2.  The greatness of Siva:

வேதத்தை விட்ட அறம்இல்லை வேதத்தின்
ஓதத் தகும்அறம் எல்லாம் உளதர்க்க
வாதத்தை விட்டு மதிஞர் வளமுற்ற
வேதத்தை ஓதியே வீடுபெற் றார்களே. (2)

GREATNESS OF VEDAS
Vedas Proclaim Dharma

No Dharma is, barring what the Vedas say;
Its central core the Vedas proclaim;
And the Wise ones ceased contentious brawls,
Intoned the lofty strains and Freedom`s battle won.

1. Siva Paratvam - The greatness of Siva as the Primordial God:

சிவனொடொக் குந்தெய்வந் தேடினும் இல்லை
அவனொடொப் பார்இங்கும் யாவரும் இல்லை
புவனங் கடந்தன்று பொன்னொளி மின்னுந்
தவனச் சடைமுடித் தாமரை யானே.

Siva Is Nonpareil

Search where ye will, there`s no God like Siva,
None here below to equal Him in glory;
Lotus-like, He, of gleaming matted locks,
Fiery in splendor, beyond the worlds, apart.  (1)

We come to Tirumandiram, the 10th Tirumurai.   This is by a Yogi, Tirumoolar:
I have already covered some verses of Tirumandiram earlier. However, here, I shall give some verses.

1. Vinayka worship:

INVOCATION OF VINAYAKA

Adoration to the Holy Feet enshrined in my Consciousness
The Feet of His, whose arms are five,
Whose face has the Elephant`s majesty,
Whose single tusk rivals crescent moon,
Who is the darling child of Nandi
And who is wisdom pure and overflowing.

Arunachala Siva.

Words cannot express that state and that state can be attained either by reading everything or
not reading at all. It all depends on one's prarabdha.  Surrender is difficult in the sense that it
implies ego-destruction, and that ego renders its own destruction difficult.  For both Atma Vichara and Sarangati, ego-destruction is a must.  This is the major hurdle.

When Sivaprakasam Pillai asked Bhagavan Ramana:  Who is the greatest among devotees, bhaktas?  Bhagavan Ramana replies: One who gives himself up to God and be an Atma Nishtapara is
the greatest devotee, bhakta.  This "giving oneself up" means only annihilation of the ego.

Bhava-bhakti or ardent devotion to Siva is the connecting string of all devotees of Siva in
Periya Puranam.  This devotion is displayed by devotees treating Siva as Father, Guru, Mother,
Child etc.,

Once Tiru Neela Nakka Nayanar and his wife went to Siva temple, for offering pujas.  In the inner
sanctum, when the puja was going on, Nayanar's wife saw spider crawling over the body of
Siva.  She felt that the spider would harm Siva, so she gave a long exhalation by bending towards
the image to drive out the spider!  Neela Nakka got angry with his wife since she had caused
sacrilege to Siva, by mouthing out the breath, full of dirty air and saliva.  He left her at the temple
and came back home and closed the doors denying entry for his wife.   In the night Siva
appeared before him in a dream and said:  Look at my body, excepting for the area where your wife
breathed out air, in all other places, the spider had bitten me and it is all full of red scales!
Nakka woke up and understood his wife's bhava-bhakti and her purpose. He came back to the temple
and apologized to his wife, prostrated before Siva for the ill-treatment to his wife and both returned
home.  This intense devotion is nothing but Sarangati in a different form and this takes one closer to
Godhead.

Once there was a gentleman, I think, Ramaswami Iyengar in the Asramam, who was devoted to
Bhagavan Ramana to such an extent, that he did not even mention His name.  Once he saw
a visitor addressing Bhagavan as Ramana.  He went and slapped him.  The visitor also understood
the reason and apologized.

Verse 119 of Ozhvil Odukkam:

Even the Advaitins, who assert that all that they know objectively is false, cannot escape being trapped
in an empty Void.  Like them you will be destined to repeated births and deaths.  However, having experienced the loss of your ego-consciousness, and the Bliss that arises thereafter, if you transcend even these, birth and death will end for you.   (119)

The danger, even for the Advaitin, is that, having realized the essential emptiness of all phenomena,
if he does not then eradicate the consciousness, the formerly perceived the world and now perceives an
empty void, he will remain trapped in that empty void, unable to grasp the dynamic reality of the non dual
Self. Bhagavan said:

'In all books of Vedanta you will find this question of a void or of nothing being left, raised by the disciple
and answered by the Guru.  It is the mind that sees objects and has experiences and that finds a void
when it ceases to see and experience, but that is not 'you'.  You are the constant illumination that lights up
both  the experiences and the void. It is like a theater light that enables you to see the theater, the actors
and the play while play is going on but also remains alight and enables you to say that there is no play
when it is all finished.' (Day by Day with Bhagavan, 21st July 1946.)

The falling away of the individual consciousness is succeeded by one of deep bliss.  However, since there is
still some trace of consciousness experiencing these states, they too cannot be the final state, and they
too are transcended in the final state of  union with the Self.

May our Thillai ever be. May servitor`s tribe increase, dismissing treasonous dissenters.
Entering the well-wrought Auric Hall, for worlds to flourish, He, the spouse
of young Uma of swan-gait, conferring on us the seekers of His feet, gnosis great
to snap the onward birth-chain. Blessed we hail that zealot to abide for Eternal eons.

With this 9th Trumurai completed.

Dweller in Thillai with carp-frisking fields!
As my girl for days on, think of how you ate
Sea-spat venom and saved devas, in mirth,
She dotes on you, with her lustrous forehead.

When devas needed His help, He ate venom that welled up.
But, why should he steal my lustrous bangles and let me die of love?
Big veined honey-beetles ring in Thillai-
There in the hall of the conscious dances our Lord.
Acts He, indifferent to me; does not end my grief.

The Panchama note in the heptad scale is heard, from drone bees that plough the fragrant buds;
Campaka garland and even time dizzy us that our bosoms in stays languish.
To redress, opulent Siva of Thillai spatium fair with gemmy towers lofty
Has not given us darshan.
Who else is there to solace me with grace cheering up saying `Fear not`?
My desire for Lord is extremely killing my life can`t bear.
