142.  The objectivity of the world is also asserted on the ground that it appears the same to diverse
seers.  But the Master refutes the argument by asserting that the diversity of observers is unreal.

143.  As in dream, so in waking, this diversity of souls is only mental creation, since in deep sleep,'
which is mind free, this diversity does not appear.

144.  The mind itself creates the world in waking, as it does in dream.  But the mind does not know
that this is its own creation, in waking, as in dream.

145.  The mind creates the world subject to a superior power (Avidya Maya) and therefore is unable
to create it to its own liking.  The mind, believing the world to be real, is deluded and suffers the woes
of samsara.

146  This is the very nature of the mind, that takes as real all that it creates, as is seen in a dreaming,
witnessing dramas, or listening to stories.

51.  Siva is pleased to bless him who relies not on fruits of destiny (accrued from merits of past lives)
but who fords the spiritual currents amidst the worldly tides.  Such a harmonious endeavor is upheld
by the scriptures.  Unruffled by the debate as to whether the ultimate fruit is the result of one's pious
effort or divine grant, one must continue to strive in efforts mundane and spiritual.

52.  From the ultimate standpoint there is none other than Siva Mahadeva to grant fruits.  The diverse
branches of the Vedas vouchsafe diverse results.  Such values are assigned to the practices by Siva
Himself, who is the true experiencer and therefore the authority also.

53. Again, the Vedas are the solid proof of the truth that Siva is the dispenser of fruits. Siva, the Isvara
(Lord), enables one to realize this.  Siva and the Vedas are inseparably related.  The Vedas proclaim the
state of supreme bliss and the means of attaining them. Siva vouchsafes the realization of these theories
to the one who puts them into practice.

Having been raised as a Catholic I wondered about the strange ways of a God who could give us prophets
and saints hundreds of years ago, who were now no longer to be found.  We seemed forsaken.
I read Be Here Now by Ram Dass, the American disciple of Neemkaroli Bala, and quickly became aware that
such saints abound in India even today.  From that point onward i could not sit still, and set out making plans
to go find them for myself. I had by that time learned the all important principle that it is the Guru who draws
devotee to him, despite the devotee's feeling that it is he who is exercising his free will in deciding to find the

My trip to India in 1977 entailed flying from Toronto to London, hitchhiking to the English coast, taking a ferry
to Holland, and then hitchhiking from there into Germany, Denmark, back down through Germany, Austria,
Italy and Yugoslavia till I reached the Greek Islands.  I traveled in an inspired mood and planned especially
to visit the island of Crete in Greece, which I had heard was a spiritually charged place.  I spent six weeks
in the Mediterranean on the three islands of Corfu, Crete and Rhodes.  I had set out to hitchhike as far as
it proved worthwhile mode of transportation, but that half died in Italy and became hopeless in Yugoslavia.
So from Greece I traveled by bus through Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, Pakistan and into India.

Verse 60:

She prayed for deathless devotion blissful and she
Prayed again: "I seek birth-less-ness; should I be
Born again, then let me never, never forget You;
Also let me pray for the boon to hymn in delight,
O Holy One, near beneath Your feet when You dance."

When He graciously addressed her as "Mother"
She hailed Him as "Father", fell at His roseate feet
Of lotus and rose up; the Lord who is decked
With the ear-ring of white chank, graciously eyed her
And asked her: "What may your prayer be?"
the adoring servitor bowed and then spake.

"She that comes, O Uma, is truly a Mother that fosters Us!
She prayed for that glorious form and was blessed with it."
Then as she neared Him, He addressed Her with that
One unique word "Mother" that all the worlds
Might stand redeemed.

The ascent with its head!" Unto our Goddess
The Lord spake graciously thus:

The daughter of Himavant of bow-like brow,
Who is concorporate with Her brow-eyed Lord who sports
As a chaplet the ever-young crescent on His head,
Cast Her look of grace on her.

With a speed exceeding that of the mind
She traveled fast the realms in the north;
She came near the Mount Kailash of pervasive radiance
Where abides the Wielder of the Trident, decked with
A garland of Konrai blooms burgeoning in serried order;
She durst not tread with her feet the holy ascent
But measured it with her head.

Scared by her form, she thought thus: "If the Lord
Of celestial beings be pleased to know who I am, of what avail
Are these remarks by the men of earth, strangers to truth?"

What is the meaning of brahmacharya?

Only inquiry into Brahman should be called brahmacharya.

- Sri Ramana Maharshi,  Spiritual Instruction, Chapter II.

Arunachala Siva.

In 1975, at the age of 27,  I experienced a spiritual rebirth during a long hitchhike through the U.S. and
Canada.  The first phase was seeing a brighter side of life and people as basically good and benevolent
rather than, as i had thought prior to the journey, evil and selfish.  This attitude had been partly the result
of reading the newspapers too much and listening to daily news -broadcasts about disasters and the
deceitful behavior of people. I had become a cynical pessimist.

My renewed interest in spirituality came through Eastern influences that proved a refreshing relief from
the hell-fire and damnation that was the message received from the religion of my childhood.  I began
reading many books from various sources including the Sankhya philosophy of Hinduism and popular
Western works on Eastern philosophy and religion.  Alan Watts' beautiful works on the playfulness of God
especially inspired me. I learned of Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda but was never
able to find it in the time in the Western bookstores I searched, though it must have been there.  At a later
date the book did come into my life and exerted a powerful influence.
