Who then is to protect me
The day Death approaches me?

Verse 1 of 7.097:  Tiru Nanipalli:

ஆதியன் ஆதிரையன் அயன்

ஓதியன் உம்பர்தங்கோன் உல

Siva, is the source of all things.  He has the star Ardra, as his favorite star.  He is the Light that
Brahma and Tirumal, could not know.  Being Himself the words and their meanings, He recited
with the proper intonation the four elaborate Vedas.  He is the Chief of the celestial beings, in heaven.
Nanipaḷḷi is the place that Our Lord,  who is the chief of all living being in this world, dwells.

Arunachala Siva.

Verse 1 of 7.096:  Tiruvarur ParavaiyuL Mandali:*

(* The temple where Paravai, the wife of Sundaramurti, prayed to Siva.)

Siva,  worshipped by Sage  Durvasa!  Will You not protect those who perform service to You, from
sufferings?  Though the five senses prevent me, from approaching you keeping and vigilant watch
over me.  The five senses are spoken of as rational beings out of anger.  Say alas to me, who am
always saying good words about You only by my mouth, O  the Chief who is dwelling in ParavaiyuL
Mandali!

Verse 1 of 7.095: Tiruvarur.

Siva,  in Tiruvarur!  The humble servants who do not swerve from that state, without desiring any one
except Yourself.  Being the ever humble servant to you only, always without any chance of redemption,
burning internally like the fire that is smoldering without visible flame, and not wishing to reveal their
distress, pining away so that the sufferings can be patent on the face to be known to others. If they
express their distress in so many words, you are quite indifferent to that.  Let you prosper though
devotees might suffer troubles.

Verse 1 of 7.094: Tiruch Chotruthurai:

அழல்நீர் ஒழுகி யனைய சடையும்
உழையீர் உரியும் முடையான் இடமாம்
கழைநீர் முத்துங் கனகக் குவையும்
சுழல்நீர்ப் பொன்னிச் சோற்றுத் துறையே.(1)

Chotruthurai,  which is on the bank of the river Ponni,  (Kaveri)  in whose eddies heaps of gold
and pearls of fine quality got from bamboos are whirling, is the place of Siva, who has matted locks,
which is like fire that flows like water, a deer, skin flayed from a tiger and an elephant.

Verse 1 of 7.093:   Tiru NaRaiyur Chitiswaram:

நீரும் மலரும் நிலவும் சடைமேல்
ஊரும் மரவும் உடையான் இடமாம்
வாரும் மருவி மணிபொன் கொழித்துச்
சேருந் நறையூர்ச் சித்தீச் சரமே.(1)

Chittiswaram,  in Naraiyur, where the scooping streams reach sifting precious stones and gold,
like a winnow. This is the place of Siva, who has a crawling cobra on His matted locks, where water
and flowers are shining.

Verse 1 of 7.092:  Tirupukkoliyur Avinasi:

எற்றான் மறக்கேன் எழுமைக்கும்
    எம்பெரு மானையே
உற்றாய்என் றுன்னையே உள்குகின்றேன்
    உணர்ந் துள்ளத்தால்
புற்றா டரவா புக்கொளி
    யூர்அவி னாசியே
பற்றாக வாழ்வேன் பசுபதி
    யேபர மேட்டியே. (1)

Siva,  who has worn as ornaments dancing cobras that live in anthills!  The Master of all living beings!
The One who is in an exalted place!  The one who is at the temple Avinasi in Pokkuliyur, I think of You
in my mind realizing that Our Lord in the relations in the seven births, I shall live having you as my
support.  By what reason shall I forget you!

Verse 1 of 7.091: Tiruvotriyur:

The temple of Siva,  who destroys the accumulated acts of those who wander praising the fame
of Siva,  in verse and prose of ordinary people, is Otriyur which has waves which drive the big
ships that are seen on the ocean and small boats used for fishing to the shore.

The state of Self Realization:

Words cannot express that state and that state can be attained either by reading everything or not
reading at all.  It all depends on one's prarabdha.  Surrender is difficult in the sense that it implies ego-destruction, and that ego renders its own destruction difficult.  For both Atma Vichara and Sarangati,
ego-destruction is a must.  This is the major hurdle.

When Sivaprakasam Pillai asked Bhagavan Ramana:  Who is the greatest among devotees, bhaktas?  Bhagavan Ramana replies:

One who gives himself up to God and be an Atma Nishtapara is the greatest devotee, bhakta.
This "giving oneself up" means only annihilation of the ego.

Bhava-bhakti or ardent devotion to Siva is the connecting string of all devotees of Siva in Periya Puranam.  This devotion is displayed by devotees treating Siva as Father, Guru, Mother, Child etc.,

Once Tiru Neela Nakka Nayanar and his wife went to Siva temple, for offering pujas.  In the inner
sanctum, when the puja was going on, Nayanar's wife saw a spider crawling over the body of Siva.
She felt that the spider would harm Siva, so she gave a long exhalation by bending towards the image
to drive out the spider!  Neela Nakka got angry with his wife since she had caused sacrilege to Siva, by mouthing out the breath, full of dirty air and saliva.  He left her at the temple and came back home
and closed the doors denying entry for his wife.   In the night Siva appeared before him in a dream and
said:  Look at my body, excepting for the area where your wife breathed out air, in all other places, the
spider had bitten me and it is all full of red scales!  Nakka woke up and understood his wife's bhava-bhakti
and her purpose.  He came back to the temple and apologized to his wife, prostrated before Siva for
the ill-treatment to his wife and both returned home.  This intense devotion is nothing but Sarangati in a different form and this takes one closer to Godhead.

Once there was a gentleman, I think, Ramaswami Iyengar in the Asramam, who was devoted to
Bhagavan Ramana to such an extent, that he did not even mention His name.  Once he saw a visitor addressing Bhagavan as Ramana.  He went and slapped him.  The visitor also understood the reason
and apologized.

Verse 1 of 7.090:  Kovil (Chidambaram):

My mind!  Not living by performing service to His foot which is bent in dancing, even in the days
when you enjoy worldly pleasures, like eating and dressing well.  Having prevented you from being
doomed and directing your life according to His desire,  these are the actions of God when the servants
of Yama Dharman, god of death, oppress and torment you, then also he saves you from that and bestows
His Grace on you.  One who dances holding in His hand the hand drum, a hollow earthern lamp with fire
and a snake which moves angrily spreading its hood.  We have definitely got the great Lord in
ChiRRambalam, (Kovil or Chidambaram), in Puliyur*, what else is there to get ?

(*One of the name of Chidmabaram, where Nataraja is dancing.)
