General Discussion / Re: Laghu Vasudeva Mananam:
« on: December 02, 2015, 11:23:47 AM »
When you were questioned 'What is the Atman?' you said it is different from the three bodies
and gave signs and attributes of these three bodies, by which they could be recognized.   In the
same way, can we not determine the  Atman  from its positive signs or attributes?

Brahman  infills everything, and in fact there is nothing excepting Brahman.  The Brahman Himself
is the Atman of everything and everywhere. (i.e. as Pratyagatman) according to all Upanishads.
Thus Brahman and the Atman being the same, the Atman can be understood as of the nature of
Sat, Chit, and Ananda.

Uruttirapacupati Naayanaar

Pasupati of Andhanar* clan in chank,  rich
Tiruttalaiyoor ever immersed in waters,
Remained, neck deep, day and night,
Kept on chanting Sri Rudram sweet and dear
To Lord's will and wish and rendered
The chant to the garlanded Lord. To him darshan He gave, in grace.

Murti Naayanaar

In an urb with lofty auric mansions and towers,
Murti daily smeared the ground sandal
Upon the Lord's linga  form. By the vain rover
Thugs of Samana's tricks sandal wood could not be

In stop-less service, Samana's perished; He was powered to attain Lord's feet.

Surrender is the way.  In the world every being is created and one becomes the food of others.
Even human beings who are vegetarians have to kill the plants to eat food.  A fly is eaten by a lizard,
a cow by tiger, a tiger killed by a man etc.,  This chain continues ever and for ever.  We can at best
help the suffering beings to the extent possible.  Suppose we save a deer from tiger, the tiger would
look at us and ask: Who are you to prevent my food?  We have no answer.
Surrender to God or Guru is the best way.  All things are done by one Parameswara Sakti.  Our job is
to stay away from thinking that I shall do this or do that.

Keeping Still:

For most of us, the tendency is to do this or that.  Mind
always jumps out with the least provocation.  BEING STILL
is the most difficult job for most of us.

Gradation in Spiritual Reality:

Science admits of gradation in reality. For example,  Newton's law of gravitation was once thought
to represent the reality concerning gravitation.  But, it was later found inadequate to explain certain
phenomena, and the general theory of relativity had to be resorted to take them also into account.
But Newton's law is not discarded, as it is found to suffice for many routine applications, and is by
far the simpler use.  It is considered as the 'lower' level of reality, and relativity theory as the 'higher'.

Spirituality, similarly, admits of different levels of reality. In regard to creation, for example, it
puts forward three stand points: srishti drishti, drishti-srishti and ajata vada.  Each succeeding level
is higher than the preceding one. The srishti drishti vada says that God created the world and the
individual, and administers them in accordance with certain laws.  The law of karma is an important
one among them.  It seems to offer a ready and plausible explanation for unexpected outcomes
in life.  But t leaves certain questions unanswered, such as how karma originated at the very beginning
of creation, and why in spite of being created by God, we are impelled to commit evil and suffer
thereby.

The teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi / Re: Our Bhagavan-Stories
« on: December 01, 2015, 04:08:05 PM »
The Best of Friends:

Bhagavan and Chadwick:

continues...

So it was that, within a few weeks of this conversation, Chadwick settled in the Asramam on a
more permanent basis.  In February 1936, he moved into little cottage which he was to occupy,
with only one interruption, until his death in 1962.  It was a very small dwelling for such a large
man to inhabit, and a very modest one for a relatively wealthy Englishman of independent means.
Indeed, by any worldly standards Chadwick's new home was not large, but in spiritual terms
Chadwick's cottage was the Taj Mahal. To live at the feet of Arunachala was already a rare blessing,
but to have your own personal dwelling within the confines of Sri Ramanasramam itself was beyond
all good fortune. This extraordinary privilege has only ever been extended to two or three others,
and Chadwick will always remain the only Westerner to have enjoyed it. From now on, Alan
Chadwick and Sri Ramana were almost next door neighbors,  separated from each other only
by the short walk along the edge of the Pali Tirtham tank. Having personally supervised the constriction
of Chadwick's cottage, the Maharshi further blessed his arrival by attending the consecration ceremony
in person.  Shortly afterwards, when Alan was temporarily away from the Asramam, Sri Ramana
gave further evidence of His solitude by noticing a leak in the guttering, and instructing Annamalai
Swami on how to repair it.
