Recovery is really based on four principal ideas.  The first is that as an addict or a family member you are
utterly 'powerless' over drugs, alcohol or any other addiction.  The second is that because of this the only
choice is to turn to something bigger than yourself ... your sense of a higher power or the sacred.  For some
this higher power be just the power of the group they go to.  The third is realizing that your thinking, in its
attitude and behaviors has been disturbed by the addiction or the addict and you accept that you want to
change your attitudes and behavior.  The fourth is that you can only keep the gift of healing that you have
received if you give away by helping others.

Perhaps the most liberating principle of 12 step programmes for addictions is religious freedom.....
freedom from the religion. It can be anything you see it as.  The unifying principle has been echoed
repeatedly.  On the portals of the temple of Delphi were written two things.  'Everything in moderation
and Know the self.'  'Christ said, 'The kingdom of God is within'.  Shakespeare said, 'This above all-to-
thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day thou canst not be false to any man.'  Vivekananda said, 'It is a blessing to be born in a religion and a tragedy to die in one.'  Sri Ramana
Maharshi said, 'Happiness is your nature.  It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside
when it is inside.'

He looked at it for a long time waiting to open its wings but it just seemed to wriggle about.
Eventually he placed it by the open window where he thought the air would help it.  He went off
to ask his Granny for her help.  She came back with him but the creature was lying on its back with
its legs straight in the air as if dead.  His Granny said, 'When a butterfly is trying to get out of its cocoon,
it struggles so hard that its heart beats faster and faster until its blood pressure gets very high.  The very
high pressure forces blood into the wings so that they open up, thus breaking open the cocoon.  It is
the only way a butterfly wings can open.'

The loved ones of drug addicts and alcoholics usually support their illnesses and cover up all of their mistakes
and shortcomings.  But this only prolongs and prevents the addict and their family from getting proper help.
Family and friends think they can control and cure the addictions but they are unmanageable diseases which
can only be arrested.

Referring to the addict for medical or psychological help usually wastes time because most doctors,
psychiatrists and psychotherapists are not experts in this area.  It is recovering addicts or recovering
alcoholics themselves who are the experts. The proof is simply that they are 'clean' and sober and largely
remain 'clean' and sober.  Any other therapy is usually either a waste of time or will only eventually lead
to Narcotics /Alcoholic Anonymous, so that they might as well go straight to Narcotics /Alcoholic Anonymous
to start with.

The drug addict / alcoholic may have some other problems which can be helped by the therapy but this
can only happen later on.  The primary problem must be spelled out and acted on first, otherwise it risks,
and may encourage, denial and avoidance and can perpetuate the problem.  A person who goes to Narcotics
Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous will learn something that they can learn no other way.

Most drug addicts or alcoholics who stop taking drugs or drink without using their resources offered for support and development by Narcotics /Alcoholics Anonymous remain as fragmented addicts or sober drunks.
Usually their block in going to Narcotics /Alcoholics Anonymous is obsessional fear simply due to their lack of
emotional tools and skills. Ironically Narcotics /Alcoholic Anonymous is just the place where they will find these
emotional tools.

Similarly anyone who had had to suffer and endure living with a drug addict / alcoholic is usually wounded
on so many levels of consciousness that there is no point in thinking they can get adequate help from well
meaning doctors, psychologists and psychotherapists. They are best helped by friends and families of other
drug addicts /alcoholics who have worked through this and who are therefore experts.  They offer hope that there is a way out for families and friends to avoid being overwhelmed by a drug addict / alcoholic and their

Families and friends need to understand how to deal with their emotions and their sense of their 'inner self'.
They need to look again  with another 'understanding family' to try to see the drug addiction / alcoholism
with loving non attachment. They can then reconnect with others, their 'inner self' and their sense of the
sacred. Their boundaries, attitudes and relationships can then at last begin to improve as they recover.

Today is the punar vasu star day of the month of Masi,(Kumbha), in this year English year 2015. 
Bhagavan was born on a puna vasu star day of Margazhi.  The Asramam celebrates the puna vasu star day
of every Tamizh month, with special pujas for Sri Rmaneswara Maha Lingam. The Lingam, is first
done abhishkham with coconut water, milk, curds, and ghee.  Then alankaram is done with various
flowers and the Lingam is adorned with golden casket, with new dhotis around it. After the puja,
arti is shown.  Thereafter, nice lunch is arranged for inhabitants of the guest rooms and also special

Let us read two of the verses of Glance of Grace, from Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai:

Let us meditate on Ramana
The Teacher of Reality
Who dwells within my inmost Self'
As I, as I,
Bringing in full measure
The joy of silence
Ending the delusive pride
Of a divided self's self love.


In one unbroken silence let us dwell
On the twin Feet of the Guru
Glorified above all kings
Because His glance of grace revealed
The Hill of bright Awareness
Shining in a world
Troubled by darkness of desire.


I also give one verse of Desika Padigam, the verses which Muurganar tried to read in front of Bhagavan
when he met Him for the first time:

Guru Ramana, Siva, as once you left
Mount Kailash and the company of Gods
And came to cool Perundurai to drink in
The sparkling words of Vachakgar
Now again you have come to fair Aruna town
Wishing to hearken to this fellow's pueril words.

In the final analysis, there are no human means by which to account for evil in the world. We can only
stand facing the abyss of a mystery.  Finally let me end with some words from Etty Hillesum who died
with her whole family in the camp at Auschwitz.

