சுலவிவயிற் றகம்கனலுஞ்
   சூலைநோ யுடன்தொடரக்

   கொண்டணையக் குலவரைபோன்
றிலகுமணி மதிற்சோதி
   எதிர்கொள்திரு வதிகையினில்
திலகவதி யார்இருந்த
   திருமடத்தைச் சென்றணைந்தார்.


With the burning ache wheeling its singeing course
In his stomach, led on by a welling-up desire great,
Plodding his weary way he reached the divine matam
Of Tilakavatiyar, that stood fronting
The rock-like fort-wall of Tiruvatikai.

The question we need to ask is: what is the most important thing that we need to do with our lives? 
Leave aside the duties of supporting and raising a family.  Leave aside the necessity of earning a living.
The most important duty we have to ourselves is to be true to our nature, our "swadharma",
and this at whatever the cost for who does not agree with Thoreau's observation that, "Most men
lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them."

Bhagavan Ramana did not encourage people to renounce the world.  He advised dispassion and
questioning of the assumptions we automatically make ourselves and others.  We lead for the
most part a mechanical existence whether we are aware of it or not.  We take our opinions from
newspapers and TV news channels.  What Bhagavan Ramana advised was discrimination
between what is eternal and what is ephemeral. We should be wary of an easy escape by thinking
that we can do nothing.  Thoreau said:  "As if you could kill time, without injuring eternity!" 
Time is precious.  Bhagavan's daily routine was fixed by the clock.  He would go for days without
speaking and yet the Asramam would be unaffected because there was a discipline and purpose
to each activity, which gave the day momentum and meaning.  In the midst of activity Bhagavan
sat in silence and moved as if alone.  There was a solitude to Him which was impervious to the round
of events.  He was the Sun around which the devotees spent their days and thoughts. His
constant and unfathomable abidance in, for want of a better word, what we call the Self, was a
source of joy and awe for those who were open to its manifestation.  The few words He
spoke, the small amount of literature He wrote, were all cherished for nothing was wasted.  Each
word was meant, each gesture had significance.

One wonders what Thoreau would have made of an encounter with Bhagavan.  One imagines
Thoreau would have found in Bhagavan the answer to his search for meaning and in a face to face
encounter words would have been discarded.  For Thoreau wrote: "Could there a greater miracle
take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?"

During his last years, Thoreau suffered from incurable tuberculosis, and slowly faded away over
a number of years. But he was writing articles for journals even in bed as an invalid.  When his aunt
asked him: "Whether he had made
peace with God", Thoreu replied:  "I did not know we had
ever quareled!"

Among his last dying words were:  "Now comes good sailing!"

Let us leave Thoreau the final word:  "It is not what you look at, that matters, it is what you see."

Today is Jagadish Swami Day - His Liberation Day:

I am not sure who is this Jagadish Swami.  He must have come to the Asramam during last years of
Sri Bhagavan or after His merger with Sivam.  He stayed in the Asramam and also in the Hills for some
months and after following Sri Bhagavan's path, must have attained merger with Brahman.

"We can conceive of no limitation in an infinite nature and that which is limitless cannot by its nature be
understood.  And so every desire for the  Beautiful which draws us on in this ascent is intensified by the
soul's  very progress toward it. And this is the real meaning of seeking God: never to have this desire
satisfied.  But fixing our eyes on those things which help us to see we must keep ever alive in us the desire
to see more and more. And so no limit can be set to our progress toward God; first of all, because no
limit can be put upon the beautiful, and secondly because the increase in our desire for the beautiful cannot
be stopped by any sense of satisfaction."

Saint John of the Cross is universal because he appeals to something deep within man. He achieved harmony
of vision and wisdom by placing the spiritual truths in the crucial test of experience, and only experience can
convince man.  Man sees the spirit by the light of his own inner spirit that is God.  The radiance of eternal
beauty shines over the universe.  In moments of contemplation we can see the Eternal, and this is the
most important message of Saint John.

15: தண்ணளிக்கு என்று, முன்னே பல கோடி தவங்கள் செய்வார்,
மண் அளிக்கும் செல்வமோ பெறுவார்? மதி வானவர் தம்
விண் அளிக்கும் செல்வமும் அழியா முத்தி வீடும், அன்றோ?-
பண் அளிக்கும் சொல் பரிமள யாமளைப் பைங்கிளியே.

அன்னையே! அபிராமித் தாயே! இசையை எழுப்பக்கூடிய அழகிய இன்சொல் கூறும் எம் பசுங்கிளியே! நின் திருவருள் நாடிப் பலகோடி தவங்களைச் செய்தவர்கள் இவ்வுலகத்தில் கிடைக்கக் கூடிய செல்வங்களை மட்டுமா பெறுவர்? சிறந்த தேவேந்திரன் ஆட்சி செய்யக்கூடிய விண்ணுலக போகத்தையும் பெறுவர். மற்றும், அழியாத முக்திப் பேற்றையும் அடைவார்கள் அல்லவா!

O Mother Abhirami!  You are like a green parrot with musical good words!  Those who do crores of tapas
seeking Your grace, will they attain only the wealth of this world?  They will also get the Heavenly stay
and pleasures obtaining there where Indra is ruling. Not only that, they will also attain the state of
liberation!

