26.  Mental calm, sense control, withdrawal from worldly pursuits, fortitude, faith in the words of
Guru, steadiness in Sadhana -- these six are prescribed for the aspirant, whereby his mind will remain
firm in the quest.

27.  That State is knowable only by actual experience of the Truth of the Real Self. It is indicated
(in the sacred lore) only by negations.  'Not so, not so'.  It is not described by speech nor thought
of by the mind.  Even The Primal Guru - Dakshinamurti - taught It only by Silence.

28.  Since that State is changeless, wordless and calm, beyond the states of waking and the rest,
it is called the Fourth State.  Such is the teaching of the Mandukya Upanishad.

29.  For every creature there are three states, waking, dream and deep sleep; and sustaining these
three states there is another sleep, the sleep of ignorance.

30. The whole of this world is contained within this trinity of states.  The Reality of the Fourth State,
which is wordless, transcends these three states.

One day I told Bhagavan, 'My father has no bhakti.  He never went to temples or sacred places and rivers.
But my mother was a great devotee. My father used to get attacks of malaria fever frequently. In these
fevers my fathers used to tell me, 'Look here, there is Parameswara on the Bull and camphor is being
waved before him. Have darshan.'

Thereupon Bhagavan related the following story: 'In a certain kingdom the queen was always going to
the temples, bhajan parties and uttering the name of God.   The king never took part in all this.  The queen
was greatly concerned over this indifference of the king and prayed to God to convert the King to her ways.

'One day when she returned late after visiting the temples and taking part in bhajans, and entered the
bedroom, the King was sleeping on cot, but the room was resounding with the name of God, Ram Nam.
Carefully observing where from the sound of the name of God came, she discovered it came from her
husband's heart.  Thereupon, she at once sent for the minister and told him that the gods had granted
her prayer that the King should have bhakti.

They came to the Matam in Siva's Tirumaraikkadu
And had their arrival announced to the godly child;
Then they came to his divine presence and adored him.
He was happy to receive them and inquired of them
If they were free from trouble; then they said:
"You are the avatar, come to redeem the world!
Can trouble beset them that think on your feet twain"

The servitor ruled by the Lord sweetly sojourned
With the godly child there; devotion welled up
In him more and more; he hailed the feet
Of the Lord of Vaaimoor and decked Him
In loving devotion with verse-garlands; then
With the Muni of Gnosis he returned to Tirumaraikkadu
And adored the feet of the Pure and purifying One.

நீடுந் திருவாய் மூரடைந்து

The Lord that gained the garlands of Tamizh, vanished;
Then they reached glorious Tiruvaaimoor
And circumambulated the temple; the two great servitors
Of the Lord who wears the crescent,
Adored and hailed and hymned the Lord;
Their love for Him soared more and more, and they
Willingly sojourned in that town together.

Straight before the lord of Tiruppukali dight

And adored Him; he pointed to Tirunavukkarasu,
Who too beheld Him and hailed Him with the hymn
Which opened thus: "Pata atiyar".

He grieved sore that He took him there making it

"Maybe it is fair that You concealed Yourself from me
That caused the doors to ope, not comprehending
Your sacred intent; but yonder is he who is
Flourishing poised in the prowess of servitor-ship
And who hymned the doors into shutting; Oh Lord!
Wherefore do you hide?" Thus sand he.

Thus illumined, he sang: "He said : "Come'
And went away: what may this be?"
He rose up resolved thus: "If this be the grace

The woodland of the Vedas and proceeded swift;
The Lord of all genesis led him in the very form
In which He manifested before him.

Verily the Ruby of ever-abiding opulent Maraikkadu.
While thus he slept a conscious slumber, the Lord
Who shares Uma in His frame, blazing with the beauty
Of the Holy Ash on His frame, appeared
Before Him and bade him thus: "We will be
At Vaimoor; follow Us there!"

Arunachala Siva.

Thoughts are product of sin.  Here, the sin means ego, which is the first principle, that divides
man and godhead. This thought can be good or bad.  Bad thoughts, we all agree create bad actions.
Even these bad actions are called bad according to circumstances.  A soldier can kill any number of
soldiers of enemy camp, and get appreciation.  But if he kills a civilian on the road, he is punished.
A king can marry any number of girls and bring them to his harem.  A citizen cannot marry
many girls.  So all good thoughts also produce evil.  Take atom bomb.  It came out of a detailed
experiment in science, whose basic laws of relativity and thermo-dyanamics are quite good for peaceful purposes.  But the same principles created an atom bomb and killed lakhs of people.

Now to bad thoughts, bad thoughts apparently produce bad actions which are sin.  But there
could be some bad thoughts [very rare indeed], which can produce good results.  Like the rishi who
decided to bluff to the hunter who had come chasing a deer, saying that there was no
deer on that side.  The deer was saved.  All said, it is a lie.

That is why, Bhagavan Ramana said:  Summa Iru, Be Still,
Be thoughtless.  But it is quite difficult for most of us.

Arunachala Siva.

It is striking too how the simplest of questions are often the most difficult to answer.  What is the wisest
way to greet such apparently widespread indifference to things that really matter? How best may love
be sustained in the face of hostility and hatred forgiven while maintaining utter integrity regarding
condemnation of violence and the absolute requirement to stand fast in the face of oppression?

The answers are challenging in the extreme and do little to console us.  Often it is suffering alone that
will open our eyes to the deepest issues of life and death -- while sometimes only absolute outrage at the
atrocities we witness around us by way of the veritable bombardment of information from the mass media
that invades our lives, will pierce the sense of apathy and open our hearts to God's mercy.

Ever wary of attachment to extreme opinions, we can at least always begin by taking a firm stand  on the
most noble of ideals.  In such a restive and rapidly shifting ear as our own, is it not the bounden duty
of all of us who share these concerns somehow to find time in our busy lives to wrest out the space and
opportunity to pay tribute to the highest good of which we can conceive - God, Reality or Truth --
no matter how we may term it?

Verse  36:

O Abhirami!  Your lotus like twin feet are there.  These can rule over me with grace.  Your grace emanating
from the corner of your eyes, shall save me from the god of death.  If I take trouble to pray to You,
there are lots and lots of benefits.  If I do not pray to You, it is only my fault and not yours.  O My Mother
of broad face,  the One who is on the left side of Siva who took the bow and arrow to vanquish the Tripura!

Arunachala Siva.

One day at 4 a.m. Bhagavan woke me up to go to Pandavatheertham to swim and disport ourselves
there. Hearing this a Dikshitar who was sleeping nearby began scratching the floor.  Bhagavan asked him
to see if it was a spindle.  Thereupon the Dikshitar explained Bhagavan was referring to the dream which
he had just then.  It seems he was then dreaming that he was in his own village.  That Avani Avitttam
(month and star when the sacred thread ceremony performed) was approaching and that to spin yarn
for making sacred threads, he was searching for his spindle.  The previous day I told Bhagavan, 'Jnanis
know the past, present and future.'   Bhagavan  replied, 'That is a very small matter.  They know what occurs
in the waking, the dream and other worlds.   But all the worlds are only as real as this world.  God has
given all Knowledge to men, withholding from them the only Knowledge of the future, even of the next

One day one Bhakta told another, 'If you have Bhagavan's darshan often, he will make you a mendicant.'
The latter, who was a great Bhakta and who knew everything, pretended to be frightened and came to
Bhagavan and complained, 'It seems, if I came to you frequently, you will make me a pauper.  I am getting
a salary of Rs 1000 per month. What is to become of my wife and children if I lose this appointment?'
Bhagavan replied,  'Those who come to me will get each of their wishes fulfilled.'
