப்புவார் திகழ்ந்த நீற்றின்
உருவுடை யிவர்தாம் வைத்த
   வோட்டினைக் கெடுத்தீ ரானால்
தருமிவர் குளத்தின் மூழ்கித்
    தருகவென் றுரைத்தா ராகில்
மருவிய மனைவி யோடு
   மூழ்குதல் வழக்கே யென்றார்.



The Brahmins announced their verdict thus:
"If you had truly lost the bowl of this person
Who glows with the stripes of the holy ash,
And if this giver thereof bids you take an immersion
You are bound to do it with your loving wife."

நீணிதியாம் இதுவென்று
   நின்றவிவர் தருமோடு
பேணிநான் வைத்தவிடம்

பூணணிநூன் மணிமார்பீர்
   புகுந்தபரி சிதுவென்று
சேணிடையுந் தீங்கடையாத்
   திருத்தொண்டர் உரைசெய்தார்.

"O ye Brahmins whose chests are decked with
Sacred threads! He who is here gave to my keeping
A bowl, and said that its worth was immense;
I kept it guarded; I know not how it vanished.
It has happened thus." So spake the divine devotee
Who is not to be touched by evil, even distantly.

நறைகமழுஞ் சடைமுடியும்
   நாற்றோளும் முக்கண்ணும்

மறையவனித் திறமொழிய
   மாமறையோர் உரைசெய்வார்
நிறையுடைய வேட்கோவர்
   நீர்மொழியும் புகுந்ததென.

Concealing His matted hair of natural fragrance,
His shoulders four, triple eyes and the blue hue
Of His throat, when He, the Brahmin, spake thus,
The great Brahmins said: "O potter of sterling qualities!
Narrate truly the happenings."

Verse 32:


அந்தணனாம் எந்தைபிரான்
   அருமறையோர் முன்பகர்வான்
இந்தவேட் கோவன்பால்
   யான்வைத்த பாத்திரத்தைத்
தந்தொழியான் கெடுத்தானேல்
   தன்மனைவி கைப்பற்றி
வந்துமூழ் கியுந்தாரான்
   வலிசெய்கின் றான்என்றார்.


Our Lord, the Brahmin (in disguise) preferred
His complaint before the great Brahmins thus:
"This potter would not return to me the bowl
I entrusted to him; had he truly lost it
He could hold his wife by hand, take a dip
In water and be done with it; he would not do it;
Obdurate is he." Thus He.

Muruganar says in Sri Guru Ramana Prasadam:

Versse 198:-

My natural duty, as I perceive, is to dwell without thought upon
those feet that abide in Holy Silence, flooding my consciousness
with bliss.  This is the state of liberation, the holy silence in which
the ego that thrives on the mind's confusion is rendered powerless
and disappears completely.

Verse 204:-

He caused a flower of light to unfold in the state of pure consciousness, so that the disastrous error
of a body-mind ego faded.  That radiance grew ever brighter with my love until I realized the flawless knowledge of the Self manifesting as the unbroken awareness I, I, within my heart.

Verse 213:-

Drawn by his magnetic charm I have sought shelter at the lotus feet of Sri Ramana whose teaching
is eternal, so that the murky twilight of the illusory world, created by the trickery of the senses,
has faded in the clear light of dawn like turmeric left out in the sun.*

(*  Turmeric loses its color when exposed to sunlight, and becomes
white.)

Dear Graham Boyd,


It occurred to me last night (not in dream).  Apart from your medication, you can follow the following:

1.  You can take the Vibhuti from Asramam, the Vibhuti applied to Sri Ramaneswara Maha Lingam
and then take it with water.

2.  You can apply the Vibhuti along with sandal paste on the skin above the rib which has been
affected by the cancer.

3. You can persuade Asramam authorities to give you one of the water pots used by Bhagavan and after
cleaning it, you can fill water and take it in tumbler along with the Vibhuti.

4. If Asramam authorities permit, you can sleep in front of Sri Ramaneswara Mahalingam at night
and after prayer and going around the Lingam say, eleven times every night, you can sleep there,
praying to Sri Ramaneswara Mahalingam saying Arunachala Siva, as many times as possible before
sleep overtakes you.

Today is Thai  Poosam, Makara month, Pushya Nakshatra day.  This day is important for Lord Muruga.
In all the six important abodes and in all Murugan temples, today is celebrated as a festival day.
After abhishekam, alankaram and arti, the Muruga is prayed to by all devotees.  This day is also
a celebration day for Muruga Temples in Malaysia, Singapore. and other places in which there are
Murugan temples.  In Delhi, there is one Uttara Swamimalai. Here too there is good alankaram and
arti.