Each time we open a page of His writing, verses and songs there is an opportunity for affirmation.
We believe that by reading or chanting we engage with the same truth He endowed on those who
surrounded Him in the days of His physical presence.  But words Bhagavan wrote or said are not dead
if we allow them to enter us. With our breath we make sounds that create anew the truths He revealed.
With our intention we make fresh in the heart the words which empower us.  It does not matter how
many explanations, commentaries, anecdotes are available, they count for nothing if we fail to capture
their intent and spirit.

What we are doing in fact is engaging in an inner adventure of wonder and participation.  By this act
of remembrance we are not repeating by mindless rote but are giving birth in ourselves to a sense of
wonder, joy and a profound mystery.  Because in the end., we do not find the 'answer' but rather, engage
in a perpetual mystery.  Those who think there is a magic pill that solves all misery are mistaken. There is
however a growing inner confidence that Bhagavan's Grace will carry us forward though we are blind to
the next step.  We learn to trust with all will be well.  Did He not say that if we take but one step then
He will take the other nine?

Verse 135:

When a stick of firewood is burnt up completely there is no more smoke or flame, and when a disease
is cured, the medicine that was taken to cure it disappears with it.  Similarly your ever ramifying
actions are at the level of the mind (and will end when the mind ends).  Why then do you attempt to unite
(with the Self by means of those actions)?  Simply remain as a pure subject, without a second, just as a
smaller shadow is subsumed in a greater one.

In the first comparison the log of wood is compared to the actions of the individual, and the smoke of fire
to the mental faculties and ego consciousness of the individual. When actions cease, there will be no mental
activity and ego, just when the log is consumed there will be no more smoke and fire.  In the second
comparison, the disease is compared to the ego, and the actions of the individual to the medicine.  When
the ego subsides into the Self there will be no further actions, just as when a disease is cured, there will
be no further need for the medicine that cured it.  In Siddhanta actions with their fruits are the
consequence of succumbing to the illusion of the ego, and they are also ultimately a means for the removal
of that illusion.

Translated literally, the last sentence means, 'Remain (nil) with that which is opposite (ethir) having gone
(poy), as shadow is hidden.'  In other words, remain without the duality of the knower and thing known,
which is the habitual mode of the mind.  Since the mind arises out of the Self, and is fundamentally no
different from it, all it needs to do to realize its unity with the Self is to cease its discriminating activity,
at which point it will be no different from the Self, so long as it does not resume its discriminating activity,
just as a smaller shadow is subsumed in a larger one until such time as it moves beyond the boundary
of the greater shadow.

Chapter III - Experience:

10. Liberation

215.  Illumination, Happiness, Immortality, Solitude, Liberation, Union with God, the Natural State,
Nirvana, Birth, the Good Goal, Renunciation.

216.  Non lying, Silence, the Bursting of Bonds, the Fulfillment of All Desires, the State Without
Mental Taints, Peace, Having nothing to do, Extinction of Mind.

217. The Highest State, Perfect Devotion, the Supreme Speech, Self Rule, the Heaven of the Self,
God's Fullest Grace, -- these are some of the names of the Experience of the Self.

218.  When the mind becomes calm through the extinction of the ego, who is there subject to bondage?
This ego is itself bondage and subject to bondage;   there is no bondage otherwise.

219.  There never was any bondage for the Self who is the only Reality (there is);  He is ever free and
aware;  the One that is bound is the illusory Jiva (ego).

Attaining Self Awakening:

Verse  479:

According to the direction of the Master, and following the scriptures, knowing the real state of his own
Self by his own reasoning, controlling all his senses, and by his mind being intent upon his own soul,
the disciple for a time became still like a rock -  immovable and fixed in the Atman.

Verse 480:

And after staying there for some time, with his whole mind in the Supreme Brahman, he came
back to his consciousness, and with the great delight expressed these ideas:

Verse 481:

The ego is gone. Desires have melted away by attaining oneness with the Supreme.  Now I do not
know this or that, or what or where is the end of this Eternal Bliss.

Verse 482:

I cannot express by words, nor even contemplate by mind, this wealth that I have found in this ocean
of the Supreme Brahman, which is full of the nectar of bliss.  Only by tasting a particle of that, my mind has
become merged in that ocean of bliss and is at rest.       

Verse 483:

Where is it gone? Who has taken away this world of duality?  I saw it this moment.  Is there no world?
Has it come to naught?  It is most wonderful indeed.

Verse 484:

What to avoid, what to accept, what is separate from me, what is different in this ocean of  Brahman
which is filled with the nectar of indivisible bliss?

மெய்தருவான் நெறியடைவார்
   வெண்புடைவை மெய்சூழ்ந்து
கைதருவார் தமையூன்றிக்
   காணாமே இரவின்கண்
செய்தவமா தவர்வாழுந்
   திருவதிகை சென்றடைவார்.


To quit the false Jains for good and to reach
The goodly path of Him of Truth absolute,
He wound himself with a cloak of pure white,
And leaning on them that would help him walk,
Left for Tiruvatikai, the city of saints, by night unseen.

When thus the redemptive thought rose up in him
He chose an implement it; bewilderment then quit him;
He threw away his garment of mat, sling-borne jug
And the bunch of peacock-feathers; up he rose and moved away.

He reached Tiruvatikai and espied without
The fragrant garden the saintly matron;
He worshipped her and exclaimed: "I am here
By the hest of your brother." Hearing this
She asked: "Has aught of evil him befallen?"