I have already died a thousand deaths in a thousand concentration camps and yet I find life beautiful
and meaningful, from minute to minute.  It sounds paradoxical but by excluding death from our life
we cannot live a full life, and by admitting death into our life we enlarge and enrich it. For I know now
that life and death make a meaningful whole. I cannot find the right words for this radiant feeling which
encompasses but is untouched by all the suffering and all the violence.  And if God does not help me to
go on, then I shall have to help God.(...) How good and beautiful it is to live in your world,  O God, despite
everything we human beings do to one another.  Sometimes when I stand in a corner of the camp,
my feet planted on Your earth, my eyes raised toward Your heaven, tears of deep gratitude run down my
face. There are many miracles in this life. (An Interrupted Life - The Diaries of Etty Hillesum,  1941-43.

It is only such an abiding insight which can thoroughly penetrate the sensuous world appearance and
make one permanently realize that it is not radically different from the Void itself. This explains why two
inspired little treatises intended for advanced theosophical aspirants contain certain paradoxical statements.
The one, Light on the Path, based on an old Egyptian source, first gives admonition:  'Seek the way by
retreating within', and then, only after this has been done, gives further admonition:  'Seek the way by
advancing boldly without'.  The other, Voice of the Silence, based on an old Tibetan source, tells the
developed aspirant:  'Thou hast to study the voidness of the seeming full, the fullness of the seeming Void.'

With this the student arrives at the grand climax of all his ultra mystical endeavors and must bow in awed
homage not only before the sacred emptiness from which all things flow, not only before the holy darkness
which is the source of all light, but also before the visible world which is so secretly and ineffably rooted in
God, before the incessant activities and living processes which make up the beginningless and endless
history of this marvelous universe itself.

Men marvel at this or that new thing which science discovers in the world, but they do not realize that the
greatest marvel is that the world itself should exist at all.  Whoever sees that every atom of this earth
scintillates mystically within the all- containing universal life, whoever comprehends that there is no
spot from which the One existence is absent, realizes that the human adventure is as sacred as anything
else.  He understands too that man's everyday existence is itself as mysterious, as momentous and as
miraculous as the unseen and ineffable existence of any archangel could be.     

The concept of and this transcendental insight for those who stupendous one ever gestated in the human
mind.  And yet such supreme sagacity, such a mature and complete penetration into the fundamental
character of all existence is really nothing more than  the natural intelligence of man brought to its best pitch.

After that apparition, Chadwick recovered and resumed his visits to the Old Hall. England herself was
saved. Denied the air superiority he needed to mount a full scale invasion, Hitler launched the Blitz.
So, while London was reduced to rubble, Chadwick sat and meditated in the Old Hall. He must have
known that nobody was going to thank him for this. No Englishman was going to admire him, or even
understand what on earth, he was doing.  As for the Indians, though they might be his friends on a
personal level, many were against him as an Englishman. Alan, in short, had given up the world for
Ramana. And at some point of time during the crisis he was called upon to formalize the sacrifice.

It all came to a head when a notice appeared in the press saying that British nationals were required
to report to the British Society.  Of course, Cjhadwick still  could not bear to look at a newspaper,
and might have missed this summons entirely if Bhagavan had not spotted it and brought it to his
attention.  Chadwick duly reported as required, and the inevitable duly happened. Although he was
too old to fight, Chadwick was certainly not too old to make himself useful. As a former Major and
pioneer, he was too valuable an asset to be left moldering in some Indian hermitage while England
was bracing herself for invasion.  The War Office accordingly summoned him back to London.  Chadwick
had been called up.

I felt Lord Skanda most keenly at the great temple of Arunachaleswara in the nearby town of Tiruvannamalai.
Initially the experience of the temple was more important for me than the Asramam.  The temple of
Arunachaleswara still holds much of the vibration of Ramana, who was its child and where He stayed and
practiced 'tapas'.  It has its own Divine presence as well that has nourished many sages and yogis.
The Devi there functions as the mother of Ramana and Skanda and as the mother of all. I can feel her
as my own spiritual mother.  The great Siva linga, similarly, is like Ramana's father.  The deities in the temple
became alive as the parents of Lord Skanda, who was not only Ramana, but my own inner spiritual seeking.
It was in the Mother temple I felt the strongest energy and unfoldment. The story of the birth of Uma,
her marriage with Siva, and the birth of Lord Skanda began to unfold in my meditations as a symbol
of the process of Self realization.  The myth became real compared to which our human lives are mere shadows.  The realms of these deities (Deva lokas) emerged as states of meditation.

One day at the temple I decided to purchase a statue to take back home for my altar. There I found a small
statue of Lord Skanda, that I bought and put into my nap sack. One of the Brahmin priests in the temple
noted what I had done.  He gestured to me and asked for the statue, which I gave to him. Then he led me
through the temple and placed the statue on all on all the chief murtis, doing the appropriate puja.  He
started with Devi and then to Siva Linga, and then to Skanda temple. It was as if I myself was reborn as
Skanda during those pujas.

Birth, growth, transformation, decay, disease, decease  -- free from all these, and who is the
cause of creation and its destruction -- Thou art That.  Think this in thine own self.

Verse  259:

In whom all difference ceases, like a vast sheet of water without any waves, ever free, undivided,
One, Brahman -- Thou art That.  Think this in thine own self.

Verse  260:

Who is one, the cause of many, but who has no cause, and is separate from cause and effect, self
existent, Brahman, -- Thou art That.  Think this in thine own self.

Verse 261:

Free from all change, without any doubt, which is different from destructible and indestructible,
the Supreme, ever blissful Brahman -- Thou art That. Think this in thine own self.

For his each stage of life, they sacrificed fittingly
To their sylvan gods, in festive worship.

    மலர்மழை பொழிந்த தெங்கும்

The tusks of elephants rained pearls;
The bamboos too showered their pearls;
The foresters too showered their gems;
The hills also rained their dazzling gems;
These apart the heavens too showered flowers,
As speckled bees and beetles wheeled their flight;
Not only the small-grained Tudis but celestial Tuntupis also
Resounded great from the ethereal realms.