In many temples, they give anna dana,  (food) for devotees who had come for the darshan.
In Pazhani, Panchamirtham is given after puja.

In an answer to a questioner, Sri Ramana employed the procedure known as pancha kosa viveka or
'an inquiry into the five sheaths' to elucidate the meaning of adhisthana. He said, 'Ask yourself the
question.  The body  (annamaya kosa) and its functions are not 'I'.  Going deeper, the mind (mano maya kosa) and its functions are not 'I' (Talks 25).  Continuing deeper, Bhagavan says the intellect (vijnanamaya kosa) that perceives thoughts is only the sheath of 'I' and not the 'I' itself.  Finally, He concludes, ' 'I' am beyond even sleep; 'I' be now and here and what I was all along in sleep and dreams also, without the qualities of such states. 'I' must therefore be the unqualified substratum underlying these three states (anandamaya kosa transcended).  'I' is, in brief, beyond the five sheaths. Next, the residuum left over
after discarding all that is non self is the Self, Sat Chit Ananda.'  (Talks $ 25)

Another questioner asked about the Sahaja state and Bhagavan  answers employing the analogy of a
reflection in a mirror and of a movie screen.  When one sees the pictures on the screen one does not see
the screen.  But without the screen no pictures will be seen.  As an analogy, the screen is eternal while
the pictures come and go.

The word 'green' is not the same as the experience of the color 'green'  Thought and language, or words
and concepts, are merely an attempt to communicate what has been experienced, and are merely conceptual.
For a person who has not experienced, before the color 'green', the concept or the word 'green' does not lead
to any knowledge about 'green' in his mind.  The finger points out to the moon, but you should look at the moon
and not the finger.

So, in a way all conceptual knowledge is merely symbolic. Hence, any knowledge about Brahman or Self
captured in the words (which is the medium of thinking by the mind) cannot be knowledge, but merely
the finger pointing to the moon.  You have to experience Brahman or Self yourself to know what it is all
about and not expect the words to deliver you such knowledge.

Grace on the path:


The question is how does one enter the state of non desire.   Obviously, the simplest and most direct
way would be through a clear recognition that nothing in this world can ultimately satisfy or fulfill.
Bhagavan Himself made this point repeatedly.  In response to one questioner, He said, 'What happiness
can you get from things extraneous to yourself?  When you get it, how long will it last?' (The Teachings
of Ramana Maharshi, Osborne.)

On another occasion, Sri Ramana used the story of the Buddha to illustrate this idea:

'When he was in the palace with all possible luxuries in the world, he was still sad.  To remove his sadness,
his father created more luxuries than ever.  But none of them satisfied the Buddha.  At midnight he left
his wife and child and disappeared.  He remained in great austerity for six years, realized the Self, and for
the welfare of the world, became a mendicant. It was only after he became a mendicant that he enjoyed
great bliss.  (Letters from Sri Ramanasramam, Suri Nagamma, Letter 164.)

Super Imposition:


Verse 137:

This is the bondage of the individual -- to take the non Self as the Self;  and from that bondage comes
birth, death, and myriads of different sufferings due to ignorance, -- the ignorance by which one takes
this unreal body as real, and nourishes it and tries to preserve it by the objects of senses, as the silk
worm preserves its cocoon.

Verse 138:

Covered by tamas, the food who has no discrimination through darkness, thinks that what really is
not, is.  Just when one takes the rope as the serpent, different kinds of disturbances arise.  Therefore,
taking the unreal as the real -- that is the bondage.

Verse 139:

That One, indivisible, eternal knowledge who is full of endless glory, is veiled by this quality of tamas
as the dragon swallows the sun.

Verse 140:

When the pure, effulgent Atman is covered by tamas, -- when that light is taken away -- being
deluded, the fool takes the body as the Self. Then comes desire, anger (from non gratification of
desire), and then rajas, whose name is scattering.  This decentralizing forces comes and brings pain.

Verse 141:

When the Atman is situated thus, the fool is in the mouth of the great crocodile of delusion in the
shore-less ocean of the world, where the objects of senses are the water that is poison.  First sunk
and then raised, he is full of ignorance and suffers pain.

Of impeccable character, -- the adepts in the four Vedas --,
The infinite One fared forth; drawn by exceeding love

   மன்னுவன்யா னெனச்சொன்னார்.



"You return not what you received; to disprove theft
You'll not hold your wife's hand, soft as shoot,
And take a plunge in water; you are sure adamant;
I'll now have recourse to the Court
Of Thillai-Brahmins." Thus He, and hied away.
